1 MBCA NEWS Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association Newsletter FALL 2015 President s Message Greetings from the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association. Now entering our 54th year representing high school basketball in the Commonwealth our goal continues to be the enhancement and promotion of high school basketball in Massachusetts. The growth of the association last season was very encouraging as our membership grew to a record high 469 members. We are excited about this upcoming year and our program offerings. The Fall Newsletter includes general MBCA information and specific programs available this fall. Check out our website- mbcaorg.com... as well. Our Discount School Membership Program is again being offered to all schools this year. Athletic Directors have been notified of this cost saving membership for each school to consider and we ask you follow up with them. Joining the association is your first step in helping the MBCA continue to support high school basketball. PLEASE NOTE - Membership is required for coaches and players to be included in our awards programs. Our Annual Coaches Holy Cross College on Sunday Oct 25th tips off this year s program - Your membership fee includes the cost of the clinic. Four sections of the state were each represented by boys and girls winners in two categories: All- Academic Team and All-Senior Team. Boys and Girls Sectional Players of the Year as well as The State Player of the Year were presented with plaques and trophies for their selection. The State Players of the Year were Ashley Russell of Braintree High School and Isaiah McLeod of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. k

[To be listed in spring newsletter.] NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS: Need Be a Varsity player Must average 80% or better for season Played minimum 75% of varsity schedule. A male and female player will be selected from each of our state s four sections to compete during halftime of a Celtics game at the Boston Garden in April 2016 to be crowned state champion. Sectional competition dates and locations to be announced by the Sectional Coordinators. Sectional winners (B and G) will be contacted by Dr. John Franceschini, Executive Director of the MBCA, with specific information related to finals at the Boston Garden. Each league should have a league representative. This structure allows the MBCA to disseminate information to the coaches thru them and in turn the Executive Board will have a better communication structure to receive information from coaches through the state. District Coordinators contact info is listed in the newsletter and on our web site. Coordinators will be reaching out to coaches to fill their league Representative positions. 7 Special Thank You to Nick Papas The MBCA extends a Special Thanks to long time member Nick Papas. Nick recently stepped down after serving on the Executive Board for 37 years. A tireless worker he was the MBCA 27th Past President, North District Coordinator & Publicity Director for the association. A recipient of the MBCA Leo Miller Award in 2007, he was inducted last year into our Hall of Fame after winning his 500th game as a varsity head coach.
