6 -4 Season Highlight Last season Bethany College s women s basketball program took a step in a new direction under first year Head Coach Brett Morehouse. Although the Swedes posted an overall record of -, and a record of - within the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), Coach Morehouse feels like his program did take steps to be successful down the road. Possibly no step was as big as Bethany knocking off KCAC rival Kansas Wesleyan University in comeback fashion. The -4 season was very challenging for both the coaches and players, however, I think that we have taken a positive step forward in terms of the future of Bethany College women s basketball, said Morehouse. The Kansas Wesleyan game was definitely the highlight of our season. In addition to defeating our biggest rivals, we were able to use that night to honor our lone senior, Kendra Austin, and to also demonstrate our commitment to giving back to the community of Lindsborg. We had a great turnout for the Pink Zone Night and I was really happy that those who came to our last home game got to see our players hustle and compete for 4 minutes. I look forward to having that same energy and excitement when we play our first game in Hahn Gym next fall. When Bethany played Kansas Wesleyan on February, Coach Morehouse decided to combine his Senior Night and Alumni Night with a fundraiser for the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Play 4Kay Foundation. The Swedes raised money and donated $, to the Lindsborg Community Hospital to raise cancer awareness and prevention programs at the local level. On a night that featured a great atmosphere to play, coach, and watch a game, the women s team did not disappoint as they sent their lone senior, Kendra Austin, out of Hahn Gymnasium with a win. Sophomore guard Alex Brammer led the way for the Swedes offensively pouring a game-high points as she led Bethany past the Coyotes 8-7. After a slow start, the Swedes went on a - run and claimed an 8-7 lead midway through the first half. Kansas Wesleyan made a push to close the gap but could only pull within seven points by the break after Bethany was up by points on two separate occasions. The Swedes came out of the break strong and went up by 4 points, 4- with 6: left in the game. The Coyotes would respond however, scoring of the next 4 points pulling within four, 6-. Being up nine points the Swedes went into an offensive lull as Kansas Wesleyan would go onto score 6 of the next 8 points to take a five point lead. Bethany would not crumble and let an opportunity to slip away. Brammer would tie it up and the Swedes took a - lead on her lay-up and a free throw with just over a minute to play. The rivals would trade buckets until just under a minute to play when the senior, Austin, made a huge defensive play and came up with a steal. The next offensive possession she found Brammer who knocked down the open triple and gave the Swedes the lead for good. Brammer scored Bethany s last points as the Swedes won on senior night for the first time in five years. Rebecca Kerlikowske added ten points in seven minutes, Ashley Carey chipped in eight points and six boards, and Evin Sullivan added six points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and also had two blocks. The win also snapped a three game losing streak to Kansas Wesleyan University. The Coyotes had won of the last meetings over the Swedes. Anytime you beat a rival it is a big win, but with the series being slanted in the direction of Salina in recent years, this was a huge moment for a first year coach and the program.

9 4- Season Outlook With the weather cooling down and fall in full swing, basketball season is right around the corner. The Bethany College women s basketball team is in full force preparing for their upcoming season. Though they recorded a - overall record last season, and a ninth place finish in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference at -, there were several bright spots for the Swedes. The squad was nationally ranked 6th in the NAIA in three-point field goals made per game (6.4), 4nd in total three-point field goals made (9), and 4rd in three-point field goal percentage (.9). Bethany also capped off their home conference play with a comeback, 8-7, victory over rival Kansas Wesleyan University on Pink Zone Night and Senior/Alumni Night. Following last season, second year Head Coach Brett Morehouse hit the recruiting trail with a vengeance, bringing in high numbers and talent. Also a new addition for the program is first year Assistant Coach Rhys Pihl. With plenty of new faces on the roster providing renewed energy and depth, the Swedes are looking to improve daily and play their best basketball as the season progresses. We have about a month to go before our first game and there are a lot of great battles going on at every position to see who will earn court time, said Morehouse. We end each practice with the following words: Every day a little better. If we truly buy into that philosophy, then we will see consistent improvement throughout the season and we will be in position to continue playing basketball into late February and early March. Despite losing eight letterwinners and three starters, Bethany returns six letterwinners and two starters. Though they lost key player Kendra Austin to graduation, the Swedes feature top returners Alex Brammer and Kaitlyn Norton. Brammer, a junior guard from Dillon, Mont., started of 8 games last season, and led the team in both points per game,., and assists,. She also posted three rebounds per game. Norton, a senior guard from Yukon, Okla., averaged 4.4 points per game, two rebounds per game, and was second on the squad in assists with 47. Two additional key returners are Kristi Ohlschwager, a junior forward from Morrison, Colo., and Jyll Gamboa, a junior guard from Escondido, Calif. In -4, Ohlschwager averaged two points per game and two rebounds per game while Gamboa tallied three points per game. There are only six players left from last year, but it is a group that has remained committed to the core values of Bethany College while raising the levels of expectation for our program, both on and off the court, Morehouse explained. The Swedes roster also boasts several top newcomers. The new recruiting class is highlighted by senior guard Royce Shields, Kansas City, Kan.; junior guard Joleen Chanco, Roseville, Calif.; junior forward Taylor Arnold, Lebanon, Kan.; and sophomore guard Adriane Davis, Converse, Texas. There is a lot of talent in our 4 recruiting class, added Morehouse. Our freshmen are very competitive and have infused a lot of excitement and energy into our conditioning and practice sessions. Our transfers have provided experience and leadership and because most of them are coming from successful programs, they have high expectations for themselves and for the team as we get ready for the upcoming season. Morehouse looks to team captains Brammer, Shields, and Davis to help guide the Swedes through their 4- campaign. Our biggest challenge is that we will suit up players between junior varsity and varsity, and 7 of those players are brand new to Bethany College, said Morehouse. The time we spend together off the court is probably more valuable than the time we spend together on the court. With that said, we definitely have added talent and depth to our roster. Bethany hits the court for their alumni scrimmage on Saturday, October at p.m. The Swedes officially open their season at home on Monday, October 7 against Haskell Indian Nations University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
