ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY October 16, Playing its first game as a ranked opponent at the NCAA Division I level, Eastern Illinois held off a fierce challenge from Indiana State that gave the 20th ranked Panthers a victory. The win snapped a 14-game win streak in the series by the Sycamores as Dave Strauch hit three field goals including one with 8:08 left in the fourth quarter to seal the win. PANTHER LOSING STREAK REACHES EIGHT Eastern Illinois had its current losing streak reach eight games on Saturday with a 35-7 loss at Eastern Kentucky. It marked the fourth straight loss in the series with the Colonels and set the Panthers off to an 0-6 start on the season. EIU is one of five teams that are currently 0-6 to start the year. EIU joins Valparaiso, North Carolina A&T, Savannah State and Mississippi Valley State on that list. Dating back to last season, EIU is currently third on the active list behind Valparaiso at 15 straight losses and North Carolina A&T at nine straight losses. The Panthers are looking to end that streak sometime in the coming weeks as they play at Tennessee Tech on Saturday night before hosting Murray State and Austin Peay in back-to-back weeks.

3 October 16, 2010 Eastern Illinois at Tennessee Tech Page 3 EIU QUICK HITTERS TALE OF THE TAPE Eastern Illinois last started a season with an 0-6 record in The Panthers finished that season 1-10, losing 10 straight. Nick Nasti finished last Saturday s game at Eastern Kentucky with six tackles. It marked the first time this season that the senior linebacker had not reached double figure tackles. He now ranks 5th in the nation with tackles per game. Senior Rashad Haynes is slowly closing in on a spot in the Eastern Illinois career top ten for solo tackles. Haynes enters the weekend with 133 career solo tackles. He needs 23 more this season to catch Donald Thomas for 10th place on the career chart. Cameron Berra knocked home an extra point on Saturday at EKU increasing the freshman kickers season scoring total to 15 points. Berra leads the Panthers in scoring with Von Wise and Jimmy Potempa tied for second with 12 points each. Berra is looking to become the third straight kicker to lead EIU in scoring. Eastern Illinois was held to just 29 total yards rushing on Saturday at EKU. It marked the fourth time this season that EIU had been held under 100 yards rushing as a team. The 29 rushing yards is the lowest output for an EIU offense since Oct. 9, 2004 when the Panthers were held to 25 yards rushing by Eastern Kentucky during a 49-6 loss. While Eastern Illinois has been hurting itself with turnovers this season, the one area EIU has been improving in has been penalty yards per game. The Panthers currently rank 8th in the nation in the fewest penalty yards per game with only 34.5 yards per game flagged against them. The Panthers offense has only scored 67 total points so far this season. EIU had similar offensive struggles in 2003 as the team opened their first six games scoring only 65 points during a 1-5 start. The one win was a 27-0 victory over Division II California (Pa.). EIU would break out in game seven winning three of its next four games scoring 27, 29 and 34 in those victories. Lorence Ricks hauled in his first touchdown pass of the season on Saturday at EKU. Ricks last score was a rushing touchdown in last year s playoff game at Southern Illinois. Ricks also had four kick returns for 113 yards at EKU as he ranks 30th in the nation in kick return average at Points Per Game Average Points Allowed First Downs Rushing Yards Per Game Rushing Touchdowns Passing Yards Per Game Passing Touchdowns Average Yards Per Game Interceptions Thrown Fumbles - Lost Turnovers Gained Punting Average Field Goals (ATT/MADE)...4-of of-5 3rd Down Conversions... 18/75 (24%)...29/72 (40%) 4th Down Conversions...3/11 (27%)...8/10 (80%) Sacks By (Yards)...6 (34)... 7 (37) Penalties (Yards)...29 (207) (232) Time of Possession (Game)...27: :58 Statistical Leaders RUSHING YARDS EASTERN ILLINOIS TENNESSEE TECH Jimmy Potempa Mon Williams...64 Dontey Gay Jocques Crawford PASSING YARDS EASTERN ILLINOIS TENNESSEE TECH Jimmy Garoppolo Brandon Large Tre Lamb Cass Barnes...17 RECEPTIONS EASTERN ILLINOIS TENNESSEE TECH Erik Lora...30 Kenny Whittaker...23 Jimmy Potempa...12 EASTERN ILLINOIS Nick Nasti...71 Cory Leman...46 Nick Martinez...42 Tim Benford...21 Henry Sailes...7 Zack Ziegler...6 TACKLES TENNESSEE TECH Marty Jones...45 Kelechi Ordu...41 Dustin Dillehay...23 INTERCEPTIONS EASTERN ILLINOIS TENNESSEE TECH Sean Campbell...2 Nick Martinez...1 Marty Jones...2 Dustin Dillehay...1

It marked the second time this season that an EIU wide receiver has finished a game with more than 100-yards receiving. Erik Lora also posted a 102 yard effort this year at UT Martin. Lora currently ranks 23rd in the nation and second in the OVC with 6 receptions per game. Whittaker is 63rd nationally and fourth in the OVC at 4.6 catches per game. Kevin Cook had an off day by his standards as the senior punter averaged 44.8 yards per punt during four punts at EKU. Cook is averaging right at 45 yards per game and currently ranks second in the nation in punting average. He has been a special teams weapon for the Panthers with two punts over 70 yards including an 86-yard punt against Southeast Missouri which earned him National Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Transfer running back Jake Walker saw his first significant playing time of the season on Saturday at EKU as the sophomore had six carries for 18 yards against the Colonels. Walker who transferred from Toledo just prior to the start of the season has played almost entirely on special teams with six carries for two yards in the Panthers previous games. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Large came in for a couple of plays in the final series at EKU on Saturday night. Large has been impressive in his two stints as the back-up quarterback going 13-of-22 for 159 yards and one touchdown. He has one interception which occurred in the Jacksonville State game in the final seconds. As a starter Large had been 39-of-76 for 282 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Sophomore Artavious Dowdell had a solid week on the defensive line for the Panthers as he registered five tackles at Eastern Kentucky. Dowdell had 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, 1 forced fumble, one quarterback hurry and two fumble recoveries. Dowdell now leads the team with two sacks as he was named one of the FCS performers of the week at defensive line by College Football Performance Awards. Speaking of defensive line play senior Spyros Bazigos added two more tackles for loss to his season total at EKU finishing with five total tackles. Bazigos now has 8 tackles for loss on the season as he leads the OVC in tackles for loss per game at 1.33 and ranks 33rd nationally. While points off turnovers is usually a statistic reserved for basketball the Panthers have had their fair share of giving up points off turnovers this season. To date EIU has allowed opponents to score 72 points off of turnovers this season while the Panthers themselves have only been able to score 13 points off of turnovers they have created. Overall EIU ranks 41st with 11 turnovers gained however the Panthers rank second in turnovers lost this season with 21. Only Texas Southern with 23 committed turnovers has more this season.
