Senior forward Lukas Winegarner broke his foot and is lost for the season while Sharif Almulla was injured against Eckerd. 10 GAME 1: Washburn 65, Rollins 42 LAS VEGAS, Nev. (November 8, 2013) Rollins was slow to get out of the gate and never got rolling as the Tars fell to Washburn Friday at the Las Vegas Tip-off Classic. Chris Uhle led Rollins (0-1) with nine points, three rebounds and three blocks. Mitch Woods added six points and four rebounds with Scott Schuette and Jeff Dirkin each scoring five. Schuette also hauled in a team-high six rebounds. The Tars defense was stout to start, but it took nearly six minutes for the first field goal of the season as a Woods 3-pointer broke the streak and closed Rollins to within 9-4. A Schuette triple midway through the half closed Rollins to 15-9 before the Icabods rolled off a 12-3 run over the next five minutes and led Adam Allen stopped the spurt with a layup, but the Tars again went cold and went into halftime down In the second half, it took Rollins 9:26 to find its first field goal while Washburn pulled away to a lead. The Tars then amped up the defensive pressure and took advantage of turnovers, cutting the deficit to with 5:35 to play. That would be as close as Rollins would get the rest of the night as the Tars dropped their season opener for the second straight year. Rollins shot just 25 percent (13-of-52) from the field and 11 percent (3-of-26) from long range. Washburn hit 23-of-53 (43 percent), including 9-of-18 (50 percent) from beyond the arc. The Rattlers added a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession, but a Blessig bucket, defensive stop, and Woods free throws pulled the Tars to within one, with 48 ticks on the clock. The defense then came up big again as Rollins took possession with 22 seconds left. After a timeout, the Tars couldn t convert on a final play and left Vegas winless. Scott Schuette connected from long range and gave the Tars their largest lead of the night, with 6:40 left. FSC then rolled off a 12-0 run and put the Tars down with just 4:26 to play. Rollins would trail by a score of with 1:46 to go, but refused to roll over. Dirkin got the comeback started with a conventional 3-point play and was followed by a Woods steal and breakaway dunk. Defensive stops by both team then put the ball in Blessig s hands with 15 seconds to play. The sophomore then knotted the score with a pull-up 15-footer and drew a foul. He missed the free throw, but Rollins came up with a big stop and the game headed to overtime. FSC led the majority of the extra frame, but again Rollins would not go away. Uhle put Rollins ahead on a step-back 3-pointer with just 45 seconds left. Woods later added a pair of free throws to make it a four-point game. Frank Adams cut the Tars lead in half, but that would be all the Tars would allow the rest of the way, scoring the season s first signature win. Rollins shot 52 percent, including doing 4-of-5 from the field in overtime. FSC was held to 39 percent shooting on the night. 19 GAME 19: Rollins 61, Saint Leo 59 Rollins saw its late lead evaporate, but came up with a final defensive stop at the buzzer, beating Saint Leo on the road Saturday. The victory comes on the heels of the Tars overtime upset of second-ranked Florida Southern Wednesday night. Rollins improves to 10-9 on the year and starts the second half of the Sunshine State Conference schedule 4-5. Alex Blessig scored 16 points and added seven rebounds to lead the Tars. Chris Uhle netted 14 despite being slowed by an injury in the first half. Mitch Woods and Adam Allen played through foul trouble all night and each scored 10. Jerrel Harris led Saint Leo (16-6, 4-5 SSC) with 15 points and six rebounds. Ron Foxx added 14 points and eight rebounds while Chim Kadima netted 10. Rollins controlled the action early, opening up a 17-7 advantage eight minutes into the first. Saint Leo came back with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to knot the score at 17. The Tars denied Leo the lead, but couldn t pull away. Foxx finally gave the hosts an upper hand with a pair of free throws at the one-minute mark, and then Harris drilled a 3-pointer to put Rollins down at halftime. Saint Leo s advantage however, would be short lived. Rollins scored the first six points of the second half, highlighted by a Woods steal and Blessig dunk that gave the Tars a lead. Harris heated up from deep to keep the Lions close before three Woods free throws and a Uhle 3-pointer put Rollins up with 13:12 left. The Tars lead grew to as many as 10 and sat at at the 3:05 mark. Harris again hit from deep and sparked a 7-0 Lions run that tied the score at 57 with just 1:09 left. Blessig quickly put Rollins on top with a jumper in transition and Woods turned a steal into a layup, putting the Tars back on top with 24 seconds left. Devin Crisosto hit a leaning jumper for Leo with eight seconds left to cut Rollins lead to two, and the Lions quickly fouled Blessig on the inbound. The sophomore point guard missed the front end of the one-and-one with the rebound going to Foxx who quickly moved it up court. Harris desperation 15-footer was off the mark and the Tars again came up on top of a close game. The Tars held Saint Leo to just 7-of-24 from the field in the second half and 36 percent shooting on the day. Rollins hit 24-of-56 (43 percent). GAME 20: Tampa 72, Rollins 57 Tampa jumped out to a big lead and Rollins never caught up as the Tars fell to the Spartans Wednesday in Sunshine State Conference action. Mitch Woods pumped in 17 points and added four assists to lead Rollins (10-10, 4-6 SSC). Adam Allen chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds while Alex Blessig recorded 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Da Marko Foster led Tampa (13-6, 6-4 SSC) and all scorers with 20 points on just 6-of-8 shooting. He knocked down 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 4-for-5 at the free throw line. Vincent Cornu added 13 points and eight rebounds while Ryan Kidd netted 12. The Tars hit just three field goals over the first 10 minutes and trailed Sharif Almulla connected from long range to get the Tars rolling, but UT heated up as well and kept the Tars at bay. Rollins dug into Tampa s lead at the end of the half, finishing the period on a small run to trail at intermission. A bombardment of 3-pointers to start the second closed the Tars to within with 14:26 to play. UT later extended its lead to seven before a Scott Schuette score made it with 10:45 left. The Spartans then ran off an 8-0 run to again grab a comfortable lead. Rollins had one more run left as a Jeff Dirkin dunk got the Tars to within at the 4:44 mark. That would be as close as they would get the rest of the way, however, as Tampa earned the season sweep over the Tars.
