11 Wolfpack Training for Peak Performance The Women s Tennis Program at NC State focuses on three main objectives throughout the season: player development, a family and team atmosphere, and academics. In his four seasons with the Wolfpack, coach Hans Olsen has succeeded on each level. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT The Wolfpack program features world-class training, designed to help players develop and obtain their professional tennis goals. At NC State, players gain valuable exposure with WTA tour events, as well as elite level collegiate tournaments. Coach Olsen is one of the few collegiate coaches to obtain the highest level of certification offered by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). As a USTA high-performance coach, coach Olsen consults with the USTA on pro-tour level player development. In developing a player to her full potential, the Wolfpack coaches and training staff push the student-athlete to a new level in which she has the physical ability and confidence to succeed at a high arena of competition. The process begins with mental training, which allows a competitor to have an advantage on the court in pressured situations. On-court development is key to the program, and is aided by special one-on-one hitting sessions in which Coach Olsen and Coach DuBois focus on the individual, specific needs. Finally Wright Wayne, the team s strength and conditioning coach, aids with core strength training, agility and explosiveness on the court. WTA tour exposure World-class training Individual training sessions Sports psychology training Peak performance fitness PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENT Proper strength and conditioning is a key to success on the fields of play for all collegiate athletes, and at NC State each athlete is provided an opportunity to build themself through the Wolfpack s outstanding physical improvement program. All the facilities needed by the Wolfpack tennis program are available in the recently expanded Reynolds Coliseum Weight Room Facility. Wright Wayne, the Pack s strength and conditioning advisor, is there to provide superior training and guidance to the entire team. TEAM & FAMILY ATMOSPHERE Each member of the women s tennis team depends on one another for support throughout the season while in training and in the classroom. The team spends much of its free time together, whether it be in the Case Dining Hall for a meal, in an apartment watching a movie for the evening, or at the mall on the weekend. Coach Olsen and Coach DuBois feel that for one to play at their best, they must be in a friendly, supportive environment; like that of the Wolfpack Family. Wolfpack Training Care starts with the facilities, and with 23 varsity athletic teams at NC State, the school has a pair of fully equipped training rooms, one in Reynolds Coliseum and one at the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Facility. The Reynolds Coliseum training room, where the women s tennis team is treated, is located on the ground floor of the coliseum, allowing athletes easy access to the facility at all times. The Wolfpack is assisted by a host of healthcare professionals in the Raleigh community, providing state-of-the-art care in prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. This readily available task force includes physicians, orthopedic consultants and chiropractic consultant. SPORTS MEDICINE Under the direction of Charlie Rozanski, few programs play a role as essential to the continued success of NC State athletics as sports medicine. It provides preventive care that helps athletes avoid injuries, and post-injury treatment that enables athletes to fully recover as soon as possible. 11

Renovation of the existing stadium seating will open up spectator seating to over 1,000. The indoor lighting system has also been designed with the player s interests and comfort in mind. The facility has state-of-the-art lighting that uses diffuse lighting and reduces glare. The indoor facility contains four courts. Having an indoor tennis facility is an instrumental part in any successful tennis program. Opening up on-campus, year-round facilities for practice use is very beneficial to the tennis family at NC State. Championship seating for 200 people will provide spectators a great view in all weather conditions. In addition, the complex provides lockerrooms for men and women, coaches offices and a luxurious players lounge complete with plush couches and a large flat-screen television. In September 2004, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) honored the newly opened facility with the organization s 2004 Outstanding Facility award. One of only four collegiate complexes to receive the honor, the home of Wolfpack tennis finds itself among some top rate playing areas, as only 15 of the nation s facilities collect the prestigious honor. The facility is named in honor of J.W. Isenhour, a former head coach of NC State men s tennis from Isenhour also led 14
