2 News and Notes Preview After sweeping its three-game homestand, the Stetson women s basketball team will go for their first road win of the year Saturday as they visit the Charlotte 49ers. The Hatters (4-3) are coming off a victory over Lynn University on Tuesday in a game where all five Stetson starters scored in double figures. Charlotte (5-2) defeated UNC Wilmington on Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C. The All-Time Series vs. Charlotte Today will mark just the second meeting between Stetson and Charlotte. In the only previous meeting 23 years ago, the 49ers defeated the Hatters in Tallahassee on Dec. 1, Homecoming Stetson Assistant Coach Pam Brown will be returning to her alma mater on Saturday. Brown enjoyed a four-year career with the 49ers ( ) where she was a two-year starter and a first-team All-Atlantic 10 performer (2006). Averaging better than 10 points per game in all four seasons, Brown finished her career with 1443 points, 627 rebounds, and 114 assists. During her tenure she helped guide the 49ers to two league titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance in The program also made three straight WNIT appearances from Recap vs. Lynn Stetson shook off a sluggish first half and opened the second stanza on a 22-2 run before finishing off a victory over visiting Lynn University Tuesday afternoon at the Edmunds Center. Nearly 3000 local elementary school students filled the stands on Volusia County Schoolchildren Day and saw the Hatters (4-3) win their third straight game and remain undefeated at home (4-0) on the season. Cherisse Burris was one of five Hatters in double figures as she finished with a season-high 13 points. Shanasa Sanders (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Jama Sharp (13 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles, while Victoria McGowan and Sasha Sims added 10 points apiece. The Hatters grabbed a seasonhigh 54 rebounds and held a advantage over Lynn on the boards. Sanders collected eight of the Hatters 23 offensive rebounds. Home Cooking The Hatters have won eight straight home games (4-0 this season), 20 of their last 21, and 23 of their last 25 games at the Edmunds Center. Mid-Major Poll In the Dec. 4 CollegeInsider.com Women s Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, the Hatters are receiving six votes for an unofficial #37 ranking. No Close Games Stetson s last six games have all been decided by 12 points or more. The only close game the Hatters have played this year was a two-point loss to Hofstra in the season opener. Tough Schedule The Hatters are facing their third opponent this year that played in the WNIT last year. Stetson has already played Hofstra and USF, and the Hatters will play Florida Atlantic next week. Three-Point Team Record The Hatters set a new single-game school record by hitting 14 three-pointers in their win over Ball State on Nov. 25. The Hatters Nickname The unlikely combination of a famous hat manufacturer and a university produced a novel nickname for Stetson University. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the university s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all began in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At Deland s request, Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in The name Hatter was used then and is still in use today Hatter Awards McGowan = Player of the Week For the first time this season and for the fifth time in her career, Victoria McGowan was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 27. McGowan averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists while leading the Hatters to a pair of victories. Against B-CU, she scored a season-high 27 points, including 13 in a row during a key second half-run, while adding eight rebounds and five steals. Against Ball State, McGowan tied with teammate Shanasa Sanders with a game-high 16 points. She hit four of the Hatters schoolrecord 14 three-pointers while dishing out seven assists. For the week McGowan shot 54 percent (13-for-24) from the field and 75 percent (9-for-12) from behind the arc. The Sports Management major currently ranks third in the league in scoring (17.0 ppg), seventh in rebounding (6.8 rpg), and second in assists (5.0 apg). McGowan is the only player in school history and one of 11 in Atlantic Sun history to earn the league s Player of the Week award five times. Sharing the Ball The Hatters picked up 24 assists in their win over Ball State on Nov. 25. The last time Stetson had 24 or more assists in a game was on Jan. 3, 1998, in a double overtime loss to UCF. The Hatters had 26 assists in that game. Lynn Bria was the head coach of UCF. Leaders / Sharp Shooting Hatters The Hatters currently lead the in both field goal percentage (.413) and free throw percentage (.761), and the Hatters rank second in three-point field goal percentage (.347). Shanasa Sanders (15-17,.882) technically leads the conference in free throw percentage, although teammate Sasha Sims (11-12,.917) has a higher percentage she doesn t have enough attempts to qualify.

Two of the Hatters three losses this year came to Big East opponent USF and ACC opponent Florida State, both of whom are still undefeated on the season. USF is now 7-0 and receiving votes in the Top 25 polls while Florida State is also 7-0 and ranked 24th in the nation. Preseason Accolades The Stetson women s basketball team was picked to finish first in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason coaches poll, and the league s head coaches also predicted the Hatters to win the conference tournament. For the second straight year, senior guard Victoria McGowan was selected as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year. McGowan earned Player of the Year honors last season after leading the league in points, assists, steals, field goals made and free throws made. Joining McGowan on the preseason all-conference team were senior guard Shanasa Sanders and junior forward Sasha Sims. Best Class Ever? Stetson s senior class has the opportunity to be winningest four-year class in the history of the women s basketball program. Since the start of the season, the Hatters have won 53 games. The senior class won 68 games over four seasons, so the Hatters need 16 more wins this season to set a new high-water mark. Senior CLASS Award Senior guard Victoria McGowan has been selected as one of just 30 NCAA Division I women s basketball student-athletes as a candidate for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. 4 The Head Coach Lynn Bria HEAD COACH Charleston (WV), th at Stetson Lynn Bria is in her fifth season at the helm of Stetson women s basketball in after a second straight excellent campaign in Under Bria, the Hatters won a school record 23 games and advanced to the postseason for the second year in a row, participating in the WNIT for the first time in school history. Three players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors including Player of the Year and All-Tournament Team selection Victoria McGowan, who led the nation with three triple-doubles. Also honored were Second Team All-Alantic Sun forward Sasha Sims and All-Freshman Team forward Cherisse Burris. Bria s Hatters won 20 games for the first time in 10 seasons, captured their third Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and first time since Stetson s turnaround under Bria from 6-24 to (+12.5 games) was the second largest improvement in NCAA Division I women s basketball. Honors that came to members of the team included Tournament MVP (Victoria McGowan), All-Tournament Team (Tierra Brown, Sasha Sims), Second Team All-Atlantic Sun (McGowan), All- Freshman Team (Sims), Player of the Week (Natasha Graboski) and Newcomer of the Week (McGowan twice, Sims). Graboski went on to sign a professional contract with Alexandria of Romania s Division 1 League in the summer of In Bria led the Hatters to their seventh consecutive tournament appearance. In her first season at Stetson, Bria made an immediate impact on the recruiting trail as her incoming class was ranked by Michael T. White s noted scouting service All-Star Girls Report as the best in the Atlantic Sun and in the top third of all NCAA Division I teams. Bria has coached women s basketball for 20 years with 14 seasons of Division I head coaching experience to her credit at UCF, Ohio University and Stetson. In addition to coaching, she has extensive classroom experience at the university level and is committed to developing young women both athletically and academically. Prior to joining the Hatters, Bria spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at top-level programs West Virginia ( ) and most recently the University of Miami. Her excellent recruiting skills led to the Hurricanes signing a Top 25 incoming class according to recruiting experts at With WVU, Bria served as recruiting coordinator in addition to her on-court coaching duties. Her leadership helped the Mountaineers achieve one of their best seasons in school history, which featured an at-large bid to and second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well as the second-largest turnaround in W-L record in Big East Conference history (15-16 to overall and from 4-12 to 11-5 in Big East games). From , Bria was the head coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She is second all-time in career wins at Ohio and was the first coach in Bobcats history to sign a recruit that would become Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year. Prior to taking the position at Ohio, Bria led UCF for three seasons from Her final Golden Knights team in was the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun) regular season and tournament champions and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, Bria was named the TAAC Coach of the Year. In just three seasons, she ranked second in career wins at UCF. Bria s first head coaching position came at Division II Texas Woman s University in Denton, Texas for three seasons from At the age of 24, Bria was the fourth-youngest head coach in the country when she was hired. She coached the team, coordinated fundraising and taught in the Kinesiology department in addition to serving on the NCAA Division II Tournament regional selection committee. Her Pioneer squads won more games each year of her tenure than the one previously. Her first three years out of college at the University of Charleston (W. Va.) were spent on the coaching staffs at Marshall (where she obtained her Master s degree in 1992) and Radford, where she helped lead the Highlanders to the Big South regular season and tournament titles in A standout performer for the Charleston Golden Eagles, the Class of 1990 graduate was inducted into her alma mater s Athletic Hall of Fame in She scored 1,146 points in her career, averaging 10.3 points per game and was a 75.3 percent free throw shooter over her career.
