5 SEASON PREVIEW The SUNY College at Old Westbury Men's Basketball team's campaign was a season to build on. Now it's time for the season and it could be the start of something special for Old Westbury basketball. With Bernard Tomlin's recruiting efforts starting to take full effect in his seventh season, there certainly are encouraging signs. With 8 of 13 letter winners returning from last year's successful season, the bar is raised high for the Old Westbury Men's Basketball team. Since the arrival of Head Coach Bernard Tomlin, who led the Panthers to their first ever NCAA appearance in 2004, expectations have been running high. The core of five OW seniors-divine Jackson (Hempstead, N.Y.), Ian Johnson (Jamaica, N.Y.), Kenneth Eusey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Anthony Stowe (Brandywine, MD.), Brandon DeNoyer (Scotia, N.Y.) in are built for a Skyline Conference Championship and to contend in the NCAA Tournament. Old Westbury returns 83.7 percent of its scoring and 82.3 percent of its rebounding from last year's team. The Panthers claimed second place in the conference tournament, going 12-4 in league play. Kenneth Eusey did a lot of everything in his first season with the Panthers. Hailing from Brooklyn, N.Y., Eusey led the team in scoring (15.5 ppg), assists (4 apg), three-point percentage (38.0), steals (3 spg) and free throw percentage (86.9), earning all-skyline Conference first team. He also ranked in the national spotlight, with 3 steals per game (9 th in nation), 93 three-point field goals (19 th in nation) to go along with his 38 percent from beyond the arc (70 th in nation). Teaming up with Eusey is fellow classmate Ian Johnson. In , Johnson contributed 11.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.03 steals per game. Johnson will have competition from junior transfer Eddie Hood (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Freshman Brandon Mays (Roslyn, N.Y.) and Rudy Lys (White Plains, N.Y.) will vie for playing time behind Eusey at shooting guard. Mays can play both guard positions and Lys has impressed the coaching staff with his work ethic all around. The combination of Mays and Lys provides this team with a talented depth in the backcourt. Brandon DeNoyer, Junior Rory Hicks (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Thomas Butler (Hicksville, N.Y.) provides depth and leadership off the bench at the guard position. Anthony Stowe is able to fill many roles for the Panthers. Although his numbers weren't dazzling, Stowe was a solid defender and grew more comfortable in the offense as the year progressed. Stowe averaged 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game last year and will be able to play the shooting guard position as well as either forward slot in part to his 6-5 athletic frame. Junior Gathlette James (White Plains, N.Y.) is the leading candidate to start at small forward. He can knock down the mid-range shot, score off the dribble and be effective in the low-post. After missing the first few games, James quickly inserted himself on both ends of the court. He shot 59 percent from the field (33rd in nation) while grabbing five rebounds per game. Freshman DeShaun Sutton (Westbury, N.Y.) stands at 6-4 and is athletic but will need to work hard in a crowded front court. Last season Divine Jackson received the majority of the minutes at the power forward position. Jackson averaged a career high 10.4 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals. While his overall numbers were impressive enough, Jackson really started coming into his own late in the season. Jackson brings great experience and leadership as he is the last member of the NCAA Tournament team. With the loss of Dan Kane and Derek DeLoney, members of the NCAA Tournament team, Tomlin knew he had to improve the depth of the front court. Several young players will gain valuable experience this season as sophomore Joshua Frazier (Westbury, N.Y.), junior Alanzo Phillips (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior Alain Paul and true freshman Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) round out a highly touted front court. With several key pieces now in place, Tomlin has brought
6 in key personnel that will improve the depth of these positions. Old Westbury has a great foundation in the freshman and sophomore classes. Freshman Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) will be thrusted into the starting lineup as a true freshman at the center position. Prosper is a solid all-around contributor and will command big minutes with unlimited upside. He is extremely athletic and a hard worker. Sophomore center Joshua Frazier (Westbury, N.Y.) had an excellent freshman season, posting 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and shooting 44.9 percent from the floor in 12 games before going down with a season ending injury. Frazier will work hard and mature quickly with a full stable of big men for Tomlin to work with. Also vying for playing time will be Alanzo Phillips (Brooklyn, N.Y.) Phillips returns for his second season with the Panthers. Last season he saw limited action appearing in 20 games at 4.5 minutes per contest. After losing 20 pounds in the off season, Phillips developed a bit more quickly than was anticipated, and could earn some playing time this season. The Panthers tip-off their regular season with Brooklyn College on November 17th at the Old Westbury Panther Classic with Greensboro College and Plattsburgh State. The Championship and Consolation game will be held on November 18 th at the Clark Athletic Center. The 25-game schedule is headlined by non-conference home games with SUNY New Paltz (November 20), William Paterson University (January 9) while traveling to York College (November 27). The Panthers will participate in the Hampden-Sydney Holiday Hoops Tournament in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia from December to conclude the 2007 calendar year. Old Westbury opens their conference schedule at Mount Saint Mary College (December 1) before welcoming the College of Mount Saint Vincent (December 5) and rival Farmingdale State College (December 8) to the Clark Athletic Center. The Panthers will play on the road for the remainder 2007 with match ups against St. Joseph's College-Long Island (December 11) and Yeshiva University on December 27th. The Green and Ivory return to conference play on the road against Polytechnic University (January 12) and Purchase College (January 16) before returning to the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury returns home for seven of their eleven remaining games against Bard College (January 19), Maritime College (January 23) and Mount Saint Mary College (January 26). Brief stops at the College of Mount Saint Vincent (January 30) and Farmingdale State College (February 2) bring the Panthers back home for conference action against St. Joseph's College-Long Island (February 6), Polytechnic (February 9) and Yeshiva University (February 13) before traveling to Bard College on February 16th. Old Westbury wraps up the final week on the regular season at home for senior night against Purchase College (February 20) before concluding at Maritime College on February 23rd.
7 BERNARD TOMLIN HEAD COACH A legendary Long Island player and coach, Bernard Tomlin was brought to Old Westbury in 2001 to transform the Panthers into a regional power. In six seasons, he has shown that his teams are always competitive, work hard in practice, and strive to be solid citizens. In , Tomlin finished with an overall record and 11-4 against Skyline Conference competition. The Panthers adavanced to the Skyline Conference Championship game and appeared in the ECAC Championship Tournament. The season had the Panthers' back on the winning track posting a overall record and 7-7 in Skyline Conference play, while utilizing the home court advantage to a 9-4 record at the Clark Athletic Center. In , Tomlin's team posted a overall mark, playing one of the most difficult schedules in school history. The Panthers' slate included four teams who spent time in the top-25, as well as a match-up with local Division I opponent, Long Island University. In the second game of the season, Old Westbury played St. John Fisher, who ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation during the season. Also in November, the Panthers played the College of New Jersey, who were No. 17 at the time. On December 19, Old Westbury played LIU to a 10-point contest and was up against then No. 18 Gwynedd Mercy for half of the game proved to be the best season in Old Westbury men's basketball history. Highlights of the 19-9 campaign included games against Division II NY Tech and Division I Yale University, and a streak of eight-straight wins against Skyline Conference opponents between Jan. 17 and Feb. 11. Garnering the No. 1 seed in the Skyline playoffs after a 12-2 finish in league play, Old Westbury beat Yeshiva (60-42) and Farmingdale (73-66) in the playoffs to earn a match-up with No. 2 seeded Mt. St. Mary's in the championship game. The Blue Knights and the Panthers had met two weeks earlier in a regular season contest where Mt. St. Mary topped the Panthers The re-match, however, would have a different outcome, as Old Westbury edged out the Blue Knights, 68-66, clinching the Skyline Conference Championship and a berth in the 2004 NCAA Division III tournament.
8 Old Westbury dropped its first round contest against perennial power Catholic, but Tomlin's accomplishments had already entered the record books. Following the season he was once again honored by his peer, as he was named the Skyline Conference Coach of the Year for the second-straight season. In , Old Westbury continued to improve, finishing the season with a overall record. With an 11-3 mark in the league, the Panthers earned the fourth seed in the Skyline tournament, and gained further notoriety, receiving an ECAC NY/NJ Metro Region postseason tournament bid. Tomlin's accomplishments that season earned him the 2003 Skyline Conference Coach of the Year award. Prior to Tomlin's arrival, Old Westbury finished the season with a 7-18 record, good for last place in the nine-team Skyline Conference. In , his first season at Old Westbury, Tomlin's team showed a dramatic turnaround, finishing overall, and climbed to fifth place in the conference. Tomlin's coaching career began in 1986 when he guided William Patterson to a 20-9 record in his rookie season as a head coach. He also served a brief stint at Adelphi, before taking over the helm at Stony Brook University. In eight seasons with Stony Brook, Tomlin accumulated 100 wins. For his career, Tomlin boasts a overall record in 14 seasons as a head coach. Tomlin played collegiate basketball at Hofstra University, where he holds the record for field goals made in single game (20) and was the season scoring leader (11.8 PPG) and free throw leader ( ) in Tomlin played high school ball and holds the single game scoring record at Malverne High School (45 points).
