Monmouth is coming off a loss to the top-ranked Huskies on Saturday, while the Terriers were edged by St. Bonaventure, The Terriers own a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with the two games being played in and SCOUTING THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY TERRIERS Danielle Callahan leads the Terriers at 10.0 points and 4.7 assists per game, while Rashidat Agboola is just behind at 9.8 points per game and a team-best 7.2 rebounds per game. Whitney Turner has also made a strong contribution of 8.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Mollie McKendrick, Katie Poppe and Courtney Latham each also average more than 6.2 points per game. The Terriers lone win on the season came against the University of Rhode Island on Nov. 16. Against common opponents, the Terriers and Hawks are both 0-3 with the exact same average point differential (-23.0). LAST TIME OUT Monmouth fell to No. 1 Connecticut, Freshman Helena Kurt had a team-high nine points, while fellow first-year player Jenny Horvatinovic added new career highs with eight points and six rebounds. Freshman Sophie Beaudry contributed six points, while Shira Shecht had five. For UConn, 2013 Final Four MVP Breanna Stewart had 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks to pace the Huskies. Moriah Jefferson (17), Bria Hartley (14), Kiah Stokes (14) and Brianna Banks also scored in double figures. Stokes completed a double-double with 11 rebounds, while also rejecting a team-high four shots. Hartley also added six assists. Helena Kurt scored a team-high nine points, while Jenny Horvatinovic added a season-high eight points and six rebounds. Sophie Beaudry also added six points for the Hawks, while Mia Hopkins had a team-high two steals. Jamiyah Bethune added two points and two rebounds, while India Dotson scored on her first-career field-goal attempt in her first-career game played. SCORING AT THE POINT Point guards Helena Kurt and Kasey Chambers both enjoyed career-high point totals against St. Bonaventure on Nov. 22. Kurt connected for 13 points, including a five-consecutive points to tie the game at in the second half, while Chambers scored seven-straight points to give Monmouth a lead. IF ONLY THE GAME WAS 20 MINUTES LONG... The Hawks have led at the half in three of their four games this season, but sport an 0-4 record thus far this season. They led over Yale in the season opener, against Wagner on Nov. 14 and over St. Bonaventure on Nov. 22. SHIRA SCORES After establishing a new career high with 13 points in the season opener against Yale, Shira Shecht upped her career high to 20 points at Delaware. The senior sharpshooter nailed four of her first five three-point attempts against the Blue Hens. CHEVY S DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE Chevannah Paalvast compiled her first career double-double with 22 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, Nov. 14 vs. Wagner. The senior wing s previous career high in rebounds was nine. She followed up that effort with her second doubledouble next time out at Delaware with 16 points and 10 rebounds. STRONG SECOND HALF Following a first half in which Delaware outscored the Hawks, 41-23, Monmouth responded with a 14-2 run to start the second half and close to within six. For the half, Monmouth outscored Delaware, SOPHOMORE SUPERLATIVES In each of their second career starts, Jasmine Walker and Kasey Chambers put up career numbers against Wagner on Nov. 14. Walker established new career highs in points (12), rebounds (6) and minutes (27), while Chambers 10 points gave her double digits for the first time in her career. 10 SCORE 10 of the 11 players who saw the court in the Nov. 9 season opener against Yale scored for the Hawks. Shira Shecht scored a career-high and team-high 13 points, while Jasmine Walker added eight points. Mia Hopkins scored seven points in her collegiate debut, while fellow freshman Helena Kurt had six. Chevannah Paalvast chipped in with five, while Kasey Chambers, Christina Mitchell and Danica Dragicevic had four points apiece. Sophie Beaudry rounded out the scoring with two points. HITTING THE BOARDS HARD Monmouth grabbed 48 rebounds against Yale, including 12 from Sara English, tying her career-high. Freshman Mia Hopkins was also impressive crashing the boards, grabbing five of her nine rebounds on the offensive glass in just 16 minutes. Danica Dragicevic, Christina Mitchell and Chevannah Paalvast also made strong contributions on the glass with five rebounds apiece. HAWKS FLY TO NEW NEST Monmouth University Athletics joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in all sports except football and women s bowling beginning July 1, The Hawks football team will join the Big South beginning in the 2014 season, while the women s bowling team will compete as an independent. Monmouth joins Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Rider, Saint Peter s and Siena as full members of the MAAC.

3 KEEPING TURNOVERS DOWN KEY FOR MU Monmouth was 12-4 when committing the same or fewer turnovers than the opposition last season. Meanwhile, the Hawks were 3-11 when committing more turnovers than the opposition. So far this season, Monmouth is 0-3 when committing more turnovers than its opponent. BIG INCOMING CLASS IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE Jenny Palmateer has brought in seven new players and has an eighth player who redshirted her true freshman year a season ago. But quantity isn t the only big thing about the incoming class. Led by a pair of 6-foot-4 post players in Sophie Beaudry and Christina Mitchell, the Hawks scholarshipped newcomers are on average, almost three inches taller than the graduated players they are replacing. In addition to Beaudry and Mitchell, guard/forward Jenny Horvatinovic (5-foot-11) and guards Mia Hopkins (5-foot-10), Sarah Olson (5-foot-8) and Helena Kurt (5-foot-5) enter the fold. Meanwhile, the post players the Hawks lost to graduation were 6-foot and 5-foot-10, while also losing guards at 5-foot-8, 5-foot-7 (two) and 5-foot-5. Redshirt freshman India Dotson (6-foot) and sophomore walk-on transfer Jamiyah Bethune (5- foot-8) from Penn State also add significant size to the team. RETURNING CAST With six seniors and four starters graduating, Monmouth returns only eight players who saw action last season, led by Preseason All-MAAC Third Team selection Chevannah Paalvast. The Auckland, New Zealand, native averaged 11.0 points and 4.9 rebounds in and will take on a greater leadership role this season. Senior Shira Shecht offers good size and versatility as a 6-foot forward who can step out and shoot the three-pointer. Junior Sara English was a double-double threat off the bench, scoring in double figures six times, while grabbing 10 or more rebounds on three occasions, all resulting in double-doubles. Sophomores Kasey Chambers, Danica Dragicevic and Jasmine Walker are each vying for starting roles after seeing limited minutes in reserve roles as freshmen. Senior Nikki Lentini and sophomore Amanda Offenback will also challenge for increased playing time off the bench. HAWKS FLY INTERNATLLY Monmouth will have an international feel this season, featuring players from six different countries and four continents. Europe is represented by Serbian sophomore Danica Dragicevic and Swedish freshman Helena Kurt, while New Zealander Chevannah Paalvast represents Australia. Senior Shira Shecht represents both the country of Israel and continent of Asia. 11 Americans and Canadian freshman Sophie Beaudry represent North America. A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE Then sophomore Sara English posted arguably the best game of her career with 13 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and four assists, and four blocked shots in a career-high 33 minutes against Mount St. Mary s in the Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on March 10, The double-double was the third of the season as well as English s career. DOMINANT PERFORMANCE The Hawks shot a season-high 54.7 percent (35-64) from the floor against Wagner on March 2. Included in the mark is 60.6 percent (20-33) shooting from the floor and 75.0 percent (6-8) from long range in the second half. Already leading by 14 at the half, Monmouth outscored Wagner, 32-5, to open the second half and take a commanding 41-point lead, The Hawks 85 points and 23 assists were also season highs. D.D. S DISTRIBUTION Danica Dragicevic had six points, five rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, and three assists Feb. 16 against St. Francis Brooklyn. The five rebounds and three assists represent career highs for the sophomore Serbian. DIFFERENT CASE OF THE MONDAYS Sara English has a different case of the Mondays. She posted the first two double-doubles of her career on consecutive Mondays, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. English scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds against FDU on Jan. 28, before scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds against CCSU on Feb. 4. Shooting of video and still photos is limited to the first 20 minutes of each practice unless other arrangements are made through the Athletics Communications office. The freshman floor general scored a season-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, including a three-pointer in her only attempt. She also took good care of the ball, turning it over just once in 17 minutes. EFFECTIVE IN ANY LANGUAGE Sara English compiled her first-career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 28 against FDU. English did her offensive damage on 5-of-7 shooting and did work defensively with three blocks. Perhaps her crowning achievement in the game came on a putback three-point play with 2:50 remaining in regulation to give the Hawks much-needed separation. CHEVY DRIVES STRONG IN SECOND HALF Chevannah Paalvast scored 13 of her 14 points in the second half against FDU on Jan. 28. While she struggled through an 0-for-5 showing with just one point in the first half, she made up for the drought with three blocks in the initial stanza. She then came alive with 6-of-10 shooting in the second half, including a pivotal driving bucket to put the Hawks on top for good. CHEVY: THE MOST DEPENDABLE TRUCK GUARD Down one point with 12 seconds on the clock at LIU Brooklyn on Jan. 19, the Hawks put the ball in Chevannah Paalvast s hands and spread the floor. The redshirt junior blew past her defender to the basket for the game-winning lay-up with 3.6 seconds left. FULL COURT PRESS Desperate times call for desperate measures. Down 15 points with under 14 minutes to go in the second half at LIU Brooklyn on Jan. 19, Monmouth Head Coach Jenny Palmateer put four guards on the floor and directed her team to go into a full-court press. The style forced eight straight misses over a period of four minutes and seven turnovers in just over seven minutes. The Hawks went on to defeat the Blackbirds on a last-second shot. Next time out at St. Francis Brooklyn, MU started four guards and the pressing scheme resulted in a 16-5 start to the contest, including a 16-0 run. Monmouth led by double digits for much of the game, a victory. SECOND HALF RESURGENCE Down 15 points with just over 13 minutes to go in regulation against LIU Brooklyn on Jan. 19, the Hawks turned up the defensive pressure to erase the deficit and take a dramatic victory. Monmouth forced eight straight missed field goals and three turnovers, before Cleandra Roberts made a putback at the 9:06 mark. Monmouth then forced four more turnovers and didn t allow a field goal attempt over the next four minutes. All told, Monmouth outscored LIU, 19-2, in the span of nearly nine minutes of game time. ENGLISH IMPRESSES Sara English scored a career-high 14 points, including several key buckets, against Robert Morris on Jan. 12. English did her damage on 6-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line, while also adding two blocked shots. D.D. IN DOUBLE DIGITS Redshirt-freshman forward Danica Dragicevic scored a career-high 10 points, all in a second-half comeback, on 5-of-7 shooting Nov. 25, 2012, at Lehigh. For her effort, Dragicevic was named NEC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26. Her previous career high of seven points came earlier this season at Gonzaga, while her season high in seven games played last season was just two points at Wake Forest. A LITTLE DEFENSIVE, ARE YOU? The Hawks held Lafayette without a field goal for nearly 11 minutes to start the game on Nov. 23, Monmouth held the Leopards to just 23.6 percent (13-55) shooting on the day, including just 14.3 percent (4-28) in the first half.
