3 Dr. Scott Eaton On July 27, 2009, Dr. Scott Eaton was named Athletic Director at Northern Kentucky University. Eaton has worked at NKU as an administrator since 1998, and most recently served as the senior associate athletic director for administration. During his career at NKU, Eaton has played key roles in the academic, compliance, budget, event management and facility areas. He also served as NKU s interim assistant vice president for student affairs from Prior to NKU, Eaton worked at Brown University in Providence, R.I., as special assistant to the athletic director and assistant men s basketball coach. Eaton graduated from Bowdoin College in 1986 after participating in basketball, lacrosse, cross country and track. He later earned master s degrees from both Fitchburg State College and Springfield College before receiving his doctorate from Boston University. Eaton replaces Jane Meier as NKU s athletic director. Meier announced her resignation in April after spending 21 years as NKU s athletic director. I am both honored and excited about the opportunity that Dr. Votruba and Dr. Davenport have presented to me, knowing that it is a monumental task to try to match the legacy that Jane Meier leaves behind, Eaton said. While this marks the end of an incredible era, it provides us an opportunity for a new beginning for NKU athletics. The standards of excellence and the core values that have guided NKU to both local and national success, and respect as an institution, will remain the same, Eaton added. Those values will guide our athletic department into the future, where we intend to further that success, excellence, and growth in the classroom and on the playing field. 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002,

4 NKU Soccer Stadium The primary mission of NKU s intercollegiate athletics program is to provide a natural extension of secondary school programs, offering skilled student-athletes the opportunity to continue their educational and athletic experiences beyond high school. Though NKU s athletic teams continue to post impressive achievements in the classroom and in athletic competitions, its facilities do not match the same standards of quality. To position the university at the top of NCAA Division II, NKU has begun to implement a plan to improve and build intercollegiate athletics facilities. The first phase of the plan was completed in the Spring of 2007 when the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex opened, bringing the NKU men s and women s tennis teams back on campus and providing the campus community with a first-class outdoor tennis facility. On November 8, 2008, the NKU men s and women s basketball teams will host the University of Louisville to open The Bank of Kentucky Center, a $68.5 million, 9,200-seat multipurpose facility that will serve the NKU athletics teams as well as the surrounding community. The next phase of the plan is now underway, as NKU takes the opening steps to construct a $6.5 million soccer stadium adjacent to The Bank of Kentucky Center, ending a 10-year period of Norse soccer playing off campus in Wilder, Ky. Plans for the facility include seating for 1,000 spectators and an artificial playing surface that will contain one fully lighted competition field and two fully lighted practice fields. Other amenities may include concessions and restroom facilities, four team locker rooms and two officials dressing rooms, a press box and media work area, full athletic training facilities, laundry and equipment storage, and coaches offices. Construction on the new NKU soccer stadium began in Fall 2008 with completion projected for October NCAA Tournament Participant 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008

5 »» $6.5 million construction cost.»» Seating capacity for 1,000.»» Fully lighted stadium allows for both day and night contests.»» Locker room and office spaces for NKU men s and women s soccer teams.»» Fully equipped athletic training facility included.»» Media facilities include accommodations for television and radio broadcasts. Benefits of the new NKU Soccer Stadium to the campus and community: Provides a championship-caliber soccer stadium that will permit Northern Kentucky University to host sporting events, including NCAA championship tournaments, and Kentucky High School Athletic Association district, regional, and state championships. This will attract visitors who will benefit the area financially, bring prospective students to the campus. Provides lighted facilities with adequate seating and crowd control that permits Northern Kentucky University to increase the number of games held at convenient times for spectators, and allow facility use over a greater period of time by youth, high school teams, and community teams, thus giving the intercollegiate athletics program additional exposure and financial benefits. Provides the soccer teams the opportunity to compete on-campus in regular-season games and post-season championships in front of supportive home crowds. Provides the opportunity to recruit topnotch student-athletes in soccer to compete at the highest level in NCAA Division II. Provides a start to centralize Northern Kentucky University s outdoor sports venues to efficiently use restrooms, ticketing, concessions, storage and parking for athletics, campus recreation, and physical education programs. Enhances the quality of life on campus for NKU students, staff and faculty. Provides the opportunity to engage through much needed programs with the surrounding community. 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002,

6 Bob Sheehan Bob Sheehan is in his 13th year as the women s soccer head coach at Northern Kentucky University. Sheehan has built the NKU women s soccer program into one of the nation s best, and he is in those 12 seasons with the Norse. Last season, Sheehan s Norse amassed a 16-4 record and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, advancing to the second round before being ousted by Wisconsin-Parkside, who accounted for three of NKU s four defeats on the year. Sheehan also produced his first All- American since 2005 in Brandi Doss, who ranked second in the nation with 0.75 assists per game. In 2007, Sheehan led the Norse to a 12-6 record and their 10th consecutive trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Under Sheehan s direction the Norse captured the GLVC title in six of their first 10 seasons, including a string of five straight from Three years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a record and a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Sheehan was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career in 2005, and he also earned Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors after leading NKU to its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, NKU senior forward Kristen Votapek was named to the NSCAA s NCAA Division II All- America second team. Votapek also was named GLVC Player of the Year and earned Scholar All-America honors. In 2004, Sheehan led NKU to a overall record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the sixth straight year and finished with a No. 21 national ranking in the Division II poll. Six years ago, Sheehan guided the Norse to a record. NKU also earned its fifth straight NCAA Division II Tournament berth and advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Norse finished with a No. 8 national ranking in the NCAA Division II poll. Seven seasons ago, Sheehan led NKU to a record and its fifth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and spent most of the season ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Eight years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a 22-2 record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the third straight year. During the regular season, NKU jumped to No. 1 in the national poll for the first time in history. In 2000, Sheehan led NKU to a record and guided the Norse to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished as national runner-up and were ranked No. 2 nationally in the final NSCAA coaches poll. 6 Prior to taking the NKU job, Sheehan spent 13 years as head coach at St. Ursula Academy in Cincinnati NCAA Tournament Participant 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008

Sheehan, who owned a career record of at St. Ursula, won a pair of state championships (1991 and 1993), and his teams compiled a record of during his last six years. A 1984 graduate of Xavier University, Sheehan was named Girls Greater Cincinnati League Gray Division Coach of the Year seven times in his career while at St. Ursula. 8 2009 Preview State, and freshman Stephanie Wengert will serve to bolster the back line for the Norse. In net, the Norse look to a young group of players led by sophomore Stephanie Glass, who saw action in six games last season with four saves. Freshmen Cassie Lingenhoel and Rachael Wood will battle for playing time between the posts for Sheehan s squad. The midfield will be anchored by a pair of seniors for the Norse in Amie Noll and Brandi Doss. Amie Noll has nice size and strength on the ball, said Sheehan of the second-year transfer from Morehead State. She possesses some nice leadership skills from the middle of the field. Brandi Doss has really improved in her years here. She had 15 assists last year, which is a really, really good year. Doss averaged 0.75 assists per game last season, ranking second in all of Division II. She also plays with good pace, serves a nice ball, contributes to the defense, and gets into the attack, Sheehan said. 8 Amie Noll HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women s soccer team bounced back from a couple of disappointing seasons to post a 16-4 record in 2008 and return to the NCAA Division II Tournament. In 2009, NKU head coach Bob Sheehan hopes to turn that performance into a resurgence of a program that was one of the nation s most dominant in the early part of this decade. There were a multitude of reasons as to why we finished 12-6 [in 2007], Sheehan said. We feel like we had addressed those issues in the offseason. We were really looking forward to a new season starting in While practically every season in college athletics ends on a down note, as only one team can win the NCAA Tournament, Sheehan was able to celebrate his 200th coaching victory when the Norse defeated Rockhurst in the first round of the Midwest Regional. With the performance of last year s team, Sheehan became the 12th coach in Division II history to amass 200 wins and stands as the fifth winningest coach in Division II history with a.794 winning percentage. Except for one thorn in their sides, it was a complete turnaround for the Norse, who saw three of their four losses come to Great Lakes Valley Conference and Midwest Region champion Wisconsin-Parkside. All three matches against the Rangers last season took place at UWP, with the Norse dropping the regular-season contest by a 3-0 score before falling in the GLVC championship game, 2-1, on a goal in the final minute. It was a 1-0 loss in the NCAA Midwest Regional that ended NKU s season. The first time there was no doubt they deserved the victory and they deserved all three victories, but we closed the margin and we closed the gap in the last two games, Sheehan said of the Rangers, who are picked to repeat as GLVC champions this season. We just couldn t quite get the result that we wanted. They are coming down to our field this year, and hopefully we will have improved. We ll just have to see what happens. And with the team that Sheehan is returning, there is plenty of opportunity for the result to favor the Norse. While goalkeeper Angela Healy has graduated, the defensive corps remains strong. I think that some of our young defenders did really, really well last year, Sheehan said. Kristi Hofmeyer played very well and was much improved as the season went on. Elise Schmuelling played very, very well last year despite being in pain throughout most of the season. Caitlyn Mueller also had a strong season until injuries cut her time on the field short. As a unit, the Norse defense held the opposition to just 18 goals in 20 games, including eight shutouts and seven games with 10 shots against or less. Hofmeyer s shining moment last fall came in the GLVC Tournament semifinal, when her golden goal against Indianapolis in the 99th minute sent the Norse to the championship game. Schmuelling was tapped as an All-GLVC performer during her freshman campaign, while Mueller was a dominant force in the air, both defensively and on set pieces on the offensive end. Lindsey Rack also returns and will fight for playing time while Laura Painter, a transfer from Indiana NCAA Tournament Participant 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 The Norse welcome back a great deal of talent in the midfield, including juniors Morgan Price, Megan Smith and Maggie Smith along with sophomores Samantha Sutkamp, Hannah Wissel and Emily Martin. Hannah Adams, Kathryn Hale and Baileigh Frantz join the Norse for this season looking to make a difference in the midfield. Senior Ashley Warndorf returns for her fifth season at NKU and will anchor the Norse attack. Ashley Warndorf just brings a heck of a lot of athleticism, Sheehan said of Warndorf, who combines a quick step with an accurate foot to stand as one of the most dangerous strikers in the Brandi Doss

9 2009 Preview GLVC. The NKU offense looks to be one of the most balanced in the league as well, with Kendall Day and Kara Costello each chipping in six goals on the season while Kelly Sullivan and Amanda Mason had five markers apiece. Mason can really score goals and in the spring season, we sort of pushed her more forward than she had played last fall, Sheehan said of the All-GLVC performer. As a result she was our leading scorer in our spring training contests. Granted, the spring games don t count, and you re not really keeping statistics formally, but it was a good sign that she was able to score some goals. Sullivan is the top returning scorer for the Norse with five goals and nine assists last season. Kelly Snead, who was an excellent two-way player for the Norse in 2008, scored three goals and added four assists as a reserve. Junior transfer Danielle Houge, who scored eight goals in two seasons as a reserve at Western Kentucky, and freshman Sarah Smith will look to shore up the Norse attack. The key for the Norse in 2009, though, will be health, as untimely injuries in past seasons have spelled doom for the NKU teams of the past few years. Hopefully, quipped Sheehan, we ll have everybody back healthy as close as we can to the preseason and as a result, we re looking to have another strong season. That season will start on Aug. 30 when the Norse host Concord at Town & Country before they hit the road to play five of their next six games on the road. The Norse will get plenty of challenges at home, however, with GLVC foes Wisconsin-Parkside, Bellarmine, Missouri-St. Louis, Quincy, Rockhurst, Saint Joseph s and conference newcomer Maryville on the slate. And despite the positive results last season, Sheehan has no intention of taking the opposition lightly. Every match is a real challenge, so we re just going to have to work hard and be ready to play, he said. Ashley Warndorf 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002,

The Northern Kentucky University women s soccer team closed out the preseason on a good note, defeating Ohio University by a 2-1 score in exhibition play on Sunday morning. After a half-hour feeling-out period, the Bobcats were able to sneak one by Norse goalkeeper Angela Healy in the 35th minute. Rachael Philpot tossed a strong throw-in to the box on the far post, where Halle Plagens charged and just beat Healy to the ball from 2 yards out, using her body to direct the ball into the net and open the scoring. The Norse got the goal back just three minutes later as Kendall Day found some open space in the offensive third. Day sent a pass across to Ashley Warndorf, who forced Christa Puccio to come out and challenge. A simple lob over the Bobcat keeper just snuck under the crossbar to knot things back at one. Ohio began to dominate from that point, generating shot opportunities but failing to put anything significant on net. The Norse got another break late in the second half, after getting a couple of key takeaways from the Bobcats near the penalty area. Megan Smith took a pass in the 84th minute and was taken down inside the box, allowing Amanda Mason to convert a penalty kick for the eventual game winner. Healy got the win for the Norse in net, making two saves on 13 shot attempts. Jess MacLean played the second half, making one save in the loss for the Bobcats. Puccio had a save in the start for Ohio. The Northern Kentucky University women s soccer team got the 2008 season started right with a 3-2 victory over Concord on Friday night. Concord (0-1) took the advantage early, scoring in the sixth minute after Elin Torstensson took a crossing pass and slid it past NKU goalkeeper Angela Healy to open the scoring. The Mountain Lions got a second goal from Gemma Nortcliffe, whose shot from 20 yards out just clipped the bottom of the crossbar to go in the net and give Concord a 2-0 advantage. The Norse (1-0) woke up following the goal, finding an answer just four minutes later, as Brandi Doss sent a cross to Amanda Mason, who flicked a beautiful header across to find the twine and cut the deficit in half. Hannah Wissel provided the game-tying strike in the 73rd, taking a Kara Costello cross from four yards and burying the equalizer. It took less than a minute for the game-winning opportunity to show itself. Kelly Sullivan sent a serve to Costello in the 18-yard box. The sophomore then found freshman Samantha Sutkamp, who cleaned up the mess and gave the Norse a 3-2 victory. The Norse outshot the Mountain Lions by a margin of 28-7 in the game, including a 19-2 edge in the second half. Healy was sound in net, turning away two Concord shots in gaining her first career victory. The Norse (2-0) were forced to come from behind once again after the Senators (0-2) opened scoring in the 15th minute with a header goal from Cole Dant. It wasn t until the closing minutes of the first half that the Norse responded. NKU freshman Kelly Snead went on a run and got a pinpoint-accurate pass from fellow newcomer Kelly Sullivan before going on to score the equalizer in the 42nd minute. Sophomore Kendall Day followed up with a goal of her own, again from Sullivan, to take the 2-1 advantage at the half. The Norse continued to pour it on in the second half, as Day got her second goal of the contest just three minutes into the stanza off a direct free kick. Sullivan then got the opportunity to touch the twine in the 51st minute with assists from Brandi Doss and Kristi Hofmeyer. Amanda Mason finished off the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 60th minute. The result gives the Norse their second win in as many tries against the Senators, and puts the Norse at 2-0 to start the season for the seventh time in eight seasons. 36 NCAA Tournament Participant 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008

Amanda Mason, Kendall Day, Kara Costello and Kelly Sullivan each tallied goals for NKU, which improved to 3-0. The Norse also benefited from a Findlay own goal when an Oiler defender accidentally kicked the ball into her team s net in the first half. Mason started off the NKU scoring at the 15:34 mark by finding the back of the net with a shot from 10 yards. Day extended NKU s lead to 2-0 at the 23:43 mark with a goal that was assisted by both Mason and Kelly Snead. NKU s advantage increased to 3-0 in the 44th minute when Findlay defender Brianna Milne, trying to clear the ball in the box, inadvertently directed the kick into the Oilers net. The Northern Kentucky University women s soccer team suffered its first setback on Friday afternoon, falling in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener to No. 17 Wisconsin-Parkside by a 3-0 score. Ranger goalkeeper Cassie Glodowski, however, was up to the task each time. The Northern Kentucky University women s soccer team found their elusive offensive punch, pouring on Missouri S&T for a 6-1 victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Sunday. The Norse (5-1, 2-1 GLVC) got the scoring started in the 11th minute when Kelly Sullivan, playing a very aggressive offensive position, took a through pass from Kelly Snead and rifled a shot that S&T goalkeeper Kelsey Kurilla initially saved. Sullivan was able to clean up her own rebound to notch her third goal of the season. The Miners (3-3-1, GLVC) found an equalizer late in the first half when Melissa Young sent a through ball of her own ahead to Melia Miller, who took the ball off a defender s leg and put a shot off the left post and in for her third marker of the year. Ashley Warndorf thought she may have had the difference maker in the 56th minute, rifling a shot into the top left side, however, the assistant referee raised his flag for the offside call. Warndorf still helped the winner in the 74th, sending a centering pass to Lauren Franzen for her first goal of the season. Franzen would strike again just two minutes later, turning a broken play into a goal when Amanda Mason s initial shot was saved. Brandi Doss picked up the rebound and slid it across to Franzen who banged it home for her second. Sullivan added another goal shortly thereafter, as Franzen centered a pass for Amanda Mason, who bounced it up and allowed Sullivan to lob a header past the S&T keeper for her second of the game. Jessica Page and Kara Costello tallied goals late to get the 6-1 final score.
