TRAINING Training will take place on a Thursday afternoon at the Waverley Basketball Stadium located at the Corner Batesford Road & Power Avenue Chadstone and the YMCA Ashburton located at Warner Ave Ashburton. Training does not occur over the holidays. Training begins each term in the first school week of term. Training will take place on Courts 5 and 6 (at the very back, right hand side of the stadium enter through the main entrance) and on the Jordanville Community Centre court located at Waverley Basketball Stadium (enter via separate entrance to the right hand side of the main Basketball Stadium entrance).

2 Training timeslots for court 5 and 6 are currently 3.50pm, 4.30pm, 5.10pm and 5.50pm. Training timeslots for lower court in Jordanville Community Centre are currently 3.50pm, 4.30pm, 5.10pm, 5.50pm. Training at YMCA will take place on the courts at the back of the centre behind the pool. The club adopts a train and play policy. If your child cannot make training please see the relevant section below. Parents are required to make sure that their child makes it safely to their training court for the beginning of training and to make sure that their child is picked up from their training court promptly at the end of their training time. The Stadium carpark can get busy and parents are asked to meet their children at their training court for pick up not wait for them in the carpark. What to bring to training? Players are required to be dressed in appropriate attire for training (eg school sports uniform, shorts and T-shirt) and to wear appropriate footwear (eg runners/joggers, NO SCHOOL SHOES). Players are to bring a water bottle and basketball to each training session. Mouth guards are optional. What if I can t make training or a game? Parents are required to ring or message their coach or team manager ASAP if their child cannot train or play. Team Managers will pass the message to the coach. If you know well in advance that your child cannot make a training session or a game, please speak with your coach. Where do I park? The Waverley Basketball Stadium carpark (Enter off Power Avenue) OR the Jordanville Community Centre Carpark (Enter off Batesford Road). At YMCA Ashburton, in the large carpark in front. 3. GAME DAY Please arrive at your game court at least 10 minutes before the start of your scheduled game. Players should stretch as required. Players should be in their Scorpions uniform with appropriate footwear. Designated basketball runners or cross trainers are recommended. Players are to bring a full water bottle to each match. Mouth guards and basketballs are optional. Many players like to wear their Scorpions T-Shirt or Hoodie over their playing singlet to the game and to warm up in. Please make sure these are labelled with the players name. Players are to sit with their coach during the match. Players and coach sit next to the score bench. Water bottles should be placed here at the beginning of the match. Parents are advised that they should sit with the parents of their child s team mates so that they can give maximum support to the players. Parents are asked to sit away from the player s bench (which is next to the scoring bench). Parents and players are asked to read and be familiar with Codes of Conduct as outlined by Basketball Victoria. Please see website

3 Fixture Team fixtures can be found on the Waverley Basketball website. Occasionally, minor changes to game times and possibly venue will be made due to unforseen circumstances. It is the players responsibility to check their fixture the day before game day to ensure that changes have not been made. Where to park? The Waverley Basketball Stadium carpark (Enter off Power Avenue) OR the Jordanville Community Centre Carpark (Enter off Batesford Road). Game day carparking is very busy, please be patient and allow enough time to find a car park. Cost to enter stadium? Waverley Basketball Stadium charge a $2 entry fee per player and adult. Location of Games Waverley Basketball Stadium, Corner Batesford Road & Power Avenue Chadstone. On the fixture this is represented as WAV and the court number next to it. Eg WAV5 is Waverley Basketball Stadiuim Court 5. There are 6 courts at Waverley. Court 4 is downstairs. Some games are played at Wattle Park Primary School. Location is 225 Warrigal Road Burwood Corner of Warrigal Road and Banksia Street. On the fixture this will say WP1. Parking is available at the back of Wattle Park Primary School with the entrance to this car park available off Somers Street. Due to the volume of teams this season some games will be played at additional venues. Please keep an eye out for these. At this stage we believe that some games may be played at Penpraze Park which is located at Tooronga Rd, Malvern adjoining Malvern Primary School. This would be listed as PP1 on the fixture. Scoring One parent from each team is expected to score each game. The team manager will develop a roster system. The scoreboard is digital. Information on how to use the scoreboard can be found on the Waverley Basketball website. Please look under Junior domestic competition. The scorer does have a responsible role of making sure that all players are listed as being present and if there is a fill in player that their name is spelt correctly and the DOB is recorded. This is often required for final qualification purposes. If there is a dispute with a score during the game it is the scorer from our team who must be confident that the score if correct. If at any time there is a debate over the score, during the game. Please alert the referee to the error. Changes CANNOT be made after the game. 4. THE COMPETITION Waverley Basketball Junior Competition is conducted two seasons per year. Our Summer Season runs from October to March during school terms four and one, breaking over the Christmas and New Years, and our Winter Season runs from March to October during school terms two and three. The competition consists of boys and girls teams from under 8 to under 18 age groups. Junior games commence from 8.00am Saturday mornings beginning with the younger age groups and continue through to late Saturday afternoons for the older age group teams. Each season begins with 5-6 games of grading. This ensures that teams are graded with like ability teams. After the final grading game, grades are set and the season begins.

4 For U8 teams there are no finals. At the conclusion of the season, the U8 teams play one extra game. At the conclusion of this game they are presented with a participation trophy from the Waverley Basketball Association. For U10-U18 teams there are finals. At the conclusion of the season a semi-final, knock out round will take place. Games are decided based on final positions on the ladder. Normally 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. The winner of these 2 matches will play in the Grand Final in the final week of competition. Trophy s will be presented to Premiership and runners-up players at the conclusion of their Grand Final. Timing Each game will have 2 x 18 minutes halves. There is a max of 1 time out per half. There can be no timeouts in the last minute of the first half. The clock will stop for all referee whistles in the last 2 minutes of the second half. Waverley Heat Policy When the outside temperature reaches 35ºC, each team may have 2 time outs per half. One compulsory timeout must occur per half. The referees will call this as close to 9 minutes into the half as possible. Scorpions Heat Recommendations Training will be cancelled if the outside temperature reaches 36ºC or greater by the Bureau of Meteorology. As a club we state that if the outside temperature is below 36ºC and above 28ºC coaches are to modify training to passing, shooting and more stationary drills. In a 40 minute training session there should be a 2 minute break for the players every 10 minutes. Players should be allowed to take a sip of water as often as they like. From Basketball Victoria: players are advised to drink about 500ml (2 cups) of water in the 2 hours before exercising. During exercise lasting 60 minutes or longer, ml (2-3 cups) of fluids per hour should be sufficient to prevent dehydration. Constant sipping is also advised. We also advise spectators and coaches to bring water bottles. Symptoms of heat illness or stress may include: light headedness, dizziness nausea, obvious fatigue cessation of sweating obvious loss of skill and coordination/clumsiness or unsteadiness confusion aggressive or irrational behaviour altered consciousness collapse ashen grey pale skin If the athlete is seriously ill, confused, vomiting or shows signs of altered consciousness call ambulance immediately and seek medical help. If a sports participant is exhibiting signs of heat illness take the following immediate action: remove from the court lay the person down in a cool place raise legs and pelvis to improve blood pressure get individual to remove excess clothing cool by wetting skin liberally and vigorous fanning (evaporative cooling) apply ice packs to armpits and neck give cool water if conscious

5 Junior Mercy Rule Un U8, U10 and U12s. If a team reaches a 15 point lead then they cannot play full court defence. The defence must retreat back to the 3 point line of their defensive end. Qualification for finals A player must play at least 8 games to qualify for the finals. Zone defence rule In U8, U10 and U12 competition. During the first half, both teams must play Man to Man defence (unless the mercy rule applies). In the second half either team can adopt whichever defence they choose. 5. SCORPIONS PRESENTATION DAY At the conclusion of the season the club will hold a Club Presentation Day. This will be a chance for the club to celebrate the previous season.
