6 Season Outlook In just one season at the helm of the Eastern Michigan University women s basketball team, head coach AnnMarie Gilbert proved well suited to continue the tradition of success that has been established in Ypsilanti. Gilbert directed the Eagles to a overall record and an 11-5 Mid-American Conference mark. For the team s efforts, Eastern claimed a share of the West Division title, its third division title in the past five seasons. It was a great year, the kids really achieved what we set out to do, said Gilbert. The bar was set high even before we got here, so winning was the only option. We challenged the kids to be MAC West Champions and they really took that to heart. Repeating last year s success will be a challenging endeavor for Gilbert and her staff, as the Eagles return just one starter to the lineup in Six letterwinners return to the equation for EMU, while 10 newcomers will don the Green and White jersey for the first time. Last year s team was one that had one returning starter and not much playing experience and this year we have just one starter returning, the second year head coach mentioned. We are trying to approach the season in a similar way, as I feel like we have more talent on this team than last. We have a great nucleus of guards and I really like our chances with them. Consistency in the post will be our biggest area of uncertainty. We have a lot of young players, so how steady they can become will be the key Even with all the changes the goals remain the same: win the Mid- American Conference and advance to the NCAA Tournament. EAGLE VETERANS With the departure of a trio of seniors including second team All- MAC selection Colleen Russell the mantle of veteran leadership falls in part on senior forward Amber Land and sophomore guard Cassie Schrock. Land returns for her fifth season in Ypsilanti having provided significant contribution both on and off the floor in A starter in 11 games last year, the Kulm N.D. native posted career highs in every statistical category. Not only will she be relied upon on the court, but she will provide much needed leadership as the only student-athlete to have more than three years experience at EMU. It didn t always show through her statistics, but Amber has a big role with this team, Gilbert said. We are looking for her to be more consistent, as last year she showed her potential with a six-game stretch in the non-conference schedule when she averaged more than eight points and six rebounds per game. We need her to be able to do that on a night in, night out basis. She went to the Pete Newell Post Camp this summer which is something that very few juniors do. Amber saw what Colleen Russell did in just one year, so she is very focused heading into the season. Schrock had a solid first season wearing the Green and White jersey, ranking among the league s top freshmen and nearly garnering All-Freshman accolades. The Wadsworth, Ohio native averaged 6.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game and ranked 13th in the MAC in steals. Schrock scored in double figures six times last season, pouring in a career-best 20 points in the MAC West Division clincher versus Central Michigan, March 5, Cassie had the potential to be All-MAC or even the Freshman of the Year last year, mentioned Gilbert. She was a little tentative early on and wasn t as aggressive as she could have 6 Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert been. She is very cerebral and well respected by not only her peers but other coaches throughout the league. She is really going to be a catalyst in our success this year, she is going to be a leader for the team. Cassie got a lot of quality experience last season as a freshman, and she has played against a large percentage of the players in the league while growing up. So, we are really going to count on her for her leadership and her productivity. The other senior on the roster is forward Shana McKinney, who saw limited playing time in recording just 95 total minutes of playing time. Shana is very strong and a kid who is very physical and aggressive, Gilbert spoke of the Detroit, Mich. product. Sometime she struggles with her own aggressiveness and emotions. Shana has really made the most progress of anyone returning this year. She is a kid that came in a little out of shape, but she right now is on the verge of surpassing all of her summer conditioning goals. Our staff has really seen her grown both academically and athletically and a lot of our success will be based on her. Junior Mary Lawson returns to the team after playing in just three games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Mary is a kid that started to get the big picture last year just before she got injured so that was definitely disappointing, said Gilbert. She can shoot the basketball as well as anyone, so we are hoping she is confident enough to pull the trigger. Junior guard Carla Warren is the team s second-longest tenured player, however she has been unable to crack the lineup, appearing in just nine games in her career. Carla is a basketball player that has struggled with structure, added Gilbert. We are really looking hard to see how she has matured and how we can create open-court opportunities for her. Carla knows how to play and slash to the basket, but she is just a person who hasn t put all the pieces together yet for what she can do inside the structure of a Division I basketball team. Another bright spot in the EMU lineup is sophomore forward Tara Johnson. Appearing in 20 games in , Johnson averaged a rebound per game, while making 7-of-17 shots from the field. Tara has a better attitude and approach to the game heading into the season, said Gilbert. It isn t enough just to be able to jump and grab a few rebounds but it takes a complete game. Her ball handling and shooting have improved and I think her teammates are more confident in her. She will have a real chance to try for a starting position in the post. EAGLE NEWCOMERS Gilbert and company welcome 10 newcomers from both high school and junior college ranks. We really needed the length and shooting ability of Amanda Tretheway and Kayla Vantil from Foothill Community College, mentioned Gilbert. They come from a successful program and are not going to be surprised by our training. We hope they can come in and hit the ground running, as they came from a program that has a very similar style to ours. In high school, Amanda and Kayla averaged nearly a double-double and then in college they were productive members of a very successful team. Also from the junior college circuit is junior guard LaDwan Jones, who should added depth to an already solid front court. At Schoolcraft College, Jones helped the Ocelots post back-toback conference titles. Sophomores Sydney Huntley-Rogers and De Ja Wills did not set foot on the court last

7 Season Outlook season, but the tandem was around the squad learning not only the Eagles playbook but gaining valuable leadership experience. Sitting out last year was a blessing in disguise for Sydney, told Gilbert. She needed that year to mature as a person, a student and as an athlete so it has really benefited her. She is on the right track in each of those areas and now she is becoming a leader. In high school she was a scoring point guard, now trying to find the right shot selection and figuring out how to make her teammates better are the issues she is facing. In the long run I think she will Senior Amber Land become one of the MAC s top guards. De Ja is another one who was a prolific scorer in high school, Gilbert added. She does a lot of things well, including running the floor, moving without the basketball, and taking the ball to the basket. Both De Ja and Sydney can flat out shoot the three, so if we needed to interchange them we could do that as well. Gilbert and her staff focused on size and strength in this year s recruiting class. The freshmen five includes Tymeshe Gibson, Tavelyn James, Paige Redditt, Brittany Simmons and walk-on Kimberly Davis. All should make a dramatic impact for years to come. Tymeshe has really made some strides since coming in July, Gilbert said of her freshman forward. She has improved her conditioning and focus and is someone who is extremely strong. We will certainly need her, not only for this season, but future years as well. Tymeshe is a going to be a banger for us, she is left handed which can make her very difficult to guard. James was a prolific scorer in at Mumford High School in Detroit, ranking second in the state in scoring as a senior. Tavelyn has amazing speed and quickness and will definitely challenge Sydney (Huntly-Rogers) for that starting point guard spot, Gilbert stated. She is a tremendous student in the classroom and then led her high school s conference in scoring. Tavelyn will not only put the ball in the basket but she makes the people around her better. Our kids love to play with her in practice as she is so dynamic both offensively and defensively. Redditt rewrote the record book at Belton High School, holding the school s marks for scoring and blocks. Paige is an amazing rebounder that has the chance to step right into the starting lineup at the four spot, Gilbert went on to say. She is a young lady that can score from the free throw line but also rebound relentlessly. An extremely hard worker, Paige is set up for success just by the way she is built. She learns plays quickly and really embraces the philosophy of our program. An all-around athlete, Simmons should make immediate contributions on the court in Brittany is a three or four position player, that can play both the guard and the forward spot, explained Gilbert. She has a chance to be a starter and vie for quality minutes at critical points. Brittany is a very skilled player that can shoot the ball, put it on the floor and rebound. A walk-on from Evanston Township High School in Evantson, Ill. Davis will help provide depth in a youthful group of post players. Kimberly is an extremely hard-working individual, with her only drawback being that she is an undersized post player, mentioned Gilbert. She is someone who can score and will work extremely hard to learn the system and bring good things to it. THE SCHEDULE The Eastern Michigan University women s basketball schedule is highlighted by a home matchup with national power Notre Dame, Dec. 2. A game that is certain to draw a large crowd. The meeting will mark the first time the Irish and Eagles have played since the campaign. We are excited about this year s schedule, said Gilbert. It is a great opportunity to compete against teams from the Horizon, Missouri Valley, Atlantic-10, and Big East Conferences. We believe this year s schedule gives us the chance to test ourselves early and often. By playing a high level of competition it will prepare us in our quest for another MAC Championship. For the first time since the season, the Eagles will open the schedule on the road, traveling to the University of North Dakota, Nov. 14. The game marks the return of senior forward Amber Land to her home state, and the first time the team will play a game in the Sioux State. The Eagles then travel to NCAA Tournament qualifier Cleveland State University, Nov. 18, before returning home for a pair of contests versus Madonna University, Nov. 22, and Siena College, Nov. 24. After that Eastern Michigan will spend the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov , in Cancun, Mexico for the Caribbean Challenge. At the tournament, the Green and White are scheduled to play James Madison University and Texas Christian University. Coach Gilbert s crew will then get to enjoy some time at home, as the Eagles play four of the next five contests inside the confines of the Convocation Center. Big East Conference power Notre Dame invades Ypsilanti, Dec. 2, marking the first time a Big East school has played in the Convo since the building opened during the campaign. ND is 2-0 all-time versus EMU, with the Fighting Irish last posting a decision at venerable Bowen Field House, Nov. 20, A trip to Normal, Ill., Dec. 6, for a meeting with Illinois State University follows before a trio of home contests, versus Chicago State University, Dec. 10, the University of Detroit Mercy, Dec. 20, and Weber State University, Dec. 29. Eastern closes out the non-conference portion of the slate at the University of Dayton, Jan. 4. EMU opens Mid-American Conference play Jan. 7 at Ball State University before returning home to battle in-state rival Central Michigan University, Jan. 10, in a doubleheader with the men s squad. Eastern Michigan wraps up the regular season with a road game March 7 at Central Michigan before entering the 2009 Kraft/MAC Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, March Sophomore Cassie Schrock 7
