The Crimson wrapped up the month of December with a 2-3 record after falling to Minnesota on Saturday. The five-game stretch included a close loss at Kentucky and wins over A-10 foe Fordham and Patriot League power Boston University. Harvard returns four of its top five scorers, including reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Bryce Aiken. Despite missing the last three games with a knee injury, Aiken leads the team with 17.6 points per game while classmate Seth Towns follows with a 12.4 scoring average. Towns is coming off his third consecutive double-digit outing after tallying 10 points at Minnesota. The sophomore also leads the Crimson with 5.3 boards per game. Vermont shot 57.7% (30- for-52) from the floor and set a new season high in field goal percentage and field goals made. UVM also extended its home winning streak to 16 games with the victory. Anthony Lamb notched his sixth 20-point outing of the season with a game-high 20 points on 7-of- 13 shooting. The sophomore drained three attempts from downtown and gathered six rebounds. 4 MORE NEWS AND NOTES UVM & HARVARD VS. COMMON OPPONENTS The Catamounts and Crimson have played a pair of common opponents which both games resulting in tough losses for each squad. CALENDAR YEAR OPENERS Since the turn of the century, Vermont is 14-4 in the first game of the new year. UVM is 4-2 under head coach John Becker during the stretch. I hope our fans understand how good of a basketball team Vermont is... I m not sure they do. BILAS TOP 68 TEAMS ESPN analyst Jay Bilas ranked his top 68 teams in college basketball on Dec. 5 and the Cats slipped in at No. 68. VERMONT S ROAD TRIP PERHAPS DIVISION I S FINEST Before the contest with the Spiders, the Richmond Times-Dispatch took a look at Vermont s non-conference schedule and called it what may be the finest DI outfit outside prime time: Vermont, the America East king that s playing 12 of its 15 nonconference games away from home. SUCCESS MAKES IT HARD FOR VERMONT, YALE TO FILL SCHED- ULES - NYC BUCKETS After UVM s win at Yale, NYCBuckets.com said Vermont and Yale have had the same problem the last couple of seasons. They have become too successful to fill a non-conference schedule without a whole lot of work. GIANT KILLER: TEAMS THAT COULD CAUSE TROBLE IN MARCH ESPN Insider John Gasaway listed the Catamounts as an underrated team primed to upset opponents seeded at least five lines higher in the NCAA tournament in his latest edition of Giant Killers. FINDING VALUE IN UK LOSS MidMajorMadness.com profiled Vermont s close loss at Kentucky and stated the common fan should now know what this program is and what it is capable of. They should know these Catamounts, especially Trae Bell-Haynes, the guard with amazing finishing abilities whom Becker called special at the dais tonight. MID-MAJOR MADNESS WEEKEND WRAPUP In MidMajorMadness.com s weekend wrap-up, the site said the following about the Cats at Kentucky: Vermont confirmed what every America East team feared that the Catamounts are really, really good, and not just for a mid-major. Vermont played only six guys 10-or-more minutes and they all contributed in a major way. On top of that, the team showed poise down the stretch, coming back and almost beating one of the best teams in the nation on the road. CALIPARI S QUOTE ABOUT UVM After his Kentucky Wildcats were almost the victim of an upset, head coach John Calipari complimented UVM on its efforts: You cannot play Popcorn State and learn anything. You ve got to play good teams. I didn t realize how good (Vermont) was until I watched the tape. Then I was like, who scheduled this game? This is ridiculous. They just do an unbelievable job. If you watch them, they create good shots for each other each time down, they are either shooting layups or 3s, Calipari continued during his post-game news conference. Defensively, they fight like crazy, they are a terrific rebounding team. MID-MAJOR MADNESS PRESEASON POWER RANKINGS Before the weekend, MidMajorMadness.com completed its preseason mid-major power rankings for the season. Vermont was ranked No. 4 behind No. 3 Rhode Island, No. 2 Gonzaga, and No. 1 Saint Mary s. BILAS PRESEASON PICKS ESPN s Jay Bilas gave his preseason college basketball predictions for the upcoming season last Thursday. Bilas mentioned the Catamounts as a valued mid-major selection along with Harvard, Bucknell, Yale, Oakland, Middle Tennessee State, Charleston, and Florida Gulf Coast. Bilas also listed his top vastly underrated players as two UVM players made the list. Trae Bell-Haynes landed in the fifth spot list while teammate Anthony Lamb followed in sixth place. LOU HENSON AWARD WATCH LIST CollegeInsider.com named Trae Bell- Haynes and Anthony Lamb to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List last Wednesday. The award honors the top Division I Mid-Major Player of the Year. PAYEN HEADED TO SPAIN Former UVM forward and America East Sixth Man of the Year, Darren Payen 17, has signed with Spain s Baloncesto Benidorm. Last season, Payen was the second Catamount to receive the Sixth Man of the Year Award behind teammate Cam Ward in He was a key reserve for UVM by dropping 8.3 points and grabbing 2.7 boards per game against conference foes. Payen was the fourth-best shot blocker in the league with 17 swats. The 6-8 big man sank 76.7% (56-of-73) of his attempts from the floor and charted five double-figure games against America East teams. BLEACHER REPORT NCAA TOURNAMENT PROJECTIONS Bleacher Report filled out a projected bracket for the 2018 NCAA Tournament on Tuesday. Vermont was selected as a No. 12 seed and matched up against No. 5 seed Baylor in the Midwest Region. From the complete 68-team predictions, the Catamounts cracked the top-50 among BR s team rankings. The Catamounts return four starters and most of their key reserves from a 29-win team that went undefeated in league play last season and was within striking distance of Purdue until the closing minutes of their first-round NCAA Tournament game last March. ESPN S 351 D1 RANKINGS ESPN s John Gasaway ranked all 351 Division I college programs and put the Catamounts at No. 74, based on his %RPM rating - percentage of possession-minutes that a roster returns from last season. ROTHSTEIN S 10 COLLEGE COACHES ON THE RISE CBS Sports and FanRag Sports writer Jon Rothstein named 10 Division I men s college basketball coaches on the rise heading into the season. John Becker was one of the 10 coaches to make the list. Rothstein said about Becker: Becker has quietly led the Catamounts to an average of 23.2 victories during his time in Burlington. 6

Lawrence North Kpedi joins Ernie Duncan, Everett Duncan, and Josh Speidel as fellow Catamounts from the Hoosier State. As a senior, the 6-9 big man averaged a double-double, and earned Second Team IndyStar Super Team honors. He also led Lawrence North to the sectional championship game. He was selected to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) All-State Supreme 15 Team and was invited to the North/South Indiana All-Star Classic. His father Andy was a center for the Illinois Fighting Illini from Illinois made the tournament during the season and Andy was named team MVP as year later as a senior SKYLER NASH Guard Chicago, Ill. Gould Academy Nash, the No. 2 rated player out of the state of Maine, attended high school at Riverside Brookfield in Brookfield, Illinois before continuing his career at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine. At Riverside Brookfield, he collected First Team All- Conference honors as a senior. While at Gould, Nash was named to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AA Third Team after averaging 20 points, seven rebounds, and four assists last year. His grandfather Charles Holton played for the Harlem Globetrotters from and rumored to be the oldest living Globetrotter. BAILEY PATELLA Forward Lenox, Mass. Vermont Academy Patella, a two-time NEPSAC All-League selection, comes to Burlington from Vermont Academy. Patella helped the Wildcats to a NEPSAC Championship during his junior season and a preseason No. 1 ranking as the country s top prep team heading into his senior campaign. Before Vermont Academy, Patella was a 1,000-point scorer at Lenox High School before transferring prior to the start of the season. STEF SMITH Guard Ajax, Ontario Bill Crothers Secondary Smith hails from the same high school, Bill Crothers Secondary, as reigning America East Player of the Year Trae Bell-Haynes. Smith is the all-time leading scorer at Bill Crothers and was voted Athlete of the Year as a junior and senior. As a senior, he was named team captain and earned First Team All-Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association honors. In the classroom, Smith was valedictorian of his graduating class. Last summer, he competed for Team Canada in the FIBA U17 World Championships. He was one of 10 Canadian players invited to Mexico to take part in the NBA s Americas Team Camp last summer.
