Press Row The Cougars open the road season with a trip to Clemson to take on the Tigers Monday, Nov. 13th at 7:00 p.m. Clemson leads the series 7-6, with the Tigers having taken the last six contests, the last time an win Dec. 12, Clemson is coming off a season-opening loss to Arkansas nov. 10th... the Cougars just defeated the S.C. State Bulldogs, 63-46, this past Friday. Should the Cougars win at Littlejohn it would be the first win over the Tigers since a decision during the season. It would also mark the first time CofC has opened the season 2-0 since going 4-0 in the first four games of the season. Charleston has yet to pick up a win against an ACC opponent since moving up to NCAA Division I in The Cougars are 0-10 during the stretch. While Coach Wilson is 6-3 over Clemson while at CofC, she is 9-11 over the Tigers as Coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks from her overall mark is in her career. Nany Wilson is in her 12th season as head coach of the Cougars but only her fourth since the season... During her first eight seasons the SCAIAW Coach of the Year took the team to five consecutive 20+ winning seasons, which included three AIAW National Championship appearances. (John Kresse Arena) Nancy Wilson, who has 457 career victories in 24 seasons, was named head women s basketball coach at the College of Charleston on March 27th, Wilson, 55, returned to the College of Charleston and became the sixth head coach in women s basketball history after having served as its head coach from The Lake City, S.C. native spent the previous four years as a professor in the school s Physical Education department. Head Coach Nancy Wilson earned her 450th career win during the season with the win over Wofford. The Cougars finished the season with a close loss to Furman in the SoCon Tournament first round. Charleston ended the season strong defensively, ranked fifth in the league in scoring defense and second in field goal percentage defense. The Cougars also led the SoCon in defensive rebounds. Freshman Jade Hughes made an immediate impact for the team, finishing ninth in the league in scoring and 10th in assists. She was also third in the SoCon in free throw percentage and led the team as well. In the Cougars sported a overall record and a league mark in season. The women s basketball team earned the most wins in a season since 1992 and the most conference wins ever in the 30- point win over Elon in the opening round of the Southern Conference tournament was the largest margin of victory for the Cougars over a league opponent in school history. That win also gave the College of Charleston its fourth straight tournament first round win. The Cougars closed out the regular season winning five of their last seven contests. The team also finished the season second in the conference in scoring defense and first in three-point field goal percentage defense. They also finished second blocked shots and steals. In her first year back at the helm for the Cougars, Wilson s team compiled a 7-22 record, advancing to the Southern Conference tournament quarterfinals for the third straight year, showing signs of a return to form at the close of the season. Wilson became the Cougars head coach in 1976 and led the women s basketball program to national prominence with seven 20-plus win seasons and three AIAW Division II national championship runners-up from She was also named South Carolina s Coach-of-the-Year on three occasions, while sharing National Coach-of-the- Year honors in Head Coach Nancy Wilson Wilson still ranks as the winningest women s basketball coach at the College of Charleston with a.717 ( ) percentage. While coaching basketball, Wilson also served as head volleyball coach and sported a (.689) mark over 10 seasons, taking her team to nationals on four occasions, finishing as high as 10th. After eight years at the College of Charleston, Wilson became the University of South Carolina s fifth head coach beginning with the season. Over a 10-year period, the Lady Gamecocks won five Metro Conference regular-season titles and three Metro Tournament Championships. Wilson s squad made five trips to the NCAA tournament and recorded 20-plus wins four of those years. In 1988, Wilson took her team to the NCAA Tournament second round and in 1990 took the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. In 1984, her first year with the Gamecocks, Wilson was named Metro Conference Coach-of-the-Year. Wilson left USC with a record and as the winningest coach in the history of the program. Her.608 winning percentage also ranks in the top three at the school. After leaving South Carolina Wilson spent two years as Associate Head Coach for the Seattle Reign of the American Basketball Association. Due to Wilson s success at USC, in 1992 she was named the head coach of the USA Women s Junior National Team in the Pan-American Basketball Confederation Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament. Her squad won the silver medal and qualified for the 1993 Women s Junior World Championship, which was held in Seoul, South Korea. The north squad at the 1985 National Sports Festival in Baton Rouge, La., was also coached by Wilson. She also led the Athletes in Action to a 13-1 record on a tour of Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan. After graduating from Lake City High (S.C.), Wilson earned her bachelor s degree in physical education from Coker College in She then obtained her master s degree in Physical Education from The Citadel in S h e b e g a n h e r coaching career as an assistant to the College of Charleston while teaching elementary physical education at Mt. Pleasant Academy.
