2 FOOTBALL FACILITIES The nation s best student-athletes meet, practice and train in the Hecht Athletic Center. The Miami football complex features state-of-theart meeting and planning rooms, including three large team meeting rooms and eight position group meeting rooms. These rooms are fully equipped with the latest video scouting technology, enabling Hurricane football players to prepare in the best setting available. The football practice fields are part of the Hecht Athletic Center. The Greentree Practice Fields consist of three full length natural grass fields and are lighted to allow for evening practices. Greentree underwent a $2 million renovation in In 2007, the practice fields were selected College Football Field of the Year by SportsTurf Managers Association. The Hecht Athletic Center underwent an $8 million expansion in 2001, a project that also added a players lounge and an outdoor terrace overlooking Greentree Practice Fields; an expansion to the football equipment room; a new office suite for the head coach; locker rooms for women s track, soccer and men s track; and an Olympic sports equipment room. The Edgerrin James Team Meeting Room underwent renovations in MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS The University of Miami began The Sprint for Hurricane Athletics campaign in 2007 with a goal of raising more than $70 million to improve and construct new athletic facilities, grow the Hurricane Club Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund and strengthen the Athletic Department endowment. Included in the campaign is a $25 million goal to improve the football facilities, renovate the training room and build a new academic building. The first stage of construction and renovation on the football offices in the Hecht Athletic Center has been completed. Coaches offices, conference rooms and team meeting rooms were re-designed, and new offices for the Football Operations and Football Relations departments were also built and furnished. The next renovation project will include the football locker room and a $5 million upgrade to the training room. One of the most important facility projects to be undertaken by the Athletic Department is the construction of a four-story Academic Building, including a renovated space for the Tom Kearns Hall of Fame. The new building will be a space for student-athletes to pursue their academic dreams and will house computer laboratories, a math and writing center, private study cubicles, study meeting rooms and office space for the academic staff. The generosity of former football student-athletes and friends of the program has provided funding for the Athletic Department to establish an environment which develops champions n and off the field. 25

4 Four Fingers It s all about the U Band of the Hour Touchdown Tommy HURRICANE TRADITIONS THE HURRICANES It began in controversy. Some reports say the players on the 1927 football team held a team meeting to select Hurricanes, hoping they would sweep away opponents just as the devastating storm did on September 16, Another version holds that Jack Bell, a columnist for the old Miami News, asked end Porter Norris of the 1926 team what the team should be called. Told that the local dignitaries and University officials wanted to name the team for a local flora or fauna, Norris said the players wouldn t stand for it and suggested Hurricanes since the opening game had been postponed by such a storm. ORANGE, GREEN AND WHITE UM s school colors were selected in The colors of the Florida orange tree represent UM. Orange symbolizes the fruit of the tree, green represents the leaves and white, the blossoms. THE U In 1973, UM s Athletic Federation, the fund-raising arm of the athletic department at the time, commissioned a local public relations expert to develop a distinctive logo. The University had gone several years with a variety of helmet and uniform changes and the Federation noted that a number of major colleges have the initials UM. Miami designer Bill Bodenhamer suggested the U idea, which lent itself to distinctive logos for each sport as well as slogans like U gotta believe and U is great. SEBASTIAN THE IBIS Folklore maintains that the Ibis, a symbol of knowledge found in the Everglades and Egypt, is the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane and the first to reappear after the storm. The local marsh bird was considered UM s first unofficial mascot when the school yearbook adopted the name Ibis in Its popularity grew among the students during the 1950s. In 1957, San Sebastian Hall, a residence hall on campus, sponsored an Ibis entry in the homecoming celebration. The next year, student John Stormont performed at games in an Ibis costume that was glued, sewn and pinned together and was the forerunner of today s bird. The Ibis has become one of the most recognizable college mascots in the United States. CHEERLEADERS The University of Miami cheerleaders are the catalyst for school spirit. Along with cheering at both home and away athletic contests, the squads are a strong public relations arm for the University. The University of Miami has two squads: All-Girl and Co-Ed. Under the direction of head coach Beverly Hew, a former Miami cheerleader, both cheer squads are consistently rated among the nation s best. SUNSATIONS Now in their 24th year of entertaining fans, the University of Miami Sunsations dance team is a squad of enthusiastic and talented performers. Their reputation for excellence has grown both locally and nationally. The Sunsations, coached by former member Kristine Stephenson, perform at many charitable and community service events in addition to Hurricane football and basketball games. BAND OF THE HOUR The University of Miami Band of the Hour has been in existence since The Band of the Hour is the largest and most spirited student organization on the UM campus and draws its membership from the entire student body, representing every state and most majors. Along with activities related to Hurricane football, the Band of the Hour has performed in national television variety shows, three major motion pictures, a national television commercial and the St. Patrick s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. The Band of the Hour is led on the field by student drum majors Stephanie Gust, Christopher Walker, and Brad Newman. The Director of the Band of the Hour is Dr. Thomas Keck. FOUR FINGERS At the beginning of the fourth quarter at every home football game, Miami players and fans can be seen holding up four fingers. The sign indicates their belief that a game is won in that crucial final period. True Hurricane fans and players use the sign as a symbol they own that last quarter. LIL JOE AND TOUCHDOWN TOMMY Lil Joe was a forerunner to the present Touchdown Tommy cannon fired by the Sigma Chi fraternity after each UM score. The Smoke Band of the Hour It s all about the U Sunsations MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Band of the Hour THE SMOKE The traditional Hurricane "smoke" entrance began in the 1950's in the Orange Bowl. In an attempt to increase fan intererst, UM transportation director Bob Nalette came up with the idea of using fire extinguishers to produce the now-famous smoke that the Hurricanes run through as they enter the field at Sun Life Stadium. The original setup included flashing lights, two large hurricane flags and a tape of a hurricanes blasted over the loud speaker while a pipe welded together by Nalette blew smoke. The flags and lights are now gone, but the smoke and sound still remain. WAR CANOE TROPHY An authentic Seminole war canoe, hand carved and painted by Seminole Indians from a 200- year-old Everglades cypress tree felled by lighting, was donated on behalf of the city of Hollywood in 1955 as a trophy for the annual football game between Miami and Florida. The canoe symbolized the magnificent spirit and fighting determination traditional of the independent Florida Seminole tribe that was displayed annually between the Hurricanes and Gators. Today the canoe is on display in UM s Sports Hall of Fame on campus. It s all about the U Sebastian the Ibis It s all about the U 27

Quarterbacks excel in Miami s balanced prostyle offense. And they not only produce because of the system, they enter the professional ranks more prepared because of it. From Curci to Dorsey, a span of almost 50 years, Miami has consistently produced quarterbacks who have moved on to the next level and succeeded. Jim Kelly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Gino Torretta s 2008 induction into the College Football Hall of Fame was the latest testament to the excellence of Miami s quarterbacks through the years. Vinny Testaverde just finished his 23rd year in the National Football League. Two Heisman Trophy winners. Three Maxwell Award winners. Two Davey O Brien Award winners. Two Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winners. Five national championships. At Miami, running backs get the chance to shine with the nation watching. Their exploits draw the attention of the college football world. Miami s balanced offensive philosophy places an emphasis on spreading the wealth. The running backs get their chance to make a difference. While the Miami passing game has deservedly developed a national reputation over the last 25 years, it s the running game that has been the key when the Hurricanes have reached the pinnacle of the sport. Running behind an offensive line that traditionally ranks among college football s best, Miami running backs have averaged almost 5.5 yards per carry over the last 10 seasons and have six 1,000-yard seasons in the last 12 years. The success of Miami s running backs hasn t been lost on NFL scouts as 38 Hurricanes backs have been drafted by professional teams, including 16 since Miami backs have been first-round selections in the NFL draft 10 times. Take a look around the NFL and it s easy to find runners from UM. Willis McGahee in Baltimore, Clinton Portis in Washington and Frank Gore in San Francisco are all starting running backs in the league NFL Rookie of the Year Edgerrin James Edgerrin James Willis McGahee Clinton Portis Frank Gore Ottis Anderson Najeh Davenport James Jackson Cleveland Gary Alonzo Highsmith Melvin Bratton 2002 AFC Rookie of the Year Clinton Portis MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS All-time career rushing leader Ottis Anderson In 2002, McGahee burst on the national scene by becoming only the fifth running back in college football history to rush for more than 1,500 yards and score more than 25 touchdowns in the same season on the way to consensus first-team All-America honors and a fourth-place finish in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. Clinton Portis (second-round draft choice of Denver in 2002) went on to earn 2002 AFC Rookie of the Year honors by The Sporting News and Sports Illustrated and NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press. McGahee was a first-round draft choice of the Buffalo Bills in All-American tailback Willis McGahee James, in his 10 NFL seasons, has rushed for 12,121 yards and played in four Pro Bowls. He has seven 1,000 yard rushing seasons. In 2008, Portis ranked third in the NFL in rushing yards (1,407) while Gore registered his third-straight 1,000 yard season. No other college can match the running backs that Miami has sent on to the NFL in recent years. The 49ers Frank Gore led the NFC in rushing in

Split out wide or set at flanker, Miami receivers flourish in the Hurricanes offense before taking their talents to the next level. Pro scouts know that Miami produces wide receivers of the highest order. The latest crop of talented receivers includes five wideouts who have been drafted in just this decade alone, not to mention Devin Hester, who was moved to wide receiver by the Chicago Bears. And that s just a hint of the success Hurricanes pass catchers have achieved over the years. Thirty-six Hurricanes wide receivers have been NFL draft picks, including seven first-round draft choices. Three UM receivers have earned All-America honors. Miami s balanced offense is built around spreading the wealth. Everyone gets their chance to shine. And every receiver is put in the position to make big plays in the big games. Recent stars Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss and Devin Hester shined in the NFL in Johnson, a 2003 first-round draft pick and three-time Pro Bowler, tied for the league-lead with 1,427 receiving yards. Wayne ranked 10th in the league with 1,130 receiving yards and was selected to his third Pro Bowl. Moss picked up his third-career 1,000-yard season with 1,044 yards. Hester made the switch to receiver and led the Bears with 580 yards while also gaining 877 yards in total return yards. 8 TIGHT ENDS If you re a tight end, you want to go to the University of Miami. As Sports Illustrated wrote last spring about Miami s tradition of tight ends: Top recruits know if they go to Miami they ll be featured in the offense and instantly respected by pro teams. The recent lineage is incredible and there will likely be more to come. That lineage includes five tight ends currently in the NFL: Jeremy Shockey, Bubba Franks, Kellen Winslow and Greg Olsen. Twelve Miami tight ends have been drafted by NFL teams, including four first-round selections since 2000 (Franks, Shockey, Winslow and Olsen). Three Hurricanes tight ends have been named All-America UM All-American and NFL Pro Bowler Daniel Bubba Franks Jeremy Shockey Bubba Franks Kellen Winslow Greg Olsen Willie Smith Kevin Everett Glenn Dennison 2001 UM All-American and NFL Pro Bowler Jeremy Shockey MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Mackey Award Winner and NFL Pro Bowler Kellen Winslow 2006 NFL First Round Pick Greg Olsen Willie Smith Kevin Everett 31

9 MIAMI FOOTBALL UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI hurricanesports.com Bryant McKinnie Brett Romberg Eric Winston Vernon Carey Chris Myers Leon Searcy Joaquin Gonzalez Rashad Butler 2004 NFL first round pick Vernon Carey OFFENSIVE LINE 2001 Outland Trophy winner Bryant McKinnie The guys in the trenches make all the glitz and glamour of Miami s spectacular offensive success possible, and the Hurricanes consistently have one of college football s finest offensive lines. They make the Miami offensive machine go. The little school in Coral Gables has been an assembly line for offensive linemen for 60 years. Never has it been as productive as in recent seasons. Miami s offensive lines in this decade rank among the best ever assembled. Over the span of the last seven seasons, the offensive line made way for a record while allowing a phenomenally low number of sacks. In fact, the starting unit allowed just eight sacks in 2002, three sacks in 2001 and only two during the 2000 season. Spearheading the unit was a pair of two-time All-America tackles in Bryant McKinnie and Joaquin Gonzalez and an All-America center in Brett Romberg. McKinnie became the first Miami player to win the coveted Outland Trophy in In 2002, Romberg won the Dave Rimington Award as college football s best center Rimington Award winner Brett Romberg Rashad Butler The latest All-American was Eric Winston in A tight end who was converted to offensive tackle, Winston came back from a serious knee injury to become one of college football s top linemen in Eric Winston Miami s recent offensive lines have set a new standard of excellence for others to follow. But those Hurricanes were already following a rich tradition of Hurricanes linemen that dates back to the 1940s. More than 40 Hurricanes offensive linemen have been drafted, including four first-round selections. McKinnie, Martin Bibla and Gonzalez were chosen in the 2002 NFL Draft; Vernon Carey was a first-round choice in 2004; Chris Myers was selected in 2005; and Eric Winston was drafted in Chris Myers 1992 first-round draftee Leon Searcy played for Pittsburgh and Jacksonville 2000 and 2001 first-team All-American Joaquin Gonzalez 32

10 2002 UM All-American Jerome McDougle NFL veteran Damione Lewis DEFENSIVE LINE For a long time now, Quarterback U. has been making a name for itself on another front: The Defensive Front. Miami s defensive line has produced an Outland Trophy winner (Russell Maryland, 1990); a Lombardi Award winner (Warren Sapp, 1994); a Knute Rockne Award winner (Ted Hendricks, 1968); nine All-Americans since 1986 and 24 All-Americans overall. Miami has also produced three other Outland Trophy finalists, three other Lombardi Award finalists, one Hendricks Award finalist, and even a Heisman Trophy finalist (Sapp, who placed sixth in the voting in 1994) Lombardi Award winner Warren Sapp Vince Wilfork Russell Maryland Warren Sapp Ted Hendricks Cortez Kennedy Jerome McDougle Baraka Atkins Orien Harris William Joseph Damien Lewis Calais Campbell Vince Wilfork of the New England Patriots MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Outland Trophy winner and NFL Pro Bowler Russell Maryland College and Pro Football Hall of Fame Ted Hendricks 1990 UM All-American and NFL Pro Bowler Cortez Kennedy 2001 National Champion William Joseph 33

Williams Jon Beason Rocky McIntosh Leon Williams Micheal Barrow Darrin Smith Nate Webster Jesse Armstead 2007 first-round draft choice and NFL Pro Bowler Jon Beason LINEBACKERS 1996 first-round draft choice and NFL Pro Bowler Ray Lewis Several schools tout themselves as Linebacker U. While many schools can make a good argument, there s no disputing the record of success University of Miami linebackers have built. And that s why Sports Illustrated has called Miami the new Linebacker U. Since 1982, 21 Miami linebackers have been NFL draft picks, including first-round choices Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens, 1996), Dan Morgan (Carolina Panthers, 2001), Jonathan Vilma (New York Jets, 2004), D.J. Williams (Denver Broncos, 2004) and Jon Beason (Carolina Panthers, 2007). Four times Miami linebackers have been finalists for the prestigious Butkus Award, with Morgan winning the coveted trophy in 2000 as part of a season in which the star middle linebacker swept all three major defensive awards (Butkus, Bednarik and Nagurski awards). Miami has long been known for its great quarterbacks, but the Hurricanes sustained success over the years has had just as much to do with outstanding defensive play as with the excellence of its offense. The school known as Quarterback U in football circles actually has an even stronger tradition of producing top linebackers. Rocky McIntosh of the Washington Redskins 2004 first-round draftchoice Jonathan Vilma Leon Williams of the Cleveland Browns This has been particularly evident over the last 25 years, as eight first-team All-America linebackers have come from Miami and 22 Hurricanes linebackers have been taken in the NFL draft since 1982, including five first-round draftees. Jon Beason was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the first round of the 2007 draft. Miami linebackers have been at the forefront of the evolution of college defenses from large, pounding squads into disruptive units built around speed, pressure and opportunism. D.J. Williams was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos Miami is known not just as The U. It s also known as Linebacker U Butkus Award winner Dan Morgan 1992 UM All-American Micheal Barrow 34

12 2007 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bennie Blades All-American Kenny Phillips was a first round draft choice in NFL First-Rounder Kelly Jennings DEFENSIVE BACKS The Hurricanes have been a consistent producer of big-time defensive backs, players who have thrived in Miami s aggressive 4-3 defense for decades. Twelve Hurricanes defensive backs have earned All-America status, but many others have compiled standout college performances that have led to productive NFL careers. In 1966, Tom Beier became Miami s first All- American defensive back of the modern era, but Beier was just the start of a trend that continues to the present day. Such players as former NFL great Burgess Owens ( ), Fred Marion ( ), 1987 Thorpe Award winner Bennie Blades ( ) and Ryan McNeil ( ) also flourished at UM. In 2006, Bennie Blades was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The 2001 secondary may rank among the finest in collegiate history, as all four starters safeties Ed Reed and James Lewis and cornerbacks Mike Rumph and Phillip Buchanon were selected in the 2002 NFL draft, with Buchanon, Reed and Rumph going in the first round. In 2004, UM sent touted free safety Sean Taylor to the Washington Redskins with the fifth pick of the draft, and 2005 saw Antrel Rolle get selected in the first round by the Arizona Cardinals. In 2006, three Miami cornerbacks were drafted: Kelly Jennings (first round, Seattle), Devin Hester (second round, Chicago), and Marcus Maxey (fifth round, Kansas City). In 2007, safety Brandon Meriweather was taken in the first round by the New England Patriots and in 2008, safety Kenny Phillips went in the first round to the New York Giants consensus All- American Sean Taylor 2000 and 2001 All-American Ed Reed Ed Reed Mike Rumph Phillip Buchanon Kelly Jennings Sean Taylor Antrel Rolle Tom Beier Burgess Owens Fred Marion Bennie Blades Ryan McNeil Brandon Meriweather Tremain Mack Darryl Williams Kenny Phillips MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS UM All-America Brandon Meriweather The Miami defensive scheme creates a harvest of opportunities for defensive backs with a ball-hawking mentality. The Hurricanes have a proven tradition of attracting the best and preparing them for collegiate championships and a chance in the NFL. The record speaks for itself. A whopping 41 professional draftees, including 25 since 1988 more than one draft choice per year and 12 firstround NFL draft picks. At least two Miami defensive backs have been chosen in the same draft a total of eight times. Phillip Buchanon was drafted in the first round by Oakland in 2002 For defensive backs, Miami is the pathway to greatness first-round draft choice Antrel Rolle of the Arizona Cardinals 35

Outstanding special teams play has become as much of a tradition at the University of Miami as winning national championships. Want more proof? Just go back and watch the first play of Super Bowl XLI, when Devin Hester ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown. As a rookie in 2007, Hester set an NFL record with six touchdowns on returns. Since 1995, the Hurricanes have blocked 48 kicks or punts. Over the last seven seasons, Miami has returned punts for touchdowns a whopping 17 times! In addition to Hester, some of the greatest return men in college football history have plied their skills at Miami: Phillip Buchanon, Santana Moss, Daryl Jones, Kevin Williams, Wesley Carroll, Darryl Spencer, Tremain Mack, Roscoe Parrish and Randal Hill. The Hurricanes annually rank among the nation s best in kickoff returns and punt returns UM All-American and First Round pick Phillip Buchanon 1991 UM All-American Kevin Williams Several names that rank among the finest placekickers in college history played for the Hurricanes: Carlos Huerta, Greg Cox, Danny Miller, Dane Prewitt, 2001 All-American Todd Sievers and Jon Peattie UM All-American Santana Moss No small factor in the success of the Hurricanes has been consistent excellence at punter. Players such as Rick Tuten, Jeff Feagles, Pat Barrett, Harry Ghaul and Freddie Capshaw have established a tradition of a punting game that can pin opponents deep and allows for the Hurricanes defense to set up scoring opportunities for the offense. NFL veteran Roscoe Parrish The Bears Devin Hester returned the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XLI for a touchdown Punter Jeff Feagles finished his 22nd season in the NFL in Simply put, the Miami Hurricanes has been known for some of the best special teams performers at the college level and in the Pros. 14 1991 All-American placekicker Carlos Huerta 2000 and 2001 All- American offensive tackle Joaquin Gonzalez 1983 national champion Albert Bentley WALK-ON WONDERS The University of Miami is the ideal place for football players to walk on and become an integral part of a team. Many walk-ons go on to eventually earn athletic scholarships, but all have the opportunity to become a part of a football program rich in tradition while attending an educational institution with an outstanding reputation for higher learning. Beginning in the early 1980s, when the Hurricanes began their run of five national championships, and continuing under head coach Randy Shannon, walk-ons have always played a part in the program s success. Carlos Huerta ( ) is just one of the numerous former UM walk-ons to garner honors at the college level and move on to pro football. Huerta, the starting placekicker on UM s 1991 national championship team, emerged to become a consensus All-American. In 1998, walk-on offensive lineman Joaquin Gonzalez was placed on scholarship. Gonzalez, who had an academic scholarship to attend UM, went on to become the first offensive lineman in Big East history to be named Rookie of the Year. Earning Big East All-Academic honors four times in his career, Gonzalez was named a first-team All-America by the Football Writers Association in 2000 and 2001, and was the 2001 Draddy Award winner (Academic Heisman) recognizing college football s top student-athlete Ray Guy Award finalist punter Freddie Capshaw Carlos Huerta Joaquin Gonzalez Freddie Capshaw Albert Bentley Andre King 2001 NFL draftee Andre King MIAMI FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS JUNIOR COLLEGE SUCCESS Jerome McDougle Cortez Kennedy Jeremy Shockey Bryant McKinnie Two-time All-American OL Bryant McKinnie was a 1999 transfer from Lackawanna (PA) JC Each year, the University of Miami football program looks to junior colleges across the country in search of veteran players ready to step into key roles with the Hurricanes. That s not just a coincidence. At Miami, the dual-sport athlete is appreciated and coveted. Miami football players have proven themselves as forces to be reckoned with in track and field. In 13 seasons of BIG EAST competition, UM gridders won 31 conference titles, including 12 indoor titles and 19 outdoor titles, while setting four conference records. Miami football players still hold seven UM indoor records and eight UM outdoor marks in the BIG EAST. Now in the Atlantic Coast Conference, UM football players, led by wide receiver Lance Leggett, have proved strong contenders in both the ACC indoor and outdoor championships. Hurricanes football players have asserted dominance in track since Bennie Blades set the UM indoor record in the 300 meters in UM s first football/track superstar was All- American receiver Horace Copeland, the 1992 BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer after winning the long jump, 100-meters, and 4x100-meter relay at the conference meet. He went on to become the first UM track athlete to earn All-America honors.
