Kingston, R.I.! Dec. 11, 2004! 4:00 p.m. The Front Page The University of Rhode Island women s basketball team continues to feel the effects of the injury bug that has bitten the team since the beginning of preseason practice. While most teams use larger rotations at the beginning of the season as the players work their way into mid-season form, Rhody has used just six players in each of its last four games and in five of the seven games this season. That shortage on players has hurt Rhody when dealing with foul trouble and with fatigue. In three of the Rams losses this season, including Tuesday s setback to Holy Cross, Rhody has led for almost the entire second half, only to see the game slip away at the end. In the second game of the season against Harvard, the Rams led from the 14:15 mark in the second half until Harvard tied the game with nine seconds left to force overtime, when the Crimson pulled out the win. Against Brown on Dec. 1, the Rams owned the lead from the 10:53 mark in the second half until Brown hit the game-winning shot with two seconds remaining. On Tuesday night in the home opener against Holy Cross, Rhody held the lead for 21- straight minutes from the 3:08 mark in the first half until the Crusaders overtook the Rams with 2:00 to play. Now the Rams look to get back on the winning track when they host Marquette on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Ryan Center. This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Marquette enters the game with a 5-2 record, but has dropped two-straight since opening the season with five-consecutive wins. 6 Tom Garrick Head Coach Birthdate: July 7, 1966 Hometown: West Warwick, R.I. Education: B.A., Rhode Island, 1989 Coaching Career: Assistant Men s Coach, Rhode Island, Assistant Women s Coach, Rhode Island, Acting Head Coach, Rhode Island, Assistant Coach, Virginia, 2004 Head Coach, Rhode Island, 2004-present West Warwick, R.I. native Tom Garrick, one of the greatest players in URI basketball history, is in his first season as head coach of the Rhode Island women s basketball team. Garrick served as acting head coach for 21 games last season, leading the Rams to a record, including an mark under his watch and an 8-8 Atlantic 10 record. It was just the second time since 1996 that the Rams finished.500 in the conference. He took a job as an assistant women s coach at Virginia last spring, where he stayed for three months before returning home to take over as head coach of his alma mater s women s basketball program. Garrick has already experienced running a Division I women s basketball program for almost an entire season. Taking over the team this past season really whet my appetite, Garrick said. I found it very satisfying to be a head coach. You have to orchestrate things in the right way. It s like a big chess game. I want to give young people a positive experience, that s my objective, he said. The by-product of that is the recruitment of high quality student-athletes that will produce a good brand of successful basketball. I am looking forward to upholding that URI tradition of bringing in top student-athletes. Garrick knows his first season as head coach won t be easy, especially with one of the toughest schedules in the country, but he plans to lay the groundwork for a program that he expects to become a player on the national scene. Obviously it s not going to happen overnight, it s going to take time to build the foundation for the program that I envision, Garrick said. It might take one or two years, but what we will do everyday is look for consistent improvement. I m not trying to create a factory of basketball players, but I am trying to create a machine, where those student-athletes can excel on and off the court. Memories of Garrick s heroics from the men s season are still fresh in the minds of Rhody fans. As a high-scoring guard, he helped lead the Rams to the NCAA Sweet 16, where they lost to Duke by one point to finish the season During that season Garrick put on one of the greatest performances in Rams basketball history when he poured in a school-record tying 50 points against Rutgers en route to a Rhode Island win on March 7, 1988 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Garrick, who completed his third year as a member of the URI women s basketball staff in the spring, was named the Rhode Island Division I Women s Basketball Coach of the Year, by the state sportswriters organization, Words Unlimited. Garrick played four seasons in the NBA after being drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Clippers. He played three seasons with the Clippers and also spent time with the San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks. He then played professionally oversees in Europe, spending two years in Germany, two years in Turkey and a year in Spain before retiring after the 1998 season. Garrick also served as a men s basketball assistant for three years at Rhode Island prior to working with the women s team, helping the men s team to the 1999 Atlantic 10 Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Rhode Island athletic director Tom McElroy was similarly excited with the appointment of Garrick as head coach. In Tom Garrick, we welcome an individual who lives those values each day of his life, McElroy said. Tom s passion for his University and the Ocean State clearly separated him from other candidates. His basketball knowledge gained as a player on the college and professional levels and his six years as a college assistant coach have prepared him to lead our women s program. A resident of Seekonk, Mass., Garrick earned his bachelor s degree in speech communications at Rhode Island. As an assistant coach at Rhode Island, he has worked in a variety of areas, including recruiting, personal instruction, game coaching, outreach programs and overseeing the program s academic support system. Anyone who has followed URI athletics over the years knows what Garrick means to the University s basketball history. It was during that Sweet 16 run in the season when Garrick and his family became the subject of a CBS story that featured his late father, who was blind, and the values that were central to such a strong family. He was also on the cover of Sports Illustrated that year and made a live studio appearance on the CBS morning show on March 23, Sports Illustrated named him one of the 50 best athletes in state history in its millennium issues list of top athletes. The Providence Journal has recognized him as one of the state s greatest athletes. He finished his playing career as Rhody s 15th all-time scorer with 1,573 points and was second in school history in career steals (189) and fourth in career assists (407). 6
