UCF is the last remaining undefeated team in the conference (4-0) after beating North Florida in a mid-week matchup. OF Luke Hamblin went 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Knights. Cincinnati picked up one win in a three-game set at Northwestern State over the weekend. Senior 3B Connor McVey was the top hitter for the Bearcats, hitting.364 and posting three RBIs against the Demons. UConn started its season winning three of its first four games against UMass-Lowell. Freshman SS Anthony Prato led the way for the Huskies hitting.545, slugging.909 and posted a.706 on-base percentage in the four games. East Carolina picked up its first win of the season with a 10-0 win over Campbell. The Pirates held the Camels to two hits in the win as Chris Holba (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Houston lost its first game of the season by one run to cross-town opponent Houston Baptist (3-2). Catcher Connor Wong went 2-for-5 for the Cougars and added an RBI. Memphis went 1-2 against in-state rival Tennessee to start its season. P Drew Crosby led the Tigers to a 4-1 win over the Volunteers with a six inning outing only giving up one run. USF scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take down No. 2 Florida State. The Bulls used five pitchers to throw a combined one-hitter against the Seminoles Tulane fell to Southeastern Louisiana despite hitting four home runs in the game. OH Houston Padgett helped the Cougars to a 3-0 weekend, hitting.750 with a conferencehigh nine hits, collecting three hits in each game. The freshman went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs in an opening night win over Wake Forest. Padgett also leads the conference in on-base percentage (.800) and is tied in slugging percentage (1.000). Pitcher of the Week Seth Romero So. LHP Houston Romero guided Houston to an 8-1 opening night win over Wake Forest. Romero threw 84 pitches over six innings only allowing one run on five hits. The junior struck out 12 batters while not allowing a walk to the Demon Deacons. Honor Roll Eli Putnam Sr. OF UCF Putnam hit.462 (6-for-13) in a three-game sweep over Siena with two home runs and five RBIs. Went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in game three of the series/ Tim Cate So. LHP UConn Cate picked up his first win of the season with a careerhigh 13 strikeouts in a 5-3 win against UMass-Lowell on opening day going 7.1 innings only allowing two hits. Anthony Prato Fr. SS UConn Prato hit.545 (6-for-11) with one double, one home run and five RBIs as the Huskies went 3-1 against UMass- Lowell. Prato also had one walk in every game and five stolen bases over the weekend. Drew Crosby Jr. LHP Memphis Crosby led the Tigers to a 4-1 win over Tennessee going six innings and only giving up one earned run. The junior struck out six batters and issued only one walk. Luke Borders Sr. OF USF Borders hit.429 (6-for-14) with a team-high six RBIs in a series win over Iowa. Borders finished with three hits, a double and three RBIs in the series finale.

2 AMERICAN NOTEBOOK Introductions The American Athletic Conference completed its third season as a baseball-playing entity in The conference features eight members who play eight three-game conference series. Each team faces six teams once and one team twice during the course of conference play. Big Three Three American Athletic Conference teams were selected to the 2016 NCAA Championship. UConn won The American s automatic bid to the tournament, while Tulane and East Carolina were chosen as at-large selections. Lucky Seven Under its current, eight-team configuration, The American has had seven NCAA tournament teams in the last two seasons. The conference sent four teams to the 2015 NCAA regionals (East Carolina, Houston, USF, Tulane) and three to the 2016 touranment. Back In Business UConn made its first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2013 season, when the Huskies won the Big East s automatic bid. Pedigree Current members of the American Athletic Conference have made a combined nine appearances in the College World Series. UConn leads the conference with five appearances, while Houston and Tulane have made two appearances each. Houston was the national runner-up in The last team among The American s current membership to reach the CWS was Tulane, which advanced to Omaha in Houston and Louisville both advanced to the Super Regional round in the 2014 NCAA Championship, while East Carolina reached the Super Regionals in The American has one CWS appearances to its credit. Louisville advanced to Omaha in 2014, when the Cardinals competed in the conference. Team College World Series UConn 1957, 1959, 1965, 1972, 1979 Houston 1953, 1967 Tulane 2001, 2005 The Sum Of Its Parts The eight American Athletic Conference members have made a combined 108 appearances in the NCAA Championship, including the 2016 season s three bids. East Carolina has made 28 appearances, followed by Tulane (21), Houston (19), UConn (19) USF (11), and Cincinnati and Memphis (five each). When It Counts American Athletic Conference teams have combined to go in the NCAA tournament in its first three seasons. The American was 9-5 in the 2014 tournament, 3-8 in 2015 and went 7-6 in Superstars East Carolina made its fourth appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals. Teams from The American have won two CFP/BCS New Year s Six games in the league s first three years. Houston defeated Florida State in the 2015 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and finished No. 8 in the final national polls. UCF defeated Baylor in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl to finish the year No. 10 nationally. UConn has won four NCAA basketball titles since the formation of The American. The Huskies won the 2014 men s title and captured women s championships in 2014, 2015 and The American was one of six finalists and the only college sports entity - for the 2016 Sports Business Awards League of the Year honor, along with Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, NASCAR, the National Basketball Association and the PGA Tour. The American has produced NCAA individual champions in swimming and diving and golf, as well as the 2015 U.S. Amateur champion in men s golf. UCF takes on Manhattan in the three-game series over the weekend. Luke Hamblin leads the Knights at the plate with a.538 (7-for-13) average. Eli Putnam leads the team in home runs (2) and is tied for the team lead in RBIs (5) with Hamblin UCF broke a school-record for most runs on an opening night when the Knights scored 17 against Siena to begin the season. The Knights are a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts with Matthew Mika leading the team with four stolen bases. UConn started its season with a series win over UMass-Lowell as the Huskies took three of the four games. Sophomore P Tim Cate had a careerhigh 13 strikeouts in his first start of the season. Cate only allowed two hits over 7.1 innings. Anthony Prato leads the Huskies with a.545 average and is tied for the team lead with five RBIs with Isaac Felstein. Five players (Felstein, Prato, Zac Susi, Conor Moriarty and Chris Winkel) all hit home runs for UConn in the first weekend of the season. The Huskies travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns in a three-game series next weekend. UConn is 1-2 all-time against the Longhorns. All three meetins have come at the College World Series. (1957, 72, 79). Houston broke in to the polls earning a No. 25 ranking (D1Baseball) and a No. 29 ranking (NCBWA) after going 3-0 to start the season. The Cougars head to Corpus Chrisit, Texas to play in the Kelberg Collegiate Classic against Missouri, Illinois and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. P Seth Romero was named Pitcher of the Week after throwing 12 strikeouts in six ininngs against Wake Forest on opening night. Sophomore Grayson Padgett leads the conference with a.563 batting average. Houston moved to 20-1 all-time during Opening Weekends under head coach Todd Whitting. The Bulls begin a four-game homestand against Miami (Ohio) on Friday (Feb. 24). The Bulls and Redhawks will play a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 25) USF will play its next 17 games on its home field. USF scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a four-run deficit in game one against Iowa. Coco Montes leads the Bulls in batting average (.357), while OF Luke Borders leads USF in hits (6), and RBIs (9). P Shane McClanahan returned from injury to make his first start of the year in game three against Iowa. McClanahan went four innings and tallied nine strikeouts while only giving up one hit. The Bearcats were held to a.179 team batting average against by the Demons P Andrew Zellner was on the mound for the only win for the Bearcats in the series. The senior went 6.1 innigs only allowing one earned run and striking out six on opening day. The Bearcats travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on the College of Charleston in a three-game series set to start on Friday (Feb. 24). East Carolina was swept in a three game series against Ole Miss to start the season and fell to No. 11 in the Baseball America Poll. Junior transfer OF T.J. Riles led the Pirates with a home run and four RBIs in the win against Campbell. Three Pirates (Luke Bolka, Spencer Brickhouse and Eric Tyler) all had a team-high four hits in the series against Ole Miss. Despite picking up a loss, P Evan Kruczynski had a solid opening start going seven innings and striking out six batters while giving up three earned runs. After the road game against Campbbell, the Pirates return home for a three-game set against LaSalle over the weekend. Memphis does not have a mid-week game this week and will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 24) against Illinois State. INF Trent Turner led the Tigers with four hits over the weekned and hit Memphis's only home run against Tennessee. The Tigers set a FedEx Park attendance record for a single game (2,188 vs. Tennessee, Feb. 19) and for a three-game series (4,793). Three Tigers (Jason Santana, Colton Neel and Tyler Webb) all had three hits against the Volunteers. Tulane heads to California for a three-game series against No. 24 UC Santa Barbara. The Green Wave are led by Hunter Williams at the plate so far this season. The senior leads Tulane in average (.438), hits (7), home runs (2) and RBIs (4). P Corey Merrill earned his first win of the season throwing seven innings only giving up two earned runs and striking out four batters P J.P. Weekly Awards The American names a Player and Pitcher of the Week each Monday during the season. Winners are chosen from nominations provided by conference sports information directors. The information will be available from the conference office via release as well as on the league website. Annual Awards The American Athletic Conference will name first and second all-conference teams as well as a Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year following the conclusion of the regular season. The awards are chosen by a vote of the league s eight head coaches and will be announced May 22. Spectrum Field, which is regarded as one of the finest minor league playing and practice facilities in the nation, has hosted the American Athletic Conference Championship since the conference s formation and was home site for seven Big East Championships. Spectrum Field serves as the spring training site for the Philadelphia Phillies, and it has housed the Phillies Florida State League affiliate Clearwater Threshers since the facility opened in All eight teams will qualify for the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship, which will utilize a double-elimination format in two brackets, leading to the May 27 final, which will be a winner-take-all matchup.
