Baylor West Virginia BU WVU Baylor used a run over the final nine minutes of the game to defeat West Virginia, 80-70, in a Big 12 Championship quarterfinal round game at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Fifth-seeded West Virginia, playing without All-Big 12 guard Juwan Staten for a fourth consecutive game and senior guard Gary Browne for a third straight game, was also minus its top inside player, Devin Williams for the remaining 2:02 of the contest when he drew his fifth personal foul. Williams had scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds at the time of his disqualification. West Virginia (23-9) used the 3-ball to stick close to the fourthseeded Bears, going 6-of-11 from behind the arc in the first half to trail by only two at the break. In the prior two meetings against Baylor, West Virginia was behind by 16 points at halftime in Morgantown and by 14 at halftime in Waco. The game remained close until 3:57 to go when West Virginia, trailing by one at 67-66, made two critical live-ball turnovers that resulted in Baylor baskets. The first came at midcourt when Taurean Prince picked off a Daxter Miles Jr. pass that resulted in a Rico Gathers dunk. Then the next time down the floor, the Mountaineers turned the ball over again when Kenny Chery came up with the basketball and that led to a Lester Medford layup. In the snap of a finger, instead of a one-possession game it was now a five-point Baylor lead, which the Bears expanded over the final two minutes when Williams was no longer in the game and West Virginia was taking long 3s to try and get back in it. The Mountaineers last field goal came with 6:34 remaining on Elijah Macon s tip-in basket. Baylor (24-8) had a advantage in points in the paint and a 14-2 edge in fast break points, while West Virginia, after shooting right around 50 percent in the first half, finished the game hitting 45.3 percent of its field goal attempts. Baylor made 25 of its 49 field goal attempts for 51 percent and also had a big edge at the foul line, hitting 26 of 34 compared to just 13 of 18 for West Virginia. In Baylor s three double-digit victories over the Mountaineers this season, the Bears attempted 102 free throws, making 73, while West Virginia tried 55 and made 36. Prince (18), Royce O Neale (16) and Gathers (15) were Baylor s top scorers. Gathers also grabbed a team best nine rebounds. Besides Williams 18, Jaysean Paige scored a career-high of those coming from 3. Taurean Prince scored 20 points off the bench to lead 19th-ranked Baylor to a victory over 20th-ranked West Virginia at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. West Virginia (22-7, 10-6), already down starting point guard Juwan Staten, who was a pregame scratch because of knee and groin injuries, lost Gary Browne three minutes into the game with an ankle injury. Baylor forward Rico Gathers rolled Browne s ankle diving for a loose basketball and Browne spent the rest of the game on the bench with a big bag of ice on his ankle. Losing Gary was hard because you have to be able to make some adjustments during the course of the game and our freshmen were trying, said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. We had those freshmen in there and they haven t been in there with the ball. They ve had the comfort of having two seniors pretty much all of the time with them on the floor so that hurt us. The injuries to Staten and Browne meant West Virginia played the majority of the game with two freshmen in the backcourt Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. and both performed well under the circumstances. Carter made 7 of 13 from 3-point distance and finished with 25 points while Miles contributed 11. Those two made all eight 3s for the Mountaineers, which finished the game going 8-of-24 from behind the arc. Just as it did in Morgantown earlier in the month, Baylor jumped out to a big early lead and kept its margin in double digits throughout. Royce O Neale scored 18, Gathers contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds while Al Freeman added 10 points off the bench. Baylor (22-7, 10-6) shot 51.1 percent for the game, including 8-of-15 from 3, had five fewer turnovers than the Mountaineers (13 to 8) and was plus-21 in free throw attempts. West Virginia did out-rebound the Bears 40-31, and had 21 assists on its 25 made shots. The loss snaps West Virginia s three-game winning streak. An announced crowd of 9,385 watched the game. Jevon Carter s seven 3s marked the 15th time in school history a Mountaineer player made seven or more 3s in a game. Last FG - BU 2nd-00:27, WVU 2nd-01:23. Largest lead - BU by 26 2nd-04:22, WVU by 2 1st-19:45. Score tied - 1 time. Lead changed - 1 time. Rico Gathers scored 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to power 19th-ranked Baylor to victory over No. 15 West Virginia at the WVU Coliseum. The Bears (18-5, 6-4) jumped all over West Virginia, building a 10-point lead at the 16-minute mark and getting their margin to 20 before the third media timeout. West Virginia s offense didn t have an answer for Baylor s 2-3 zone defense and the Mountaineer defense couldn t handle Gathers in the paint or Royce O Neale and Taurean Prince on the wings. Both finished the game with 15 points, while guards Kenny Chery and Al Freeman added 11 each. It was a similar deal with Baylor, the Bears wings getting through West Virginia s press and finding wide-open shooters on the wings. Five of Baylor s six 3s came in the first half when the Bears built their big lead. In the second half, Baylor was content to spread the floor, run clock and drive to the basket where the Bears made several uncontested layups late in the shot clock. The press got bad when the game kind of got away from us, said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. We turned them over 19 times and that s a team that has a lot of skilled guys with the ball. The problem is we turned it over 16 times and 11 by our bigs. Meanwhile, West Virginia again struggled to make shots from everywhere on the floor, going 6 of 23 from 3 and also missing 11 of its 18 layup attempts. Overall, West Virginia shot 36.4 percent while also missing 10 of its 25 free throw attempts. Devin Williams led the Mountaineers with 20 points and 15 rebounds while Jevon Carter contributed 13 points and Daxter Miles Jr. finished with 10. All 13 of Carter s points came in the first half while nine of Miles 10 points came in the second half. Baylor shot 54.9 percent for the game, matched West Virginia s 11 steals, and finished with an eight-rebound edge on the glass. Fifty-five percent shooting to 36 percent shooting and you don t really rebound it and you turn it over equal to what they turn it over then you re not going to win, said Huggins. If we have two turnovers and we outrebound them by eight we ve got a chance. Baylor has won all three trips to the Coliseum since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12. The last two have been double-digit victories for the Bears.
