Giants (3-2)& Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 Giants Stadium 4:15 p.m. EDT WINNERS OF FIVE CONSECUTIVE GAMES, DENVER TRAVELS TO NEW YORK TO FACE GIANTS The Denver Broncos, who are 5-1 for the third consecutive season after reeling off five consecutive victories, put their unbeaten streak on the line Sunday when they visit the New York Giants (3-2). Kickoff at Giants Stadium is set for 4:15 p.m. EDT. Last week, Denver defeated the two-time defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The Broncos took a 25-point lead early in the third quarter before holding off a New England comeback attempt. Denver has a 4-4 (.500) all-time record against the Giants and looks to improve its 1-3 (.250) mark against the club in road games. The teams last played on Sept. 10, 2001, with Denver earning a victory on Monday Night Football in the first regular-season game ever played at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The Broncos have enjoyed recent success against NFC teams, compiling a (.683) record in those games under Head Coach Mike Shanahan (1995-Present). New York will be the third opponent Denver has faced this season that is coming off an overtime game. The Dallas Cowboys needed the extra period to defeat the Giants on Sunday at Texas Stadium. NOTES FROM LAST WEEK S GAME With their win against New England, the Broncos won their sixth consecutive game against a Super Bowl participant from the previous season The win also was Denver s sixth in a row at INVESCO Field at Mile High, marking the longest regularseason home winning streak at the stadium since the team began playing its home games there in 2001 Second-year Broncos running back Tatum Bell posted his second consecutive 100-yard rushing performance (114 yds.), and his success marked Denver s third consecutive game with a 100-yard rusher The Broncos improved to 5-1 or better for the sixth time in Mike Shanahan s 11 seasons as Denver s coach Denver extended its franchise record streak without a turnover to four consecutive games (264 minutes and 31 seconds) The Broncos posted the highest net yardage total in a quarter during the Mike Shanahan era (1995-Present) with 247 yards in the second quarter against New England that fueled three touchdown drives. 8 PROTECTING THE FOOTBALL A key to the Broncos five-game winning streak has been the team s ability to hold onto the football. Denver has not committed a turnover in its last four games, collecting six opponent takeaways during that period. The team extended its franchiserecord turnover-less streak with no giveaways against the twotime defending Super Bowl champion Patriots on Oct. 16. In fact, the Broncos have not committed a turnover in the last 264 minutes and 31 seconds. The turnover-less streak dates back to the 9:31 mark of the third quarter against San Diego on Sept. 18 when Jake Plummer was intercepted by safety Bhawoh Jue. Plummer has not thrown an interception in his last 107 attempts and ranks seventh in the NFL (4th in AFC) with a 1.7 interception percentage. DENVER WINNING TURNOVER BATTLE Less than one year after ranking toward the bottom of the NFL in takeaway/giveaway ratio, the Broncos have been one of the league s best teams in forcing turnovers and not giving the ball up in Denver is tied for fourth in the NFL (3rd in AFC) with a +6 turnover ratio after six games, forcing 11 takeaways (7 fumbles, 4 INTs) and committing five giveaways (3 INTs, 2 fumbles) NFL TEAM LEADERS, TAKEAWAY/GIVEAWAY RATIO Team Takeaways Giveaways Ratio 1. 10 THE LAST TIME at DENVER 31, N.Y. GIANTS 20 (INVESCO FIELD AT MILE HIGH, 9/10/01) A bittersweet evening for the Broncos was highlighted by a dominating victory over the New York Giants in the inaugural game played at Denver s new home, INVESCO Field at Mile High, in front of 75,735 fans and an ABC national television audience on Monday Night Football. After a slow start, the Broncos began to take control of the contest, scoring in every quarter and outgaining the Giants Denver struck first, scoring with 1:09 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Brian Griese to tight end Patrick Hape as Denver scored the first points in their new home. After the Giants answered in the second quarter, Griese led Denver right back down the field and connected with Ed McCaffrey for a 16-yard score that sent the home team to the locker room at halftime with a 14-7 lead. The Giants would answer again and tie the score at 14 before Denver would reel off 17 consecutive points and take full command of the game. Touchdowns by Rod Smith and Mike Anderson were sandwiched around a 37-yard field goal by Jason Elam to help Denver increase its lead. Elam narrowly missed breaking by two yards his own NFL record when he missed wide left on a 65-yard filed goal to close the first half. Terrell Davis recorded his 33rd career regular-season 100- yard game and Griese recorded his eighth career 300-yard passing day. Smith also added the 22nd regular season 100-yard receiving game of his career. However, two events that occurred within 12 hours of each other would quickly dampen the spirits throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Secondarily, McCaffrey was lost for the season during the contest after breaking the tibia and fibula in his left leg. Primarily, the entire nation was rocked the morning after the game by terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. NOTES FROM DENVER S LAST FIVE MEETINGS WITH THE N.Y. GIANTS at DENVER 31, N.Y. BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN DAY-AFTER-GAME PRESS CONFERENCE (10/17/05) On the running back rotation I think both of them (Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell) have played extremely well, and as far as I m concerned we have two guys that can play and they both are going to get a lot of playing time. It really doesn t matter who starts. Both of them (Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell) will get a chance to help us win. I thought it was a good combination during the game. Mike gave us some power, broke some tackles and Tatum was able to get us some big-time plays. On whether there is a preference between Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell I think you (the press) have been around me long enough to see that we ve had backs that can carry the ball times per game. So we just try to go with the scenario we think works well for us and so far it s working and if it doesn t work then we ll change it. I think you saw that Mike is a power inside runner. You know he can make some big plays... Mike is a guy that can pound you and there are very few guys that can pound you like Mike Anderson. In some situations where you feel like you have to pound, I think you put a guy like Mike in there. On noticing any growth in Tatum Bell I think number one he s healthy and when you re healthy you get opportunities. I think the only thing that s kept him out of the lineup the last couple of years is inconsistent health. He s been banged up and at least in this game he was able to get through it fairly healthy. So hopefully he can get more reps as time goes on &&&&&&&&& &33&& &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&444/567869:9;7<;=/<;m
