3 Dave PEZZINO Head Coach 11th season As UConn men s golf coach Dave Pezzino enters his 11th season at the helm of the program, he has left himself a tough act to follow --- again. Two years ago in , all Pezzino did was guide the Huskies to the finest season of his tenure up to that point with two tournament victories in the same season for the first time, seven Top 10 finishes in 11 events, and honors as New England Division I Team and Coach of the Year. So, what did he do for an encore in ? Simply take the Huskies to three tournament wins and eight finishes in the Top 5 in 11 events. He had two players selected All-Conference, three selected All-New England, and two picked All-Northeast Region. In addition, the Huskies picked up their annual array of academic awards, with six players named to the American Conference All-Academic Team, and the team earning a 12th consecutive NCAA Public Recognition Award (given each year to teams with an APR in the top 10 percent of their respective sports), as well as status as a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team. The three tourney victories at the Loyola Intercollegiate, the Lafayette Collegiate Invitational, and UConn s own VGA/UConn Collegiate Invitational -- hiked Pezzino s total to 10 at UConn. Individually, sophomore Jimmy Hervol became the seventh UConn player under Pezzino to win a tournament when he captured the season-opening Doc Gimmler Invitational. The Huskies combined for 18 individual Top 10 finishes. Such has been the case during Pezzino s decade at UConn, with the program showing solid and steady growth both athletically and academically, as well as experiencing a significant upgrade in the level of competition and the quality of courses played throughout the country. In , UConn will take another step forward, competing in the Ka anapali Classic in Hawaii and in the prestigious Clemson Invitational. I have tried to challenge our team with the schedule and I think it has really paid off for us, Pezzino said. By playing tough competition and great layouts, our squad learns how to compete and, more importantly, learns how to win. Under Pezzino, who took over the program on Aug. 24, 2007, UConn has had 43 players named Conference Academic All-Stars (24 Big East, 19 American Athletic), three Big East and three American All-Conference picks, 11 All-Northeast Region selections, 11 All-New England picks, and a New England All-Rookie Team selection. Pezzino also guided the Huskies to an outstanding season in , as the team had Top 10 finishes in eight of the 10 regular-season tournaments, five of them in the Top 5. The season was highlighted by a second consecutive victory in UConn s own Connecticut Cup, second-place finishes in both the FAU Slomin Autism Championship and the Til Duty Is Done Collegiate Invitational, and third-place finishes in both the Hartford Hawks Invitational and the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge. Pezzino s squad had an excellent season, recording Top 10 finishes in all 11 of its regular-season tournaments, six of them in the Top 5, including a team title in The Connecticut Cup. In , Pezzino nutured a young squad to nine Top 10 finishes in 12 tournaments, four of them in the Top 5, including a team title in the New England D-I Championships. The fall of 2009 saw the Huskies capture the New England Championship, the first title under Pezzino. Jeb Buchanan also became the first individual medalist under Coach Pezzino when he won the Adams Cup of Newport by shooting three successive scores of 69. He was also named the Golfweek Magazine National Player of the Week. UConn finished sixth in the team competition against a standout field at the Adams Cup, despite having only four players for the final two rounds due to injury. In the Fall of 2011, Pezzino and the Huskies captured another tournament title, winning the Hartford Hawks Invitational by eight strokes as Buchanan won individual medalist honors. That victory was the start of an outstanding three-tourney stretch that saw the Huskies finish third at The Connecticut Cup and second at The Classic at Shelter Harbor. Pezzino came to UConn after spending one year as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois and 11 previous seasons as a head coach at the collegiate level. Pezzino spent seven years, from August of 1999 to May of 2006, at Florida International as the head coach of the women s golf program. He led FIU to four tournament victories and 10 individual titles during his tenure and coached 10 All-Sun Belt Conference selections, including 2001 NGCA All-American Michelle Simpson. He had three student-athletes earn Academic All-American recognition and five former team members that are currently playing professionally. During his time at Florida International, Pezzino also worked at the Jim McLean Golf School at Doral Golf Resort, one of the premier golf teaching facilities in the world. He earned the status of master instructor, one of few instructors in the country to reach that level for McLean. Pezzino played his collegiate golf at St. Thomas University in Miami, where he became a student-head coach during his senior year of Upon graduation, he continued to serve as the head men s coach at St. Thomas until August, He led St. Thomas to consecutive NAIA National Championship appearances in 1998 and 1999, and was named Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year in 98, leading the squad to the conference title. He coached six individuals to all-conference honors during his tenure. Pezzino has worked with three of Golf Digest s Top 100 Instructors, and eight of his former student-athletes are golf professionals on various tours. Pezzino was born on 3/22/72 in North Haven, Conn. He attended Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale, N.J., while living in Mahwah, N.J. He earned his bachelor s degree in sports administration from St. Thomas in Dave and his wife, Kristy, were married in They are the parents of two sets of twins: Joseph and Matthew, born 2/26/04, and Daniel and Kaitlin, born 4/23/

4 Huskies Face The Challenge Of Program s Success There is good news and challenging news when it comes to the UConn golf program. The good news is that the success of the past few years has clearly raised the entire program to a higher level. The challenging news is the difficulty for a young team like the Huskies to live up to the higher expectations that come with the status. UConn has compiled a remarkable 15 Top Five finishes and five tournament championships in the last two years, including three titles and eight Top Fives in The current group of Huskies, which includes just one senior, has grown up at UConn in a culture of success as the norm. I m really excited about how the competitiveness of the whole group has improved, head coach Dave Pezzino said. Qualifying has become more and more difficult and the level of golf has really been on the rise for a while. Scores in the past that would get you onto a road trip most certainly aren t the same as they used to be it s much more difficult. Leading the Huskies are a pair of junior co-captains, Jimmy Hervol and Nabeel Khan. Hervol was the leading scorer for the Huskies last year, won the seasonopening tournament and earned seven Top 10 Finishes. Khan, the second-leading returning scorer for the Huskies behind Hervol, turned in a solid season in with three Top 10 Finishes, as well as a postsesason national tournament title in the 2017 Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. They are two guys who lead by example with their work ethic and carrying their qualifying performances into tournaments, Pezzino said. Jimmy and Nabeel are the kind of student-athletes that we want to represent our program. They ve done a great job tutoring the younger guys. The lone senior on the Huskies, Sasha Wortelboer, as well as juniors Nick Harrington and Blake Kelley, will provide plenty of support for the co-captains, along with sophomores Tim Umphrey, Chandler Morris, and redshirt sophomore Zach Iannone, who each gained some valuable tournament experience last year. Newcomers who figure to make an immediate impact on the team include redshirt sophomore Drake Hull, who transferred from the University of Kansas, and talented freshmen Rodrigo Sanchez, Jack Boulger and Finn Boynton. The 12-man roster will tackle one of the most demanding schedules in UConn golf history, taking the team to places like Maui, Hawaii, for the Ka anapali Classic, and South Carolina for the prestigious Clemson Invitational. We have a level of confidence now when we get to a tournament and I hope that will only continue to get stronger, Pezzino said. The schedule is going to continue to get tougher. It s an exciting time. We ve played a national schedule before, but nothing like this year. It takes us to the kind of fields that see late-may golf (NCAA competition), which is what our focus is practicing and playing with a focus on late-may golf. As the Huskies face the challenge of continuing UConn s success, they will simultaneously be helping the program grow. The bar has been raised, the expectation level of what we re doing has been raised, Pezzino said. When you have guys who are qualifying for PGA Tour events and six graduates who have status on the developmental tours of the PGA Tour, that seriously raises the profile of the program. You can come to UConn and you can know that you can have an opportunity to play at the next level, to perhaps play on the PGA Tour someday. That s an exciting aspect for us, and an exciting aspect for our guys

Wortmann is the author of five books, two of which have been bestsellers in 10 categories, including communication, leadership, and stress management. He also works with professional golfers, three of whom have earned PGA Latin America status, and they collectively have six victories. Wortmann works with UConn coach Dave Pezzino to help the UConn players develop the mental strength necessary to improve in all phases of the game. He puts emphasis on the decision-making process the players use to become singularly focused on doing one thing at a time. Once each individual discovers how he can focus on the task at hand, blocking out distractions, the stress level is reduced, and the results are improved scores and better consistency. 21 For the UConn golf team, the season was a continuation of the remarkable success that the Huskies have enjoyed under Coach Dave Pezzino. After winning two tournaments in the same season for the first time under Pezzino , the Huskies won three in , part of a tremendous run that saw the Huskies notch eight Top Five Finishes in 11 events. The wins upped the total to 10 tourney titles under Pezzino, who took over as head coach in Augurst, The season also included another individual championship for UConn as sophomore Jimmy Hervol won the season-opening Doc Gimmler Invitational. A highlight for the program occurred in June, when 2016 UConn grad Zach Zaback, arguably the finest UConn player under Pezzino, quaified to play in the PGA Tour s Travelers Championship at TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell. The Huskies won two tournaments in the first time that had happened under Pezzino -- the Hartford Hawks Invitational in the fall and their own Til Duty Is Done Collegiate Invitational in the spring. They were among seven Top Five finishes in 11 events, which also included two second-place finishes. The season also featured another first-time UConn individual medalist as junior Eric Dietrich won the Til Duty Is Done Collegiate Invitational with a course-record 64 in the final round. It was also the final season for a quartet of four-year players, including Zaback, who finished with three tournament victories, 15 Top 10 finishes and a career average of 73.9 per round. That season followed another solid season in The Huskies captured another tournament victory when they JEB BUCHANAN successfully defended their Connecticut Cup championship. Senior Chris Wiatr won medalist honors, the first win of his college career. In the season, the Huskies finished among the Top 10 in all 11 of their regular-season tournaments, including a win at The Connecticut Cup, and a second at the New England Division I Championships. In , with a young team that included five freshmen, the Huskies produced nine Top 10 finishes, four of them in the Top 5, and captured a team title at the New England D-I Championships. The season was also highlighted by two individual medalist performances by then-freshman Zaback, at The Connecticut Cup where he and sophomore teammate Wiatr finished 1-2, and at the New England D-I Championships. UConn s upswing under Pezzino showed immediately in the fall of 2007, with three team Top 5 finishes, including a second-place finish at the New England Championship. The Fall of 2009 saw the Huskies capture the New England Championship, the first title under Pezzino. Jeb Buchanan also became the first individual medalist under Pezzino when he won the Adams Cup of Newport by shooting three successive scores of 69, earning him recognition as Golfweek Magazine National Player of the Week. In the fall of 2011, Pezzino guided the Huskies to a first-place finish in the 17-team Hartford Hawks Invitational, as Buchanan again captured individual medalist honors, winning a four-man playoff. UConn followed that with a third-place finish at The Connecticut Cup, and a second place in The Classic at Shelter Harbor. Pezzino took the reins of the the Husky golf program from Ron Dubois, who had been the coach since August, The former U.S. Army colonel continued the excellence that had marked Connecticut golf for over half a century. The Huskies captured team titles in ZACH ZABACK three of his five seasons, including the 2004 fall New England Championship. Under the tutelage of Dubois, Jason Parajeckas left his mark as one of the top golfers in Husky history. He was the No. 1-ranked golfer in the New England region and among the top 80 golfers nationally. For his career, Jason was a five-time individual champion. He appeared in 38 career events and recorded Top 10 finishes in 18 of those events. He was a three-time New England Intercollegiate Golf Association First Team selection, a two-time New England Division I First Team honoree and also a two-time honoree by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Many of the great accomplishments of the program, including New England and Big East Championships, came under coach Joe Giannelli, who earned several Coach of the Year honors in his 20 years as head coach from After retiring in the summer of 2000, Giannelli remained with the team as Coach Emeritus until his death on December 9, 2002, after a valiant fight against cancer. Giannelli had served as president of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association. UConn men s golf has developed into one of the top programs in New England since its beginning as a varsity sport in For the first four decades, Connecticut participated as a member of the Yankee Conference, winning 12 championships. The Huskies then joined the Big East Conference as a charter member in 1979 and since has been a member of the powerful American Athletic Conference. The Huskies proud tradition of golf success has been highlighted by both team and individual honors. The , , and UConn squads competed in the NCAA East Regional Championships. The 1980 UConn golf team won the New England title and participated in the NCAA Championship tournament while the 1982, 1993, 1994 and 1997 squads won New England Intercollegiate Golf Championships. Individual Husky stars who have qualified for the NCAA Championship include: Mike Caprio (1984), Tim Heaney (1987), and Rich Pepin (1992). Caprio also received Academic All-American honors in his senior year while Greg Metro (1998) joined him as an Academic All-American. The Huskies captured the 1994 Big East title, paced by captain Greg Yeomans, an All-New England selection in In , the Huskies were ranked second in the region throughout the year after capturing two team titles and four runner-up titles over the course of both seasons. In the spring of 1993, UConn captured the New England title. In the fall of 1993, the Huskies were crowned the ECAC Champions. UConn followed this title with its first-ever Big East Conference Golf Championship in September of 1994 and UConn also shared the 1994 New England Championship

22 STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS PROGRAM The University of Connecticut is committed to each golfer, and all of its student-athletes, and their holistic development during their undergraduate career. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. The University s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised --- indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that the golf team and all student-athletes, due to their athletic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their personal time to University-sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Student-Athlete Succes Program (SASP) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The SASP staff serves as a liaison between the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete. In serving as a liaison between the UConn student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the SASP counselors also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available within the University. These include orientation for student-athletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tutorial centers (an English/Writing Center, Math Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars. With the advent of everchanging technology, all of the SASP computer labs have been updated with new equipment and allow students to access the world wide web as well as the Homer Babbidge Library database that connects them to literally millions of the most recent scholarly research journals available. Last season ( ), for the second time in three years, UConn was honored as a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team and for the 10th consecutive year, UConn received an Academic Public Recognition Award from the NCAA, signifying and Academic Progress Rate among the top 10 percent nationally in its sport. 23 Longtime donor David Marks and his wife, Dr. Ann Sagalyn-Marks, have established themselves as leaders in the support of the UConn s men s golf program. They are avid golfers and their affection for the sport dates back many years. Their generosity has assisted the golf program in enhancing opportunities provided to its studentathletes. The Marks family has actively supported UConn Athletics for more than 29 years. In addition to the ongoing support for golf, the family has also shown its commitment to education through contributions to The Marks Family Scholarship Fund, which benefits student-athletes in the women s basketball program. As annual season ticket holders for men s and women s basketball, David and Ann are frequently seen at games cheering on the Huskies. David received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 and his Master of Business Administration in 1971 from the University of Connecticut. His outstanding career has featured a number of prestigious positions within the investment industry. David was named to the UConn School of Business Hall of Fame in This naming opportunity of the golf practice and teaching center is a fitting reflection of David s and Ann s continuing commitment to the student-athletes who represent the University of Connecticut, particularly those who participate in the men s golf program. UConn golfers have total access to their redesigned indoor facilities on the Storrs campus. The David Marks and Dr. Ann Sagalyn-Marks Golf Practice and Teaching Center in Gampel Pavilion features a 30-foot pitching area, a putting The David Marks and Dr. Ann Sagalyn-Marks Golf Practice & Teaching Center surface with multiple hole locations which facilitates various putting drills, a swing development booth with video swing analysis, individual lockers for each member of the team and a lounge and study area for the team with a 50 plasma television. The Full Swing Golf Simulator in the facility is the leading golf simulator on the market. Full Swing s dual infrared ball tracking sytem has revolutionized the way golf simulators are measured. With a variety of simulated fairway, rough and sand lies at numerous golf courses around the world, the combination of ball speed, launch angle and real-time continuous visual ball flight makes the Full Swing experience a vital practice tool
