High school was nicknamed Whirlies, short for Whirlwinds, with a tornado logo. Career Nicole HARGRAVES The athletic post player transferred to Georgia State after Coach Baldwin-Tener arrived in 2010 Played in 30 games in Atlantic-10 for two seasons at UNC Charlotte Sat out her transfer year to become eligible at Georgia State, but practiced with the team to gain experience with the team. Began her studies in the classroom at GSU full-time as well. Previous College Played in 30 games in two seasons with 49ers of Charlotte. As freshman, played in 19 games with 10 points and 18 rebounds, plus two blocks. Sophomore year included 11 games played with nine points and eight rebounds on team. The 49ers earned a WNIT postseason bid, opening with a win over Big South champion Gardner-Webb, before bowing to 23-win North Carolina A&T in the second round. Freshman team was 23-9 and earned NCAA bid, but lost to Purdue. The 49ers defeated Dayton to win the championship in the A-10 Tournament and claim the automatic bid to the NCAA. She played with the AAU Lady Phoenix Elite team in the Delaney Rudd North Carolina Basketball Academy. Alana Brittany Beroth is the daughter of Rick and Melanie Beroth and was born on April 3, A middle child, Alana has an older sister, Brooke, and a younger brother, Ben. 17 BRITTANY JOHNSON # 41 Brittany Johnson Johnson poured in 1,230 points and made 174 three-point baskets in her career at Fort Wayne, Ind., South Side High. The southpaw was a two-time all-conference first team pick, after having been a second-team pick as a sophomore. A two-year team captain and National Honor Society student, Brittany was certainly a leader on the court and in the classrooms. She had a 3.9 cume GPA for high school. The Archers of South Side were quite formidable during Johnson s years, posting 20-win seasons in every year and played in the state postseason tournaments. Often, Johnson was leading the point parade like the 25-point night in a holiday tournament or the 20-point game in the state semifinals against South Bend Washington. Johnson scored 21 points the night in regular season that South Side played South Bend Washington and Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame). There were multiple double-double games as she could fight to get rebounds as well. A deft outside shooter, she made a personal-best six three-point baskets in a game several times, including against rival high Snider...And with her high school coach Juanita Goodwell stressing defense, there were plenty of steals, including a six-theft game. Johnson shot 31.5 percent outside the arc for her career with top seasons of 52, 45 and 44 made. But, not just a stand and shoot player, she got herself to the free throw line often, shooting 441 free throws in her career. Her final prep totals included 336 rebounds, 290 assists and 281 steals. She played AAU ball with the Lady Legit team of Coach Juan Gorman and the Indiana Family team. Johnson was picked for the Indiana All- Star Classic. Playing against top competition throughout the summers, her teams traveled to tournaments in Florida, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and in Las Vegas, Nev. John s shooting skills drew plenty of notice by college recruiters. Brittany took visits to Western Michigan, IUPUI and Xavier amidst all the letters and calls she had received. GSU assistant coaches Jonathan Barbaree and Jocelyn Wyatt visited last summer and had watched her and kept up with her during her high school career. PERSONAL Brittany Charmaine Johnson was born July 6, 1992, in Fort Wayne to Dawn and Vernon Johnson. Johnson becomes the second member of her family to play basketball at GSU, as her older brother Marques played for the GSU men s team the past two years. Older brother Marques let her play in some games with the guys and taught her lots of fundamentals of basketball. Brittany s mother, Dawn, played two years of college volleyball. Between her family and her coaches, Brittany s overall game improved. I think I learned to work harder and do the extra stuff when I don t really want to, she said. I work Marques played for GSU the past two seasons and is working on his master s degree now, while Brittany begins this year with GSU basketball. hard now on defense, too, and I do extra ball-handling drills to get better in that area, too. 18 KAYLA NOLAN # 20 Nolan was an All-Gwinnett County second team honoree in a second sport, volleyball, as an outside hitter. She earned two varsity letters in a third sport, track and field, running the 100 and 200 meters, while also being a long jumper and a triple jumper. Off the court, Kayla was an Academic Scholar honoree her final three years. Nolan is a metro Atlanta product, starring her final two seasons at Duluth High north of downtown. Kayla began at Norcross High, just a few miles from Duluth, her freshman and sophomore seasons before moving. Kayla had received recruited interest from Stetson, Charlotte, UAB and Jacksonville before choosing Georgia State. She took her official visits to Charlotte of the A-10 and Jacksonville of the A-Sun...Ultimately, she liked the GSU coaches and players, as well as the chance to play at home in Atlanta for her family and friends to cheer her on. PERSONAL A double-figure scorer, Nolan was Georgia All- State second team and All-Region first team. She is a good penetrator to the basket, but also averaged four assists a game. Her Wildcats team of Coach Chad Pittman advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and Kayla had a 22-point game in the Region Playoffs vs. Norcross. Kayla also had a 25-point game vs. rival Northview. Kayla Kathleen Nolan was born Sept. 24, 1993 in Milwaukee, Wisc. and moved to the Atlanta area when she was in the fifth grade. Her mother, Michele Singleton is a nurse, along with just about every female relative she has, Kayla notes...kayla has a younger sister, Jasmine, 11. She was also an Academic Scholar and in the National Honor Society at Duluth HS. Kayla has set a goal of graduating from GSU with a 3.2 GPA and then working to earn a master s degree. 19 MIRANDA SMITH # 2 Smith scored 1,169 points in her fouryear prep career in Virginia at Patrick Henry and Franklin County High Schools in the state that five Colonial Athletic Association teams call home. Miranda Smith The combo wing/guard averaged 13.6 points for her career, with 7.2 rebounds a game over her four years (619 rebounds). The 5-9 Smith made 153 assists and blocked 126 shots. She also averaged two steals a game. Miranda was a two-time All-Western Valley District honoree, an All-Region first team pick and an All-State honorable mention choice. In addition, Miranda played AAU ball with the Roanoke Lady Hawks on a team that was the state of Virginia runner-ups. ESPN s recruiting services said that Smith uses her collegelevel strength and size and plays with energy and aggression. She was rated one of the top 40 wing players in the country by one recruiting service. During her high school career, Smith received recruiting early interest from George Washington University, East Carolina University and Norfolk State. Later, she began being scouted and recruited by a pair of ACC schools, but stayed true to her commitment to Georgia State. PERSONAL Miranda Brinae Smith was born April 11, 1993 in Roanoke, Va. to Anthony and Rhonda Smith. She has a younger sister, Lauryn, 11. Miranda s family tree on her mother s side includes Dwaine Pee Wee Board, an NFL player for 10 years and an NFL assistant coach for 20 more years. Pee Wee was a defensive end and has been with teams that have played in six Super Bowls, winning five of those. Miranda s fun time finds her accepting the challenges of video games...smith will begin studies as a health and exercise science major at Georgia State. Smith had a 25-point, 17-rebound game vs. Franklin County as a senior for Coach Toree Dunleavy. Her top high school scoring game was 28 points. She also had a 21-point game vs. Pulaski County and a pair of 20-point nights as a senior at Patrick Henry in Roanoke. FOUR NOT OF A KIND - Georgia State s four freshman recruits come from four different states. Ashley Watson was recruited out of California, Brittany Johnson was found on the courts in Indiana, Miranda Smith was a standout in western Virginia and Kayla Nolan was right here in the shadows of GSU in metro Atlanta. The four will begin classes in four different areas as well. Watson will study business and computer information systems, while Johnson will begin studies in forensics and criminal justice. 20 ASHLEY WATSON # 23 Ashley took an official recruiting visit to New Mexico State as well as Georgia State. PERSONAL Watson is a quick point guard who was Player of the Year in the WCAL. The 5-foot-6 Watson averaged 12.2 points, 3.5 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals a game for Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. Ashley Watson Ashley was born on Dec. 29, 1992, in Santa Clara, Calif. in the heart of the Silicon Valley south of San Francisco. She is the daughter of Anthony and Nadine Watson. Dad is an electrical engineer with Cisco Systems and mom earned her degree in computer information systems. Her parents are natives of Cleveland, Ohio and her father was in the Air Force. Ashley has an older brother, Tony, 26, who is a web designer, and was born when the family was stationed in the Phillipines. She has a younger sister Tonjanae, 14, who is learning basketball and acting. Growing up in California, it should be no surprise she is a Lakers NBA fan. Watson is considering a business major and Computer Information Systems study path at Georgia State. Her final prep totals included 1,119 points, 313 assists and 226 steals. Watson shot 77 percent from the free throw line for her high school career. She was the San Jose Mercury News Junior of the Year and Sophomore of the Year. She was a first-team all-league pick and a threetime All-CCS pick as well as a three-time West Catholic League pick. Her top scoring game was a 28-point game vs. St. Ignatius. Watson had a 21-point, 5-assist game and led her team with 13 points in the title-winning game. As a senior, she had an eight-assist outing vs. Pinewood. Watson was named a Top 10 Point Guard by ESPNRise Magazine. She was also on the Hawaii Iolani Classic All-Tournament team at the Honolulu event...the Monarchs of Coach Sue Phillips won three CCS titles, one NorCal championship and one state championship. In AAU play, Watson was a member of the San Jose Cagers and a member of several All-Tournament teams during their competition. She began in the sixth grade with East Palo Alto.
