4 3. EVENT INFORMATION and ONLINE REGISTRATION ASAA 3A Basketball host website: Registration: Registration will occur online at the ASAA 3A Basketball host website. Click on the registration link and follow the instructions for each page. The online forms include a Team Roster, Team Picture and Team History. The team picture that you submit must be at least 640 pixels wide and no more than 500kb. The registration deadline for teams is Monday, March 17 at 2:00PM Fees: Entry Fee $ per team Banquet Fee $20.00 per person Cheques payable to Winston Churchill High School 4. Practices will be held on Wednesday, March 19th Practices will take place at WCHS - Winston Churchill High School and WMS - Wilson Middle School. Practice Basketballs: DO NOT BRING any basketballs for practice. All basketballs are ASAA approved basketballs and are purchased for the tournament. There will be six basketballs supplied for each practice and pre-game warm-up. Each school/zone is to complete the Banquet Registration Form online at the host website (part of the registration link) by 2:00PM on March 17 th, indicating the number of banquet tickets needed. Mirkovich was a member of the 1980 Canadian National Team and although Canada boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Perry is officially recognized as a Canadian Olympian. 8 11. GAME INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES Uniforms: The home team will be the one who is the highest seed. The home team will wear light jerseys. Home and visiting benches will be designated. Teams will warm up at the basket opposite to their bench. Please note that as the host team, WCHS Bulldogs will always be home, regardless of where they are in the draw. Change Rooms: Change rooms will be clearly labelled at both WCHS and WMS Practice and Pre-Game Warm-Up Basketballs: DO NOT BRING any basketballs for practice or pre-game warm-up. All basketballs are ASAA approved basketballs and are purchased for the tournament. There will be six basketballs supplied for each practice and pre-game warm-up. Recycle and Garbage containers: Recycle and Garbage containers will be located behind each bench for your team to utilize. Please keep these areas clean and place recyclables in the containers provided. Game Time Procedure: 1. In order to ensure that there is enough time for a proper warm-up and to accommodate any half-time entertainment; games are set at two hour intervals. 2. While your team is waiting for their game please ask them not to bounce basketballs in the gym or hallways while the game is in progress. 3. The floor will be swept prior to the games and/or at half-time. Please keep players off the court while the floor is being swept. 4. Prior to the start of each game, teams are asked to shake hands in a show of good sportsmanship. At this point teams are given the opportunity to exchange gifts (pins, etc.). 5. Please ensure that you hand in a correct lineup, with the 5 starters indicated, to the scorer s table 15 minutes before the game starts. 6. Teams will have 10 minutes to warm-up for each game. 7. When a game is being announced starting players will be introduced from each team and take the floor. The starters from the visiting team will be introduced first and the home team second. 8. The break at half-time will be ten minutes. Five minutes will be used for any half-time entertainment with the remaining five minutes available for team warm-up. 9. Warm-up music will be provided for all games by the tournament host. Site Manager: Each venue will have a site manager who will oversee the entire game and spectator area. If you have any questions, concerns or problems see the site manager. They will be identifiable by their volunteer t- shirts along with other provincial volunteers and committee members. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS SCHEDULE. In addition, there will be a photographer on site daily taking action shots to place on the website and the ASAA yearbook. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE. Teams that play on March 20 th will have their team photos taken first IN THE ORDER that they play games. 10 14. HOSPITALITY ROOM AND CONCESSION Concession: There will be a full cafeteria available at WCHS in the school cafeteria. Operating times: Thursday 7:00AM 9:00PM Friday 7:00AM 9:00PM Saturday 7:30AM 7:00PM There will be NO CONCESSION at WMS with the exception of school vending machines in the main lobby. Hospitality Room: Complementary food and beverage will be available at both WCHS and WMS for Officials, Coaches, and Trainers. 15. GRIEVANCE / DISCIPLINE/SPORTSMANSHIP COMMITTEE There are two key functions of the Grievance/Discipline Committee at ASAA provincials. The first function is to deal with matters that occur during competition, typically discipline/conduct issues, and appeals that may arise from ejections. The second function is to handle any other matters that arise that require dispute resolution. Any three members will form the committee with either Neil Langevin OR Gary Fredrickson as the Chair. OFFICALS and MINOR OFFICALS Officials: Tournament officials are supplied through the ALBERTA BASKETBALL OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION. The tournament assignor will be present at the coaches meeting to review any specific areas of attention for game conduct. Please remember that many of the game officials will be members of the ATA and the ATA Code of Conduct must be respected at all times. Minor Officials: There will be qualified/teacher scorekeepers, timers and other minor official for each game. Each scorekeeping table will be supervised by facility managers. If you have a concern with the timing, score or foul situations please address it through the Officials and/or Facility Managers. Do not direct comments to the minor officials. Please remember that ALL minor officials will be members of the ATA and the ATA Code of Conduct must be respected at all times. 10
11 17. ASAA 3A BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT RULES 17.1 It is incumbent upon all coaches and participants to be aware of ASAA policy. Specifically for this event, player eligibility (pp 37-49), supervision policy (p 49) and basketball policy (pp 79-89). All participants are reminded that they are guests at the two host schools and as such shall at all times be respectful of the opportunity to play in an ASAA Provincial Basketball Championship. There is an expectation that all participants will be and courteous to all host school staff, tournament officials and the many volunteers Discipline and Misconduct Breaches of the ASAA Code of Ethics are treated seriously, and as host, [we] are required to report any breaches to the ASAA office where action may occur. A portion of the ASAA Code of Ethics states Any conduct, including, but not limited to ejections, fighting and drugs and alcohol use, that results in dishonour to the athlete, the team, the school or the ASAA will not be tolerated (pp 29). Any unsportsmanlike or violent behaviour (e.g. fighting) that results in an ejection of an athlete or coach from play in an ASAA provincial championship competition shall result in a suspension from the next scheduled match of the current season, where match is understood to mean game, match, round, bout, etc. as appropriate per sport Head Coach responsibility for team discipline The following is the ASAA statement on discipline: The head coach, as a representative of the school is responsible for the conduct of all persons comprising the school s team including assistant coaches, players and bench personnel. For a coach to address, or permit anyone on his/her bench to address uncomplimentary remarks to any official during the progress of a provincial championship, or to indulge in conduct that might incite players or spectators against the officials, is a violation of the rules of the game and must likewise be considered conduct unworthy of a coach. Behavior by any member of a team, including all bench personnel, deemed objectionable conduct as defined in the rule book shall be immediately subject to the penalty prescribed in the rule book for such an offense. Expectations of Player and Team Staff conduct Conduct themselves in a positive nature/manner during, before and after the game Offer positive feedback to opponents during the game Shake hands before and after the game Be courteous, polite and friendly Show good sportsmanship during the game Show concern, respect or empathy for an opponent 17.4 Discipline/Appeal Committee All ASAA provincial championship hosts will convene a discipline/appeal committee. The committee will have the authority to address issues of a serious nature that may occur before, during or after a provincial championship match, or to hear appeals of the automatic suspension resulting from an ejection. The committee membership is established in section 15 in this 3A Boys Basketball Provincial Tournament Information package. 11
12 17.5 Dress Code Appropriate and respectful clothing is required at all times during the ASAA 3A Boys Basketball Championship during both tournament play and in the practice areas. Coaches are responsible for making sure that their players comply with an appropriate and respectful dress code. Failure to comply will result in the player not being allowed to participate until suitable attire is worn. There will be no exceptions Conduct of Spectators Teams are responsible for their own spectators. Any spectators not acting accordingly will be asked to leave the facility. Air horns and other artificial noise makers will not be allowed. Spectators should show good sportsmanship and consistently give positive feedback to players, coaches and officials Artificial noisemakers Artificial noisemakers are not permitted during provincial championship tournaments/events. These noisemakers may include but are not limited to: air horns, cow bells, plastic tube horns, garbage can lids (ASAA policy handbook p. 27). The provincial championship host shall have the authority to eject from the competition facility individuals who, following a warning, refuse to comply with this requirement. 18. SPORTSMANSHIP Sportsmanship pins will be given in recognition of any sportsmanlike conduct displayed by anyone in attendance at the provincial events. If you would like to nominate someone for a pin please notify the facility manager or committee member. Team Sportsmanship will be evaluated throughout the tournament by coaches, officials and sportsmanship committee members. 17 APPENDIX B EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN Please follow and respect the policies and procedures of this Emergency Action Plan (EAP) While Winston Churchill High School and Wilson Middle School does everything possible to prevent injuries and accidents at the school, there is still potential for serious accident and injury in any athletic event. If a serious injury occurs, time becomes critical. Subsequently, the implementation of this EAP must be adhered to while in attendance at Winston Churchill High School and Wilson Middle School events. Person in Charge: Administrator in Charge or Designate. WCHS Jonathan Dick or Toby Boulet. WMS Toby Boulet Assess injury status of a player (particularly head and/or spinal injuries). If an ambulance and paramedics are required the Person in Charge will notify the Call Person to call 911. This person will take control of an emergency situation until a medical authority arrives. Document the events of the accident and file a written report if necessary. Call Person: Call Person (Teacher supervisor or Teacher at score table) is responsible for making the 911 telephone call. Teacher supervisors and Teacher at score table are required to have a cell phone on their person while attending an athletic event while at Winston Churchill High School and Wilson Middle School. Stay in constant communication with the medical provider and the Person in Charge. Contact Tournament Chair. Tournament Chair is responsible for having his/her cell phone number available to the call person. Assist the Person in Charge with the filing of Accident Report if requested. Control Person: The Teacher supervisor and/or other Teachers at the score table are responsible for controlling the crowd and other participants. After the area is secured and controlled, they will act as the guide for emergency personnel outside of the building to ensure expedient access to the victim. Seek highly trained medical personnel in the building if the Person in Charge believes the injury is serious and cannot wait for emergency assistance to arrive. In consultation with the Person in Charge, Tournament Chair (If necessary) and game Officials the continuation of play will be determined.
