2 Congratulations, you have achieved a great accomplishment of being one of the Atlantic university teams qualifying for the 2015 SUBWAY AUS CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP, which will be held at the Montague Curling Club in Prince Edward Island from February 13-15, There are many things you will need to be concerned with between now and the 2015 SUBWAY AUS CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP and this guide has been prepared to answer many of the questions you may have. Your team is responsible for your own accommodations. Their website address is: The host committee has arranged a room rate of $109. There are 6 two- bedroom and 2 three- bedroom cottages. There are also 30 rooms in the hotel. Phone Reservations: Please reference the Montague Curling Club for this rate. Tickets The Montague Curling Club is not charging an admission fee for this championship. Page 2 of 7
3 Schedule of Events 2015 SUBWAY AUS CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Montague Curling Club, PEI February 13-15, 2015 * The schedule will be confirmed once the number of teams has been declared. There will be a round robin and then playoff games to decide the #1 and #2 teams for each gender that will represent the AUS at the CIS Championship. Draw times may vary slightly. Date/Time Friday, February 13th 2:30-5:30 pm Pre- competition practice ice for all teams Registration all athletes must provide a valid government or university issued photo ID before competing 5:45 pm Team meeting with Head Umpire athletes and coaches 6:00 pm Opening Ceremonies 7:00 pm Draw #1 9:30 pm Team Social at the Montague Curling Club Saturday, February 14th 9:00 am Draw #2 1:00 pm Draw #3 6:00 pm Draw #4 Sunday, February 15th 9:00 am Semi- finals 1:00 pm Championship Finals 3:30 pm Prize Presentations & Closing Ceremonies Team Registration Pre- event registration for each university team is due by January 13th, One male team and one female team can represent each Atlantic university. Registration consists of filling out pages 13 and 14 in the CIS- CCA Competitors Guide and ed to curlatlantic2001@gmail.com. The athletes, coach and Athletic Director must fill out the application form and waiver of eligibility form in full for each team. In addition to the two forms, each team will need to send in an entry fee of $200 in order to compete in the 2015 Subway AUS Curling Championship. Cheques can be made payable to Curl Atlantic or an e- transfer can be ed to curlatlantic2001@gmail.com. Cheques can be mailed to: Curl Atlantic, 2777 Doug Smith Drive, Halifax, NS, B3L 3T6. At the AUS event in February, teams will be required to register at the Montague Curling Club either during your pre- event practice time or prior to the Team Meeting with the Head Umpire on Friday, Page 3 of 7
4 February 13 th. All athletes must provide a valid government or university issued photo ID before competing. Pre- Competition Practice The pre- competition practice will be held on Friday, February 13 th from 2:30-5:30pm as follows: 2:30 pm 3:30 pm 4:30 pm Ice 1 Ice 2 Ice 3 Ice 4 Each team will practice for 12 minutes on each sheet and then will rotate to the right. Practice times will be determined after the registration deadline of January 13 th. Teams traveling the farthest distance will have first choice of pre- competition practice times. Team Meeting All players and the recognized coaches are asked to attend the Team Meeting with the Head Umpire. At this time, any questions your team may have on the officiating or rule interpretation will be discussed. The team meeting will take place at 5:45pm on Friday, February 13 th at the Montague Curling Club. Opening Ceremonies & Team Social The Opening Ceremonies will be held on Friday, February 13th at 6pm at the Montague Curling Club. Details will be provided to all teams during the Team Meeting with the Head Umpire. A Team Social will be held at 9:30pm following the evening draw on Friday, February 13th. Closing Ceremonies The Closing Ceremonies will take place immediately following the championship game. The winner and runner- up are the only teams required to attend. Further information about the closing ceremonies will be provided just prior to the playoffs beginning. All players are encouraged to attend the closing ceremonies. Page 4 of 7
5 Mandatory Functions There are three (3) mandatory functions at the 2015 Subway AUS Curling Championship at the Montague Curling Club in PEI: 1. Team Meeting with the Head Umpire Friday, February 13 th at 5:45pm 2. Opening Ceremonies - Friday, February 13 th at 6:00pm 3. Team Social Friday, February 13 th at 9:30pm As a reminder, teams are required to have at least 3 members of the team present for the duration of all mandatory functions. Competition Format Competitors & Coaches 1. Eligibility of athletes will follow the CIS rules stated on page 4 of the CIS- CCA University Championship Competitors Guide Academic: Be a student who is officially registered and in good standing, pursuing a full- time course of study at a CIS member university. Full- time status must be confirmed on the entry form by signature by the athletic director of the institution. (Full- time as defined in CIS policies and ) Athletic: Be a member of the recognized university curling team, as approved by signature of the athletic director of the institution Citizenship: Be a Canadian citizen with a birth date between January 2nd, 1988 and January 1, 1998 inclusive. Note: This only applies to individuals representing Canada at the FISU Games. Student- athletes at the CIS/CCA Championship born before January 2, 1987, must meet above to participate in the championship Maximum Years: A student will have a maximum of five (5) years of eligibility. Prior to the season, a year of eligibility was considered to have been used if the student participated in the CIS/CCA National University Championships. However, from the season forward, participation in regional playdowns leading to the CIS/CCA National University Championships, is also considered to count as year of eligibility. 2. For the AUS, each team must have a coach who is at least Competition Coach Trained (or old Level I certified) that is 21 years of age or older. If your team qualifies for the CIS, then your coach must be a minimum of Competition Coach Certified to join your team at the CIS- CCA University Championship. 3. Each team will consist of 4 players and one coach. Teams may be permitted a 5 th player if that player is included on the eligibility and waiver forms signed by the university s Athletic Director. There will be no spare pool. Games may be played with no less than three players. Page 5 of 7
6 Competition Format 1. The format will be a round robin, followed by a semi- final and championship game. To determine first, second and third place, teams will be ranked by win/loss record first, then if needed, through the pre- game accumulative draw shot distance to the button throughout the round robin. The team that finishes first after the round robin will have the bye to the final and the second and third place teams will play in the semi- final with the winner advancing to play the first place team for the AUS championship banner. Both teams in the final game will represent the AUS at the CIS Championship in March. 2. A coin flip 35 minutes prior to each game will determine either rock colour or first or second pre- game practice. Last rock will be determined by a draw to the button with any athlete being able to throw the draw. 3. Championship game will be 1 st place versus the winner of the semi- final (sudden death) 4. A Head Umpire will be used to monitor the rules of the Championship. The Head Umpire will a detailed list of rules at least two weeks prior to the event. 5. Canadian Curling Association rules apply Game Duration 1. All games will be 10 ends in duration and a 5 th end break will be held to clean the ice - maximum of 5 minutes 2. An extra end will be held when teams are tied after regulation play. A two- minute break will be allowed before the start of the extra end. 3. Time clocks may be used 4. Practices will be held 20 minutes before game time. Each team gets a 10- minute practice. Timeouts 1. Each team is allowed to call two (2) ninety- second timeouts during the game. These timeouts must be called from the playing surface by the team but a coach may signal their team with the Timeout sign (T). No tapping on the glass. 2. Both coaches are allowed to confer with their teams during a timeout but shall not access the playing surface. 3. In an extra end, each team will be allowed one timeout. Page 6 of 7
7 Uniforms Each team will be required to wear their matching on- ice outfits at all times when they are entering the ice area, including the opening and closing ceremonies, pre- competition practice and pre- game practice. Teams must wear matching on ice uniforms that correspond with their school colours. Sponsorship cresting on uniforms must be cleared with the both the AUS and Curl Atlantic prior to arriving in Montague, PEI. The Team Social will be casual dress. Code of Conduct The AUS will follow the same rules as the CIS competition. Curling is based on a code of ethics, good sportsmanship and personal integrity. You are expected to follow this tradition and the rules of the game throughout the competition. Alcohol will not be available at the curling venue for any student/athlete or coach until the completion of their final draw of the day or until the team has completed the competition. The Head Umpire shall suspend student/athletes or coaches contravening this rule immediately and for the duration of the event. Page 7 of 7
