Effner has mentored 35 NCAA qualifiers and five Eastern Wrestling League champions during his tenure at CSU. In addition, he helped three grapplers earn a spot at the NCAA Championship. Effner's most successful season at the helm of the Vikings came in , when CSU went 13-6 in dual matches, the most wins since the Vikings won 15, and sent a school record-tying six wrestlers to the NCAA tournament. The 2000 edition of the Vikings posted the school's highest academic ranking, placing seventh out of nearly 100 schools across the nation. Effner came to Cleveland State in 1998 after serving as the head coach at Army for nine years. While at West Point, Effner compiled an record and never had a losing season. He led 17 Cadets to the NCAA tournament and his 87 dual meet wins are still the third-highest in the U.S. Military Academy's history. Effner's best season at Army came in , when he led the Cadets to a mark and a third-place finish in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. Army would have three more seasons with 11 wins or more during Effner's tenure, including two seasons (91-92 and 93-94) in which he led the Cadets to a dozen wins. Before being named Army's head coach, Effner was an assistant coach at Army during the season, and was an assistant coach at Clemson from January 1987 to November Effner enjoyed a stellar wrestling career at Indiana State, capturing All-America honors twice and advancing to the NCAA Tournament three times at 142 pounds. He placed fifth in the nation as a senior in 1986 and sixth as a junior. His 128 victories stand third on the school's all-time list. Effner won a state championship in high school at 132 pounds in 1982 to cap off a perfect 35-0 season while at South Vigo in Terre Haute, Ind. Effner earned a bachelor's degree in industrial education from Indiana State in 1986 and he holds two master's degrees. 3 Viking Wrestling Assistant Coaches Anthony Coleman Assistant Coach First Year Former CSU wrestler Anthony Coleman enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Vikings after spending last season as a graduate assistant coach. Prior to arriving at CSU, Coleman spent two years accumulating coaching experience at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. As an assistant coach at Limestone during the season at Limestone, Coleman signed 15 student athletes and designed the "Mat Talk" seasonal newsletter which is still being used by the program today. He then joined the Viking coaching staff as a graduate assistant last season and was successful in signing 12 student athletes and developed a Sports Psychology Training Manual for Wresting. Coleman, who won 87 matches during his Viking career, was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 149 pounds as a junior in 2003, and at 141 pounds his senior year. He won 49 matches in those two seasons and scored one victory at the 2004 NCAA Championship. In addition, he earned CSU's Most Outstanding Wrestler Award as a redshirt freshman in Coleman won an Ohio state championship at Bellevue in 1999 and placed eighth at the high school nationals. He received a bachelor's degree in communication from Cleveland State in 2004 and is currently pursuing his master's in sports management at CSU. Chris Steadman Graduate Assistant Coach Stevan Mladenovic Assistant Coach Jason Effner Director of Wrestling Operations Julie Brough Assistant Athletic Trainer First Year First Year Third Year Second Year Chris Steadman is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. Steadman started and wrestled in the EWL Championships ( ) before graduating from Cleveland State with a teaching degree. Stevan Mladenovic is in his first season as an assistant coach on the Cleveland State wrestling staff. A two-time University National runner-up (1990, 1992), a four-time Yugoslavian national champion and a Junior World Silver Medalist in 1985, Mladenovic will be a huge asset to the coaching staff. He wrestled for 10 years for the Proleter European Club and placed first at 185 pounds for two years before moving to the United States. Mladenovic also wrestled for two years at Cuyahoga Community College ( ) before graduating with an Associate of Science and working toward an International Business degree at CSU. His coaching experience was gained as the assistant coach at Brecksville and as assistant coach of the National Junior Team Ohio 2006 and 2007 in Greco Roman style. Jason Effner is in his third year on the wrestling coaching staff and his second as Director of Wrestling Operations. Effner was a four-year starter at CSU from , posting 64 wins at 157 and 165 pounds. He served as team captain as a senior and placed fourth in the EWL Tournament at 157, his highest finish at the league meet, and was named an NCAA alternate. 4 Outlook Viking Wrestling Cleveland State takes great pride in consistently competing on a national stage. Every year since 1965, at least one member of the Viking wrestling squad has advanced to the NCAA Championship. The tradition of excellence on the national level has continued with head coach Jack Effner at the head of the program, as the Vikings have sent 35 athletes to the national tournament during his nine years at CSU. Cleveland State returns two of its three NCAA qualifiers form a season ago, highlighted by three-time qualifier Ryan Hurley, as well as 285-pound competitor Rashard Goff, who has been to nationals two consecutive seasons. Mike Hurley and Marcus Effner have both been to nationals, but fell short last year, and will be working quite dilligently to return to the NCAA Championship this season. Following is a breakdown by weight class of how the Vikings will stack up this season. 125 RETURNING STARTER Ryan Riggs - Sr Record: KEY NEWCOMER Matt Reynolds - Fr. The presence of Matt Reynolds in the 125- pound class gives the Vikings a great one-two punch in the weight class, as both Reynolds and senior Ryan Riggs bring a great deal of talent to bear. After going 4-2 in EWL matches last season, Riggs has proven to be a solid competitor. Coach Effner looks forward to being able to alternate Riggs and Reynolds throughout the season, and predicts that the two will push each other considerably throughout the season. Reynolds won 95 matches at Marion Pleasant H.S., including a third place finish in the state as a senior and fourt place as a junior. 133 PROJECTED STARTER Josh Palivoda - Fr. KEY RETURNER David Armstrong Record: KEY NEWCOMER Matt Waxman - So. Going into the season will be difficult without the benefit of being able to plug a Senior Ryan Riggs is slated to receive a majority of action at 125 pounds after winning 12 matches last season. former NCAA qualifier like David Armstrong into the lineup, as he will be sitting out the season. Fortunately, this problem will be lessened considerably with the presence of top recruit Josh Palivoda. Palivoda was a high school state champion in Ohio at Marysville H.S. last year, and will be not be alone in his quest for mat time with the Vikings as transfer Matt Waxman will be working hard to get back to speed after transferring from Ohio. 141 RETURNING STARTER Mike Hurley - Sr Record: KEY RETURNERS Antonio Nicholson - Jr Record: 3-3 KEY NEWCOMERS Lawrence Cavello - Fr. TJ Chapplear - Fr. Senior Mike Hurley has been slowed by injuries throughout his career, but may be coming back into his own this year. He was close to earning a berth at nationals last season and will be fighting hard to make it back this year. A fierce competitor whose unorthodox style makes him a fan favorite, Hurley won 20 matches last season and was an NCAA qualifier as a sophomore. Antonio NIcholson is just about the opposite of Hurley in that he is very technical and disciplined. He has tremendous talent and will battle Hurley for the starting position, while Lawrence Cavello and TJ Chapplear will most likely redshirt this season. 149 RETURNING STARTER Ryan Hurley - Sr Record: * NCAA Qualifier * KEY RETURNERS Shaun Mitchell - So Record: 3-12 Dan Castillo - So Record: 1-4 KEY NEWCOMERS Thomas Schwartz - Fr. Tyler Young - Fr. William McCollie - Fr. Tim Vleck - Fr. Mike McLaughlin - Fr. Senior Ryan Hurley, who won a team-best 28 matches last season en route to the NCAA Championship for the third straight season, returns as the projected starter at CSU s deepest weight class. Hurley has just about done it all as a Viking, short of achieving All-America status as he was able to in high school. Shaun Mitchell and Dan Castillo are similar and solid wrestlers who will provide good depth at multiple weight classes throughout the season, in addition to pushing Hurley in practice. A slew of newcomers round out a packed 149 pound class as Thomas Schwartz, Tyler Young, William McCollie, Mike McLaughlin, and Tim Vleck will all most likely redshirt. 157 PROJECTED STARTER Robbie Michaels - Fr. KEY NEWCOMERS Dustin Doty - Fr. KEY LOSS Victer Crenshaw Record: *NCAA Qualifier* Replacing an NCAA qualifer such as Victer Crenshaw is definitely a difficult task. Fortunately for the Vikings, redshirt freshman Robbie Michaels just may be poised for a break out year, after going 9-3 competing only in 4

5 Viking Wrestling Outlook open meets as an unattached athlete last season. A state runner up at Clyde H.S., Michaels holds records at his high school for career wins (181) and winning percentage (.942). Freshman Dustin Doty is redshirt candidate who will certainly help the team in practice, after placing second in the sectional championshio and third at the city championship as a senior at Toledo Start H.S. 165 RETURNING STARTER Marcus Effner - Jr Record: KEY RETURNERS Nate Kmetz - Jr Record: 4-22 Junior Marcus Effner is back and poised to succeed in his bid to make it back to the NCAA Championship after falling short last season. A wiry, unorthodox type of wrestler, Effner posted a mark last season, including a 5-1 mark in EWL competition. Junior Nate Kmetz has been thrust into many different weight classes throughout his Viking career, and this utility man has done well in everything that has been asked of him throughout. Kmetz may have only won four matches last season as he wrestled up at 174 pounds, but he continued to overachieve and was competitive in nearly all of his matches. Kmetz will battle Effner at practice and the two will continue to make each other better wrestlers. 174 PROJECTED STARTER JT Miller - Jr. KEY NEWCOMERS Caleb Kennedy - Fr. Gered Tolson - Jr. JT Miller, who is n his fourth year with the Vikings, has paid his dues wrestling at multiple weight classes in the past. He should not disappoint given this chance to start at 174 pounds this year after taking last season to redshirt. Freshman Caleb Kennedy has a lot to learn but will battle for a spot in the Viking lineup this season, while transfer Gerred Tolson is a likely redshirt. Kennedy won 101 matches in his high school career and placed second in the state as a senior, while Tolson helped lead Padua to four league championships during his tenure as a Bruin. He also placed second in the state as a senior. 184 RETURNING STARTER Chris Hahn - Jr Record 15-7 KEY RETURNERS Benny Balogh - So Record: 7-11 KEY NEWCOMERS Derek Cummins - Fr. KEY LOSS David Gilkey Record: Junior Chris Hahn enters the season as the front-runner for the starting nod at 184- pounds. His potential is great, as evidenced by his near miss in a bid to make it to nationals last season, coupled with a strong finish to the year after securing a starting spot on the team. Challenging Hahn for the starting spot at 184 will be sophomore Benny Balogh and freshman Derek Cummins. Balogh is short and stocky, using his frame and low center of gravity to his advantage, as he is hard to score on. He went 7-11 last season. Cummins has already made an impression on his teammates during the preseason, garnering the nickame The Bear due to his relentless nature. Cummins will push both Hahn and Balogh for a position on the mat after tallying a career record at Lincoln H.S. and placing eighth in the state as a senior. 197 PROJECTED STARTER Alek Hughes - Fr. Freshman Alek Hughes will have to be a quick learner to the ways of collegiate wrestling as the only option at 197 pounds for CSU this season. A state runner-up in high school, Hughes is a dangerous opponent who forces his opponents to go hard the whole round, and physically breaks down those opponents who are unable to do so. Hughes went a combined at Seneca East H.S., including a 45-3 mark as a senior. 285 RETURNING STARTER Rashard Goff - Jr Record: * NCAA Qualifier * KEY RETURNER Jeff Schuller - Jr Record: 3-3 KEY NEWCOMERS Eric Schwartz - Fr. Junior and two-time NCAA qualifier Rashard Goff highlights a position of strength for the Vikings. Goff has been one of CSU s top grapplers over the last two seasons, going during that time with eight pins. He was third at the EWL Championships last season after a second place showing his freshman year. Jeff Schuller will provide good depth at the heavyweight position. However, there is always the chance that he could be called to serve the country once more, as he has put his wrestling career on hold in the past to serve tours of duty overseas while at CSU. At 270 pounds, Eric Schwartz is bigger than many at the 285 pound class, but he brings a unique blend of speed and agility that makes him a tough competitor. He helped Clyde H.S. to a third place finish at the state tournament lby finishing third as a senior. The league has brought together several traditional powerhouse programs in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and has expanded through the years to include some of the biggest names in collegiate wrestling. The league was formed before the season with Bloomsburg, Buffalo, Clarion, Lock Haven, Penn State and Pittsburgh as charter members. Two years later, Cleveland State and West Virginia brought the total number of schools to eight before Buffalo s departure later that year. Millersville was added in , but withdrew from the league after the season. Penn State would later leave the league when the rest of its programs joined the Big Ten, but the addition of Edinboro has kept the league stable at seven teams. Upon entering the league, Cleveland State immediately proved it belonged by finishing second in the EWL tournament in its first season. The next season, the Vikings claimed both the dual meet and tournament championships, the only time in school history CSU has completed the sweep Eastern Wrestling League Final Standings EWL Overall Team W L T W L T Edinboro Bloomsburg West Virginia Cleveland State Lock Haven Pittsburgh Clarion Cleveland State has crowned 24 Eastern Wrestling League champions, including at least one in each of its first four seasons in the league.
