The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the university s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all began in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At Deland s request, Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in The name Hatter was used then and is still in use today.

4 A-Sun Preseason Polls Preseason Accolades The Stetson University women s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason coaches poll. Senior Sasha Sims was tabbed as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and she was also selected to the preseason all-conference team. Last season, Sims averaged 12.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game and earned secondteam all-conference honors. Sims averaged better than 17 points per game during the Atlantic Sun Championship and was named to the all-tournament team. She has already surpassed 1000 points for her career and is just 16 blocks shy of breaking the schoolrecord in that category. Preseason Coaches Poll Pl. Team (1st Place Votes) Points 1. She hit four three pointers and scored 22 points in the first half alone to help Stetson run out to a halftime lead. I thought her response was great, coach Bria said. Not just offensively and hitting shots, but defensively she just gives us so much effort every game. She did a real good job of handling their pressure and helping Jama get the ball up the floor. Amber Porter Filling the Stat Sheet Fellow freshman Amber Porter also had a huge game Monday, filling the stat sheet with career-highs of 23 points (10-of-15 shooting), 15 rebounds, and six blocks. She became the first Hatter since Natasha Graboski in 2010 to grab at least 15 rebounds in a game, and the first Hatter since Josyln Giles in 2002 to collect six blocks in game. Cherisse Burris Crashing the Boards Junior Cherisse Burris collected her fourth career double-double Monday with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She leads the team with 50 rebounds this season (7.1 per game). Hefty Travel The Hatters traveled over 3,600 miles over the first two weekends of the season to play in three Preseason WNIT games. However, Stetson is now playing a stretch of 12 straight games in the state of Florida. The Hatters do not leave the state again until a Jan. 16 game at Mercer (Macon, Ga.) Sasha Sims Chasing School Points Record Senior Sasha Sims is climbing the charts towards the school record for most career points. She currently ranks 11th in Stetson history with 1259 points. Sims is 11 points shy of cracking the top 10 all-time scorers in Stetson history. Points in the Paint Matter The Hatters were 21-1 last season and are now 4-0 this season when outscoring its opponent in the paint. Stetson outscored Florida A&M in points in the paint. Best Four-Year Records Since the start of the season, the Hatters have won 71 games, the second-highest four-year win total in Stetson women s basketball history. Last year s senior class owns the all-time record with 73 wins from through : wins through wins through Present wins through Fall Signees In the fall signing period, the Hatters welcomed Keevana Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School), Lashai Geeter (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King Jr. Senior HS), and Sarah Sagerer (Vocklabruck, Austria/The Rock School) to the program Hatter Awards A-Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Sasha Sims Atlantic Sun Player of the Week Sasha Sims...Nov. 25 Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week Brianti Saunders...Nov. 18 Brianti Saunders...Nov. 25 By The Numbers 181 The number of free throws the Hatters have shot this season, second in the Atlantic Sun and an average of 25.9 attempts per game. 71 The number of wins the Hatters have collected since the start of the season, the third-highest total in the state of Florida and just two shy of tying the schoolrecord for most wins in a four-year span 11 The number of points Sasha Sims needs to crack the top 10 all-time scorers in Stetson history.

5 The Head Coach Lynn Bria HEAD COACH Charleston (WV), 1990 Sixth Season at Stetson (84-81) 19th Career Season ( ) A three-time Atlantic Sun Conference champion as a head coach, Lynn Bria is in her sixth season at the helm of Stetson women s basketball program. In just the last three seasons Bria has turned the Hatters into a formidable force in the Atlantic Sun. She has guided the Hatters to two conference titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, a WNIT bid, and three 20+ win seasons. In fact, Stetson is just one of three schools in the state of Florida to post over 65 victories since the start of the season. The season was one for the history books as the Hatters set numerous team records and captured their second A-Sun title in the past three seasons. Bria helped lead the Hatters to a school-record 24 wins overall, a 12-1 record at home, a school-record 14 wins in A-Sun play, and winning streaks of 11 straight overall and 16 in a row at home. In the A-Sun Championship game, Stetson rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat topseeded and previously undefeated FGCU 70-64, and then earned their highest-ever NCAA Tournament seed (14) and an appearance in the Columbus, Ohio regional against UCLA. In , the Hatters won a school-record 23 games and advanced to the postseason for the second year in a row, participating in the WNIT for the first time in school history. Three players earned All-Atlantic Sun honors including A-Sun Player of the Year and All-Tournament Team selection Victoria McGowan, who led the nation with three triple-doubles. Also honored were Second Team All-Alantic Sun forward Sasha Sims and A-Sun All-Freshman Team forward Cherisse Burris. Bria s Hatters won 20 games for the first time in 10 seasons, captured their third Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history and first time since Stetson s turnaround under Bria from 6-24 to (+12.5 games) was the second largest improvement in NCAA Division I women s basketball. Honors that came to members of the team included A-Sun Tournament MVP (Victoria McGowan), A-Sun All-Tournament Team (Tierra Brown, Sasha Sims), Second Team All-Atlantic Sun (McGowan), A-Sun All- Freshman Team (Sims), A-Sun Player of the Week (Natasha Graboski) and A-Sun Newcomer of the Week (McGowan twice, Sims). Graboski went on to sign a professional contract with Alexandria of Romania s Division 1 League in the summer of In Bria led the Hatters to their seventh consecutive A-Sun tournament appearance. In her first season at Stetson, Bria made an immediate impact on the recruiting trail as her incoming class was ranked by Michael T. White s noted scouting service All-Star Girls Report as the best in the Atlantic Sun and in the top third of all NCAA Division I teams. Bria has coached women s basketball for 20 years with 14 seasons of Division I head coaching experience to her credit at UCF, Ohio University and Stetson. In addition to coaching, she has extensive classroom experience at the university level and is committed to developing young women both athletically and academically. Prior to joining the Hatters, Bria spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at top-level programs West Virginia ( ) and most recently the University of Miami. Her excellent recruiting skills led to the Hurricanes signing a Top 25 incoming class according to recruiting experts at With WVU, Bria served as recruiting coordinator in addition to her on-court coaching duties. Her leadership helped the Mountaineers achieve one of their best seasons in school history, which featured an at-large bid to and second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well as the second-largest turnaround in W-L record in Big East Conference history (15-16 to overall and from 4-12 to 11-5 in Big East games). From , Bria was the head coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She also led UCF for three seasons from Her final Golden Knights team in was the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun) regular season and tournament champions and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Her first head coaching position came at Division II Texas Woman s University in Denton, Texas for three seasons from A standout performer for the Charleston Golden Eagles, the Class of 1990 graduate was inducted into her alma mater s Athletic Hall of Fame in She scored 1,146 points in her career, averaging 10.3 points per game and was a 75.3 percent free throw shooter over her career. 9 Quickie Game Summaries and Quotes Game 41 Nov. 8, 2013 Norman, Okla. Stetson (0-1) #11 Oklahoma (1-0) Stetson fell to 11th-ranked Oklahoma in the Preseason WNIT opener. The Hatters trailed by just nine at halftime still only trailed with 14:22 to play. Senior Sasha Sims led three Hatters in double figures with 16 points. Junior Jama Sharp registered 11 points and six assists while freshman Brianti Saunders added 10 points in her collegiate debut. Stetson connected on 18 of its 21 free throw attempts. Coach Bria: I thought overall for about 30 minutes we played a heck of a game. It is not the result that I wanted, but I am completely encouraged. We rebounded very well, and I thought overall we presented some match-up problems for (Oklahoma). I am pleased with our effort. Game 24 Nov. 15, 2013 Nacogdoches, Texas Stetson (1-1) Stephen F. Austin (0-2) In a high-scoring, fast-paced game that had a flavor of postseason play, Stetson nailed down its first win of the season with a victory over host Stephen F. Austin in the Preseason WNIT. Sasha Sims led five Hatters in double figures with 23 points as Stetson advanced to play North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m. Saturday night. Jama Sharp scored 14 points and added a career-high 10 assists for her second career double-double. Cherisse Burris (13 points), Amber Porter (12 points), and Brianti Saunders (10 points) also reached double figures. Coach Bria: I thought we were better from our last game. If we get better every game, we are going to be OK. We rebounded the ball much better and we just had a lot more effort on the glass. I thought we did a great a job of only giving them one shot. Stephen F. Austin came back and cut the lead and we could have folded, but we made some plays down the stretch and I was really proud of our kids. Game 34 Nov. 16, 2013 Nacogdoches, Texas North Carolina A&T (2-1) Stetson (1-2) Stetson fell to North Carolina A&T to close the Preseason WNIT. The Hatters shot 54.5 percent from the floor, but committed 26 turnovers and surrendered 17 offensive rebounds to the Aggies. Stetson trailed by four at halftime but used an 8-0 run out of the locker room to take a lead. The Hatters still led by four at the 11:36 mark, but the Aggies fought back and built a five-point lead with under four minutes to play. Stetson closed the gap to one down the stretch but would pull no closer. Coach Bria: We didn t execute offensively the entire second half. (North Carolina A&T) did a really good job, their defense is hard to play against, but we just threw the ball away. We had entirely too many turnovers, and we gave up entirely too many rebounds. When you turn the ball over and you are not rebounding, you are probably not going to win. Game 4 Nov. 18, 2013 DeLand, Fla. Indiana State (2-2) Stetson (2-2) Behind a 55-point second-half scoring effort, Stetson rolled to victory over Indiana State in the Hatters home opener. Sasha Sims led five Hatters in double figures with 24 points. Brianti Saunders and Cherisse Burris added 15 points apiece, while Jama Sharp scored 13 and C.J. Coddington netted a career-high 12. The Hatters also reached 90 points for the first time this season and shot 47.5% from the floor. Coach Bria: We played a lot better and a lot more in sync. Indiana State is a good team and they are wellcoached. We knew we had to play well. We had a lot of good energy today. I thought we handled their pressure really well. Game 54 Nov. 20, 2013 Daytona Beach, Fla. Stetson (3-2) Bethune-Cookman (1-3) A decisive 16-0 run midway through the second half lifted visiting Stetson to a victory over Bethune- Cookman. Sasha Sims scored a career-high 28 points while freshmen Brianti Saunders (18 points) and Amber Porter (16 points) registered career-high point totals of their own. Stetson also completed a busy stretch of four games in six days with a 3-1 mark. Coach Bria: We look so much better than we did even a week ago. I am very pleased with our progress. Honestly, I am pleasantly surprised. We have come along a little further than where I thought we would be at this point and time. However, our main goal is to be a good team in January and February, and we just have to keep improving. Game 64 Nov. 29, 2013 Tallahassee, Fla. Stetson (3-3) Florida State (5-1) Sasha Sims scored 16 points and Jama Sharp added 10, but Stetson fell to host Florida State at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The loss snapped Stetson s two-game win streak. An early 14-0 run by Florida State put the Hatters down early, but Stetson climbed back to within nine at halftime and to within six early in the second half. However, the Hatters would connect on just six field goals the rest of the way. Coach Bria: In the first half I thought we played as tough as anyone could against them. I thought for the first six minutes we just weren t used to their size. We couldn t see and we turned the ball over, and that hurt us. In the second half we scored early, but they went on a run and we just couldn t score. They wore us down a little bit inside. Game 7 Dec. 2, 2013 Tallahassee, Fla. Stetson (4-3) Florida A&M (5-3) Freshman Brianti Saunders scored a career-high 30 points on 11-for-15 shooting as Stetson completed its two-game Tallahassee road swing with a resounding victory over host Florida A&M. The Hatters shot 59% from the floor and surpassed the 100-point plateau for the first time since Saunders hit four three-pointers in the game, all in the first half, to help Stetson get off to a halftime lead. Fellow freshman Amber Porter finished with career-highs of 23 points, 15 rebounds, and six blocks. Cherisse Burris (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Jama Sharp (14 points, 10 assists) also had double-double performances. Sasha Sims added 13 points to give the Hatters five players in double figures. Coach Bria: The response from the last game was great. I thought we did a great job of sharing the basketball. We had quite a few possessions where we made the extra pass and found the open person. I thought Amber and (Brianti) carried us in the first half. In the second half Amber hit some really key baskets when we turned the ball over for a little bit. Amber was open and got a couple of and-ones that really kept the gap. Game Notes: The 101 points is a team-high in the Atlantic Sun this year, surpassing the Hatters 90-point game vs. Indiana State... Saunders s 30-point game is an individual high in the Atlantic Sun this year. She had 22 in the first half alone... The last Hatter to score 30 points or more in a game was Victoria McGowan (33) at Kennesaw State this past January... Porter s 15 rebounds was the most by a Hatter since Natasha Graboski had 15 vs. Georgia Southern in Porter s six blocks ties for the third-most in school history and is the most since Joslyn Giles blocked eight shots vs. Bethune-Cookman in Stetson freshmen combined for 62 points as DeAsia Beal (5) and Sydni Davis (4) added to Saunders and Porter s totals... Stetson had five players in double figures for the second time this season... Jama Sharp dished out 10 assists for the third time this season...the Hatters shot 67% in the first half en route to 55 points.
