BUCKEYES VS. IRISH The No. 7/9 Ohio State men s hockey team opens Big Ten Conference play at No. 5 Notre Dame this weekend. The Buckeyes (3-2-1, B1G) and Fighting Irish (3-2-1, B1G) will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind. The game Friday will be streamed through NBCSports.com. Saturday s contest will be televised by NBCSN and carried by TSN.ca and the TSN app in Canada. The radio call for both games will be on 1460 AM in Columbus, online at ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ sportsnetwork and on the Ohio State Buckeyes mobile app, with Herb Howenstine and John Mowat calling the action. Live stats, and radio and video links, can be found at go.osu.edu/mhkylivestats18. BUCKEYE NOTES TO KNOW Ohio State and Notre Dame are opening the Big Ten schedule for the second year in a row. The Irish won the league regular season and tournament championships last year, with Ohio State the runner-up for both titles. The Buckeyes were 1-3 vs. the Irish during the regular season a season ago, splitting the series in South Bend. The last meeting between the Buckeyes and Irish was the B1G tournament final on Irish home ice. The Buckeyes came back from a 2-0 deficit but lost in overtime, 3-2. The Buckeyes and Irish both advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four a season ago. Ohio State lost to Minnesota Duluth in the semifinals, 2-1, and the Bulldogs topped the Irish by the same score for the NCAA title. Buckeye senior Mason Jobst has 134 career points, passing Paul Caponigri (132 from ) for the most by an Ohio State skater since Jobst leads active NCAA players in career points and is tied for first among current sophomores/juniors/seniors with 1.12 points per game. He is second all-time in points in Big Ten games only with 80, behind the 86 posted by Minnesota s Justin Kloos from Jobst enters Big Ten play second in goals in league play with 35, trailing former teammate Nick Schilkey (36 from ). Ohio State is in a stretch of five-consecutive road games. The team is in away games this year, with a sweep at Arizona State to open the season and a tie at Bowling Green Saturday. 2 IN THE POLLS In the new USCHO.com poll, Ohio State is No. 7, with Notre Dame, this week s opponent, No. 5. In all, six of the seven Big Ten teams are ranked, with all seven receiving votes. Joining the Buckeyes and the Irish in the Top 10 are No. 6 Penn State and No. 10 Minnesota, while Michigan is No. 12 and Wisconsin is No. 16. Michigan State is receiving votes. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll released Monday, the Buckeyes are No. 9 and the Irish are No. 5. No. 6 Penn State, No. 8 Minnesota and No. 13 Michigan join Ohio State and Notre Dame in the Top 15 poll, with Wisconsin and Michigan State receiving votes. Of the three teams Ohio State has played this season, Bowling Green is now ranked ninth, UMass is 11th and Arizona State is receiving votes in the USCHO poll. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings, the Falcons are 10th, the Minutemen are 11th and the Sun Devils are in the others receiving votes. The Buckeyes started the year ranked second in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings and third in the USCHO poll. The team moved into the top spot for the following two weeks, the first time at No. 1 in a national poll since WMPL Radio polls in November/December Ohio State is one of two schools with its men s and women s teams ranked in the Top 7 of the USCHO.com poll this week. The Ohio State women are ranked fourth, with the Minnesota Duluth women No. 7 and the Bulldog men ranked first. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING Through the first six games, Ohio State is averaging 2.67 goals a game and allowing 3.17 per contest. The power play is 4-for-30 (.133) and the penalty kill is 23-for-31 (.742) Carson Meyer has a team-high four goals and seven points. Mason Jobst is second with three goals and six points. Meyer, Jobst and Tanner Laczynski, who is third with five points, all have three assists to lead the team. The Buckeyes led the NCAA on the penalty kill last season and were the NCAA statistical champion on the power play in In the last three years combined, Ohio State is the only school to rank in the Top 5 nationally in goals scored (412), goals per game (3.55) and power play (.257). IN THE B1G THIS SEASON This year, teams will again play 24-game conference schedules, taking on the other six conference teams twice at home and twice on the road. The Big Ten Tournament will be played at campus sites, with best-of-three quarterfinal series and single-game semifinals and final. The Big Ten will follow a new overtime protocol and points system this season, including the addition of a 3-on-3 overtime period. Any regular season conference game that remains tied after regulation will play the NCAA-mandated fiveminute, 5-on-5 sudden-death overtime period. If the game remains tied, the two teams will then play a five-minute, 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime period. If the game is still tied following both overtime periods, then the game will move to a sudden-death shootout. Teams will be awarded three points in the conference standings for a win in regulation or the 5-on-5 overtime period. If the game is tied following the 5-on-5 overtime, both teams will receive one point, with a second point being awarded to the team that wins in either the 3-on- 3 overtime period or the shootout. OSU VS NOTRE DAME - THE SERIES Ohio State and Notre Dame, both 2018 Frozen Four teams, met five times in during the first campaign for the Irish as an affiliate member of the Big Ten. In the regular season, Notre Dame swept the Buckeyes in Columbus Nov. 3-4 (4-1, 3-2). Those marked the first Big Ten games of the year for both squads. In South Bend Feb. 9-10, the Irish won the opener 2-1 before a 5-1 Buckeye victory. The squads last met in the Big Ten Tournament championship game hosted by Notre Dame March 17. The Buckeyes rallied from a 2-0 deficit, but the Irish, who also won the regular season title, prevailed in overtime, 3-2, for the tourney crown. All-time, the series between the Buckeyes and Irish is tied, , with the first game Feb. 13, In South Bend, Notre Dame leads, Ohio State and Notre Dame skated as members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association until when the league was disbanded. Ohio State was a founding member of the conference in and played for two years before leaving for three seasons ( , `74-75, `75-76) and skating as an independent. Ohio State then rejoined the CCHA for the campaign and remained until The Irish were in the league in and `82-83 and then rejoined in The Buckeyes and Irish last met as CCHA foes March 23, 2013 in the CCHA Tournament semifinals, a 3-1 win for Notre Dame at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. THE IRISH Notre Dame is on the year, coming off two home losses to Minnesota Duluth last weekend (3-2, 3-1). The Irish are averaging 4.0 goals a game and allowing 2.5 a contest. The power play is 7-for-32 (.219) and the penalty kill is 21-for-25 (.840). Senior defenseman Bobby Nardella leads the Irish with seven assists and 11 points. Cal Burke has a team-best five goals and is second with 10 points. Joe Wegwerth and Nardella are tied for second with four goals each. Cale Morris, the 2018 Big Ten Player of the Year, has started five games this year and has a 2.78 goals-against average and.905 save percentage. BUCKEYE - IRISH CONNECTIONS Paul Pooley, Ohio State s all-time leading scorer, is the associate head coach at Notre Dame, a position he has held since June 3, Pooley, who played for the Buckeyes from , was the Bauer National Player of the Year and CCHA Player of the Year in 1984 when he also earned First Team All-America honors. An Academic All- American as well, he had 270 points (114g, 156a) during his collegiate career. Ohio State retired Pooley s sweater in November 2006 and he was inducted into the school s athletics hall of fame in He began his coaching career as an assistant on the Ohio State staff from Austin Pooley, who is a nephew of Paul Pooley, is a sophomore for the Buckeyes. Austin s father, Perry, Paul s twin brother, was also an All-American and Academic All-American for the Buckeyes. Buckeye director of operations Layne LeBel spent on the coaching staff at Notre Dame. The Irish were the tournament s No. 1 seed, with the Buckeyes No. 2. The Irish opened the scoring at 4:09 of the first period and went ahead 2-0 on a power play goal at 14:30. The Buckeyes got on the board at 6:21 of the second when Brendon Kearney redirected a shot by Matt Miller. Ohio State put 17 shots on goal in the period, with Buckeye goalie Sean Romeo stopping all 10 Irish attempts on goal. Just 1:07 into the third period Miller scored a goal of his own. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, with Romeo making a number of key saves in the final minutes. Shots were 12-9 in favor of Ohio State in the period. The Irish won when Cam Morrison s shot on

3 the fly went in at 9:23. Shots were 9-7 in favor of Notre Dame in OT. For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Irish, Romeo played all 69:23 and had 36 saves. ND goalie Cale Morris had 41 stops in 69:10. There were three power plays in the game. Notre Dame was 1-for-2 and Ohio State did not score on its one chance, which was 22 seconds. LAST TIME OUT Ohio State was vs. Bowling Green last weekend in a home-and-home series. In the first game in Columbus, the Buckeyes trailed 3-0 six minutes into the game, were down 4-0 after 20 minutes and 7-0 after two periods. Mason Jobst and John Wiitala scored in the third for the Buckeyes and the Falcons added the last goal for an 8-2 final. BG won the special teams battle, going 4-for-8 with the man advantage and stopping 7-of-8 Ohio State chances. The game was the first time Ohio State allowed two shorthanded goals since March 4, 2007 vs. Northern Michigan. In game two in Bowling Green, Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a Carson Meyer goal. The lead stood until 1:17 into the third when Bowling Green scored on an unassisted breakaway. The Falcons took a 2-1 lead at 15:10 of the third with a power play goal, but less than two minutes later Buckeye seniors Mason Jobst and Freddy Gerard combined for a 2-on-1 goal to tie the game at two, with Gerard scoring at 17:02. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, including a five-minute sudden death overtime. Buckeye sophomore goalie Tommy Nappier had 28 saves in the win, including 13 in the third period and three in overtime. Meyer and Gerard each had an assist in the game for two-point nights. DUO NAMED SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATES Defenseman Sasha Larocque and goalie Sean Romeo have been named candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. Ohio State is one of two schools with two players on the list of 15 candidates. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The 15 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men s Frozen Final Four in April. Larocque, from Calgary, Alberta, is a two-time captain for the Buckeyes. He has played in 113 games in the Scarlet and Gray, with 29 points, a +37 rating and 201 shot blocks. In 2018 he was a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree and named to the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team as the Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four. An earth sciences major, Larocque is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete. Romeo, a Cary, N.C., native, has started 40 games as a Buckeye, with a 2.23 goals-against average and.921 save percentage in his Ohio State career. In 2018 he was a Mike Richter Award finalist, Second Team All-Big Ten selection and voted the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Midwest Regional. Romeo was the winner of the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the 2018 NCAA Frozen Four, is an Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete. 100 Senior Dakota Joshua skated in career game 100 vs. UMass Oct. 10. He is one of five Buckeyes with 100 or more games played. Mason Jobst is second among Big Ten skaters and in the Top 20 nationally with 120 career games played. The Buckeyes have eight seniors, tying for the third-largest senior class nationally. Ohio State has 16 juniors/seniors combined, matching the largest group of upperclassmen in the NCAA this year. BETWEEN THE PIPES Redshirt senior goalie Sean Romeo and sophomore Tommy Nappier split starts for the first three series this season. Nappier tied his career high with 35 saves in a win over UMass Nov. 10, allowing just one goal. The goal he allowed in the first period ended his individual shutout streak at 195:32, the secondlongest streak in program history. Gabriele had a helper vs. UMass Saturday for his first point in the Scarlet and Gray. Moyse had 11 saves vs. BG last Friday. RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS Senior Mason Jobst and junior Tanner Laczynski are two of 15 returning All-Americans to college hockey this season. They both were unanimous choices for the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list. Jobst, an All-American in 2017, leads all current NCAA players with 134 career points (55g, 79a), the most for a Buckeye since Laczynski, an All-American in 2018, has 84 points (29g, 55a) through his 80 games as a Buckeye, ranking 19th among active NCAA players. Among current NCAA sophomores/juniors/ seniors, Jobst is tied for first with 1.12 career points per game. Laczynski is eighth with 1.05 points per game. Jobst has six points this year (3g, 3a), with at least one in five of six games. Laczynski had a nine-game point streak end in game one vs. BG, with a line in the stretch. WEARING THE C Seniors Mason Jobst and Sasha Larocque were named captains of the Ohio State men s hockey team for the campaign. Jobst is donning the captain s C for the second consecutive year, while Larocque was an alternate captain a season ago. OHIO STATE NO. 1 IN B1G POLL Ohio State was selected first in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, voted on by the league s coaches. Michigan and Notre Dame, which joined the Buckeyes in the 2018 Frozen Four, followed in second and third. Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State rounded out the preseason poll. This is the first time since the CCHA coaches placed the Buckeyes first Ohio State has been No. 1 in a preseason conference coaches poll. #PROBUCKS UPDATE Four Buckeyes - Tanner Fritz (NYI), Max McCormick (OTT), Ryan Dzingel (OTT) and Ryan Kesler (ANA) - started the year with NHL teams. Other Buckeyes who began the year at NHL camps include Matt Bartkowski (MINN), Zac Dalpe (CBJ), Anthony Greco (FLA), David Gust (EDM), Josh Healey (CAL), Sam Jardine (TOR), Matt Tomkins (CHI) and Matthew Weis (VGK). Five of the six seniors from the 2018 squad moved on to professional hockey, with the sixth, Christian Lampasso, completing his engineering degree this fall. Janik Moser signed with Adler Mannheim in the DEL and Weis (who also attended Vegas Knights development camp) is with the AHL Chicago Wolves. Matt Joyaux (Grand Rapids), Kevin Miller (Fort Wayne) and Luke Stork (South Carolina, traded to Maine before the season) all signed with ECHL teams. 3

6 STEVE ROHLIK Head Coach Sixth Season Career record: (through 10/27/18) 7 WYATT EGE Defenseman Redshirt Junior Elk River, Minn. Alaska Anchorage (WCHA)/Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Major: Consumer and Family Financial Services Steve Rohlik, in his first five years as the head coach of the Ohio State men s hockey team, has led the program back into the national picture. The Buckeyes have back-toback NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Frozen Four berth in 2018 (the first for the program in 20 years). Rohlik, the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year runner-up, was named the ninth head coach in program history in April 2013 after spending three years as the Buckeyes associate head coach. He has more than 20 years experience as a Division I coach and during his career has recruited and/or coached two Hobey Baker Award winners, 16 All-Americans including Buckeyes Brady Hjelle, Ryan Dzingel, Mason Jobst and Tanner Laczynski and nearly 20 players who have reached the NHL. He has a career and Ohio State record of through Under Rohlik, the Buckeyes have been outstanding academically, combining as a team to post a grade-point average of 3.0+ throughout his tenure. He has had 36 players combine for 66 Academic All-Big Ten accolades and 43 accumulate 90 Ohio State Scholar-Athlete nods. In , 20 of the Buckeyes were invited to the Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Dinner, 15 earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades and Sean Romeo was recognized with the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the Frozen Four. On the ice, the team has posted back-to-back 20+ win seasons, led the NCAA on the power play in and on the penalty kill in The team has ranked in the Top 10 in scoring offense and in the Top 12 on the power play each of the last three years. The Buckeyes allowed just 2.07 goals a game in , the best mark in program history and the third-best scoring defense in the NCAA for the year. Rohlik joined the Ohio State program in 2010 after 10 seasons on the coaching staff at Minnesota Duluth ( ) where the squad advanced to two NCAA Tournaments, including a Frozen Four appearance in 2004, and won the 2009 WCHA playoff title. He was part of the staff that put together the roster of the Bulldogs 2010 NCAA Championship squad. Rohlik coached three seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, joining the program for its inaugural campaign in In the team s first campaign as a member of the CCHA (its third year as a Division I team), the squad advanced to the 2000 CCHA Championship final. Rohlik spent five years as the head coach at Hill-Murray High School, his alma mater, in Saint Paul, Minn., posting a ledger and leading the squad to two Minnesota State High School Tournaments, including a runner-up finish in the 1993 Tier I event and fourth place in 1997 Class AA before joining the UNO Mavericks. He also served one-season assistant coaching stints at Wisconsin ( ) and Stillwater (Minn.) High School ( ). The team qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of his last three seasons and also captured the 1988 conference playoff championship. Rohlik skated in 166 games for Wisconsin, scoring 34 goals and adding 47 assists for 81 points, and received the team s Fenton Kelsey, Jr. Most Competitive Player honor in He was an eighth-round selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft (No. 151 overall). Rohlik earned his bachelor s degree in communications/journalism from Wisconsin. He and his wife, Julie, have two daughters, Erin and Annie, and a son, Grady. 10
