3 News and Notes Preview After three Preseason WNIT games on the road, the Stetson women s basketball team will play its home opener tonight as the Hatters host the Indiana State Sycamores. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Edmunds Center. The All-Time Series vs. Indiana State Stetson and Indiana State will be meeting for the first-time tonight. Busy Stretch The Hatters are playing their third game in four days and are in the midst of a stretch of four games in six days. Hefty Travel The Hatters traveled over 3,6 miles over two weekends to play their three Preseason WNIT games. However, Stetson s next 12 games are all in the state of Florida. The Hatters do not leave the state again until a Jan. 16 game at Mercer (Macon, Ga.) North Carolina A&T 73, Stetson 68 - Recap Stetson fell to North Carolina A&T Saturday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Hatters shot 54.5 percent from the floor, but committed 26 turnovers and surrendered 17 offensive rebounds to the Aggies (2-1). Stetson trailed by four at halftime but used an 8- run out of the locker room to take a lead. The Hatters still led by four at the 11:36 mark, but the Aggies fought back and built a five-point lead with under four minutes to play. Stetson closed the gap to one down the stretch but would pull no closer. Getting to the Line Stetson has done a good job of getting to the free throw line this season. Stetson went 18- for-21 (85.7%) at Oklahoma, 26-for-39 (66.7%) at Stephen F. Austin, and 17-of-22 (77.3%) vs. North Carolina A&T. Sasha Sims Leading the Team As the lone senior on the team, Sasha Sims will be looked to lead both on and off the court. In the first three games this season, she has led the team in scoring (16 at Oklahoma, 23 at Stephen F. Austin, and 17 vs. North Carolina A&T) and she is tied for the team lead in threepoint FG (5). Dating back to last year, she has scored 13 or more points in 1 straight games. Jama Sharp... Team Quarterback Jama Sharp has had a great start as the team s point guard. She had 11 points and six assists at Oklahoma, 14 points and a career-high 1 assists at Stephen F. Austin, and six points and another 1 assists vs. North Carolina A&T. She is averaging a team-high 38. minutes per game. Her 26 assists (8.7/game) far and away leads the Atlantic Sun. Great Start for Freshmen Amber Porter and Brianti Saunders With the departure of 53% of the team s scoring from last season, the Hatters are going to need their freshmen to contribute, and Amber Porter and Brianti Saunders have stepped up early in the season. Porter is averaging 1. points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2. blocks per game while shooting a team-high 61 percent. Saunders is averaging 1.7 points, a team-high 7. rebounds, and is tied for the team lead in three-point FG (5). She is coming off her first double-double of the season (12/1 vs. NC A&T). Sasha Sims Chasing School Points Record Senior Sasha Sims is climbing the charts towards the school record for most career points. She currently ranks 15th in Stetson history with 1178 points. Sims is 392 points shy of tying the all-time Stetson points record-holder Michelle Michael (157 points). Points in the Paint The Hatters were 21-1 last season and are now 1- this season when outscoring its opponent in the paint. Dominant at Home The Hatters went 14-1 at home last season and are 3-2 in their last 32 home games dating back to February of 211 (both losses to Florida Gulf Coast). Stetson has also won 12 straight non-conference home games. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the university s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all began in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At Deland s request, Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in 191. The name Hatter was used then and is still in use today.

4 The Head Coach Lynn Bria HEAD COACH Charleston (WV), 199 6th Season at Stetson A three-time Atlantic Sun Conference champion as a head coach, Lynn Bria enters her sixth season at the helm of Stetson women s basketball program. In just the last three seasons Bria has turned the Hatters into a formidable force in the Atlantic Sun. She has guided the Hatters to two conference titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, a WNIT bid, and three 2+ win seasons. In fact, Stetson is just one of three schools in the state of Florida to post over 65 victories since the start of the season. The season was one for the history books as the Hatters set numerous team records and captured their second A-Sun title in the past three seasons. Bria helped lead the Hatters to a school-record 24 wins overall, a 12-1 record at home, a school-record 14 wins in A-Sun play, and winning streaks of 11 straight overall and 16 in a row at home. In the A-Sun Championship game, Stetson rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat topseeded and previously undefeated FGCU 7-64, and then earned their highest-ever NCAA Tournament seed (14) and an appearance in the Columbus, Ohio regional against UCLA. In , the Hatters won a school-record 23 games and advanced to the postseason for the second year in a row, participating in the WNIT for the first time in school history. Three players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors including A-Sun Player of the Year and All-Tournament Team selection Victoria McGowan, who led the nation with three triple-doubles. Also honored were Second Team All-Alantic Sun forward Sasha Sims and A-Sun All-Freshman Team forward Cherisse Burris. Bria s Hatters won 2 games for the first time in 1 seasons, captured their third Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and first time since 25. Stetson s turnaround under Bria from 6-24 to 2-13 (+12.5 games) was the second largest improvement in NCAA Division I women s basketball. Honors that came to members of the team included A-Sun Tournament MVP (Victoria McGowan), A-Sun All-Tournament Team (Tierra Brown, Sasha Sims), Second Team All-Atlantic Sun (McGowan), A-Sun All- Freshman Team (Sims), A-Sun Player of the Week (Natasha Graboski) and A-Sun Newcomer of the Week (McGowan twice, Sims). Graboski went on to sign a professional contract with Alexandria of Romania s Division 1 League in the summer of 211. In 29-1 Bria led the Hatters to their seventh consecutive A-Sun tournament appearance. In her first season at Stetson, Bria made an immediate impact on the recruiting trail as her 29-1 incoming class was ranked by Michael T. White s noted scouting service All-Star Girls Report as the best in the Atlantic Sun and in the top third of all NCAA Division I teams. Bria has coached women s basketball for 2 years with 14 seasons of Division I head coaching experience to her credit at UCF, Ohio University and Stetson. In addition to coaching, she has extensive classroom experience at the university level and is committed to developing young women both athletically and academically. Prior to joining the Hatters, Bria spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at top-level programs West Virginia (26-7) and most recently the University of Miami. Her excellent recruiting skills led to the Hurricanes signing a Top 25 incoming class according to recruiting experts at With WVU, Bria served as recruiting coordinator in addition to her on-court coaching duties. Her leadership helped the Mountaineers achieve one of their best seasons in school history, which featured an at-large bid to and second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well as the second-largest turnaround in W-L record in Big East Conference history (15-16 to overall and from 4-12 to 11-5 in Big East games). From , Bria was the head coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She also led UCF for three seasons from Her final Golden Knights team in was the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun) regular season and tournament champions and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Her first head coaching position came at Division II Texas Woman s University in Denton, Texas for three seasons from A standout performer for the Charleston Golden Eagles, the Class of 199 graduate was inducted into her alma mater s Athletic Hall of Fame in 23. She scored 1,146 points in her career, averaging 1.3 points per game and was a 75.3 percent free throw shooter over her career. 5 A-Sun Preseason Polls Preseason Accolades The Stetson University women s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason coaches poll. Senior Sasha Sims was tabbed as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and she was also selected to the preseason all-conference team. Last season, Sims averaged 12. points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game and earned secondteam all-conference honors. Sims averaged better than 17 points per game during the Atlantic Sun Championship and was named to the all-tournament team.
