Brittany Webb found Ellis open underneath for a basket at the 14:45 mark. Hall then connected from the left wing a minute later. The Red Wolves battled back and cut the deficit to two (15-13) on a jumper in the lane by Jasmine Hunt with less than 10 to go, but on the Jaguars next possession, Rachel Cumbo drained a trey from the left corner and was fouled on the play for a four-point play. Holding a advantage with under seven minutes remaining in the opening period of play, Ellis sparked the Jags again as the freshman post player recorded two more buckets to ignite an 8-0 spurt. Grace Farnsworth s jumper just inside the arc along the left side at the 4:21 mark gave South Alabama its first double-digit lead of the night at Gamble cut the ASU deficit to seven (29-22) with a floater along the left baseline with three minutes, 19 seconds remaining in the half, but Ellis again had the answer as she helped extend the USA advantage back out to with a bucket at the 1:28 mark. The Red Wolves came out of the intermission and quickly cut into South Alabama s lead, opening the half on a 7-0 run and trimming the deficit to after a Ruffins bucket at the 17:22 mark. Hall finally knocked down USA s first basket of the second half when the senior connected just inside the arc as the shot clock was winding down five-and-a-half minutes into the period to put South Alabama up With less than 12 minutes to go in the game, ASU took advantage of USA s offensive struggles as the Red Wolves erupted for a 17-0 run to retake the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the first half. Despite the offensive struggles, the Jaguars kept battling and cut the deficit to single digits at with under a minute to play after another three-pointer by Hall, but that would be as close as USA would get as the Red Wolves went on to pick up the 12-point victory. USA s best record came back during the season when the Jags were 14-2 at the Mitchell Center. South Alabama has posted 10 or more wins at the arena eight times. ROAD WOES Over the last two-plus seasons, wins have not come often for South Alabama away from the Mitchell Center. With the loss at Georgia State (2/19), the Jaguars recorded their 18th-straight road games dating back to last season which was the second-longest streak in program history and was their 26th loss in their last 27 games away from the Mitchell Center dating back to the end of the season. USA had also lost 14-straight Sun Belt road contests second longest streak in that category in program history prior to its win at Georgia Southern (2/21). JAGUARS SNAP LOSING STREAK AND SUN BELT SKID With its 10-point win over Louisiana-Lafayette (1/29), South Alabama snapped its 13-game skid and picked up its first conference win of the season. Prior to the win over ULL, USA had been 0-9 in SBC action. The win was the first league victory since a win versus Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 1, South Alabama is 3-24 in its last 27 Sun Belt games. DANIEL S RECORD-SETTING NIGHT Freshman guard Marquita Daniels had a record-setting night against Georgia State (2/7) as she was 13-of-18 from the field and 8-of-12 at the foul line for a career-best 37 points. The 37 points eclipsed the previous Mitchell Center record by a Jaguar player of 32 points recorded by Lyletha Gamble versus New Mexico State back on Jan. 1, 2002 in a triple overtime win over the Aggies. It was also the first time a USA player has had 35 or more points in a game since Adrian Vickers (35) versus Temple on Feb. 24, PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATION The South Alabama women were picked to finish seventh by the 11 league coaches in the preseason poll released back on Oct. 22. The Jaguars are 5-14 (.263) in overtime Sun Belt Conference games all time. The Jags have needed three overtime sessions three times, marking those the longest games in the program s history. The last triple overtime came in USA s season-opener versus Central Florida - a victory. Over the last 11 years, South Alabama holds a 8-12 record. Last season USA was 2-1 in the extra session. Both overtime wins came versus Texas-Arlington, including a decision in the season finale in Mobile. ON THE TUBE South Alabama s game at Georgia Southern (2/21) on ESPN3 was the only game for the Jags scheduled to be aired this season. The Jaguars scored a season-high 80 points and picked up an win over the Eagles. South Alabama has been on either national or regional television 27 times in its 41-year history. USA s all-time record on the tube is TURNOVER TRENDS One of the key stats that the Jaguars were looking to turnaround from a year ago as they entered the campaign was in the turnover department. So far this season, turnovers have continued to be an issue as the Jags are averaging 20.4 per outing. USA posted a season-high 31 turnovers in its loss at Ole Miss (12/14) and at Troy (2/12). In its wins, South Alabama has averaged 19.0 turnovers per game, while in its losses, the Jaguars have averaged USA has turned the ball over 20 or more times in 13 of its 27 games. The Jags are 2-11 in those games. Last season, South Alabama was also 6-8 in three-possession games. In those eight losses, USA averaged 21 turnovers, while in those six wins, the Jags averaged 14 turnovers. USA s HALL EARNS WEEKLY HONOR After missing one game due to injury, senior guard Breanna Hall made a dramatic return to the Jaguar lineup versus Alabama State (11/23). Versus the Hornets, Hall recorded 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-8 from the arc, but probably her most important two shot attempts came with 5.7 seconds remaining. After being fouled, Hall broke a tie as she sank both attempts. For her play, she was named the CollegeSportsMadness.com s Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 24. ELLIS SETS FRESHMAN SINGLE-SEASON BLOCKS MARK Freshman center Chyna Ellis has also made her mark defensively in the paint and against Louisiana- Monroe (2/26), the Cordova, Tenn., native made a bit of history as she became USA s freshman blocks leader. Ellis who had a career-high six blocks versus the Warhawks tied the record with her block at the 11:22 mark of the first half and then passed former Jag LaSandra Jenkins ( ) with her second block of the contest at the 6:45 mark. She has 51 blocks on the year which is seventh-most overall for a season at USA.
