3 News and Notes Preview The Stetson women s basketball team returns to Preseason WNIT action Friday as the Hatters visit Stephen F. Austin. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm ET at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Stetson will play again Saturday against either Georgia State or North Carolina A&T. The two Friday losers play at pm ET, while the winners play at 7 pm ET. The All-Time Series vs. the Opponents Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between Stetson and Stephen F. Austin. Georgia State leads the all-time series 4- over Stetson, with the last meeting coming in. North Carolina A&T leads the all-time series - over Stetson. The teams last met in 7. Oklahoma Recap Stetson fell 78-6 to th-ranked Oklahoma in the Preseason WNIT opener. The Hatters trailed by just nine at halftime still only trailed 49-9 with 4: to play. Senior Sasha Sims led three Hatters in double figures with 6 points. Junior Jama Sharp registered points and six assists while freshman Brianti Saunders added points in her collegiate debut. Stetson connected on 8 of its free throw attempts. Freshman Shine in Debut Four Hatter freshmen made their collegiate debut at Oklahoma. Brianti Saunders scored points and grabbed four rebounds (three offensive) in 8 minutes. Amber Porter collected eight points, five rebounds, and two blocks in 4 minutes, DeAsia Beal played 8 minutes and scored two points on a nice drive to the basket, and Stacia Allen played seven minutes. Sasha Sims Chasing School Points Record Senior Sasha Sims is climbing the charts towards the school record for most career points. She currently ranks th in Stetson history with 8 points. Sims is 4 points shy of tying the all-time Stetson points record-holder Michelle Michael (7 points). of Senior Sasha Sims is just one of players in Stetson history to record over points and rebounds in a career, and she accomplished it in just three seasons. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the university s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all began in 88 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At Deland s request, Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in 9. The name Hatter was used then and is still in use today.

4 The Head Coach Lynn Bria HEAD COACH Charleston (WV), 99 6th Season at Stetson A three-time Atlantic Sun Conference champion as a head coach, Lynn Bria enters her sixth season at the helm of Stetson women s basketball program. In just the last three seasons Bria has turned the Hatters into a formidable force in the Atlantic Sun. She has guided the Hatters to two conference titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, a WNIT bid, and three + win seasons. In fact, Stetson is just one of three schools in the state of Florida to post over 6 victories since the start of the - season. The - season was one for the history books as the Hatters set numerous team records and captured their second A-Sun title in the past three seasons. Bria helped lead the Hatters to a school-record 4 wins overall, a - record at home, a school-record 4 wins in A-Sun play, and winning streaks of straight overall and 6 in a row at home. In the A-Sun Championship game, Stetson rallied from a -point second-half deficit to defeat topseeded and previously undefeated FGCU 7-64, and then earned their highest-ever NCAA Tournament seed (4) and an appearance in the Columbus, Ohio regional against UCLA. In -, the Hatters won a school-record games and advanced to the postseason for the second year in a row, participating in the WNIT for the first time in school history. Three players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors including A-Sun Player of the Year and All-Tournament Team selection Victoria McGowan, who led the nation with three triple-doubles. Also honored were Second Team All-Alantic Sun forward Sasha Sims and A-Sun All-Freshman Team forward Cherisse Burris. Bria s - Hatters won games for the first time in seasons, captured their third Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and first time since. Stetson s turnaround under Bria from 6-4 to - (+. games) was the second largest improvement in NCAA Division I women s basketball. Honors that came to members of the team included A-Sun Tournament MVP (Victoria McGowan), A-Sun All-Tournament Team (Tierra Brown, Sasha Sims), Second Team All-Atlantic Sun (McGowan), A-Sun All- Freshman Team (Sims), A-Sun Player of the Week (Natasha Graboski) and A-Sun Newcomer of the Week (McGowan twice, Sims). Graboski went on to sign a professional contract with Alexandria of Romania s Division League in the summer of. In 9- Bria led the Hatters to their seventh consecutive A-Sun tournament appearance. In her first season at Stetson, Bria made an immediate impact on the recruiting trail as her 9- incoming class was ranked by Michael T. White s noted scouting service All-Star Girls Report as the best in the Atlantic Sun and in the top third of all NCAA Division I teams. Bria has coached women s basketball for years with 4 seasons of Division I head coaching experience to her credit at UCF, Ohio University and Stetson. In addition to coaching, she has extensive classroom experience at the university level and is committed to developing young women both athletically and academically. Prior to joining the Hatters, Bria spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at top-level programs West Virginia (6-7) and most recently the University of Miami. Her excellent recruiting skills led to the Hurricanes signing a Top incoming class according to recruiting experts at With WVU, Bria served as recruiting coordinator in addition to her on-court coaching duties. Her leadership helped the Mountaineers achieve one of their best seasons in school history, which featured an at-large bid to and second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well as the second-largest turnaround in W-L record in Big East Conference history (-6 to - overall and from 4- to - in Big East games). From 999-6, Bria was the head coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She also led UCF for three seasons from Her final Golden Knights team in was the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun) regular season and tournament champions and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Her first head coaching position came at Division II Texas Woman s University in Denton, Texas for three seasons from A standout performer for the Charleston Golden Eagles, the Class of 99 graduate was inducted into her alma mater s Athletic Hall of Fame in. Senior Sasha Sims was tabbed as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and she was also selected to the preseason all-conference team.
