Sports Network/FCS Coaches THE GAME Last year s co-defending champions Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Martin square off for the Panthers 91st edition of homecoming on Saturday afternoon at O Brien Stadium. Last season Tennessee Martin was able to knock off Eastern Illinois 15-9 during the Skyhawks homecoming contest in Martin. This year the two squads enter on different ends of the spectrum. EIU needs to win to keep pace in the OVC race and keep any possible NCAA FCS playoff hopes alive. The Panthers most likely need to win out to have any post-season hopes. Tennessee Martin had a cinderella season last year finishing at 9-3 to earn the schools first Division I playoff berth. This year the slipper has faded a little as the Skyhawks are 1-6. Eastern Illinois enters at 4-3 overall after a hang on victory at Murray State over the weekend. The Panthers are third in the OVC with a 3-1 mark. Tennessee Martin may be 1-6 on the year but they have lost their three OVC games by a combined nine points. UTM turned the corner last Saturday with a win over Samford. EASTERN ILLINOIS-TENNESSEE MARTIN SERIES Until recent year s Eastern Illinois dominated the series with Tennessee Martin. Last year UTM won 15-9 in Martin to give them two wins in the last four years. The schools have met since 1995 with EIU holding a commanding 10-2 series lead. EIU is 6-0 against Tennessee Martin all time at O Brien Stadium with the closest contest coming in 1995 with a EIU victory. RADIO Hit Mix 88.9 FM Play-by-Play... Mike Bradd Analyst... Spoo returned this year for his second run at his 20th season as the EIU head coach winning the season opener over Tennessee Tech. His career record is at EIU including a mark in OVC action. He ranks third all-time in OVC wins trailing Eastern Kentucky s Roy Kidd (207) and Tennessee Tech s Don Wade (60). Spoo is a 1960 graduate of Purdue University. TENNESSEE MARTIN HEAD COACH JASON SIMPSON Jason Simpson is in the midst of his second season as head coach at Tennessee Martin. During his first year, Simpson helped guide the Skyhawks into uncharted waters as they shared the OVC regular-season championship with Eastern Illinois and made their first NCAA FCS playoff appearance. Simpson was named the OVC Coach of the Year with UTM finishing the season at 9-3. This year the Skyhawks have fallen short in several close games and Simpson s career record now stands at 10-9 overall. Simpson played baseball and football at Mississippi State before transferring to finish his baseball career at Southern Mississippi. He earned his degree from Southern Miss in SCOUTING TENNESSEE MARTIN The Skyhawks come into this week s game with a much better team than their record indicates. The offensive is triggered by co-ovc Offensive Player of the Year Don Chapman who has been contained to only 80.3 yards per game this season. Tennessee Martin also features a mobile quarterback in Dexter Anoka who has thrown for 1249 yards while running for another 148. The Skyhawks defense is also very active with Josh Yarbrough and Dontrell Miller the top tacklers at 60 and 59 stops. Despite only one pass interception this season, UTM does have 23 pass break-ups on the season. NUMBER TO REMEMBER This week s number to remember is 7... that is the number of rushing touchdowns the Panthers defense has allowed this season. Murray State was the first team to score multiple rushing touchdowns against EIU with both coming in the second half when All-American linebacker Donald Thomas was on the sidelines with a foot injury. Prior to Murray State s third quarter rushing score, Eastern Illinois has gone eight straight quarters without allowing a rushing touchdown. A LITTLE HISTORY This will be the second time that Eastern Illinois has hosted Tennessee Martin for homecoming. The previous meeting was Oct. 25, 2003 when Vincent Webb rushed for 206 yards to lead EIU to a victory over the Skyhawks. EIU is 6-0 all time against UTM at O Brien Stadium and the Panthers have won seven straight homecoming games. MATCH-UPS TO WATCH THIS WEEK PRIDE FACTOR OF BOTH TEAMS The pride of both football teams may be one of the biggest factors in this week s game. Eastern Illinois is still in the hunt for both an OVC title and FCS playoff berth. To accomplish both of those items, EIU probably needs to win out and then get some help. Tennessee Martin has already been eliminated from any title hopes or playoff possibilities, still the Skyhawks have a good number of players back from last year s playoff team that would like to spoil any post-season plans for EIU. WHICH TEAM CAN MAKE CLUTCH FIELD GOALS One of Eastern Illinois Achilles heels this season has been the absence of a field goal game. The Panthers have struggled this season with Tyler Wilke only hitting on 4-of-9 attempts this season. He is only 1-for-5 beyond 30 yards. Tennessee Martin s kicker Tom Hansen has been one of the better kickers in the OVC this season hitting on 73 percent of his attempts. Hansen is perfect from inside of 40 yards going 7-for-7.

3 October 20, 2007 Eastern Illinois vs. Tennessee Martin Page 3 LAST TIME OUT Seniors Ademola Adeniji and Micah Rucker each posted career days as the Panthers escaped Murray State with a win during the Racers homecoming game. Adeniji ran for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He just missed a fourth touchdown when the ball was stripped as he was reaching for the goal line. Rucker hauled in 11 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers made it seven straight games without an interception. Despite the big offensive numbers, Joel Evers had to recover an onside kick attempt with 20 seconds left to help preserve the win. Murray State was able to take advantage of three EIU fumbles including two on punt returns. CAMPANELLA A DRADDY SEMIFINALIST Senior tight end Jordan Campanella has been named a semifinalist for the 2007 Draddy Trophy presented by the National Football Foundation. One of college football s most sought after and competitive awards, the Draddy Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. Campanella currently has a 3.87 GPA in political science. This season Campanella has 11 catches for 123 yards and one touchdown. NO INTERCEPTIONS STREAK STILL ALIVE Eastern Illinois extended its school record of games without an interception to seven straight as the Panthers had 29 more passing attempts on Saturday at Murray State. EIU is currently chasing the national record of pass attempts without an interception which was set by Lamar in Lamar was not intercepted in 275 straight attempts over a stretch of eight games. EIU is currently up to 208 attempts in seven games with two different quarterbacks - Cole Stinson & Bodie Reeder - combining for those attempts. COACH FOR A DAY A new program started this season allows EIU faculty and staff members to sign up for a chance to be a Coach For A Day. This allows the individual to attend pregame drills and stand on the sideline during the contest. This week EIU has two Coach For A Day participants in Don Dawson, Gateway Academic Advisor and Debbie Cunningham, Sociology Instructor. In addition to rushing for a new career high against the Racers, Adeniji also moved into 13th place on the EIU career rushing charts with 1,634 yards. He has scored eight touchdowns on the season which ranks first on the EIU team and sixth in the OVC. Counting only conference contests this, Adeniji currently ranks first among OVC rushers with 122 yards per game in OVC action. Chris Fletcher of Austin Peay is second at while Tennessee State s Javarris Williams is third at Adeniji needs to average 96.5 yards per game over the final four contests to crack the 1,000 yard mark for the season.

Senior Donald Thomas was named to the mid-season Buck Buchanan Award watch list. Thomas is one of 16 players currently on the watch list. He holds the team lead with 55 tackles, four for loss, one pass break-up and one quarterback hurry. Eastern Illinois was able to get after the quarterback on Saturday at Murray State as the Panthers had three sacks. Trevor Frericks, Tim Kelly and Rashad Haynes were all credited with sacks against the Racers. Pierre Walters is the team leader with two. Eastern Illinois moved into a tie for 9th in the NCAA in rushing touchdowns as the Panthers increased their season total to 19 rushing scores. The national leader is Wofford with 25. Though they have not thrown an interception this season, all 11 of EIU s turnovers have come via the fumble. The 11 fumbles ranks EIU 112th out of 116 schools in fumbles lost this season. Four of those fumbles have been lost on punts and kickoffs. Serving as the primary kick returner in the last couple of games, Quinten Ponius has moved into 78th in the NCAA rankings in kick returns. Ponius is averaging 21.4 yards per kick return with a season long of 45 yards. Corner back Rashad Haynes continues to rank first in the OVC for interceptions with four on the season. Haynes also ranks tied for 16th in the NCAA ranks. The Panthers have picked off eight passes this season. OVC Predicted Order Of Finish 1. EASTERN ILLINOIS (8) 2. Jacksonville State (6) 3. Austin Peay Eastern Illinois Players On All-OVC Preseason Team Offense Micah Rucker - Wide Receiver Jordan Campanella - Tight End Anthony Rubican - Offensive Tackle Defense Pierre Walters - Defensive End Donald Thomas - Linebacker Seymour Loftman - Safety Eastern Illinois ability to convert on third down late in games has been part of its success this season. While converting 45 percent on the season, EIU raises that average in the fourth quarter converting on 14-of-26 attempts for 53.8 percent. The Panthers have done a good job of getting six when they enter the red zone. This season EIU has scored on 25 of 34 chances inside the red zone for a 73.5 percent rating. Of those 25 scores, 21 have been for touchdowns giving EIU a 61.7 percent touchdown rating in the redzone. The EIU defense has been solid in not allowing six points in the red zone. This season opponents have scored on 25 of 30 attempts in the red zone for 83.3 percent. While they may be scoring, most times they are walking away with three points as EIU has allowed only 14 touchdowns for a 46.6 percent rating. While Donald Thomas gets most of the defensive attention two new starters have really stepped up this season. Safeties Ke Andre Sams and Adrian Arrington have accepted the challenge to start this year. Sams is second on the team with 45 tackles while Arrington is third with 39. Arrington is the team leader with 32 solo tackles this year. Both have also picked off one pass for the defense. After a close call at Murray State, Eastern Illinois saw its streak of 23 straight weeks of being ranked in the Sports Network poll come to a close as the Panthers were the first team listed receiving votes. EIU did stay in the FCS Coaches poll at No. 24. Weekly OVC Award Winners (October 14) Offense - Cedric Johnson (JSU) Defense - Corey Reed (TTU) Special Teams - Zach Walden (JSU) Newcomer - Cedric Johnson (JSU) Kudos should be handed out the EIU offensive line as the Panthers once again rank among the nation s leaders in least amount of sacks and tackles for loss allowed. EIU is 11th nationally allowing only six sacks in seven games. EIU is rated No. 28 in tackles for loss allowed. The Panthers have played the last 2 1/2 games without the services of All-OVC tackle Anthony Rubican. Senior linebacker Matt Westrick has stepped up his play in OVC action ranking second on the team with 27 tackles including two for loss and two pass break-ups.

5 October 20, 2007 Eastern Illinois vs. Tennessee Martin Page 5 RUCKER BACK ON TARGET Eastern Illinois senior wide receiver Micah Rucker was back on target on Saturday at Murray State hauling in a career-high 11 passes for 153 yards. Rucker s previous career-high was 10 catches against Southeast Missouri last year. Rucker now has 41 catches on the year for 601 yards and five touchdowns. Rucker s 11 grabs were the ninth best single game effort by an Eastern Illinois receiver in a game. Willie White holds the single-game record with 15 catches against Illinois State in Andre Raymond (2002 at Hawaii) and Rob Mehalic (1981 vs. Delaware State) both rank second with 14 catches. COOK NOW NATION S LEADER IN PUNTING Following a three punt day that averaged 55.3 yards per punt, redshirt freshman punter Kevin Cook has moved into the national lead for punters with a 45.4 yard per punt average. For the season Cook has 27 punts with seven pinned inside the 20 yard line. He also has a season long of 61 yards. Cook holds a slight national lead over Jahmal Blanchard of Hampton who is also just over 45 yards per punt. Cook remains the only freshman to rank in the Top 15 in the nation and has been above a 42-yard average all season. The EIU single season record for punting average is 43.0 held by Jeff Gossett in Since 1963 only eight punters have averaged over 40 yards per punt, the last was Bill Besenhofer at 41.0 in SPECIAL TEAMS STARTERS In addition to naming starters on offense and defense, EIU special teams coordinator Justin Lustig has named three players as special teams starters. Those players are recognized for the contributions they make on special teams and to show what an important facet of the game special teams is. This year s special teams starters are seniors Ademola Adeniji and Nick Kray along with junior Quinten Ponius. A special teams starter can not be a starter at an offensive or defensive position. OUT FOR THE YEAR Eastern Illinois athletic training staff has announced that the following players will miss the entire season for a medical redshirt. The list includes junior wide receiver Adam Kesler, junior safety Seymour Loftman, senior linebacker Stephen Washington and senior offensive lineman William Hodor.
