This will mark the third time in four weeks that Eastern Illinois has played a nationally ranked opponent, two of them nationally ranked in the FCS while Penn State was ranked No. 14 in the FBS polls. Following the weekend, EIU found themselves in second place in the OVC standings as one of three teams who have suffered only one OVC loss this year. The game against JSU will count in the standings as either a win or a loss despite the Gamecocks not being eligible for the OVC regular-season title. The Panthers are coming off a win over Tennessee Tech that ended a two game slide. EIU has won in their last two visits to Paul Snow Stadium with each previous win helping the Panthers secure a post-season playoff berth. Jacksonville State comes into the game as one of the hottest teams in the FCS. After narrowly missing an upset of Florida State, JSU has reeled off four straight FCS wins with an average score of This will be homecoming for Jacksonville State as they have played five of their first six contests on the road. THE SERIES This will be the 7th meeting between Eastern Illinois and Jacksonville State. The series is currently tied 3-3 with the Gamecocks picking up a win in Charleston last season. In the first five meetings in the series the winner of the contest went on to either win the OVC regular-season title or earn an at-large NCAA FCS playoff berth. This season EIU is again in the hunt for the OVC regular-season title and playoff berth while JSU is playing for the chance to win an unofficial OVC title with two wins over OVC foes already in the bank. Spoo missed the 2006 season with a medical illness. His career record is at EIU including a mark in OVC action. Since taking over the program in 1987, Spoo has become one of the most respected Longest Tenured Division I Head Coaches (at same school) 1...Joe Paterno (Penn State)...since Bob Ford (Albany)...since Bobby Bowden (Florida State)...since Andy Talley (Villanova)...since Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech)...since Bob Spoo (Eastern Illinois)... since 1987 coaches in the game with numerous assistants moving on to succeed at all levels of the coaching business. He was the 1995 Football Gazette I-AA Coach of the Year and runnerup for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award in A 1960 graduate of Purdue University, Spoo has coached the Panthers to 8 NCAA FCS playoff berths and ten Top 25 national rankings. This season EIU will play at Penn State matching two of the longest tenured head coaches head-to-head on Oct. 10. jacksonville state HEAD COACH jack crowe Jack Crowe enters his tenth season coaching Jacksonville State having compiled a record in his time with the Gamecocks. Crowe took over the JSU program in 2000 when the team was a member of the Southland Conference. In 2003 they joined the OVC winning back-to-back league championships in 2003 and His career OVC record is in seven years. A 1970 graduate of UAB, Crowe also had head coaching stops at Livingston (now West Alabama) and Arkansas. His career record is SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE STATE The Gamecocks feature one of the most talented offensive players in recent Ohio Valley Conference history with senior quarterback Ryan Perrilloux. The second year transfer from LSU is one of 20-players on the mid-season Walter Payton Award Watch List. He currently leads the nation in passing efficiency at completing 71-of-116 passes for 1,284 yards. He has tossed 15 touchdowns compared to only one interception. Perrilloux is also dangerous on the ground ranking third on the team with 175 yards rushing. The defense which has allowed just 14 points to OVC opponents this year is led by Kevin Dix with five sacks and T.J. Heath with five interceptions. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY October 24, 1987 Eastern Illinois quarterback Eric Arnold hit tight end Mike Macek for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds remaining to lift Eastern Illinois to a 7-3 win over Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) in Springfield, Mo. Arnold was 19-of- 38 for 210 yards in the win. HIGH PROFILE QUARTERBACKS Eastern Illinois and Jacksonville State will both start former high school All-American quarterbacks under center on Saturday afternoon as Jake Christensen goes for the Panthers while Ryan Perrilloux will start for the Gamecocks. Both players started their careers at different FBS schools but both transferred into the Ohio Valley Conference with Christensen coming to EIU from Iowa in August and Perrilloux going to JSU from LSU prior to the 2008 season. This will be the second time that teams quarterbacked by Christensen and Perrilloux have faced off. Both players competed in the 2005 US Army All-American Bowl with the West team quarterbacked by Perrilloux winning over the East quarterbacked by Christensen, Also playing quarterback for the West were current New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and Jim Barnes (Arizona State). The other quarterbacks on the East squad included Greg Paulus, currently at Syracuse and Jonathan Crompton, currently at Tennessee. NATIONAL RADIO This week s contest will be featured as the FCS National Game of the Week and carried on WCKY AM 1530 based in Cincinnati. 3 October 24, 2009 Eastern Illinois at Jacksonville State Page 3 CJ JAMES GETS ANOTHER PICK Junior CJ James collected his third interception of the season on Saturday against Tennessee Tech extending his team lead. James was one of two Panthers to record an interception against TTU quarterback Lee Sweeney (Shelton Penrow had the other). James now has four career interceptions. He ranks 47th in the NCAA in interceptions this year and third in the OVC. Earlier this season James returned an interception for touchdown against Indiana State. HOLDING THE BALL Eastern Illinois held the ball for 43:10 on Saturday against Tennessee Tech as they were able to keep a banged up defense fresh on the sidelines. This season EIU is averaging 32:26 in time of possession which ranks first in the OVC and 16th nationally. To date this year, EIU has held the ball more than its opponents in five out of seven games. In those five games, the Panthers are 4-1, the lone loss coming at Penn State. The last time EIU held the ball for more than 40 minutes in a game was back on Sept. 19, 1998 when the Panthers controlled the ball for 40:10 of the game during a win over FBS member Northern Illinois. CREATING TURNOVERS The Panther defense forced five turnovers on Saturday against Tennessee Tech, a team that had only given up four turnovers in the first five games of the season. The Panthers had two interceptions against TTU quarterback Lee Sweeney while recovering three Golden Eagle fumbles. The Panthers now have 18 turnovers gained this season and are tied for the OVC lead with Jacksonville State. EIU has now gained at least one turnover in a game in 11 straight games dating back to last season. SIGNOR BIG SCORING WEAPON Senior kicker Austin Signor continues to be one of the Panthers top scoring weapons this season as he ranks first on the squad with 50 points. Signor has converted all 20 extra point attempts this season and is 10-of-16 on field goal attempts. With his three field goals made on Saturday he moved into a tie for 10th place on the EIU single season field goals made list. His average of 7.14 points per game is 33rd in the NCAA and second in the OVC behind Terrence Holt of Austin Peay. In terms of field goals made this season Signor leads the OVC while ranking 18th in the nation. On Saturday he knocked home two field goals of more than 40 yards giving him five field goals over that distance this season. Signor also serves as the Panthers kick off specialist with 17 of 38 kicks this season going for a touchback. Charles Graves was the top target with four receptions for 28 yards while Kenny Whittaker was second on the team with three catches for 45 yards. With those three catches Whittaker moved into a tie for the team lead with 21 catches with a team-high 244 yards. Also tied for the team lead is Michigan transfer Jimmy Potempa with 21 catches for 134 yards. On the season 12 different players have made at least three catches for the season with seven different players accounting for a touchdown reception. The Panthers are averaging 11.7 yards per reception and yards per game receiving. Eastern Illinois Players On All-OVC Preseason Team Offense Chaz Millard - Offensive Guard MILLARD STREAK CONTINUES Senior center Chaz Millard continues his streak of consecutive games without allowing a sack as he played against Tennessee Tech. Millard has not allowed a sack for 33 straight games playing right guard the last two seasons and center the first six games this year. That streak dates back to Nov. 4, 2006 when Millard allowed a sack to Tennessee State. stepping in on defense Eastern Illinois had four players step in to starting roles for the Panthers defense on Saturday against Tennessee Tech. Alain Marcelin earned his first start of the season and 8th of his career filling in for the injured Cory Leman at outside linebacker. Spyros Bazigos earned his second start at defensive tackle for Trevor Frericks with both players seeing time on the field. Colin Luczynski saw his second start of the season at defensive end startign for Nathan Galan. He made a start for Perry Burge earlier in the season at Indiana State. Bobson Mercier had his first of the season at rover playing in place of the injured Adrian Arrington. The only injured starter who will not be available at Jacksonville State is Leman who is out for 4-to-6 weeks with an MCL injury. BAKER MAKES A RECOVERY True freshman Adam Baker earned his first career playing time two weeks ago at Penn State moving into the starting long snapper role. Against Tennessee Tech on Saturday he made one his first big plays recovering a fumble on a punt. mon second in the ovc Junior running back Mon Williams moved up to second in the Ohio Valley Conference in rushing yards per game with an 81-yard effort against Tennessee Tech. Williams now has 586 on the season for an average of 83.7 yards per game. He ranks 29th nationally. The OVC leader in rushing is Ryan White of Austin Peay at The only Eastern Illinois running back to ever lead the OVC in rushing yards per game was J.R. Taylor in 2002 with a yards per game average. Taylor is also the only EIU player to ever lead the OVC in scoring as he was the conference s top man in 2001 and This year EIU has two players in the top five for league scoring this year. rushing defense Eastern Illinois held an opposing running back to less than 100 yards for the seventh straight game this season and eighth game overall dating back to last year. On the season EIU ranks 40th in rushing defense allowing just yards per game. In addition EIU has kept four teams to under a 100 total yards rushing picking up a win in each of those four contests. HAYNES CONTINUES TO COVER Rashad Haynes added two more pass defense break-ups to his season total on Saturday against Tennessee Tech as the Panthers recorded nine total break-ups in the game. Haynes now has eight pass break-ups this season and 22 for his career. The last time EIU was held scoreless was Oct. 11, a 41-0 loss versus Eastern Kentucky. The Panthers did have a streak of 26 straight games in which they have scored a touchdown snapped in the loss at Penn State. EIU s longest streak of consecutive games without being shutout was 197 from which ranks fourth all-time among FCS schools. Player...New...Old Lorence Ricks Cory Leman Charles Graves Nick Martinez James Cooper Alain Marcelin panthers to play on ESPNU EIU will make its first ever football appearance on ESPNU this season when the Panthers host Tennessee State in the regular season finale. The game was moved to Thursday, Nov. 19 for television purposes and will be a 5:30 p.m. kick off. EIU currently has every home game televised in the Central Illinois region by WEIU TV. The last nationally televised contest was on ESPN Classic on Oct. 10 this year at Penn State. making the big ten rounds The Panthers will continue to make their trip around the Big Ten Conference this season as they play at Penn State on Oct. 10. After not playing a Big Ten school for more than 100 years of football, EIU will be facing a Big Ten opponent for the fourth straight year. That string will continue over the next two years with a trip to Iowa set for 2010 and Northwestern in WALTERS MAKES THE CUT The Panthers will have yet another face in the National Football League this season as 2008 graduate Pierre Walters was among those players named to the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2009 NFL season. Walters was a multiple time All-American at Eastern Illinois ending his career third in career tackles for loss at He joins current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as active players in the NFL while EIU also has several coaching alumni in the NFL ranks with head coach Sean Payton in New Orleans and head coach Brad Childress in Minnesota.

The video board also includes a new stateof-the-art sound system. The scoreboard system was purchased from Daktronics, Inc., and will provide a new dimension to the Panthers home game experience. The only catch is that Panther fans will now have to get accustomed to turning north instead of south were the previous scoreboards have stood for 40 years. o brien field turns 40 Eastern Illinois will play its 40th season of intercollegiate football at O Brien Field this season. The field was originally opened as Lincoln Field in 1970 with the Panthers losing the dedication game on Sept. 12 against Indiana State, The field complex was later renamed O Brien Field in honor of former football, track and cross country coach Maynard Pat O Brien. In the 40 years at O Brien, EIU has posted a record (69 percent) with seven undefeated seasons. MILLARD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Senior Chaz Millard has been named a preseason All- American by several publications after earning honorable mention All-American honors each of the past two seasons at right guard. During the spring due to injuries on the offensive line Millard moved over to the center position and played so well he won the starting job at that spot. He enters the 2009 season with a streak of 26 games without allowing a sack. He graded out at 93 percent last season with 57 decleater blocks. FATHER/SON COMBO When Jake Christensen suits up at quarterback for Eastern Illinois he will join his father as one of two recent Panther father/ son combinations. Christensen s father Jeff played quarterback at EIU from and left as the school s career leading passer with 6,282 yards. He has since fallen to fourth but does still rank in many single season and career top ten lists at EIU. Last season linebacker Shannon Cobb was a member of the Panthers team after his father David was a defensive back on the 1978 EIU Division II National Championship team. LORA REPRESENTS TEAM USA Incoming freshman wide receiver Erik Lora got a little extra football in this summer as he was selected as a member of the junior U.S. National Football Team. Lora competed in the Junior World Football Games helping the USA win gold as he made six catches for 75 yards and one touchdown in the three game tournament. panthers picked 3rd in ovc Eastern Illinois was selected to finish third in the OVC preseason coaches poll that was released mid-summer. The Panthers received two first place votes as five teams received at least one first place vote. Eastern Kentucky was selected to finish first with UT Martin picked second. Probable league favorite Jacksonville State was not eligible for the OVC title based on an NCAA APR penalty for this season.

The Governors scored with 35 seconds remaining as Gary Orr hit Scott Thomas on a 3-yard pass. Cory Leman broke up Orr s two-point conversion pass to keep APSU from pulling to within one score. The Panthers opened up with two possessions inside the APSU 30 yard line. CJ James blocked a punt to give EIU the ball on the 9-yard line on the first score while a bad APSU punt on the next possession gave EIU the ball at the 30-yard line. The two teams combined for nine turnovers and three blocked kicks as the two top teams in the OVC battled down to the final drive. EIU led at the half after Mon Williams scored from 1 yard out and Christensen connected with Chavar Watkins for a 45-yard touchdown. EIU went up on the first drive of the second half as Christensen hit Chris Wright from 22 yards out. However the Panthers could not hold the lead as C.J. Walker gave EKU a lead with a 1-yard run late in the third quarter and Caldwell picked off a Christensen pass and returned it for a score to give the Colonels their final total. Paterno ranks first on the list of Division I active coaches at the same school serving at Penn State since Spoo is fifth on that same list working at EIU since Penn State quickly jumped on the board scoring on their first five possessions. Daryll Clark scored on a one yard run with 7:01 to go in the first quarter and tossed three second quarter touchdown passes. EIU has a chance to score going into the half but the Nittany Lions forced a Jake Christensen fumble at the nine yard line that Navarro Brown returned 91-yards to make it 38-3 at the half. The Panthers lone score of the game was a 43-yard field goal by Austin Signor at the 9:35 mark of the third quarter.

EIU built an early 20-0 lead on a pair of Austin Signor field goals, a Mon Williams run and Chris Wright touchdown reception and seemed to have the game in hand. Following a TTU punt that was pinned at the 1 yard line, the Golden Eagles recorded a safety with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. They later kept another drive alive as EIU was called for a roughing the kicker call on a punt. Lee Sweeney completed two fourth quarter touchdown passes to bring TTU to within Signor added a field goal with 53 seconds left to give EIU an eight point lead. TTU had an 81-yard kick return to get the ball at the EIU 18 with 35 seconds left, but the Panthers defense shut the door on four straight plays.
