Jack Ashmore NOTES TO KNOW Eastern Illinois beat Miami (Ohio) on Saturday marking the sixth time the Panthers have beaten an FBS school. The last win over an FBS team was in 2013, a win over San Diego State. Five of the six wins have come against current Mid-American Conference members. Mitch Kimble was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Week. He is the first EIU player to win the OVC Offensive Player award since Shepard Little on Oct. 26, 2014 following an EIU win over Tennessee State. Mitch Kimble hit Devin Church with 56 seconds remaining to give EIU the win over Miami. Kimble led two scoring drives for the Panthers in the final 7:53 of the game. The final drive began for EIU with 2:35 left on the clock. Nick Horne had a second quarter interception giving Eastern Illinois its first turnover gained this season. Last season EIU was third in the nation in turnovers gained with 31 and seventh in the country in interceptions with 19. This will mark the 15th time that Eastern Illinois and Illinois State have played the Mid- America Classic with at least one of the teams ranked. Illinois State is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation while EIU is one of the first teams also receiving votes in both polls. Eastern Illinois and Illinois State have had three games decided by overtime including last year s ISU victory at O Brien Field in Charleston. Last season Eastern Illinois made its 16th FCS playoff appearance. That total ranks sixth all-time for FCS playoff appearance. EIU has made ten playoff appearances since THE SERIES This will be the 105th playing of the Mid-America Classic with Illinois State holding a all-time series lead after snapping the home school s winning streak in the series last season. ISU won at O Brien Field, 34-31, in overtime last season for the first win by a road team since EIU won in Normal in The rivalry is the 14th oldest in the FCS and the oldest FCS rivalry in the state of Illinois. The two schools began playing for a traveling trophy at the 100th meeting in 2012, that game was won by Eastern Illinois. EIU is now 6-33 all-time against FBS schools with five of those wins coming against current members of the Mid-American Conference. EIU s last win against an FBS school was the 2013 season opener, a win at San Diego State. EIU s win was the seventh FCS win over an FBS school this season. Mitch Kimble did a little bit of everything for Eastern Illinois during the Panthers win at Miami. Kimble was 19-of-32 passing for 150 yards. Seventy of those yards came on the last two scoring drives in the fourth quarter. Kimble added 49 yards on the ground and caught one pass for 23 yards. He ranks 22nd in the NCAA in passing yards (236.5 per game) and 19th in total offense (269.5 per game). Eastern Illinois ability to convert on 3rd down was key in the Panthers win at Miami. EIU finished the game 9-of-15 on third down conversions including going 4-of-4 on third down during their first scoring drive of the game. EIU currently ranks seventh in the FCS in 3rd down conversion at 51.7 percent, that percentage leads the OVC. Pono Choy had a big day defensively for the Panthers as the senior finished with 15 tackles in the win over Miami. Choy became the first Panther since Seth McDonald to record 15 or more tackles in a game. McDonald did it twice last season with 17 tackles against Western Illinois and Jacksonville State. Choy ranks 32nd in the FCS and second in the OVC following two games this season. He has 21 tackles. With Saturday s win at Miami, Eastern Illinois has now won five of its last six road games with the lone loss coming at Northern Iowa in last year s FCS playoffs. The Panthers were 4-0 on the road in the Ohio Valley Conference last season and have now opened the 2016 with a road win at FBS member Miami. Senior Jarvis Williams came up big for the Panthers during the final series of the win at Miami. Williams picked up a sack on the second to last play of the game and then on what ended up being the final play of the contest, the senior chased Miami s quarterback out of the pocket and made a tackle in play. Time expired before the RedHawks could run another play. Williams finished with nine tackles in the game. Nick Horne had the Panthers first turnover gained this year with his interception in the second quarter. Horne returned the pick 17 yards with the turnover eventually leading to EIU s first points of the game. Horne finished the game with seven tackles including two tackles for loss. He currently ranks 46th in the nation in tackles for loss with three. Teammate Josh Price is also tied for 46th nationally in tackles for loss. Eastern Illinois offense once again distributed the ball to multiple receivers during the Panthers win at Miami. Nine different players caught at least one pass in the win with Paul Gossage the top target with five receptions. In the opener against Western Illinois, EIU had 12 different players catch at least one pass. The Panthers currently have ten players with at least two catches this season. Korliss Marshall and Gossage are the team leaders with six catches each. Tight end Addison Bounds caught his first touchdown pass of the season to get Eastern Illinois on the board in the second quarter at Miami. Bounds led the Panthers in touchdown receptions last season with four. He has three catches for 37 yards this season. All five of EIU s touchdown receptions this season have been hauled in by different players. Devin Church and Dennis Turner joined Bounds with TD catches at Miami. Korliss Marshall and Ben Odugbesan had touchdown grabs in the opener against Western Illinois. Marshall s touchdown reception covered 79 yards.

EIU is 4-20 in the previous games but came close to upsetting ISU last season falling to the fifth ranked Redbirds in overtime. EIU s last win over a top five opponent was Nov. 7, 1992 when EIU beat No. 1 ranked Northern Iowa, Eastern Illinois kickoff return defense ranks fifth in the NCAA after the opening two weeks of the season and most of that is by design. Nick Bruno averaged 37.8 yards per kickoff in the opener with Western Illinois hitting all four kicks high and short to eliminate big returns. At Miami Bruno averaged 55 yards per kickoff with all four kicks bouncing on the ground to once again eliminate big returns. EIU is allowing just 10.5 yards per return this season. Punter Cody Edwards has been efficient for the Panthers this season as he pinned all three punts on Saturday at Miami inside the 20-yard line. Edwards had a long punt of 56 yards which helped EIU flip the field. The junior is averaging 41.1 yards per punt this season which ranks 30th in the nation and third in the OVC. Nick Bruno was successful on all three extra point attempts at Miami. The junior kicker ranks sixth on the EIU career extra points made list with 81. For his career Bruno is 81-of-83 on extra point attempts. He has made 31 straight PAT s dating back to last season. His last miss was at Austin Peay on Oct. 3. He needs five more made extra points to tie Steve Kuehn for fifth on the Panthers career list. Bruno is 24-of-33 on career field goal attempts. Eastern Illinois passed for 174 yards in the win Saturday at Miami. EIU currently leads the Ohio Valley Conference in passing yards averaging 270 per game. In the season opener Mitch Kimble passed for 323 yards becoming only the third EIU quarterback in school history to pass for 300 or more yards in their first career start. Mike Simpson (321 yards, 1996 at Western Michigan) and Sean Payton (325 yards, 1984 vs. Grand Valley State) were the other two. OVC Predicted Order Of Finish 1. Mitchell began returning kicks midway through the 2015 season and averages 23.3 yards per return including one touchdown. This season Mitchell moved from wide receiver to safety. Freshman Darshon McCullough became the third different EIU running back to carry the football this season on Saturday at Miami. McCullough responded with a 23-yard burst on his first carry that put the Panthers inside the red zone. Senior Devin Church currently leads the EIU rushing attack with 80 yards this season. Quarterback Mitch Kimble is second with 66 yards and Korliss Marshall has 64 yards. EIU s defense currently has six players with double figure tackles following two games of the season. Pono Choy is the team leader following his 15 tackle effort at Miami. Last year s team leader in tackles Seth McDonald is second on the team with 17 tackles including 12 solo stops. Josh Price, Jarvis Williams and Nick Horne have all been credited with 13 tackles this year. Bradley Dewberry, who ranked second on the team in tackles last year, is currently sixth on the team with 12 tackles. Two recent Eastern Illinois football alumni had good opening weekend s in the National Football League. Former Walter Payton Award winner Jimmy Garoppolo was solid in his first NFL start leading the New England Patriots to a win at Arizona. Garoppolo was 24-of-33 for 264 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill made his NFL debut with the Philadelphia Eagles making a big fourth down tackle in their win over the Cleveland Browns.

Dameron led the Panthers to the FCS playoffs in 2015 as EIU was ranked 23rd in the final FCS Coaches poll. Dameron was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech prior to taking the EIU head job and has more than 15 years of experience as a defensive coordinator with more than 30 years of experience as a college coach. Dameron served as the EIU defensive coordinator in 2000 helping the program rebound from a 2-10 season in 1999 to an 8-4 record and FCS playoff appearance in Dameron played football at Arkansas appearing in four bowl games between He is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas. Complete Coach Kim Dameron bio available on page 6 of EIU game notes... ILLINOIS STATE HEAD COACH BROCK SPACK Brock Spack is in his eighth year as head coach at Illinois State coaching the Redbirds. Spack is a former assistant coach at Eastern Illinois where he worked under former head coach Bob Spoo. Spack is 4-3 in previous meetings against EIU and has a overall record. He was an All-Big Ten linebacker for the Boilermakers in the early 1980 s before embarking on a coaching career that has included stops at Eastern Illinois, Wyoming and Purdue. SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE Illinois State is off to a 2-0 start to the season following a win over Big Ten member Northwestern on Saturday. The Redbirds have done it on defense allowing just ten points per game with Alejandr Rivera, Dalton Keene and Adam Conley the top three tacklers. George Moreira has settled in as the top running back with 149 yards and two touchdowns this season. Jake Kolbe is the starter at quarterback having thrown for 453 yards this season. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY September 17, Eric Arnold hit Ralph Stewart for an 11- yard touchdown with five seconds remaining in the game as EIU rallied to beat Liberty, John Sengstok brought the Panthers back within striking distance with an 18-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Arnold then engineered an 80-yard drive in the final two minutes capped with the touchdown pass to Stewart. EIU WELCOMES NEW COACHES Eastern Illinois added six new coaches to its staff with Mike Simmonds and DeMarcus Covington part of the coaching staff in the spring. Four new coaches were added late in the summer with Keith Scott, Greg Peterson, Tyler Stevens and Greg Carroll. Simmonds will coach the offensive line and was a member of the staff at North Texas last season. Covington will serve as the co-defensive coordinator and coach the defensive line. He worked at UT Martin last season. Peterson will coach the wide receivers and worked most recently as the offensive coordinator at Tulsa. 6 September 17, 2016 Eastern Illinois at Illinois State Page 6 #EIUBleedBlue THE COACH DAMERON FILE EDUCATION University of Arkansas...Bachelor's, 1983 KIM DAMERON (Arkansas, 1983) -- 3rd Season Kim Dameron was hired as the 24th head coach in program history and the fifth in the NCAA Division I era in January of Dameron returned the Panthers to the FCS playoffs in 2015 as EIU won seven of their last eight regular season games to finish with a 7-4 regular season record. EIU lost in the opening round of the FCS playoffs at Northern Iowa. The Panthers were ranked No. 23 in the final FCS Coaches poll after making their 16th all-time FCS playoff appearance. During the season Dameron s team produced six All- OVC players including co-defensive Player of the Year Dino Fanti. Dameron would have his first player from Eastern Illinois drafted in May of 2016 when linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill became a sixth round selection of the New England Patriots. In his first season Dameron coached the Panthers to a 5-7 record including 5-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Panthers were in the championship race until the final weeks of the season. Dameron s first career victory came on Sept. 20 against Austin Peay as the Panthers won In the game EIU tied a school record for rushing yards with 413. The team featured three All-American selections including first team offensive lineman Collin Seibert and freshman All-American kicker Nick Bruno. Dameron s squad had five first team All-OVC selections and five second team All-OVC honorees. The team was among the best on both sides of the ball in the OVC ranking second in total offense (11th nationally) and third in total defense. The Bulldogs finished ranked 69th in the nation in total defense under Dameron s direction after being ranked 120th the previous season. Dameron s defense was the fourth most-improved squad in the FBS last season. An experienced defensive coach with more than 15 years as a defensive coordinator Dameron will take over an Eastern Illinois program that advanced to the FCS playoff quarterfinals last season. It will be Dameron s second stint in Charleston as he previously worked as the defensive coordinator at EIU in 2000 as a member of head coach Bob Spoo s staff. During that 2000 season, Dameron helped transform the Panthers defense as they rebounded from a 2-10 season in 1999 to 8-4 and Ohio Valley Conference Champions in Dameron spent three seasons as the safeties coach at Ole Miss as the team appeared in two Cotton Bowls. Two of his players were selected in the NFL draft as his pass defense unit ranked 11th in the NCAA in pass efficiency defense and 15th in pass defense. Prior to his stint at Ole Miss, Dameron was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe as the program became bowl eligible at the FBS level for the first time in 2007 while also picking up a win over Alabama. The ULM defense led the Sun Belt Conference in fewest points allowed and ranking third nationally in turnovers gained. Dameron has previous stops as the defensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin and as the secondary coach at Cincinnati and UNLV. He spent the 1999 season as the secondary coach in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts. He has previous FCS coaching experience on the staffs of Murray State and Missouri State where he helped coach both teams to FCS playoff appearances. Dameron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Lou Holtz at Arkansas, his alma mater, after earning his degree. He was a four-year player for the Razorbacks from at wide receiver and defensive back. As a Razorback he participated in four bowl games including the 1979 Sugar Bowl. Dameron and his wife Debbie, have one daughter Krystle. Krystle and her husband Mike, gave birth to daughter Emma the day prior to Dameron coaching his first collegiate game as a head coach on August 28, 2014 at Minnesota.

OVC TELECONFERENCE: Each week during the football season all 9 head coaches in the Ohio Valley Conference will take part in a weekly teleconference on Tuesday mornings. Games will be broadcast by the Voice of the Panthers Mike Bradd with color commentary by Jack Ashmore. Games will be carried on Hit Mix 88.9 FM WEIU in the Charleston/Coles County Market. Network stations include WHOW 1520 AM (Clinton), WMKR 94.3 FM (Taylorville) and WSVZ 98.3 FM (Shelbyville / Effingham). Eastern Illinois will have all five of its 2016 home games and all four road Ohio Valley Conference games televised on the free streaming platform - In addition this year all five home games will be televised in the region on WEIU TV, Check you local cable listings for WEIU station channel on your provider. The Panthers road games at Miami of Ohio and Illinois State will also be available through broadcast avenues. The Miami game will be streamed on ESPN3. The Mid-America Classic against Illinois State will be televised on Comcast Sports Net Chicago.
