The Lady Bears are all-time at ISU. Scouting Illinois State Illinois State is 19-8 overall and third in the league at 11-4 in MVC games after knocking off first-place Wichita State Thursday evening. The Redbirds have three players that score at least 13.1 points per game in preseason all-mvc guard Jamie Russell (13.9), Janae Smith (13.4 points, 8.4 rebounds) and Candace Sykes (13.1). As a team, Illinois State scores 67.4 points and allows 61.2 while shooting 40.7 percent overall, 31.2 percent on 3-pointers and 75.2 percent from the free throw line. First Meeting This Season Missouri State beat the Redbirds on Feb. 3 at JQH Arena. The Lady Bears shot 50 percent from the field and placed five scorers in double figures, led by Whitney Edie s 20 points and 13 rebounds. Missouri State out-scored ISU in the paint. Scouting the Lady Bears Missouri State is against a schedule that includes 17 games against postseason teams from a year ago, including five NCAA clubs and the WNIT champion. The Lady Bears score 70.8 points per game, allow 73.9, and shoot 39.8 percent overall, 31.5 percent on 3-pointers and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe. Senior Whitney Edie leads the team with 14.3 points and 8.1 rebounds while notching nine double-doubles. Fellow senior post Christiana Shorter averages 9.4 points on 47 percent shooting with 6.7 rebounds per contest. At the guard spot, Kenzie Williams averages 11.5 points to go with a team-high 77 assists, and Tyonna Snow scores 8.9 points with 66 steals. Quick Hits The Lady Bears rank second in the nation with 718 free throw attempts through March 1, sitting 29 behind leader North Carolina. The Lady Bears and Tar Heels have traded the lead back and forth several times over the past few weeks. Only six teams have shot as many as 650 free throws at this point in the season. The current school records sit at and in each category. Missouri State s 1,243 total rebounds rank sixth nationally through March 1. MSU has three players (Christiana Shorter, Whitney Edie and Tyonna Snow) ranked in the MVC s top 10 in offensive boards, and rebounds 41.6 percent of its misses on the season. Additionally, Missouri State s plus-5.25 rebounding margin leads the MVC, is the team s highest since a plus-5.77 figure in 2001, and marks the third consecutive season the Lady Bears have grabbed at least four more boards per game than the opposition. Missouri State s 68 rebounds Dec. 1 against Northern Kentucky set a Missouri Valley Conference record and broke the 28-year-old school mark. The Lady Bears also grabbed 62 rebounds Dec. 21 at SEMO and 60 Feb. 16 at Drake, the fifth game of 60- plus boards under Milleson after the program had not had one since MSU s victory over Arkansas State Dec. 15 was the 750th in program history, making Missouri State the 28th Division I program to reach that milestone. Missouri State is overall (.651) since the beginning of the season, with a (.698) non-conference record and (.618) mark against MVC competition. The Lady Bears have now posted a winning non-conference record in four consecutive seasons and lead the MVC in victories over the last four years. MSU is 23-6 at home the last two seasons, averaging 77.8 points in those 29 games while topping the 70-point mark 24 times and scoring 80 or more 16 times. After playing the first 90 games of her career without recording a double-double, senior Whitney Edie notched five in a six-game span from Nov. 15-Dec. 1. MSU is 9-0 when Edie records a double-double and 10-0 when she finishes with at least 10 rebounds. Throw in Christiana Shorter s four double-doubles and another from Tyonna Snow, and MSU is 11-1 when a player has at least 10 points and 10 boards, and 12-1 when a player hauls in 10 rebounds in a game. Head Coach Nyla Milleson moved into third place in coaching wins at Missouri State on Dec. 1 and earned her 100th MSU victory on Jan. 19. Only Cheryl Burnett reach 100 victories in fewer games than Milleson s 177. Head Coach Nyla Milleson Nyla Milleson (Kansas State, 85) is in her sixth season as the head coach at Missouri State with a mark as the Lady Bears mentor and an overall record of in her 13th season as a collegiate head coach. She led the Lady Bears back to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference in 2012 with the program s ninth regular season championship and a 24-9 record for the team s third consecutive 20-win season. Milleson already ranks third all-time in coaching victories at MSU, passing Katie Abrahamson-Henderson for the No. 3 spot on Dec. 1 against Northern Kentucky. She earned her 100th win on the MSU sideline Jan. 19 against Drake, reaching the milestone in the second-fewest number of games in program history. Prior to taking the reins of the MSU program, the Goodland, Kan., native guided Drury University to a record in seven seasons, highlighted by a national runner-up finish in In all, the Lady Panthers made five NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, advancing to the Sweet 16 in three of those years. Milleson was honored as Heartland Conference Coach of the Year three times, as Drury won six conference titles in all. Last Time Out The Missouri State Lady Bears held a double-digit lead early in the second half Friday but could not hold off the hard-charging Indiana State Sycamores in a Missouri Valley Conference setback at the Hulman Center. The Lady Bears dropped to overall and 6-10, while the Sycamores held on to fourth place in the league standings at 17-9 and 9-6 in league games. The two teams were within three points of each other for more than 15 minutes of the first half despite each leading by at least five points during the period. The Sycamores jumped ahead 6-0 and the Lady Bears quickly evened the score at 8-8 with a pair of Bry Snow free throws at the 14:52 mark. The Sycamores converted on their final possession for a halftime score. Indiana State closed to just 55 seconds into the second period, but the Lady Bears responded with a 10-0 run over the next two-plus minutes that was punctuated by a Christiana Shorter driving layup for a advantage at the 16:26 mark. Missouri State went cold over the next 11 minutes, netting only five points as the Sycamores turned the tables to lead before Desiree Phillips knocked down a corner trey for a deficit with 5:30 left in regulation. The Lady Bears trailed by exactly two points on four more occasions, the last with 2:15 to play, but never could draw closer before the Sycamores went on a 7-0 run to put the game away. Phillips matched a career high with 10 points for Missouri State and Karly Buer scored 11 while four other Lady Bears tallied at least eight points. ISU freshman Marina Laramie led all scorers with 27 points, including 21 in the second half. Missouri State shot 22-for-55 (.400) overall compared to 26-for-62 (.419) for the Sycamores, and trailed in total rebounds. MSU Peaks in The Valley The Lady Bears are all-time in MVC play with a home record against league foes. Missouri State has won at least a share of 13 regular-season titles and nine conference tournaments since the season. MSU has played in 11 of the 20 Valley tournament championship games and 13 of the 27 title games since the inception of the Gateway Conference Tournament in Missouri State All-Time Missouri State is in its 44th season of women s collegiate basketball and has an alltime record of (.593). MSU began formal competition in 1969 and, with a 24-9 mark in 2012, secured its 29th winning season. The Lady Bears have made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by Final Four trips in 1992 and 2001 to go along with a Sweet 16 appearance in The Lady Bears are in their 31st NCAA Division I season and 21st MVC year. MSU was in AIAW competition on the state, regional and national levels through the season, moved to Division I and Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference play in and started MVC competition in when the Gateway merged with The Valley. Players of the Week Whitney Edie became MSU s first MVC Player of the Week in on Dec. 3 after posting averages of 18.5 points and 14 rebounds in wins over Oral Roberts and Northern Kentucky. Tyonna Snow earned Newcomer of the Week honors Feb. 25 after averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 steals in wins against Southern Illinois and Evansville. Snow set school records for free throws made (18) and attempted (26) against SIU. Q Rating After compiling a record in Hammons Student Center over its 32-year stint as home of Missouri State basketball, the Lady Bears posted a 14-2 home mark last season. The Q is the fourth regular home of Missouri State women s basketball in the fourdecade history of the program. The Lady Bears utilized both McDonald Arena and the Greenwood Laboratory School gym from 1969 until Hammons Student Center opened in MSU continued to play some of its home games at McDonald through the season. The Lady Bears dropped their first game at Hammons to Iowa State by an score on Dec. 11, The Lady Bears new home was made possible by a $30 million gift from MSU alumnus John Q. MSU has now led the MVC in attendance 22 times in the past 23 seasons. The Lady Bears outdrew eight AP Top 25 teams, as well as regional foes Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma State in per-game attendance. Since the season, Missouri State has ranked in the top 20 nationally in average attendance 19 times, including a string of 10 straight top-10 finishes from 1992 through the season. The Lady Bears led all of Division I women s basketball in attendance during the season by averaging 7,421 fans per contest. Over the last two decades, MSU is fourth among all Division I women s programs in average attendance, trailing only Tennessee, Connecticut and Texas Tech. Additionally, the Lady Bears have finished in the top 50 nationally in per game attendance for 25 straight years. Lady Bears on the Air For the 28th consecutive year, Missouri State Lady Bear basketball will be broadcast by Meyer Communications, which operates Springfield radio station KTXR (101.3 FM). All games will air live on either KTXR or The Jock 98.7 FM, and can also be heard over the internet at RadioSpringfield.com. Rob Evans is back for his sixth season calling the action for Missouri State, and former Lady Bear Dr. Lynne Miller will provide color commentary. Evans will also host The Nyla Milleson Radio Show which will air primarily on The Jock 98.7 FM (KWTO) once a week during the regular season. Missouri State is in the third of a four-year television agreement with KY3, Inc., the parent company of local broadcast stations KYTV and Ozarks CW (KCZ), as part of the two-tier television rights package negotiated by the University s marketing partner, Nelligan Sports Marketing (NSM). The agreement includes eight women s games per season. Each contest will be carried live over the air, on cable, and on satellite carriers Dish Network and Direct TV within the KY3 and Ozarks CW footprints, which cover 31 counties in two states. Network affiliates already secured include Metro Sports in Kansas City and Charter Communications in St. Louis. Additionally, at least one regular-season Lady Bear game this season will be broadcast live locally on Fox Sports Midwest as part of the MVC Television Network. Lady Bears Picked Fifth in the MVC Following its ninth Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship in , Missouri State s women s basketball team has been voted to finish fifth in the MVC race by the league s head coaches, media representatives and sports information directors. Additionally, senior forward Christiana Shorter was selected to the preseason All-MVC team. Missouri State has backed up its previous eight MVC championships with an average finish of 2.13 the next season and four repeats.
