October 6, p.m. TV: ESPN+ NOTES TO KNOW Alexander Hollins continues to be a touchdown machine for the Eastern Illinois offense as he hauled in two more touchdowns at Tennessee Tech. The senior wide receiver leads the nation with nine touchdown receptions. He is also second in the nation in receiving yards with 601 and second in the nation in receptions with 43. Eastern Illinois offense scored 52 points on Saturday giving the Panthers three straight games with 40 or more points in a game for the first time since The last time EIU scored 40 or more points in four straight games was the 2002 season between October 19 and November 16. Nick Bruno was named the Ohio Valley Conference Special Teams Player of the Week following EIU s win over Tennessee Tech. Bruno was 7-of-7 on extra points adding a 22-yard field goal to finish the game with ten points. He is the fourth EIU player to win an OVC weekly award this season. After not forcing a turnover in the first three games of the season, Eastern Illinois has now forced five in the last three games. Against Tennessee Tech Dytarious Johnson intercepted a pass while BJ Ojo recovered a fumble forced by Josh Price. Harry Woodbery had his first start of the season at Tennessee Tech and responded with a five touchdown performance. Woodbery was 32-of-49 for 339 yards and the five touchdowns. EIU holds a alltime series lead and won last season in double overtime as Terrell Greer and Mack Weaver blocked a Racers field goal attempt. Hollins needs two more touchdown receptions this year to move into a four-way tie for ninth place at EIU. He needs five more touchdowns this season to move into 10th on the career list. Alexander Hollins continues to move up the EIU career list for receiving yards as he now has 90 catches for 1,295 yards. He is now 19th on the career list passing Andre Raymond last weekend. Hollins has three players within striking distance this weekend with Jason Cook 18 yards away in 18th place. Harry Woodbery passed for 339 yards in his first career start for the Panthers going 32-of- 49 for 339 yards. He became the fourth EIU quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in their first carer start joining Mitch Kimble (323 yards) against Western Illinois in 2016, Mike Simpson with 321 against Western Michigan in 1996 and Sean Payton with 325 against Grand Valley State in Harry Woodbery had five touchdown passes against Tennessee Tech as he became the first EIU quarterback since Jimmy Garoppolo to pass for five or more touchdowns in a game. Garoppolo accomplished the feat seven times, the last against UT Martin in November of Sean Payton (twice), Tony Romo (twice), Jeff Christensen and Steve Turk are the only other EIU quarterbacks to ever pass for five or more touchdowns in a game. Eastern Illinois has had a two-headed quarterback this season with Johnathan Brantley and Harry Woodbery. Earlier this season Brantley passed for 443 yards against Indiana State. For the season Brantley is 89-of-139 for 965 yards and seven touchdowns. He ranks 15th in the NCAA in completion percentage, 38th in passing yards and 40th in passing touchdowns. Woodbery had his first start at Tennessee Tech passing for 339 yards. For the season Woodbery is 61-of-96 for 661 yards and eight touchdowns. He is 31st in the NCAA in completion percentage and 35th in passing touchdowns. As a team Eastern Illinois has had only one interception thrown this season in five games. The Panthers currently have a streak of 163 straight passes without an interception combined between quarterbacks Johnathan Brantley and Harry Woodbery. The school record for consecutive passes without an interception is 218 during the 2007 season with quarterbacks Cole Stinson and Bodie Reeder. While Eastern Illinois chases the team record for consecutive passes without an interception, quarterback Johnathan Brantley is also chasing the school individual record. Brantley has thrown 132 straight passes without an interception. The record is 164 set by Jalen Whitlow in 2014 breaking the previous record of 157 set by Jimmy Garoppolo in Quarterback Harry Woodbery has a streak of 60 straight passes without a pick. Junior wide receiver / tight end James Sheehan has picked up his production for the Panthers offense over the last two games. Sheehan had seven catches for 79 yards and touchdowns at Tennessee Tech. That performance was coming off an eight catch, 84 yard effort against Tennessee State. For the season Sheehan is third on the EIU squad with 24 catches for 232 yards. He entered the season with 22 career catches for 229 yards. Isaiah Johnson had his best rushing game of the season at Tennessee Tech as he had 161 yards on 20 carries for an 8.1 yards per carry average. He added a 46 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was the third 100-yard rushing game of Johnson s career. He has 954 yards for his career as he creeps closer to becoming the 29th player in school history to rush for 1,000 or more yards in their Panther career. Eastern Illinois cracked the 50-point mark last week as they beat Tennessee Tech to move to 1-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. It was the fifth time that the Panthers have scored 50 or more points under head coach Kim Dameron. The last time was Sept. 24, 2016 when EIU scored 56 against Austin Peay. Watson ended the day with five total tackles as he has 21 for the season. He currently ranks third in the OVC in both tackles for loss (6.5) and sacks (3). Javon Turner made his first career start against Tennessee Tech filling in for injured defensive back Mark Williams. Turner responded to the challenge finishing the game with a team-high nine tackles. A converted wide receiver, Turner has appeared in all five games this season and has now made 17 tackles with two pass break-ups. Eastern Illinois was able to slow down the Tennessee Tech run game on Saturday as the Panthers held the Golden Eagles to 98 yards on 33 carries for a 3.0 yards per carry average. It was the second time this season that the EIU defense has held an opponent under 100 yards rushing. In the opener at Arkansas, the Razorbacks rushed for 80 yards on 37 carries. The Panthers defense also did not allow TTU to score a rushing touchdown. The last time EIU kept an opponent from scoring a rushing touchdown in a game was Oct. 28 last season at UT Martin. Senior Josh Price had a good game at Tennessee Tech as the defensive end was one of four EIU players to finish with six tackles in a balanced defensive attack. Price was credited for a half sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. In the fourth quarter he forced a fumble that was recovered by BJ Ojo. This season Price is fourth on the team with 28 tackles. After not forcing a turnover in the first three games of the season, Eastern Illinois defense had back-to-back games with multiple turnovers forced. In the game against Tennessee State, EIU forced three turnovers. The Panthers followed that up with a two turnover game at Tennessee Tech. Under head coach Kim Dameron, EIU s defense has now forced two or more turnovers in a game 27 times. Eastern Illinois offense did not commit a turnover against Tennessee Tech during the Panthers win. It was the first time since last year s season opener at Indiana State that the Panthers had played a game without committing a turnover on offense. The last time EIU played back-to-back games without committing a turnover was Oct. 18 & 25, 2014 against Southeast Missouri and Tennessee State. Kicker Nick Bruno moved up the Eastern Illinois record book in several categories following last week s win at Tennessee Tech. Bruno was 7-of-7 on extra points as he is now 130-of-133 for his career. He is now third on the career PATs list needing three to tie Chad Larner for second place. Bruno s 22 yard field goal attempt was his third make of the year as he is now tied with Cameron Berra for second on the career field goals list with 34. Bruno made a career long 48 yard field goal against Tennessee State on Sept. 22. The ten points scored by Bruno moved him into sixth place with 232 points passing Roy Banks. Eastern Illinois tied a school record racking up 38 first downs last Saturday against Tennessee Tech as the Panthers ran 88 plays on offense. For the season EIU ranks sixth in the country in first downs offense with 123 for an average of just over 24 first downs per game. The Panthers are 18th in the country in 3rd down conversion at 45.7 percent. The 38 first downs tied the school record set on Oct. 6, 2012 against UT Martin. The last time EIU had 30 or more first downs in a game was Sept. 24, 2016 with 34 against Austin Peay. Eastern Illinois offensive line did not allow a sack against Tennessee Tech last week with 49 pass attempts. The last time EIU did not allow a sack in a game was last season on Sept. 30 at Tennessee State. The last time that EIU had two straight games without allowing a sack was the 2015 season when the Panthers played the final eight games of the season including the FCS playoff game without allowing a sack. EIU s offense line put together a string of 636 straight plays without allowing a sack and ranked fifth in the nation that season in fewest sacks allowed. Dameron led the Panthers to the FCS playoffs in 2015 as EIU was ranked 23rd in the final FCS Coaches poll. Dameron was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech prior to taking the EIU head job and has more than 15 years of experience as a defensive coordinator with more than 30 years of experience as a college coach. Dameron served as the EIU defensive coordinator in 2000 helping the program rebound from a 2-10 season in 1999 to an 8-4 record and FCS playoff appearance in Dameron played football at Arkansas appearing in four bowl games between He is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas. MURRAY STATE HEAD COACH MITCH STEWART When former Murray State hired Mitch Stewart as their head coach he became the youngest coach at the NCAA Division I level in A 2005 graduate of Valdosta State Stewart served four seasons as the offensive coordinator for Murray State under former head coach Chris Hatcher and still runs the up-tempo offense that he learned as a player and assistant coach. Murray State is 11-26, 9-15 in the OVC as the Racers head coach with two wins over Top 25 teams. SCOUTING MURRAY STATE After opening the season 0-3, Murray State rebounded with a win in its Ohio Valley Conference opener as the Racers beat UT Martin Quincy Williams was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week recording 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and an 82-yard interception return for touchdown. Williams is the top tackler this season for Murray State with 38 tackles. On offense, transfer quarterback Drew Anderson has passed for 850 yards and four touchdowns. The Racers have turned the ball over ten times this season with five interceptions thrown and five fumbles lost. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY Oct. 6, Eastern Illinois opened the 1928 season with a tie against Millikin University. It proved to be the only blemish on the Panthers record that season under Coach Charles Lantz as EIU posted a record and won the Little 19 Championship. EIU s defensive unit would allow only nine points the remainder of the season posting four straight shutouts to end the year. One of the stand out players on that team was end Chuck Ashmore, father of current EIU color analyst Jack Ashmore. HALL OF FAME WEEKEND Eastern Illinois will induct its 2018 EIU Athletic Hall of Fame Class this weekend as the Panthers host Murray State. The five inductees will be honored at halftime of the football game after the official induction ceremony takes place earlier in the day on Saturday. This years EIU Hall of Fame Class includes former football linebacker Jeff Mills who ranks third all-time in tackles at EIU with 426. Three of the wins were in overtime with two of them coming in double overtime. The wins on the season came in a variety of ways with two last play touchdown wins, two defensive stands, one game winning field goal and one game winning field goal block. EIU placed seven players on the All-OVC team and had defensive back Mark Williams earn Freshman All-American honors. In 2016 the Panthers quickly climbed into the FCS playoff picture as they knocked off FBS member Miami (Ohio) and beat No. 5 ranked Illinois State in the Mid-America Classic. Dameron would guide EIU to a No. 13 ranking in the polls at the midway portion of the season. The Panthers would face several key injuries late in the season and finished the year at 6-5 overall following a 24-0 win at Eastern Kentucky to end the season. EIU was 4-4 in the OVC. The Panthers had four players earn All-OVC honors with Devin Church and Seth McDonald both earning first team honors. Dameron returned the Panthers to the FCS playoffs in 2015 as EIU won seven of their last eight regular season games to finish with a 7-4 regular season record. EIU lost in the opening round of the FCS playoffs at Northern Iowa. The Panthers were ranked No. 23 in the final FCS Coaches poll after making their 16th all-time FCS playoff appearance. During the season Dameron s team produced six All-OVC players including co-defensive Player of the Year Dino Fanti. Dameron would have his first player from Eastern Illinois drafted in May of 2016 when linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill became a sixth round selection of the New England Patriots. In his first season Dameron coached the Panthers to a 5-7 record including 5-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Panthers were in the championship race until the final weeks of the season. Dameron s first career victory came on Sept. 20 against Austin Peay as the Panthers won In the game EIU tied a school record for rushing yards with 413. The team featured three All-American selections including first team offensive lineman Collin Seibert and freshman All-American kicker Nick Bruno. Dameron s squad had five first team All-OVC selections and five second team All-OVC honorees. The team was among the best on both sides of the ball in the OVC ranking second in total offense (11th nationally) and third in total defense. Dameron spent the 2013 season as the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech where he directed a much improved defensive unit. The Bulldogs finished ranked 69th in the nation in total defense under Dameron s direction after being ranked 120th the previous season. Dameron s defense was the fourth most-improved squad in the FBS last season. An experienced defensive coach with more than 15 years as a defensive coordinator Dameron took over an Eastern Illinois program that advanced to the FCS playoff quarterfinals last season. It is Dameron s second stint in Charleston as he previously worked as the defensive coordinator at EIU in 2000 as a member of head coach Bob Spoo s staff. During that 2000 season, Dameron helped transform the Panthers defense as they rebounded from a 2-10 season in 1999 to 8-4 and Ohio Valley Conference Champions in Dameron spent three seasons as the safeties coach at Ole Miss as the team appeared in two Cotton Bowls. Two of his players were selected in the NFL draft as his pass defense unit ranked 11th in the NCAA in pass efficiency defense and 15th in pass defense. Prior to his stint at Ole Miss, Dameron was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe as the program became bowl eligible at the FBS level for the first time in 2007 while also picking up a win over Alabama. The ULM defense led the Sun Belt Conference in fewest points allowed and ranking third nationally in turnovers gained. Dameron has previous stops as the defensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin and as the secondary coach at Cincinnati and UNLV. He spent the 1999 season as the secondary coach in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts. He has previous FCS coaching experience on the staffs of Murray State and Missouri State where he helped coach both teams to FCS playoff appearances. Dameron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Lou Holtz at Arkansas, his alma mater, after earning his degree. He was a fouryear player for the Razorbacks from at wide receiver and defensive back. As a Razorback he participated in four bowl games including the 1979 Sugar Bowl. Dameron and his wife Debbie, have one daughter Krystle. Krystle and her husband Mike, gave birth to daughter Emma the day prior to Dameron coaching his first collegiate game as a head coach on August 28, 2014 at Minnesota.
