THE HATTERS NICKNAME The unlikely combination of a famous hat manufacturer and a university produced a novel nickname for Stetson University. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the university s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the wellknown Stetson hats. It all began in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At DeLand s request, Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Over the past five seasons Bria has turned the Hatters into a formidable force in the Atlantic Sun. She has guided the Hatters to two conference titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, three WNIT bids, and five consecutive 20+ win seasons. In fact, Stetson is just one of two schools in the state of Florida to post as many as 117 victories since the start of the season. Stetson posted its fifth straight 20-win season in , compiling a 23-8 record overall. The Hatters won 11 non-conference games for the time ever, and the 23 wins overall tied for the third-winningest season in school history. Three Hatters were named First-Team All-Conference for the second year in a row, including the league s Defensive Player of the Year Amber Porter. In and for the third year in a row, the Hatters set a school-record for most victories in a single-season with 27. Stetson also won a school-record 16 conference games and won a school-record 16 consecutive contests during the regular season. The Hatters also earned their second-ever bid to the WNIT and the program s first-ever NCAA postseason victory, a win at Miami on Mar. 20. Stetson had three players named First Team All-Conference, including A-Sun Freshman of the Year Amber Porter. The season was one for the history books as the Hatters set numerous team records and captured their second A-Sun title in the past three seasons. Bria helped lead the Hatters to a school-record 24 wins overall, a 12-1 record at home, a school-record 14 wins in A-Sun play, and winning streaks of 11 straight overall and 16 in a row at home. In the A-Sun Championship game, Stetson rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat top-seeded and previously undefeated FGCU 70-64, and then earned their highest-ever NCAA Tournament seed (14) and an appearance in the Columbus, Ohio regional against UCLA. In , the Hatters won a school-record 23 games and advanced to the postseason for the second year in a row, participating in the WNIT for the first time in school history. Three players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors including A-Sun Player of the Year and All-Tournament Team selection Victoria McGowan, who led the nation with three triple-doubles. Also honored were Second Team All-Alantic Sun forward Sasha Sims and A-Sun All-Freshman Team forward Cherisse Burris. Bria s Hatters won 20 games for the first time in 10 seasons, captured their third Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and first time since Stetson s turnaround under Bria from 6-24 to (+12.5 games) was the second largest improvement in NCAA Division I women s basketball. Honors that came to members of the team included A-Sun Tournament MVP (Victoria McGowan), A-Sun All-Tournament Team (Tierra Brown, Sasha Sims), Second Team All-Atlantic Sun (McGowan), A-Sun All-Freshman Team (Sims), A-Sun Player of the Week (Natasha Graboski) and A-Sun Newcomer of the Week (McGowan twice, Sims). Graboski went on to sign a professional contract with Alexandria of Romania s Division 1 League in the summer of Bria has coached women s basketball for 20 years with 14 seasons of Division I head coaching experience to her credit at UCF, Ohio University and Stetson. In addition to coaching, she has extensive classroom experience at the university level and is committed to developing young women both athletically and academically. From , Bria was the head coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She also led UCF for three seasons from Her final Golden Knights team in was the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun) regular season and tournament champions and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Her first head coaching position came at Division II Texas Woman s University in Denton, Texas for three seasons from A standout performer for the Charleston Golden Eagles, the Class of 1990 graduate was inducted into her alma mater s Athletic Hall of Fame in She scored 1,146 points in her career, averaging 10.3 points per game and was a 75.3 percent free throw shooter over her career.

4 4 NEWS AND NOTES STREAKING Preview The No. 4 seed Stetson Hatters will host the No. 5 seed McNeese State Cowgirls Thursday night in the round of 16 of the WBI. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN3 and WSBB. The All-Time Series vs. McNeese State - 1st Meeting Thursday will be the first-ever meeting between Stetson and McNeese State. Stetson in Postseason Play Stetson is 1-6 all-time in postseason play. The Hatters defeated Miami (Fla.) in the 2014 WNIT first round. Postseason Honors Junior Brianti Saunders earned Atlantic Sun first-team all-conference honors, junior Breana Bey was one of three players named A-Sun Newcomer of the Year, and McKenna Beach was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year. Bey also earned second-team all-conference honors and Myka Johnson-Matthews joined Beach on the all-freshman team. All-Tournament Team Honors Sophomore Sarah Sagerer earned Atlantic Sun all-tournament team honors after averaging 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game in the two A-Sun tournament games. She also shot 70.5 percent from the floor and averaged 24.0 minutes per game. Home Cooking Stetson is 12-3 at home this year. Overall, the Hatters are 69-9 (.885) over their past 78 home games. A-Sun Quarterfinal Win Stetson advanced to the A-Sun semifinals with a victory over Kennesaw State on Friday. The Hatters outscored the Owls 28-5 in the third quarter to pull away. Brianti Saunders was 9-for-17 with four 3-pointers for 25 points. Sarah Sagerer registered 14 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks off the bench. Breana Bey hit her first 3-pointer of the season just before the halftime buzzer to give Stetson a two-point lead at the break. One Win From 20 The Hatters need one more victory this season to extend their streak of 20-win seasons to six in a row. In the state of Florida, only Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast have won 20 or more games in each of the past five seasons. DeAsia Beal Helping Lead the Team With her play on the court and her active leadership role, DeAsia Beal is having a major impact on the Hatters. Breana Bey Sinks Two Clutch Free Throws In Stetson s victory over Eastern Illinois on Dec. 13, Breana Bey sunk two game-winning free throws with 2.7 seconds left. She said her teammates encouraged her during the delay prior to shooting the free throws while the officials checked the monitor to see who committed the previous foul. Speaking Of Clutch DeAsia Beal drained a game-winning 3-pointer out of the right corner with 10.8 seconds left in Stetson s win at UNCW. She had been just 1-for-12 shooting from behind the arc on the road trip prior to that shot. She said coach Bria encouraged to keep shooting, as long she was taking good shots. The 107 points scored was the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. On Dec. 4, Brianti Saunders became the 22nd player in school history to score 1000 career points On Dec. 20, Brianti Saunders set the school single-game scoring record with a 40-point performance vs. Georgia Southern. She was 12-for-16 from the floor, 4-for-6 from 3-point and 12-for-13 from the line. The previous record of 39 points had stood for 29 seasons and 842 games. On Jan. 25, Brianti Saunders scored 35 points at Lipscomb, tying for the fourth highest single-game points total in school history and setting a school record for points in a road game. Brianti Saunders is just the second player in school history to have two games of 10- for-10 shooting from the free throw line or better. Saunders was 10-for-10 in the Hatters win over NJIT and 11-for-11 in the Hatters win at Lipscomb. Brianti Saunders is just one of two Hatters all-time to score 400 points in three consecutive seasons (Victoria McGowan, ). Brianti Saunders is just one of five Hatters all-time to score 500 points in a singleseason.
