MSU s matchup with the league-leading Sycamores will be broadcast live over the internet on ESPN3. The Lady Bears then travel to Normal, Ill., for a 7 p.m. Monday game against Illinois State (4-11, 3-2). The Redbirds have rebounded from a 1-9 non-conference record to sit in a tie for fourth in the MVC standings through three weeks of competition. The Illinois State game will air on the Missouri State Television Network, with local affiliate KCZ (Ozarks CW) carrying the action in the Springfield market. Indiana State broke MSU s series streaks of nine consecutive wins overall and four in a row in Terre Haute with a series sweep last season. Scouting Indiana State Indiana State is 10-6 overall and 5-0 in league play as the MVC preseason favorite. The Sycamores have won seven of their last eight games and are led by preseason all-mvc pick Anna Munn at 13.9 points per game. Fifth-year senior transfer Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir adds 13.6 points and 3.6 assists, and Rachael Mahan grabs 7.3 rebounds per game. As a team, Indiana State scores 63.4 points and allows 60.9 while shooting 37.9 percent overall, 31.7 percent on 3-pointers and 64.1 percent from the foul line. ISU also leads the Valley with 10.1 steals per game. Scouting the Lady Bears Missouri State is 7-9 and 2-3 in MVC play, defeating Bradley and Drake and losing to Wichita State, Loyola and UNI. Sophomore guard Kenzie Williams leads the Lady Bears in scoring (15.6) and assists (39) while shooting 42 percent from the field. Senior forward Bry Snow averages 11.8 points with a team-high 5.9 rebounds, while younger sister Tyonna checks in with 12.9 points, 4.7 boards and 2.9 steals per contest. As a team, the Lady Bears average 68.5 points and allow 71.3 while shooting 40.0 percent overall, 31.9 percent on 3-pointers and 65.3 percent from the foul line. Last Time Out The University of Northern Iowa made a season-high 13 3-pointers Monday night to top the Missouri State Lady Bears by a final in Missouri Valley Conference action at JQH Arena. The Panthers (8-9, 4-2 MVC) shot 46.4 percent from beyond the arc and buried their pivotal 13th trey of the game with 1:35 remaining after the Lady Bears (7-9, 2-3) had closed to within Missouri State got off to a quick start with Bry Snow tallying eight early points and Hannah Wilkerson nailing a 3-pointer for a 13-7 lead just 5:05 into the game. After Desiree Phillips hit a trey for a lead, the Panthers rattled off an 8-0 run to go up with 11:18 left in the first half. Two ties and two lead changes led to a deadlock before Wilkerson s transition layup capped an 8-0 run for the home team with the score and 3:56 on the clock. Missouri State held its lead early into the second half before UNI s Amber Sorenson put the Panthers ahead for the first time in 15 minutes with a 3-pointer at the 14:14 mark, and then hit another 33 seconds later as part of a 6-for-9 showing from distance and 18 points on a 4.6 average. Quick Hits The Lady Bears continue to get to the foul line at a high rate this season, building on a trend from last year in which the team led the nation with an average of free throw attempts per game. Missouri State averages attempts this year to lead the MVC and has made at least 10 free throws in 41 of its last 47 games while attempting at least 17 in 43 of the last 47 dating to the beginning of the campaign. Missouri State is also once again among the league leaders in offensive rebounding, currently leading the MVC with 14.9 offensive boards per contest after setting the school record at a season ago. MSU rebounds 37.9 percent of its misses this year and grabbed 41.4 percent last year. The Lady Bears played an eight-game stretch during the non-conference season against teams that played in either the NCAA Tournament, WNIT or WBI last season. In fact, only two of MSU s 11 non-conference opponents had a losing record last season, while six schools were picked to finish third or better in their respective preseason conference polls. MSU has been led in scoring by a sophomore in 12 of 16 games this year, with Kenzie Williams taking those honors seven times with Tyonna Snow accounting for five. Senior Bry Snow (3) and freshman Katie Palmer (1) hold the other four. The Snows have combined to score at least 35 points in three games this season with a high of 42 at North Texas when they had 21 apiece. Missouri State has utilized its bench heavily this season, with all available healthy players participating in 13 of 16 games thus far. Missouri State is overall (.615) since the beginning of the season, with a (.656) non-conference record and (.583) mark against MVC competition. MSU is at home since the beginning of the season, averaging 76.6 points in those 38 games while topping the 70-point mark 28 times and scoring 80 or more 17 times. Her teams have historically played their best in the postseason, as she holds a collective record in conference tournaments, NCAA Tournaments, and WNIT games. In fact, in 18 seasons as a Division I head coach, assistant coach and player, Harper has made 15 postseason appearances with a combined (.696) record, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and four WNIT bids. Harper was the head coach at North Carolina State from , directing the Wolfpack to three postseason appearances during her four years at the helm, including the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Prior to her stint in Raleigh, Harper piloted Western Carolina to a record and four postseason berths in five seasons, including a mark her final three seasons in Cullowhee as the Catamounts captured the first two Southern Conference Tournament titles in school history. In fact, MSU has one of just six coaching staffs among 351 nationally that scored more than 5,000 combined points at the Division level in their college careers. Head Coach Kellie (Jolly) Harper won three national titles at Tennessee under the legendary Pat Summitt, including a 39-0 junior season in The point guard scored 894 points and dished out 452 assists. The NCAA s all-time leading scorer, assistant Jackie Stiles poured in 3,393 points for Missouri State from The three-time All-American and 2001 National Player of the Year led the Lady Bears to their second Final Four that season. Assistant Jennifer Sullivan enjoyed a standout career at Memphis, piling up 800 points, 310 rebounds and 99 steals as a three-year starter for the Tigers. MSU Peaks in The Valley The Lady Bears are all-time in MVC play with a home record against league foes. Missouri State has won at least a share of 13 regular-season titles and nine conference tournaments since the season. MSU has played in 11 of the 21 Valley tournament championship games and 13 of the 27 title games since the inception of the Gateway Conference Tournament in Missouri State All-Time Missouri State is in its 45th season of women s collegiate basketball and has an alltime record of (.590). MSU began formal competition in 1969 and, with a 24-9 mark in 2012, secured its 29th winning season. The Lady Bears have made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by Final Four trips in 1992 and 2001 to go along with a Sweet 16 appearance in The Lady Bears are in their 32nd NCAA Division I season and 22nd MVC year. MSU was in AIAW competition on the state, regional and national levels through the season, moved to Division I and Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference play in and started MVC competition in when the Gateway merged with The Valley. Fandemonium With the conclusion of their fifth season in JQH Arena, the Lady Bears returned to the top of the MVC standings in terms of attendance, drawing 36,479 fans in 14 home dates in for a 2,606 average. MSU has now led the MVC in attendance 22 times in the past 24 seasons. The Lady Bears outdrew four AP Top 25 teams, as well as regional foes Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma State in per-game attendance. Since the season, Missouri State has ranked in the top 20 nationally in average attendance 19 times, including a string of 10 straight top-10 finishes from 1992 through the season. The Lady Bears led all of Division I women s basketball in attendance during the season by averaging 7,421 fans per contest. Over the last two decades, MSU is fourth among all Division I women s programs in average attendance, trailing only Tennessee, Connecticut and Texas Tech. Additionally, the Lady Bears have finished in the top 50 nationally in per game attendance for 26 straight years. Q Rating After compiling a record in Hammons Student Center over its 32-year stint as home of Missouri State basketball, the Lady Bears posted a 9-5 at home last season to run their five-year record to in JQH Arena. The Q is the fourth regular home of Missouri State women s basketball in the fourdecade history of the program. The Lady Bears utilized both McDonald Arena and the Greenwood Laboratory School gym from 1969 until Hammons Student Center opened in MSU continued to play some of its home games at McDonald through the season. The Lady Bears new home was made possible by a $30 million gift from MSU alumnus John Q. Hammons and features seating for more than 11,000 fans, 24 suites, the PRIME Overtime Club and the Missouri State University Hall of Fame and Legacy of Competition. The first show is Dec. 10 and airs weekly through March 11 with the exception of Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. Lady Bear Basketball Highlights With Kellie Harper, hosted by Ned Reynolds, airs every Saturday at 12 p.m. on KCZ, The Ozarks CW. The show begins Dec. 7 and airs weekly. Lady Bears on the Air For the 29th consecutive year, Missouri State Lady Bear basketball will be broadcast by Meyer Communications, which operates Springfield radio station KTXR (101.3 FM). All games will air live on either KTXR or The Jock 98.7 FM, and can also be heard over the internet at RadioSpringfield.com. Tom Ladd will call the action for Missouri State, and former Lady Bear Dr. Lynne Miller will provide color commentary. Ladd will also host The Kellie Harper Radio Show which will air primarily on The Jock 98.7 FM (KWTO) once a week during the regular season. Missouri State is in its fourth season with KY3, Inc., as its institutional telecast rights holder. A total of nine games are slated to be televised on KYTV (NBC) and KCZ (CW) during the season. The Bears TV Network also includes Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (Kansas City), Charter Communications (St. Louis), KZOU 32 (Columbia) and WRBU My46 (St. Louis) for most of the telecasts. Games not shown on KZOU 32 will air on Mediacom in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota. Long-time KY3 sports director Ned Reynolds will describe the action for all televised games on the Bears TV Network, while Mike Scott provides color commentary. Additionally, at least one regular-season Lady Bear game this season will be broadcast live locally on Fox Sports Midwest as part of the MVC Television Network. Lady Bears Picked Fifth in the MVC The Missouri State Lady Bears of first-year head coach Kellie Harper have been voted to finish fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference women s basketball race by the league s head coaches, media representatives and sports information directors. Indiana State is the preseason favorite with 378 points and 26 first-place votes, while defending champion Wichita State came in second with 360 points and 13 first-place votes. The next six teams in the poll are bunched within 93 points of each other, which is closer than the 101-point gap between WSU and third-place UNI (259). Drake finished fourth in the polling with 221 points, followed by Missouri State (216), Loyola (211), Bradley (194), Illinois State (166), Evansville (104) and Southern Illinois (91). Wichita State s Alex Harden is the Preseason MVC Player of the Year and is joined on the all-conference team by Drake s Kyndal Clark, Loyola s Simone Law, Cartaesha Macklin of Southern Illinois and Indiana State s Anna Munn.
