Several media outlets have tabbed Paige the nation s best point guard. PAIGE PRESEASON ACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR u Marcus Paige was named the Preseason ACC Player of the Year in late October by media voters at ACC Operation Basketball, the conference s annual preseason media day. Paige also grabbed the most votes on the preseason All-ACC team. u Joining Paige on the preseason All-ACC squad were Montrezl Harrell (Louisville), Jahlil Okafor (Duke), Malcolm Brogdon (Virginia) and Jerian Grant (Notre Dame). u Paige, Harrell and Okafor all also first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press, with Paige being the leading vote-getter on that team as well. PAIGE ON COUSY WATCH LIST u Marcus Paige, one of five finalists for the 2014 Bob Cousy Award, is on the watch list for the award once again this season. u Paige is among 36 players on the watch list for the 2015 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer Bob Cousy and presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizes the top point guard in the nation. u The watch list will be narrowed down to a final 20 in early February, then a final five by early March. A selection committee appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the candidates in contention for the nation s top collegiate poincludes members of the media, head coaches, media relations contacts and Hall of Famers. u is the only school in the nation with three Cousy Award winners in Raymond Felton (2005), Ty Lawson (2009) and Kendall Marshall (2012). u Previous winners of the Cousy Award include Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph s), Felton, Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A&M), DJ Augustin (Texas), Lawson, Greivis Vasquez (Maryland), Kemba Walker (Connecticut), Marshall, Trey Burke (Michigan) and last year s winner Shabazz Napier (Connecticut). NATION S BEST BACKCOURT? u CBSSports.com named s backcourt the best in the nation in the preseason (based on expected production this season from both starters and reserves). u CBS s Matt Norlander wrote of top UNC guards Marcus Paige, Nate Britt, Joel Berry II and Justin Jackson: Paige is a savant at the point, carrying on a legacy of super-talented and heady floor generals. He s a different breed from some of the muscular bulldogs in the past decade to wear UNC blue, but Paige s angular approach is unlike any current 1 in the game. Britt is a 5-foot-11 defensive pest. Justin Jackson, who cracked our top-100-players list, could become a star by February.... And Joel Berry is a Mc- Donald s All-American point guard who gets to backup Paige. The drop-off won t be significant. In terms of talent, minutes, points, assists and steals, I ve got to have the Heels at the top. Paige might win Player of the Year, after all. (Oct. 31) MORE PRAISE FOR PAIGE FROM CBS & ESPN u CBSSports.com rated Marcus Paige as the nation s third-best player and top guard in a ranking of the top 100 players published in the preseason. u Writes CBS s Sam Vecenie: Paige developed into the best offensive guard in the NCAA last season with his 6 ability to not only consistently get into the middle of the lane, but also with his further-developed outside jumper. He ll be the engine that makes UNC s high-powered offense go. (Oct. 30) u Later in the preseason, ESPN ranked Paige the nation s second-best player behind Wisconsin forward Frank Kaminsky. TOUGH BREAK FOR LUKE DAVIS u UNC doctors diagnosed senior guard Luke Davis with a stress fracture in his right foot on Oct. 24. Davis had surgery the following week. Doctors expect Davis to miss two to three months of action. TAR HEELS BLAST BELMONT ABBEY IN FINAL TUNE-UP u The outcome was never in doubt as sixthranked North cruised past Belmont Abbey, , in its final exhibition of the preseason on Nov. 7 in Chapel Hill. u Kennedy Meeks, Isaiah Hicks and freshman Justin Jackson combined for 44 points on shooting. u played unselfishly, handing out 29 assists (including 6 from J.P. Tokoto) on 48 field goals. HEELS EASE PAST FAYETTEVILLE STATE IN EXHIBITION OPENER u Freshman Justin Jackson led five double-figure scorers as North cruised past Fayetteville State, , in an exhibition contest at the Smith Center on Oct. 24. The Tar Heels jumped out to a 22-5 lead in the first 8:34 of the game, then shot 61.5 percent from the floor after halftime to lead by as many as 53 and put the game away. u Jackson started and finished with 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including 3 of 4 three-pointers. u Jackson s rookie classmates also played well, as Theo Pinson (15 points, eight rebounds, 6 of 9 shooting) and Joel Berry II (12 points, four assists and four steals despite 3 of 10 shooting) also had solid exhibition debuts. u Brice Johnson shot 2 for 6 but had 13 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. J.P. Tokoto had six points, seven rebounds and eight assists with just one turnover. u Sophomore Isaiah Hicks looked comfortable coming off the bench and playing in the post after a freshman season on the wing, providing energy as well as his 13 points (on 6 of 6 shooting) with five rebounds and three steals in 14 minutes. COLEMAN & SEYMORE ADDED TO ROSTER u The Tar Heels added two walk-on members to the Tar Heel roster in senior Sasha Seymore and junior Justin Coleman just prior to season. u Seymore is attending UNC on a Morehead-Cain Scholarship, the most prestigious academic grant awarded at. 7 he led the JV team in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore. He is the UNC senior class president. u Coleman is a Raleigh native who played at Broughton High School and played the last two years as a guard on the JV team under coaches Hubert Davis and C.B.
