Next Up in Crusader Basketball: The Valparaiso University men s basketball team will make its second consecutive appearance in the National Invitation Tournament and its seventh straight postseason appearance beginning Tuesday night, as the seventh-seeded Crusaders make the trip to Champaign, Ill. to face second-seeded Illinois. Head Coach Matt Lottich: Matt Lottich is in his first season at the helm of the Valparaiso University men s basketball program in after being named the 22nd head coach in program history on April 7. Lottich previously served as an assistant coach for the last three seasons, helping Valpo earn 78 victories - including a school-record 30 last season - and a pair of Horizon League regular season titles. With his 24 wins this year, Lottich has tied W.P. Shadoan ( ) for most wins by a head coach in their first season at Valpo. Series Notes: Valpo is 0-6 all-time versus Illinois, with all six previous matchups coming in Champaign. Heading to the Postseason Again - Valpo received an at-large berth into this year s postseason NIT with a 24-8 record on the season. - This year is the seventh straight season Valpo will appear in postseason play and the 16th time in the last 22 years. - Every four-year senior class since the 1995 class has made at least one postseason trip. Repeat the March to MSG - Valpo is hoping to replicate last year s run to the title game of the NIT. - Last season s Crusader squad was a 1 seed in the NIT by virtue of being one of the First Four Out of the NCAA Tournament, and put together quite the memorable postseason run, setting a school record by winning four postseason games. - Valpo won home games against Texas Southern, Florida State and Saint Mary s - the latter coming in front of a program-record crowd at the ARC - to advance to play at Madison Square Garden. - The Crusaders then won a thriller over BYU in the semifinals before falling in the title game to George Washington. Crusader Postseason History - This year marks Valpo s fourth appearance all-time in the NIT - the Crusaders are 4-3 in their previous three appearances. - Prior to last season s run to the title game, Valpo lost at Iowa in 2003 and lost at Miami in The 2012 and 2016 Crusader squads earned automatic bids to the NIT by virtue of winning regular season league titles, while this year s team joins the 2003 team as squads which received at-large bids. - The Crusaders last postseason victory prior to last season came in the first round of the 2008 CBI, when Valpo won at Washington. - Valpo also owns a pair of wins in the 1998 NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Championship, and also won postseason games in 1938, 1962 (2), 1966, 1967 (2), 1969 and Representing the Horizon League - The Crusaders at-large bid to the NIT makes the Horizon League one of just two NCAA Tournament one-bid leagues to place multiple teams into this year s NIT. - Oakland is also representing the Horizon League in the NIT as an automatic qualifier, while Colorado State, Fresno State and Boise State are all in the NIT field out of the Mountain West Conference. Playing With Experimental Rules - This year s NIT will be played under a few experimental rules. - Most notably, each half will be separated into two 10-minute segments for the purpose of the foul limit. Within each segment, each team will be permitted four fouls. - With the fifth (and each subsequent) foul of each segment, two free throws will be awarded to the opposing team. - The first segment of each half will start when the ball becomes live, and end when the game clock reads 10:00. The second segment will begin when the game clock reads 9:59 and end when the half ends. - In overtime, teams will be permitted three fouls - the fourth foul will result in two free throws being awarded. - In addition, on fouls in the front court against the defense and/or a stoppage of play for blood, the shot clock will be set to 20 seconds (if below 20 seconds) or will remain the same as when play is interrupted (if at 20 seconds or above). Champions Again - With the Crusaders win over Wright State on Feb. 24, Valpo secured a share of the Horizon League regular season title. - Valpo has now won the regular season crown in five of the last six seasons. - The Crusaders have claimed their conference regular season title in 14 of the last 23 years. - Valpo now has 17 regular season league titles total in program history. Five In Six Years - The Crusaders are in some exclusive company by virtue of their five Horizon League regular season titles over the last six years. - Prior to Valpo, only Xavier ( ) and Butler ( ) had claimed five Horizon League regular season crowns in a six-year span, Butler doing so five straight years. - The Crusaders finished out the regular season with a 14-4 record in league play, matching the squad s championship record. - Last year s team posted the program s best record within Horizon League play at Valpo captured the and league titles with a 13-3 record. Joining the Winningest Teams - Valpo has already earned 24 victories this season, tied for the fifth-most wins in a single season in program history. - Only eight seasons have seen the Crusaders win 24 or more games. - Valpo also won 24 games in , and , while winning 25 games in the season.

For Peters, Highs and the Lowest Low - Senior Alec Peters learned he had been named the Horizon League Player of the Year on Wednesday, March 1. - Later that afternoon, he learned that his collegiate career was over, as the injury which sidelined him for the final regular season weekend would keep him out the remainder of the year. - Prior to missing the game at Wright State, Peters had started all 134 games of his collegiate career. - Then, on Thursday, March 2, Peters was named one of five CoSIDA First Team Academic All-Americans for his work in the classroom and on the hardwood. Players Stepping Up - With Peters absence, the Crusaders have had a number of players step up with big performances. - Shane Hammink set a new career best with 25 points against Wright State, while Lexus Williams tallied 19 points - the second-best effort of his career. - Then, at Northern Kentucky, Tevonn Walker recorded 25 points for a new career high, while Hammink added 23 points as well. - After averaging just 8.3 minutes per game over the first 16 Horizon League games, freshman walk-on John Kiser played 44 minutes over the final two regular season games before earning his first career start in the league tournament versus Milwaukee, playing 21 minutes, scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds. Winning Big - The Crusaders were responsible for four of the eight 20+ point decisions in Horizon League action this season of Valpo s 14 Horizon League wins came by double figures. - The championship team won just five league games by 10 or more points, including just two by 20+ points. - Last year s team dominated in setting a league record for scoring margin within league-only play, winning six games by at least 20 points and seven more by points. 20x20 - With the home win over Cleveland State, the Crusaders became the 20th team in program history to reach the 20-win mark of Valpo s previous win seasons have come within the last 23 years. - The win over the Vikings made this year s squad the third-earliest (based on calendar date) in program history to reach the 20-win mark - the team won its 20th game on Jan. 31, while last year s team earned win number 20 on Feb. 6. Record-Breaking Moments - Alec Peters needed just 4:31 to score his seventh point at home against UIC and surpass Bryce Drew s Valpo career scoring record of 2,142 career points. - While Peters needed 125 games to break Drew s record, which was set in 121 games, Peters played over 300 fewer minutes than Drew to surpass the mark. - Peters is just the fourth different player to hold Valpo s career scoring record in the last 48 years (Bruce Lindner-1970; Tracy Gipson-1993; Bryce Drew-1998). - Peters career-high 16th rebound of the Green Bay home game moved him past Chris Ensminger atop the Valpo record book with his 911th career rebound. - Peters broke his first Valpo career record in the win at YSU, as his first basket of that game surpassed Drew s record of 696 made field goals. - Most recently, Peters connected on a free throw with 15 seconds to play versus NKU to break Ed Eckart s Valpo career record of 452 free throws made. Non-League Success - The Crusaders entered league play with at least 10 victories under their belt for the fourth time in the last five years following the Chicago State win.

5 - Valpo owns a (.729) record in pre-league action since the Horizon League eliminated the early December league weekend prior to the season. - This is the second straight year that Valpo entered league play with a 10-3 record in the pre-league campaign. Beating Ranked Teams - Valpo snapped a 40-game winless streak against nationally-ranked opposition on Nov. 29 with the win over Rhode Island. - The Crusaders had not taken down a top-25 opponent since their win over Ole Miss in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. - Prior to the win over the Rams, Valpo had not earned a home win over a top-25 team since beating Notre Dame in December of Starting on a Winning Note - Head coach Matt Lottich became the first Crusader coach in 36 years to open his head coaching tenure at Valpo with a win with the victory over SUU. - Tom Smith was the last Valpo head coach to start his Crusader career with a win, winning three straight in six days at home to open the campaign. - The Drews all faced tough competition in their head coaching debuts at Valpo: Homer at Butler, Scott at eventual national champion Syracuse, and Bryce at Arizona. - Lottich was the first coach to start his Valpo career with a 7-1 record since Wilbur Allen started off the season by winning seven of the season s first eight games. Addition to the Trophy Case - Valpo s wins over Alabama and BYU gave the Crusaders the Heavyweight championship belt at the Men Who Speak Up Main Event. - The title is the program s fourth in-season championship in the last seven years. - Valpo most recently earned the championship trophy in November 2014 at the Challenge in Music City. - The Crusaders took home top honors in November 2010 at the Las Vegas Invitational and in December 2010 at the Lou Henson Award Tournament. Wins Over Power Conference Foes - Valpo s win over Alabama was its third over a power conference opponent in the last two years - the Crusaders went on the road to beat Oregon State last season and then took down Florida State at the ARC in the second round of the NIT. - Prior to last season s win over Oregon State, Valpo had not defeated a team from the power-5 conferences since winning at Washington in the 2008 CBI. - Nine out of Valpo s last 12 victories over opponents out of the power-5 conferences have come on neutral courts. A Look at the Record Book - Lexus Williams matched the program s single-game steals record with seven against Trinity Christian. - Williams tied a record previously shared by Milo Stovall (Dec. 12, Texas A&M-CC) and Bryce Drew (Dec. 7, Milwaukee). - Meanwhile, Alec Peters attempted 29 shots versus the Trolls - the most by a Crusader in at least 22 years. Peters then tossed up 28 shots against Santa Clara. - Valpo matched a program record as a team with a perfect performance at the foul line at Oregon, going 14-of-14 from the charity stripe. - The Crusaders 17 steals against Ball State as a team were third-most all-time, just two shy of the record of 19 (vs. Centenary, 12/10/88). - Williams picked up six steals against the Cardinals, tied for fourth-most in a game by a single player. - Peters has played 134 career games, tied for second-most by a Crusader all time. What s Back - The Crusaders welcomed back eight letterwinners from last season s 30-win squad, including a pair of starters in Alec Peters and Tevonn Walker. - In all, Valpo returned 50% of its minutes played, 57.1% of its scoring and 47.5% of its rebounding from last year. What s New - Five players are in their first season of eligibility for the Crusaders this year Derrik Smits has taken the court this season for the first time after redshirting last season due to injury Spaniard Jaume Sorolla, who most recently helped the Spain U20 squad win the 2016 FIBA U20 European Championship, and guard Micah Bradford, ranked among the top-20 players in the state of Illinois, join Valpo as scholarship freshmen. - The Crusaders also welcome a pair of walk-ons in senior Jason Karys - a three-year team manager - and freshman John Kiser. High Praise Entering the Year - Despite losing nearly half their scoring from last year s squad, this year s Crusader team still received quite a bit of national love entering the year. - Valpo was a near-unanimous choice to win the Horizon League among national media projections. - The Crusaders entered the season receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches poll. - Valpo was ranked #51 on CBS Sports ranking of all Division I teams, and began the season #69 in the Ken Pomeroy ratings. - Matt Norlander of CBS Sports named Valpo one of his teams to watch as a potential March sleeper. Peters Garners Accolades - Coming off of a season in which he was named an Honorable Mention All-American, Alec Peters entered the season receiving a lot of notice as one of the nation s top players. - Peters was tabbed a Third Team preseason All-American by Blue Ribbon Magazine and NBC Sports, among others. - Peters earned a spot on the watch list for the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award, both of which are awarded to the National Player of the Year. - In rankings of the nation s top players, Peters ranked #16 on CBS Sports list and #29 on NBC Sports list. - Peters is on the Karl Malone Award watch list, awarded to the nation s top power forward, and also appears on College Insider s Lute Olson Award (national Player of the Year) and Lou Henson Award (national mid-major Player of the Year) watch lists. - Peters topped Mark Adams list of best players in leagues covered by the American Sports Network, and was named the #1 most complete player in the nation by Bleacher Report. - Peters was tabbed the nation s Best Shooter by a pair of Sports Illustrated college basketball writers in their season preview materials. The International Flavor - This year s squad continues the international pipeline that Valpo has cultivated over the past two decades. - The Crusaders boast four international players on this year s roster from three different countries. - Represented are Canada (Joseph and Walker), the Netherlands (Hammink) and Spain (Sorolla). - Over the past 20 years, the Crusaders have welcomed 32 international players from 19 different countries. Crusaders Sign Pair During Early Signing Period - Valpo has signed 6 7 forward Parker Hazen from Columbia City (Ind.) H.S. and 6 8 forward Mileek McMillan from Merrillville (Ind.) H.S. to NLIs during the early signing period. - Hazen enters his senior year ranked #7 in his class in the state of Indiana according to ESPN. - Hazen was an Indiana Junior All-Star following last season, as he averaged 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in helping the Eagles to their second straight sectional title. - McMillan averaged nearly seven rebounds per game as a junior for a Merrillville team which went McMillan stood out at the Indiana Top 80 camp in early October, as he was named the camp s Mr. Defender. NBA Lineage - Three members of this year s Crusader roster boast fathers who played at the highest level of pro basketball - in the NBA. - Most notably, Derrik Smits father, Rik, played 12 seasons with the Indiana Pacers and was an All-Star. - Chandler Levingston Simon s father, Cliff Levingston, was an 11-year NBA vet who won two titles with the Chicago Bulls. - Shane Hammink s father, Geert, was a 1993 first-round draft pick who played parts of three seasons in the NBA.

10 Matt Lottich Head Coach 1st Season Stanford, 2004 Valparaiso University President Mark A. Heckler, Ph.D., and Director of Athletics Mark LaBarbera announced Thursday, April 7, 2016 that Matt Lottich has been hired as the 22nd head coach in the history of the Valpo men s basketball program. Lottich, who has been a member of the Crusader coaching staff for the last three years, is just the program s fifth head coach in the last 36 years. Lottich arrived at Valparaiso University in summer 2013 and has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach on the Valpo men s basketball coaching staff, helping guide the Crusaders to 78 victories during that span. Valpo has won two Horizon League regular season championships and one league tournament title in Lottich s tenure. The Crusaders have recorded the top two victory totals in program history in the last two seasons with Lottich on the bench. Valpo broke the previous school record for wins in a season during the campaign, winning 28 games and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. This past season, Valpo won a program-record 30 games and advanced to the NIT championship game at Madison Square Garden. Lottich brings nearly a decade of professional playing experience to the head coaching position at Valparaiso University. Lottich spent eight years playing professionally in Japan for the Oita Heat Devils and the Osaka Evessa, earning All-Star recognition four times. He also played one season in Germany in the Bundesliga for the Dusseldorf Giants, played one season in New Zealand in the NBL for the Harbor Heat and was a member of the New Jersey Nets summer league team in Lottich played collegiately at Stanford University from 2000 through As a senior in , he helped lead the Cardinal to the Pac-10 title while earning NABC All-Star plaudits, awarded to the top-15 seniors in college basketball. He was also a member of the Wooden Award midseason watch list and was an Honorable Mention All Pac-10 selection as a senior. Lottich was also a member of the program s conference championship squad as a freshman in and still ranks among Stanford s single-season and career leaders in 3-pointers made. Off the court, Lottich came to Valpo from the National Collegiate Scouting Association, where he started in January Lottich ascended to the position of head scout during his time with the NCSA, which helps high school athletes navigate the world of college recruiting. Lottich also co-founded the TEAM Life Skills basketball camp in 2004 and spent nine years managing and developing the camp. Lottich played his prep basketball at New Trier [Ill.] H.S., where he was named the Chicago Tribune Athlete of the Year in 2000 and holds the distinction of being the program s all-time leading scorer.
