1 DARTMOUTH MEN'S BASKETBALL (9-16 Overall, 2-10 Ivy) at Brown, Friday, March 1, 2002, 7:30 p.m. at Yale, Saturday, March 2, 2002, 7 p.m. DARTMOUTH COACH DAVE FAUCHER: Once again, we find ourselves in the position of picking ourselves up off the mat after a disappointing weekend. We ve bounced back in the past, and we plan on doing it again. The Brown game is on TV and Yale is playing for a championship, so that provides added incentive for us as well. Senior Flinder Boyd made history in Leede Arena last weekend, but it wasn t enough to carry Dartmouth to victory. The Big Green has lost four in a row, falling to Columbia, 62-58, and Cornell, In the Columbia game which featured 14 lead changes, Dartmouth held a lead on a Boyd layin with 2:41 to go. But the Big Green suffered two critical turnovers down the stretch, and the Lions Craig Austin scored the final five points for the win. Boyd had a double-double with 21 points and a season-high 10 assists. Dartmouth had a chance in the final 10 seconds, but Steve Callahan s off-balance jumper was blocked. Also in double figures for the Big Green were freshman Mike McLaren with 14 points and senior Vedad Osmanovic with 13. In the Cornell game, the Big Red came out of the gates red hot, making six of seven 3-pointers for a 20-0 lead with 6:33 elapsed. Dartmouth missed its first 10 shots and by halftime, was only 4-of-21 for 19 percent. In the second half, the Big Green got as close as with 6:29 to go on a Mike McLaren trey. Boyd s first 3-pointer of the night, coming with 11:25 on the clock in the first half, gave him 1,000 for his career. He finished with a team-high 16 points. Boyd is the first Dartmouth player to reach 1000 points and 500 assists in his career. He s only the fourth Ivy Leaguer, joining Mike Waitkus of Brown, Tim Hill of Harvard and Jerome Allen of Penn. In addition, Boyd has 579 assists, third all-time in the Ancient Eight. He needs 12 this weekend to move ahead of Hill (590). The all-time leader is Yale s Peter White who racked up 611 from Boyd continues to lead Dartmouth in scoring with 15.0 ppg and remains above.500 from the floor, going for 52.5 percent. In second place is junior Charles Harris with 11.0 ppg. In the rebounding category, sophomore Brendan Herbert is tops with 4.8, but the center has missed the last four games because of a recurring back injury. Harris is second with 4.2. Because of the uniqueness of the Dartmouth athletic calendar, the team will have its annual banquet on Sunday, March 3, at 5 p.m. Final exams for the winter term begin Saturday, March 9. 2 THE COACH Dave Faucher was named the 25th coach of Dartmouth men's basketball in June, Faucher, 53, graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1972 and began his coaching career as an assistant for the Wildcats. Against Brown, he is 16-5; against Yale, His record entering tonight s game is Previously, he served as Dartmouth's first assistant from Faucher's experience includes working as an assistant at Merrimack and head coaching positions at Sanborn (N.H.) High and Newmarket (N.H.) High. Two years ago, Faucher moved into third place in coaching victories for the Big Green, surpassing Dolly Stark who had 101. Ozzie Cowles is second with 144 (from ) and Doggie Julian is first with 183 ( ). HOW HIGH CAN YOU GO? When Mike McLaren buried a 3-pointer at the 8:24 mark of the Penn game on February 16, that helped Dartmouth break the school record for 3-pointers made in a season. Last year, the Big Green connected on 218. Going into the Brown-Yale weekend, Dartmouth has 245 beyond the arc. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior Flinder Boyd was named Ivy League player of the week after leading Dartmouth to a pair of road victories on February 8-9 at Cornell and Columbia. AT THE LOBO INVITATIONAL The Big Green picked up its first victory in four trips to the Lobo Invitational, defeating Southeastern Louisiana, 62-59, in the opening round. 2001, 1st Round: Dartmouth 62, SE Louisiana 59. Flinder Boyd and Charles Harris were named to the 2001 All- Tournament team. FOOD DRIVE Dartmouth s fourth annual food drive took place on January 22, when Hartford came to Leede Arena. Big Green fans donated nearly 400 lbs. of food that freshmen David Gardner, Michael Liddy and Steve Callahan delivered to the Upper Valley Haven the following day. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Freshman Mike McLaren was honored as Ivy League rookie of the week after two strong games against Holy Cross on November 27 and Lehigh on November 30. McLaren had 14 points, two rebounds and two steals against the Crusaders, and then contributed 13 points, five rebounds and two steals in the win over the Mountain Hawks. In the Lehigh game, he nailed a crucial trey with 44 seconds left to put the game on ice. In the two games, McLaren was eight-of-13 beyond the arc. A LITTLE SEASONING Now in his fourth season, senior Flinder Boyd has 579 assists, and he became Dartmouth s all-time leader in the Lehigh game on November 30. Boyd surpassed Bryan Randall 88 who had 488 from As a freshman with his left hand in a cast, Boyd dished off 151 times (sixth most in a single season) and his sophomore year, he earned 181, the second most behind Mitchell with 203. Mitchell led the entire nation in , averaging 7.8 per contest. CLASSIFIED Dartmouth's 13-man squad by class: 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 3 sophomores and 6 freshmen. THE ONLY ONE The 5-11 Boyd, a four-year starter at point guard for the Big Green, is the only player in Dartmouth history to average more than five assists per game. He is averaging 5.67 per game in a total of 102 contests.

YES, HE CAN! Boyd s 3-pointer at the 11:25 mark of the February 23 Cornell game gave him 1000 in his career. Boyd is the first Dartmouth player and only the fourth Ivy Leaguer to record 500 assists/1000 points in his collegiate career. Tim Hill of Harvard (590 assists/1385 points), Mike Waitkus of Brown (577 assists/1165 points) and Jerome Allen of Penn (505 assists/1518) are the three. AMERICAN PIE Vedad Osmanovic, from Banja Luka, Bosnia, missed practice on Tuesday, January 16, 2001 and that was okay with coach Dave Faucher. The 6-5 forward had to be in Brooklyn, N.Y. at 8 a.m. to be sworn in as an American citizen. On December 12 on Long Island, he completed his interview, and got back to Hanover just 30 minutes before the tip-off of the Haverford game. ON TELEVISION On Thanksgiving at 7:30 p.m., senior Vedad Osmanovic was featured as part of Chronicle on WMUR- TV, Channel 9, in Manchester, N.H. Osmanovic spoke with Sports Anchor Jamie Staton. WMUR can be seen on cable systems throughout New Hampshire as well as in parts of Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. A native of war-torn Bosnia and a newly-sworn in American citizen, Osmanovic shared his views and perspective about the September 11 terrorist attacks. RAINING THREES In games played through February 24, Dartmouth is second in the nation in the highest percentage of 3-pointers, according to STATS, Inc. The Big Green has attempted 1248 shots, and 623 of them are beyond the arc for 49.9 percent. Leading the way is Samford (53.1). According to the ESPN stats through February 24, Dartmouth is second nationally in the number of 3-point baskets made per game (9.8). St. Bonaventure is first with RECORD-SETTER Flinder Boyd improved his own single game assist record when he dished off 16 times against Albany on January 20, He held the previous mark with a 15-assist performance against Holy Cross as a sophomore. Prior to that, 13 was the all-time best at Dartmouth set by Gregg Frame 94 against Yale in and matched by Kenny Mitchell 97 at Toledo in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Before he set foot on campus, senior Vedad Osmanovic was featured in the August 10, 1998 issue of Sports Illustrated in a story called American Dream. A Bosnian Muslim, Vedad left his homeland for Croatia in 1993 before reuniting with his parents in New York in The story details his childhood in the war-torn country and his career at Dwight School under playground legend Pee Wee Kirkland. Vedad s incredible work ethic (ironically under a Bosnian Serb named Radomir Kovacevic who is Dwight s head of athletics) is also described. HOME SWEET HOME Did you know that Dartmouth men s basketball has a respectable record of at home in Leede Arena? That s a winning percentage of Formally dedicated on May 22, 1987, the Leede court was inaugurated 13 years ago on Jan. 9, 1988 with a men s/women s doubleheader vs. Harvard. This is the Big Green s 15th season in Leede.

4 LONG DISTANCE INFORMATION, CALLING MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE Dartmouth s starting lineup features two players from the same hometown, but they haven t seen Elvis yet. Junior Charles Harris played at White Station HS in Memphis, while freshman Mike McLaren was a standout at Memphis University School. The starting lineup is rounded out by a player from Los Angeles (Flinder Boyd) and another from Bosnia (Vedad Osmanovic). The center position has been manned by three different players (Brendan Herbert - New Hampshire, David Gardner - Minnesota and Scott Klingbeil - Ohio). ALUMNI CONNECTIONS Two members of the freshman class have connections to former Dartmouth men s basketball players. Stan Kowalewski 94, a four-year letterwinner for the Big Green, was Brandon Smith s AAU coach for three years. And Mike McLaren comes from the same high school program that produced Jim Barton 89, Dartmouth s all-time leading scorer with 2,158 points. Both graduated from Memphis University School. McLaren has an Ivy League connection, too, as his father, Mike, was a three-year letterwinner at Yale, graduating in SEEING DOUBLE Flinder Boyd has a twin sister, Ela. She is a photography major at California College of Arts and Crafts and is 18 minutes older than Flinder. The two don t look anything alike Ela has red hair, blue eyes and freckles. While Flinder went to school at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, Ela went to Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Flinder readily admits that he s not artistic, while Ela isn t really an athlete, although she did run a little bit of cross country in high school. The two stay in touch via . MARATHON MAN Coach Dave Faucher has competed in 15 marathons, including Boston. His best time is 2:36 which he has posted in 8 of the 15 races. At the Burlington (Vt.) City Marathon, he won his age-group in 1989, 1990 and 1991 and held his age-group course record until it was broken in But his new passion is golf. A rank beginner three years ago, he has broken 90 on several occasions and established a handicap index of 13.3 in four seasons of practice. In August, 1999, he won the Hanover Country Club centennial tournament, a mixed best-ball event, with sports information director Kathy Slattery. BEAR HUG The victory over the University of New Hampshire on November 24 held special meaning for two members of the Dartmouth squad. After the customary hand shakes post-game, junior Greg Friel, at 6-5, put a big bear hug on head coach Dave Faucher, at 5-6, at midcourt. Friel lives in Durham, where UNH is, and played at nearby Oyster River HS. He s no stranger to Lundholm Gym as he competed in many state playoff games there. His father, Gerry, who coached New Hampshire for 20 years, gave Faucher his start in the coaching profession. In addition, sophomore Brendan Herbert is another Granite Stater, growing up in Nashua. LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON Dartmouth fans sure hope that Mike McLaren, a Big Green starter, can enjoy as impressive a career as his father, Mike. The elder was a three-year letterwinner on the court at Yale, graduating in 1972 after scoring 889 career points and averaging 12.3 ppg. For the freshman team during the season, father Mike scored 299 points. An attorney, he is also an accomplished actor, having appeared in several productions, including The Firm. SERIES STANDING Dartmouth vs. Brown The Bears have won four of the last five games. The Big Green leads the series, 70-54, and the two schools first played on February 1, 1902, when Dartmouth won, The Big Green s last win in the Pizzitola Center was February 27, 1999 by a score. Four of the last six games have been decided by eight or fewer points, including two by 3-point margins. Dartmouth vs. Yale Dartmouth leads the series, 92-87, but Yale was won three straight and four of the last five. The two schools first played February 9, 1901, when the Big Green won, Dartmouth has lost two straight games in Payne Whitney Gym. The last victory there was February 26, 1999 by a score of
