The Game Eastern Illinois will look to open the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2001 season as they travel to Southeast Missouri on Saturday evening. The game will serve as the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both schools. EIU was selected to finish third in the OVC preseason poll was SEMO was picked to finish last. EIU enters the game at 2-0 following a 31-0 victory over Indiana State on Saturday in Terre Haute. The Panther defense allowed just 24 yards rushing for the Sycamores as they ended the long standing Battle On The Border with ISU having won five straight in the series. SEMO enters the game at 1-1 after falling at FBS member Cincinnati, 70-3, on Saturday in the Queen City. The Redhawks had posted a nearly identical score in their opening week victory as they crushed NAIA member Quincy This will be the first FCS level contest this season for SEMO. THE SERIES This is the 17th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri with the Panthers holding a 12-4 all-time series lead. The first meeting between the two schools was back in 1956 with SEMO winning easily EIU has won 12 of 14 meetings since both schools moved to the Division I level. The Panthers have won four straight in the series, the last loss coming on October 4, 2003 in Cape Girardeau, a Redhawks victory. Spoo missed the 2006 season with a medical illness. His career record is at EIU including a mark in OVC action. This season EIU will play at Penn State matching two of the longest tenured head coaches head-to-head on Oct. 10. SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HEAD COACH tony SAMUEL Tony Samuel enters his fourth season as the head coach at Southeast Missouri. Samuel has posted a record in three plus seasons at SEMO including a 5-18 OVC mark. Samuel previously served as the head coach at New Mexico State compiling a mark at the school from A former player at Nebraska, Samuel earned his degree in 1981 and later returned to his alma mater coaching under Tom Osborne for 11 years. SCOUTING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI Southeast Missouri features a physical style of play of both sides of the football. The offense is led by running back Henry Harris with 129 yards in two games and three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Matt Scheible has won the starting quarterback job after starting two games last season. This year he is 26-of-45 for 345 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Junior linebacker Joshua Jackson is the team s top tackler with 16 stops so far this season. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY September 19, Eastern Illinois picked up its second win over an NCAA Division I FBS opponent as the Panthers handed Northern Illinois its 21st straight loss with a win over the Huskies. Chris Watson returned a fumble for a touchdown early in the second quarter while Anthony Buich tossed two second half touchdowns to finish 15-for-24 for 124 yards in the win. QUICKLY OUT OF THE GATE Eastern Illinois running back Mon Williams has quickly broken out of the gate in his first two games of the season. Williams cracked the 100 yard mark for the first time in his career on Saturday at Indiana State finishing with 113 yards. He was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for his effort which took place on just 15 carries (7.5 per carry) with two scores. On the season Williams now has 200 yards which ranks him 17th in the nation and second in the OVC entering this weeks game at Southeast Missouri. 3 September 19, 2009 Eastern Illinois at Southeast Missouri Page 3 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Eastern Illinois took home two of the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors following the Panthers win over Indiana State. Kicker Austin Signor was tabbed the OVC Specialist of the Week while Mon Williams was named the Newcomer of the Week. Signor was 1-of-2 on field goal attempts while averaging 68 yards on kick offs with three touchbacks. For the season he leads the NCAA with six kicks for touchback. Williams rushed for 113 yards and two scores in the win over the Sycamores as he moved into 17th place in the NCAA in rushing this season. OFF TO A 2-0 START Eastern Illinois opened the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2001 season. That year the Panthers won their opening three games before losing in game number four at San Diego State. EIU would go on to finish that season 9-2 including a 6-0 mark in the OVC. The Panthers also started at 2-0 in 2000 before falling in game number three at Toledo. Under head coach Bob Spoo the Panthers have started a season with two or more wins in six previous seasons making the FCS playoffs in five of those six years. a touchdown or less Eastern Illinois posted its first shutout against an opponent since Oct. 7, 2006 when the Panthers won 31-0 at Indiana State on Saturday. The last shutout was a 21-0 decision against Southeast Missouri in Charleston. In addition to posting a shutout, EIU limited its first two opponents to less than a touchdown each as the Panthers have vaulted to the No. 1 scoring defense in FCS at 3.0 points per game. The last time EIU held an opponent to 7 points or less during back-to-back games was in 1997 when they won 10-7 and 32-7 over Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri. The last time EIU held back-to-back opponents to 6 points or less was back in 1983 when the Panthers shutout Northern Iowa and Western Illinois on Oct. 15 and Oct. 22. TOP OVC PUNTERS FACE OFF Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri will each feature one of the nation s best punters when the teams meet on Saturday. EIU junior kicker Kevin Cook was an honorable mention All-American as a freshman when he ranked 4th in the nation in punting average. He was a second team All-OVC selection finishing behind Southeast Missouri punter Doug Spada. Over the past three seasons Spada has twice been named first team All-OVC and last season was a first team All-American by the AFCA. Entering the weekend Cook is averaging 41.8 yards per punt on five attempts which would rank 18th nationally if he had enough punt attempts. Spada is the national leader averaging 45.8 yards put punt on ten attempts. Catching their first passes of the season were last year s top receiver Charles Graves and transfer tight end Cody Bruns. Through two games this season three players have become favorite targets with Lorence Ricks, Chris Wright and Jimmy Potempa all tied for the team lead at five receptions each. All three have scored one touchdown with Ricks pulling down the longest reception at 27 yards this season. Eastern Illinois Players On All-OVC Preseason Team Offense Chaz Millard - Offensive Guard james has a pick six CJ James picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown in the opening quarter against Indiana State giving the Panthers their first defensive touchdown of the season. For James it was the second interception of his EIU career. The last player to score on an interception was Rashad Haynes who returned an interception for touchdown last season also against Indiana State. nationally ranked D Eastern Illinois brings one of the nation s top defensive units into Saturday s contest at Southeast Missouri. The Panthers rank first nationally in scoring defense and third nationally in total defense allowing just yards per game. EIU s rushing defense is fourth in the nation allowing just 22 yards per game on the ground. The Panthers allowed just 20 yards to Illinois State and 24 yards to Indiana State. Morehead State ypg OVC OPENERS Eastern Illinois will open the Ohio Valley Conference portion of its 2009 schedule this Saturday at Southeast Missouri. Eight the Panthers remaining nine games will be against OVC opponents with the lone exception an Oct. 10 trip to Penn State. EIU is 11-2 in its previous conference openers since joining the league in The Panthers are 5-1 in league openers on the road, the lone loss coming at Southeast Missouri in TH QUARTER MAN Sophomore running back Desmin Ward has become the Panthers fourth quarter man this season as he has helped EIU close out two games against Illinois State and Indiana State. On Saturday, Ward had 12 straight carries for 50 yards on the final drive to run out the clock against the Sycamores. For the season Ward has 71 yards on 19 carries with a 3.7 yards per carry average. Last season he rushed for 322 yards and a team high 11 touchdowns. EVERYONE GETTING A SACK Eastern Illinois has turned in two straight games with multiple sacks as the Panthers rank 11th in the nation in recording 3.5 sacks per game. Seven different players have recorded one sack each on the season with Cory Leman, Trevor Frericks and freshman Roosevelt Holliday adding their names to the season sacks race at Indiana State. EIU ranks 31st nationally in tackles for loss this season with Trevor Frericks the team leader at 2.5 TFL. MILLARD STREAK CONTINUES Senior center Chaz Millard continues his streak of consecutive games without allowing a sack as he played a good portion of the win over Indiana State. Millard has not allowed a sack for 28 straight games playing right guard the last two seasons and center the first two games this year. That streak dates back to Nov. 4, 2006 when Millard allowed a sack to Tennessee State. HENDERSON MOVES TO GUARD Redshirt sophomore Willie Henderson will start this week at right guard after splitting time with senior Chris Vaccaro in the win over Indiana State. Henderson played in three games last season as the starting center and ended the game against the Sycamores as the man in the middle. Vaccaro will see some time at the guard position and also serve as a back-up at center, if needed. NO SHOW-ME PLAYERS Eastern Illinois will play at Southeast Missouri without any players from the state of Missouri on the Panthers roster. This marks the first time since the 1990 season that EIU has not had at least one player from Missouri on its roster. The last three players from the Show Me State all earned All-Conference honors with Vincent Webb and Donald Thomas both winning OVC Player of the Year Awards with Jeff Sobol a second team All- OVC honoree. 200 yard day Eastern Illinois posted its second straight 200 yard rushing day to rank 12th nationally in rushing offense. It was the first time since Oct. 27 (TSU) and Nov. 10 (JSU), 2007 that EIU had posted back-toback 200 yard rushing games.

The last time EIU was held scoreless was Oct. 11, a 41-0 loss versus Eastern Kentucky. The Panthers also have a streak of 24 straight games in which they have scored a touchdown. EIU s longest streak of consecutive games without being shutout was 197 from which ranks fourth all-time among FCS schools. Player...New...Old Lorence Ricks Cory Leman Charles Graves Nick Martinez James Cooper Alain Marcelin panthers to play on ESPNU EIU will make its first ever football appearance on ESPNU this season when the Panthers host Tennessee State in the regular season finale. The game was moved to Thursday, Nov. 19 for television purposes and will be a 5 p.m. kick off. EIU currently has every home game televised in the Central Illinois region by WEIU TV. The last nationally televised contest was on CSTV during the 2007 season opener against Tennessee Tech. making the big ten rounds The Panthers will continue to make their trip around the Big Ten Conference this season as they play at Penn State on Oct. 10. After not playing a Big Ten school for more than 100 years of football, EIU will be facing a Big Ten opponent for the fourth straight year. That string will continue over the next two years with a trip to Iowa set for 2010 and Northwestern in WALTERS MAKES THE CUT The Panthers will have yet another face in the National Football League this season as 2008 graduate Pierre Walters was among those players named to the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2009 NFL season. Walters was a multiple time All-American at Eastern Illinois ending his career third in career tackles for loss at He joins current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as active players in the NFL while EIU also has several coaching alumni in the NFL ranks with head coach Sean Payton in New Orleans and head coach Brad Childress in Minnesota.

The video board also includes a new stateof-the-art sound system. The scoreboard system was purchased from Daktronics, Inc., and will provide a new dimension to the Panthers home game experience. The only catch is that Panther fans will now have to get accustomed to turning north instead of south were the previous scoreboards have stood for 40 years. o brien field turns 40 Eastern Illinois will play its 40th season of intercollegiate football at O Brien Field this season. The field was originally opened as Lincoln Field in 1970 with the Panthers losing the dedication game on Sept. 12 against Indiana State, The field complex was later renamed O Brien Field in honor of former football, track and cross country coach Maynard Pat O Brien. In the 40 years at O Brien, EIU has posted a record (68 percent) with seven undefeated seasons. MILLARD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Senior Chaz Millard has been named a preseason All- American by several publications after earning honorable mention All-American honors each of the past two seasons at right guard. During the spring due to injuries on the offensive line Millard moved over to the center position and played so well he won the starting job at that spot.
