Both teams enter the contest with a 2-1 record in the OVC and sit tied for third in the conference race. The game will serve as the Panthers homecoming contest and athletic hall of fame game. Eastern Illinois enters the game on a two game losing skid following a home loss to Eastern Kentucky on Oct. 3 and last weekend s loss at Penn State. The Panthers were limited to only three points against the Nittany Lions during the 52-3 set back in Happy Valley. EIU has not lost a homecoming game since 1999, that loss was to Tennessee Tech. Tennessee Tech enters the weekend with two straight OVC wins as they knocked off Austin Peay on Oct. 3 before winning on the road at UT Martin over the weekend. In their two OVC wins TTU has won by eight points or less on both occasions. Their one OVC loss this year was a 17-7 loss at Eastern Kentucky. THE SERIES This will be the 16th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech with the Panthers holding an 11-4 all-time series lead. EIU has won four straight in the series and 11- of-13 since joining the Ohio Valley Conference. One of the two losses was to Tennessee Tech in 1999 during the Panthers homecoming contest, the last EIU loss during homecoming. 3 October 17, 2009 Eastern Illinois vs. Tennessee Tech Page 3 COOK NAMED TOP SPECIALIST Eastern Illinois punter Kevin Cook was named the Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week following his efforts at Penn State. The junior averaged 48.2 yards per punt on six attempts with a long punt of 58 yards and another punt pinned inside the 20. For the season Cook is averaging 43.4 yards per punt which leads the OVC and would rank 10th in the FCS if he had enough attempts to qualify for the national standings. Cook has had four punts of more than 50 yards with another four pinned inside the 20. Two years ago Cook was an honorable mention All-American as he broke Jeff Gossett s season punting record with an average of 44.6 yards per punt. ROMO TO GET RETIRED As part of Saturday s contest Eastern Illinois will officially retire the No. 17 previously worn by quarterback Tony Romo. Romo will become the first Eastern Illinois player to have his number retired and only the fifth former EIU athlete to be honored in that manner. Romo was the Panthers starting quarterback from leading the team to three straight FCS playoff berths while winning three straight OVC Player of the Year Awards. In 2002 he was named the Walter Payton Award winner ending his career the OVC career leader in touchdown passes with 85. Romo joins former baseball star Marty Pattin, basketball star Kevin Duckworth, women s basketball star Nancy Kassebaum and men s soccer player Erik Proffitt as players formerly recognized. PANTHERS PLAY TO BIG CROWD Eastern Illinois played not only to a national audience on ESPN Classic on Saturday at Penn State but the Panthers also played in front of the biggest crowd to ever watch an Eastern Illinois game. The Beaver Stadium crowd was announced at 104,488 which easily surpassed the previous high of 60,131 that watched in 2008 when the Panthers played at Memorial Stadium in Illinois. The crowd of 100,000-plus was also the largest crowd ever to see an OVC team play passing the mark of 85,754 when Tennessee Tech played at Auburn in TALE OF THE TAPE Points Per Game Average Points Allowed First Downs Rushing Yards Per Game Rushing Touchdowns Passing Yards Per Game Passing Touchdowns Average Yards Per Game Interceptions Thrown Fumbles - Lost Turnovers Gained Punting Average Field Goals (ATT/MADE)...7-for for-5 3rd Down Conversions (49%) (40%) 4th Down Conversions Sacks (Yards)...14 (92)... 6 (42) Penalties (Yards)...33 (305) (310) Time of Possession (Game)...30: :54 Statistical Leaders RUSHING YARDS EASTERN ILLINOIS TENNESSEE TECH Mon Williams Chevon Walker Dontey Gay Tremaine Hudson PANTHERS DRAW A BIG CROWD AT HOME While the crowd that Eastern Illinois drew in its last home game against Eastern Kentucky paled in comparison to what the Panthers played in front of at Penn State, the crowd was still noteworthy. During the Panthers game on Oct. 3 against the Colonels, EIU drew a crowd of 11,271 which ranked as the 9th largest crowd ever to witness a game at O Brien Field. It marked only the 10th time that a crowd of 11,000 or more had attended a game and the third time that has happened since the Panthers joined the OVC. The previous crowd of 11,000-plus was Oct. 27, 2001 when EIU quarterbacked by Tony Romo won a shoot out with Tennessee State, HALFWAY TO A 1,000 Running back Mon Williams seemed to get slightly back on track on Saturday at Penn State as he finished the day with 64 yards on 14 carries for a 4.6 yards per carry average. That effort pushed Williams over the 500 yard mark for the season giving him 505 yards in six games. Williams is looking to give the Panthers a running back over a 1,000 yards for the sixth straight season and become the 10th running back to accomplish that feat. Williams is averaging 84.2 yards per game which ranks 34th in the country and 3rd in the OVC. This season he has had two games with more than 100-yards rushing. Millard has not allowed a sack for 32 straight games playing right guard the last two seasons and center the first six games this year. That streak dates back to Nov. 4, 2006 when Millard allowed a sack to Tennessee State. PANTHER INJURY REPORT Eastern Illinois lost the services of sophomore linebacker Cory Leman on Saturday after he suffered an MCL injury to his knee which will keep him out of the line-up for 4-to-6 weeks. Leman was the Panthers leading tackler with 55 stops which ranked 44th in the nation. Junior Nate Galan will be a game time decision after getting banged up in the game at Penn State. The Panthers should have redshirt freshman tight end Keagan Robinson available to play after he missed the last four weeks with a hamstring injury. NO TACKLES FOR LOSS Eastern Illinois was held without a tackle for loss on Saturday at Penn State marking the first time in more than 22 years that had happened. The last time EIU was held without a tackle for loss was on Sept. 5, 1987 during a 24-3 loss at San Jose State. On the season Eastern Illinois is averaging 6.33 tackles for loss per game which ranks 51st overall and 6th in the OVC. signor sends two more out Though he was limited to only two chances to kick off at Penn State, senior Austin Signor made the most of both chances as he sailed both kicks into the end zone. Signor continues to lead the FCS ranks with 14 kicks for touchback this season. The only other kicker in double digits this year is Ryan Griffith with ten kicks for touchback. Signor is also handling the field goal duties this season and ranks first in the OVC in field goals converting 7-of-10 this year. reeder sees time Bodie Reeder was able to see some time on the field at Penn State completing 2-of- 4 passes for 10 yards. Those completions move his career total up to 350 which places him four shy of tying Roger Haberer for 8th place on the career list. HOLDING THEM UNDER 100 Eastern Illinois was able to hold a running back to less than 100 yards in a game for the sixth straight game this season as Penn State s top rusher Evan Royster finished with 94 yards against the Panthers. Dating back to last season EIU had not allowed a 100 yard rusher in seven straight games. On the season EIU ranks 45th against the run allowing only yards per contest. another turnover gained Eastern Illinois added to its season turnover mark on Saturday with Nick Nasti getting an interception for the defense. The Panthers now have 13 turnovers gained this season with interceptions in five straight games and at least one turnover gained in all six contests. Dating back to last year EIU now has a streak of ten straight games with at least one turnover gained. whittaker becoming target For the second straight week freshman Kenny Whittaker has become the Panthers favorite target at wide receiver making five catches in each of the last two games. For the season Whittaker has hauled in 18 passes for a team-high 199 yards. He is averaging 11.1 yards per catch with two touchdowns on the year. first down catches When Eastern Illinois hits one of its receivers this season more often that not it has resulted in a first down. Entering the game with Tennessee Tech this weekend seven of the Panthers top eight receivers are averaging more than 10 yards per reception. Chavar Watkins and Lorence Ricks have been the two deep threats with both averaging over 20 yards per catch. The Panthers leading receiver in terms of number of catches, Jimmy Potempa, is the lone receiver in the top eight under ten yards per reception at only 6.4. haynes on the break-up Junior Rashad Haynes added another pass break-up to his career stats on Saturday giving him 20 pass break-ups for his career and a team-high six on the season. Haynes is among a group of players who are tied for 50th in the nation in pass break-ups this season while he ranks third in the OVC behind T.J. Heath of JSU and Jeremy Caldwell of EKU.
