Mohegan Sun has been the home of the tournament since its beginnings in The event is traditionally one of the best attended women s basketball championship tournaments in Division I; last season, The American s tournament ranked second with 5,713 fans in attendance per session. TOP DOGS UConn is both the regular season champion and No. 1 tournament seed for the sixth straight year. Furthermore, the Huskies have captured all six American Athletic Conference tournament titles, boasting a 15-0 record. The Huskies closed out another 16-0 regular season conference slate by the skin of their teeth on Monday after trailing USF at halftime. The Bulls forced UConn into 15 turnovers, but the visiting Huskies held the hosts scoreless for the final six minutes to seal the win. MAKING THEIR MARK Beyond UConn, the remaining top-four seeds have all achieved milestones heading into the championship. No. 2 UCF, No. 3 Cincinnati and No. 4 Houston all earned their highest seeds as members of The American. The Knights are in the midst of their best season as a Division I program with 24 wins and sit squarely in the picture for an NCAA at-large bid. Cincinnati has achieved its first 20-win season since 2003 and the most league wins since The Bearcats are riding a four-game win streak into the Championship. DEJA VU Three of Friday s four first-round contests will be immediate rematches of Monday s final regular season contests. ECU vs. SMU, Tulsa vs. Wichita State and Temple vs. Memphis will all occur for the second time in five days. In those Monday games, ECU, Wichita State and Temple were all victorious. F Cincinnati Thomas averaged a double-double in Cincinnati s final week of the season as the Bearcats secured their highest league win total as a member of The American. In the Bearcats win over USF, she scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and followed two days later with an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double at Tulane on Monday. Against the Green Wave, Thomas added three assists, two steals and two blocks. For the week, the sophomore averaged 15.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.5 steals and 2.0 assists per outing as Cincinnati earned the No. 3 seed for the conference championship. FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Marissa Mackins Fr. G Temple Mackins was all over the floor for Temple in the Owls 2-1 week, averaging 19.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She set a pair of career-highs, first scoring 19 points on 6-of-14 from the field against Tulsa on Feb. 27. Mackins then upped that total to 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting with five 3-pointers in the Owls win over Memphis on March 4. Those outings bookended a 15-point, 7-assist, 4-rebound outing against Wichita State on March 2. The Owls clinched the No. 6 seed for the conference championship with back-to-back wins to close the regular season. HONOR ROLL Kay Kay Wright Jr. G UCF Averaged 18.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals for UCF in a 2-0 week that saw the Knights wrap up the No. 2 seed for the conference championship; scored 21 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line against Houston in the regular-season finale Angel Rizor Jr. F Cincinnati Put forth a 15-point, 8-rebound, four-assist outing in the Bearcats regular season finale win at Tulane; ended the week averaging 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals as Cincinnati went 2-0 Lashonda Monk So. In order to be named a candidate, a senior must be in excellent academic standing while also volunteering time with causes and in the community. Three American players, UConn s Stefanie Dolson (2014), Breanna Stewart (2016) and Gabby Williams (2018), are previous Senior CLASS Award winners. 15 ON THE DIGITAL NETWORK The American Digital Network (ADN) will produce 15 live women s basketball contests during the 2019 conference schedule, featuring 11 of the league s teams. All games will be available on Facebook on the conference s live event page, The American Digital Network Plus (facebook. com/americandigitalnetworkplus). Lincoln Rose and Angela Beck will return for their second season as the on-air talent. BEST OF THE BEST UConn claimed its fifth-straight American Athletic Conference title in 2018, culminating another unbeaten conference season. The Huskies earned the top overall seed for the 2018 NCAA Championship and advanced to their 11thconsecutive Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Notre Dame in the semifinal. As a member of the American Athletic Conference, UConn is 26-3 in the NCAA Tournament. POSTSEASON POWER Since The American s inaugural season in , all 12 women s basketball program have made at least one postseason appearance. The conference has earned 12 bids to the NCAA Championship and compiled a 39-9 record in the tournament, with five-time conference champion UConn claiming three national titles. All-time, American programs sport a record in the NCAA Championship. LEAPS AND BOUNDS In , UCF and Houston both posted their best seasons since joining The American prior to the season. The Knights posted 22 wins, the most for the program since becoming Division I, and achieved their highest seed yet in the American Championship at No. 3. Houston reached 20 wins and earned a postseason bid for the first time since ALL EYES ON US The 2018 American Athletic Conference Championship featured three of the seven-highest ranked conference tournament games this year, more than any other top Division I conference: Game Viewers UConn vs. USF 354,000 Cincinnati vs. UConn 342,000 Tulane vs. UConn 259,000 Furthermore, the American Women s Basketball Championship drew the second-highest average number of attendees per session (5,713) in Division I, as well as the second-highest attendance for the championship game (7,501) in NEW DIGS Houston will open its new home, the Fertitta Center, for the season. The $60 million project will host its first women s basketball game on the national stage, when the Cougars host Texas A&M on Dec. 6. Cincinnati s $87 million renovations to Fifth Third Arena will be completed in time for the season, featuring 542 new club seats, 16 luxury suites and state-ofthe-art technology. INTERNATIONAL STAGE USF s Kitija Laksa, along with former UConn standouts Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Kia Nurse, suited up for their home countries in the 2018 FIBA Women s World Cup in September. Stewart and Tuck made the American roster, with Nurse competing for Canada and Laksa for Latvia. WELCOME TO THE AMERICAN The American Athletic Conference welcomes new Cincinnati head coach Michelle Clark-Heard for the season. Clark-Heard returns to Cincinnati, where she previously served as an assistant from Most recently, Clark- Heard was the head coach at Western Kentucky, where she amassed a record in six seasons and reached postseason play every season. Head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson reached 300 career wins on Jan. 19 in UCF s victory over SMU. Lashonda Monk sits in the top five nationally in steals, sitting fourth in total steals (114) and fifth in steals per game (4.07). Friday will mark the third consecutive year the Pirates have met SMU in the conference championship. The Pirates are 3-4 all-time in The American Championship. ECU s win over Wichita State on Jan. 9 marked the first career victory for acting head coach Nicole Mealing. USF is the only team in American Athletic Conference history to lead UConn at halftime, now having done it twice. The Bulls led the Huskies at half on Monday. Head coach Jose Fernandez collected his 350th career win with USF s victory over Wichita State on Feb. 23. Enna Pehadzic posted the conference single-game high so far this season with 35 points against ECU on Feb. 20. The Bulls are a top 10 team nationally in rebounding, ranking sixth with 1, 309 total rebounds and in rebounding margin (+10.1). Tulane is a top-10 team nationally in 3-point field goal percentage defense, ranking eight at 26.4 percent. The Green Wave are the third-most successful program in The American Championship, owning a 4-4 all-time record behind only UConn and USF. With 15 victories, the Green Wave has surpassed its win total from last season. Lisa Stockton earned her 500th career win at the helm of the Green Wave in Dec. 4 s victory over Nicholls. Alicia Froling is SMU s all-time leader in both rebounds (1,062) and blocks (188). She s the only Mustang in program history with 1,000 points and 1,000 boards. SMU and ECU will meet in the conference tournament for the third straight year. SMU is the youngest roster by age in Division I with an average age of The Mustangs seven freshmen marks the third-most on a roster nationally. Tulsa is seeking a first round tournament win for the fourth consecutive season. The Golden Hurricane are 3-4 all-time in the conference championship. Crystal Polk sits in the top 10 in the conference in both scoring and rebounding, as she s 10th in scoring (13.2 PPG) and seventh in rebound (7.4 RPG). Head coach Matilda Mossman is Tulsa s all-time winningest women s basketball coach with 103 victories and earned her 100th career win on Jan. 9 against Memphis. Freshman Jamirah Shutes is The American s highest-scoring freshman and sits seventh overall amongst all players, averaging 13.8 points per game. The Tigers are seeking their second win in The American Championship and their first since Memphis received a career-high 17 points with five 3-pointers from Jada Stinson in Monday s outing against Temple. Alana Davis is one of just 20 playersin Tigers program history to tabulate at least 10 career double-doubles. Mia Davis sits behind only Napheesa Collier in The American in both scoring (19.0 PPG) and rebounding (9.3 RPG). Temple is coming off a season-best shooting performance, connecting on 53.2 percent from the field on Monday against Memphis. The Owls have either earned a first round bye or advanced to the quarterfinals in all five American Athletic Conference championships so far. Temple is the No. 6 seed after closing conference play 7-4, following an 0-5 start. Wichita State is seeking its first American Athletic Conference Championship win in program history on Friday. Wichita State features the fifthyoungest roster in Division I. Three of the Shockers top five scorers are true freshmen (Bremaud, Jaida Hampton, Seraphine Bastin). The Shockers played a program-record 18 home games this season, going 10-8 in those contests.
