A win in either contest would assure the Panthers of at-least a share of the Ohio Valley Conference title. EIU enters the contest following a bye week after winning back-to-back road games at Jacksonville State and Murray State. EIU is 5-1 in the OVC race with a half-game lead over Eastern Kentucky in the OVC standings. The Colonels are 5-2 and end the regular-season at Jacksonville State on Nov. 21. EIU is 2-1 at home this season and is 6-1 in November regular-season games since the 2005 season. UT Martin has won two straight OVC contests sandwiched around a bye week on Oct. 31. The Skyhawks have improved to 4-5 overall, 3-3 in the OVC race. UT Martin was predicted by some preseason polls to win the OVC title and is one of five teams still mathematically alive to win at least a share of the conference title. THE SERIES This will be 15th meeting between Eastern Illinois and UT Martin. The Panthers lead the all-time series 11-3 but the two schools have split the last six meetings with each team winning at their home field. This season EIU will play at Penn State matching two of the longest tenured head coaches head-to-head on Oct. 10. ut martin HEAD COACH jason simpson Jason Simpson enters his fourth season as the head coach at UT Martin making an immediate impact on the program. In his first season Simpson led the Skyhawks to a share of the OVC title and the school s first FCS playoff appearance. He was named the OVC Coach of the Year and finished fourth in the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year voting. Simpson has compiled a record including a mark in the OVC. He is one of just two OVC coaches with a winning record against Eastern Illinois (Dean Hood of EKU is the other). Simpson is a 1995 graduate of Southern Miss. SCOUTING UT MARTIN The Skyhawks feature a dynamic offense with reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Year Cade Thompson at quarterback. Thompson has passed for 2,028 yards this season and 12 touchdowns as UTM is averaging 26.6 points per game. The offense is balanced by the dual running attack of Miguel Barnes and Brandyn Young. Barnes has 686 yards rushing with 9 touchdowns while Young has 576 yards with 6 touchdowns. The defense is led by linebacker Josh Bey with 82 tackles including 13.5 for loss and 6.5 sacks. Rk. The Panthers scored 14 points in each quarter as Anthony Buich was 15-for-17 for 330 yards. Wayne Brown rushed for 174 yards. double specialists In the Panthers last action prior to the bye week, kick Austin Signor and punter Kevin Cook were co-ohio Valley Conference Special Teams Players of the Week. Signor converted on 3-of-3 field goals in the win over Murray State as he moved up to 7th on the single season field goals made list with 13. Signor was also a weapon on kickoffs sending his 22nd kick for a touchback this season. He continues to lead the FCS ranks and ranks fourth among all Division I kickers. Cook was a weapon on special teams averaging 46 yards per punt including 5 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Cook increased his season punting average to 41.5 yards which ranks 11th nationally and 1st in the OVC. coming off a bye week Eastern Illinois has had mixed results coming off of recent bye weeks with a 2-1 record since the 2005 season. In 2005 the Panthers picked up a win over Southeast Missouri when returning from an off week. During the 2006 season EIU did not have a bye week as the open date on the schedule was filled with a 12th contest at Hawaii. In 2007 the Panthers triumphed over Jacksonville State following a bye weekend. Last season EIU did not fare as well as the Panthers lost to UT Martin following a bye weekend. Since moving to NCAA Division I level, EIU is 5-9 following bye weeks. Believe In Blue 12 NCAA FCS Playoff Appearances OVC Champs 2006, 2005, 2002, 2001

3 November 14, 2009 Eastern Illinois vs. UT Martin Page 3 haynes climbs a spot Junior cornerback Rashad Haynes collected his first interception of the season on Oct. 31 at Murray State and made the most of the pick scoring the Panthers lone touchdown in a victory. For Haynes it was the 10th interception of his career moving him into 7th on the Panthers career interceptions list. It was his second career interception returned for a touchdown and third defensive score of his career (other on a fumble return). Haynes now ranks 12th on the NCAA active career leaders list for interceptions. This season he has eight pass break-ups and one interception to rank 44th nationally in passes defended. For the Panther defense the interception return marked the second defensive touchdown of the season. BURGE ADDS ANOTHER SACK Sophomore Perry Burge added another sack to his season total on Oct. 31 at Murray State as he increased his team leading total to five sacks. That number ranks Burge third in the OVC in sacks and is one shy of the high total from last season (Donovan Johnson - 6). The last Panther defensive player to record double digit sacks for a season was Mike Carlin with ten in SPREADING THE BALL AROUND Spreading the Ball Around Receiver...Catches-Yards-TD Jimmy Potempa Kenny Whittaker Chris Wright Charles Graves Lorence Ricks Erik Lora Quarterback Jake Christensen is on the verge of cracking several single season Top 10 lists as he has helped guide the Panthers to a 7-2 start. Even more impressive is the fact that Christensen is doing it by spreading the ball around to a multitude of receivers. On the season 12 different receivers have caught a pass with six receivers hauling in ten or more receptions on the year. The top two targets to date have been slot back Jimmy Potempa and slot receiver Kenny Whittaker. In addition to hitting receivers for pass receptions, Christensen has also hit seven different receivers for touchdown passes. Chris Wright is the team leader with four touchdown grabs. LIMITING THE FIELD GOALS Against Murray State on Oct. 31, Eastern Illinois allowed just its second made field goal of the season during their win over the Racers. EIU has limited opponents to only five field goal attempts all season with only Penn State and Murray State making successful kicks. By comparison EIU has converted on 13-of-19 field goal attempts this season with kicker Austin Signor ranking 1st in the OVC and 10th nationally in field goals made. Only twice this season has Signor been held without a field goal attempt at Southeast Missouri and Jacksonville State, both EIU wins. This week s opponent UT Martin is 1-of-6 on season field goal attempts. Team (NR)... EIU enters this weekend s game ranked 17th in fewest penalties committed this season at 5.11 per game and 23rd in fewest penalty yards at EIU s worst game in terms of penalties this season was in week two where they committed ten penalties for 78 yards. The season low was two penalties for 15 yards in a loss at Penn State. In attendance at today s Eastern Illinois football game is U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Darrell Hampton of Blue Island, Illinois. MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE HONORS FOUR A founding member of what was then known as the Gateway Football Conference in 1985, the league is celebrating its 25th anniversary season with four former Panther standouts being named to the Silver Anniversary team in what is now called the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The four players honored by the league include Sean Payton, Willie High, John Jurkovic and Ray McElroy. The MVFC also honored former players in the league as an All-NFL team with Jurkovic and McElroy being honored. More information on each player is listed on the attached release. MILLARD STREAK CONTINUES Senior center Chaz Millard continues his streak of consecutive games without allowing a sack as he played against Murray State. Millard has not allowed a sack for 35 straight games playing right guard the last two seasons and center the first six games this year. That streak dates back to Nov. 4, 2006 when Millard allowed a sack to Tennessee State. rushing defense Make it nine straight games this season and ten overall dating back to last year that Eastern Illinois has held an opposing running back to less than 100 yards on the ground. On Saturday the top Murray State rusher was limited to just 34 yards as the Racers gained only 41 yards on the ground. The Panthers are currently 31st in the nation in rushing defense allowing just 112 yards per game. EIU has limited a team to less than 50 yards rushing three times this season and less than 100 yards during five games. PLAYING AS A RANKED TEAM Eastern Illinois will be playing its 141st game as a ranked FCS team this Saturday with the Panthers holding a alltime record as a ranked team. When you subtract the losses to FBS teams and other ranked FCS teams, EIU has posted an impressive (90 %) record against non-ranked teams. ball control game When Eastern Illinois and UT Martin have played this season each team has attempted to dominate the game in terms of time of possession. UTM and EIU rank first and second in the OVC in time of possession with the Skyhawks averaging 32:22 minutes per game and the Panthers 31:47 per game. Both totals rank in the top 25 nationally. Going hand-in-hand with time of possession has been both teams ability to convert on third down. UT Martin leads the OVC at 42.7 percent conversion rate while EIU is second at 42.5 percent. Again both numbers rank in the top 25 nationally. WALKER LEADS BALANCED RUN Chevon Walker was the most effective running back in the win over Murray State as he finished with 55 yards on 8 carries for a 6.9 yard per carry average. It was his best effort since a 63 yard night earlier in the year at Southeast Missouri. Also splitting the load at Murray State were Mon Williams with 10 runs for 46 yards and Jimmy Potempa with 12 carries for 41 yards. Only once this season has an EIU running back carried the ball more than 20 times in a game with Mon Williams getting 29 carries in the win over Tennessee Tech. That string will continue over the next two years with a trip to Iowa set for 2010 and Northwestern in WALTERS MAKES THE CUT The Panthers will have yet another face in the National Football League this season as 2008 graduate Pierre Walters was among those players named to the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2009 NFL season. The video board also includes a new stateof-the-art sound system. The scoreboard system was purchased from Daktronics, Inc., and will provide a new dimension to the Panthers home game experience. The only catch is that Panther fans will now have to get accustomed to turning north instead of south were the previous scoreboards have stood for 40 years. o brien field turns 40 Eastern Illinois will play its 40th season of intercollegiate football at O Brien Field this season. The field was originally opened as Lincoln Field in 1970 with the Panthers losing the dedication game on Sept. 12 against Indiana State, The field complex was later renamed O Brien Field in honor of former football, track and cross country coach Maynard Pat O Brien. In the 40 years at O Brien, EIU has posted a record (69 percent) with seven undefeated seasons. MILLARD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Senior Chaz Millard has been named a preseason All- American by several publications after earning honorable mention All-American honors each of the past two seasons at right guard. He enters the 2009 season with a streak of 26 games without allowing a sack. He graded out at 93 percent last season with 57 decleater blocks. FATHER/SON COMBO When Jake Christensen suits up at quarterback for Eastern Illinois he will join his father as one of two recent Panther father/ son combinations. Christensen s father Jeff played quarterback at EIU from and left as the school s career leading passer with 6,282 yards. He has since fallen to fourth but does still rank in many single season and career top ten lists at EIU. Last season linebacker Shannon Cobb was a member of the Panthers team after his father David was a defensive back on the 1978 EIU Division II National Championship team. LORA REPRESENTS TEAM USA Incoming freshman wide receiver Erik Lora got a little extra football in this summer as he was selected as a member of the junior U.S. National Football Team. Lora competed in the Junior World Football Games helping the USA win gold as he made six catches for 75 yards and one touchdown in the three game tournament. panthers picked 3rd in ovc Eastern Illinois was selected to finish third in the OVC preseason coaches poll that was released mid-summer. The Panthers received two first place votes as five teams received at least one first place vote. Eastern Kentucky was selected to finish first with UT Martin picked second. Daryll Clark scored on a one yard run with 7:01 to go in the first quarter and tossed three second quarter touchdown passes. EIU has a chance to score going into the half but the Nittany Lions forced a Jake Christensen fumble at the nine yard line that Navarro Brown returned 91-yards to make it 38-3 at the half. The Panthers lone score of the game was a 43-yard field goal by Austin Signor at the 9:35 mark of the third quarter. Believe In Blue 12 NCAA FCS Playoff Appearances OVC Champs 2006, 2005, 2002, 2001

EIU built an early 20-0 lead on a pair of Austin Signor field goals, a Mon Williams run and Chris Wright touchdown reception and seemed to have the game in hand. Following a TTU punt that was pinned at the 1 yard line, the Golden Eagles recorded a safety with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. They later kept another drive alive as EIU was called for a roughing the kicker call on a punt. Lee Sweeney completed two fourth quarter touchdown passes to bring TTU to within Signor added a field goal with 53 seconds left to give EIU an eight point lead. TTU had an 81-yard kick return to get the ball at the EIU 18 with 35 seconds left, but the Panthers defense shut the door on four straight plays. Lorence Ricks was a force on special teams scoring one touchdown with an 87- yard kick return and setting up another score with a blocked punt which EIU recovered at the 5 yard line. EIU built an early 14-0 lead as Erik Lora caught a Jake Christensen pass that had bounced off of Ricks for a 6-yard score. Mon Williams rushed in from 4 yards out for his seventh game this season with a touchdown. Leading 28-20, EIU was able to make a stand on the final drive of the game for the second straight week as CJ James intercepted a Ryan Perrilloux pass with 1:38 remaining to ice the game. Trailing 7-0, Rashad Haynes picked off a pass and raced 34-yards for a touchdown to tie the game in the second quarter. Kicker Austin Signor would knock home three field goals from 37, 37 and 36 yards to provide the Panthers with their additional points. The EIU defense woud limit Murray State to just 41 yards rushing and 168 yards of total offense. Nick Nasti and Gordy Kickels each tallied eight tackles to lead the Panthers defense as EIU recorded six sacks. Believe In Blue 12 NCAA FCS Playoff Appearances OVC Champs 2006, 2005, 2002, 2001
