The teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Columbus. Brendan Burke (play by play), Rob Andringa (analysis) and Fred Pletsch (rinkside) will call the action. It is the first series between the Buckeyes and Spartans as Big Ten foes after meeting as CCHA opponents since The Buckeyes are third nationally in scoring offense, averaging 3.94 goals per game. The team had seven goals in its last game vs. Mercyhurst, the most since 2010, and the 13 goals in the series sweep of the Lakers were the most since Junior Ryan Dzingel is seventh in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten with 1.44 points per game. He leads the B1G with 23 points this season and enters the series with Michigan State on a nine-game point streak. Four of the Buckeyes Top 5 scorers are juniors, with the group first nationally in points per game by a junior class, combining for an average of 6.0 points per outing. Ohio State is 9-3 in Value City Arena this season and is closing a stretch of five-consecutive home games. Fourteen of the team s first 18 games will be played in Columbus. BUCKEYE SNAPSHOT Ohio State, under first-year head coach Steve Rohlik, has won seven of its last nine games after a two-game sweep of Mercyhurst (6-3, 7-2) Dec in its last time out. The Buckeyes are 10-6 on the year, with two losses to Michigan in Big Ten Conference play. The squad is averaging 3.94 goals a game to rank third in scoring in the NCAA and is allowing 2.94 a contest. Ohio State s power play is 17-for-79 (.215) and the penalty kill is 51-for-64 (.797). Junior Ryan Dzingel leads the team with 10 goals and 23 points and is second with 13 assists. Junior Max McCormick is second with seven goals and 18 points, while senior Alex Szczechura and junior Tanner Fritz are tied for third with 17 points each. Fritz has a team-best 14 assists and Szczechura is third with 12 helpers. McCormick is second with seven goals, followed by freshman Nick Schilkey with six. In goal, freshman Matt Tomkins has a 2.76 goals-against average and.910 save percentage in nine games but has not played since suffering an injury early in the first period vs. Niagara Nov. 9. Freshman Logan Davis came on in relief vs. Niagara and started the next four games, posting a 2.21 goals-against average,.909 save percentage and one shutout. Single-game tickets are $11 for adults and $8 for student/youth and seniors. All Ohio State students will receive free admission to regular-season home games with a valid BuckID. Any youth 13 or under wearing their youth jersey can receive one complimentary ticket to any regular season game in Value City Arena. THE MORE THE BUCKEYES SCORE... This season, when the Buckeyes score three goals in a game, all patrons in attendance will receive a coupon for free french fries from participating McDonald s of Columbus and Central Ohio. BUCKEYES VS. SPARTANS In a series that started in 1964, Ohio State trails Michigan State, , including in Columbus. In the last 10 games, each team has five wins and Ohio State is vs. the Spartans in the last 20 matchups. The squads met in East Lansing last season, with the Buckeyes sweeping the Spartans, 1-0 and 3-1, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, THE LAST TIME - BUCKEYES SWEEPS SPARTANS In the only series between the teams last season, Ohio State posted two wins at Michigan State Nov. 30-Dec. 1, Ohio State won 1-0 in game one and then rallied for a 3-1 victory in game two Saturday. Game 1 - Ohio State 1, Michigan State 0: A third-period goal by Ryan Dzingel broke a scoreless tie as Ohio State defeated Michigan State, 1-0, Nov. 30, 2012 in Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. Buckeye senior goalie Brady Hjelle had 31 saves for his third shutout of the season. The teams were scoreless through the first two periods, with each squad having a goal overturned in the middle stanza. Dzingel s gamewinner, assisted by Alex Szczechura and Curtis Gedig, came with just 2:13 remaining in regulation. Game 2 - Ohio State 3, Michigan State 1: Two-point nights from Tyler Lundey, Tanner Fritz and Dzingel, along with 22 saves from Hjelle, helped Ohio State to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory at Michigan State Dec. 1. Ohio State trailed 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes on a goal by MSU s Chris Forfar at 9:20 of the first period. In the second, Fritz tied the game at 6:50 before Lundey gave Ohio State the lead on a goal with just 1:05 left in the period. The Buckeyes held off the Spartans in the third and a shorthanded, empty net tally by Lundey, assisted by Fritz, with 21 seconds remaining sealed the win. Dzingel had two assists in the victory, while Fritz had the sole assist on Lundey s second goal. SPARTAN SYNOPSIS Michigan State is overall this season and in the Big Ten after a 2-2 tie and 3-2 loss at home to Minnesota. The Spartans last played Dec , skating to a 2-2 tie with Michigan Tech and shutting out Michigan, 3-0, in the GLI at Comerica Park in Detroit. MSU averages 2.35 goals a game and allows 2.41 an outing. The power play is 11-for-78 (.141) and the penalty kill is 56-for-70 (.800). The team has put 29.5 shots on goal, allowing 30.9 an outing. Senior Greg Wolfe has a team-best seven goals and 13 points, with freshman Mackenzie MacEachern second with six goals and tied with Lee Reimer for third in points with 10 each. Senior Jake Chelios is first on the squad with nine assists and ranks second with 11 points. Reimer is second with eight helpers. In goal, sophomore Jake Hildebrand is 5-7-2, with a 2.27 goals-against average and.925 save percentage. Senior Will Yanakeff is 1-2-0, with a 2.61 gaa and.918 sv%. ALL-BUCKEYE TEAM The Ohio State men s hockey team is celebrating its first 50 years as a program this season. As part of the festivities, an All-Buckeye Team will be selected through a fan vote. One goalie, two defensemen and three forwards will be selected and recognized at the Buckeyes home game vs. Penn State Feb. 1. Voting began with the goalies, followed by the defensemen. Votes should be based on a player s performance during his time with the Buckeyes and based on his on-ice accomplishments. The nominees are all former Buckeyes who were first or second team all-conference selections and/or Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame inductees. LAST TIME OUT - OHIO STATE SWEEPS MERCYHURST Game One - Ohio State 6, Mercyhurst 3: Ohio State scored four unanswered goals to come from behind and defeat Mercyhurst, 6-3, Dec. 28 in Value City Arena. The teams were tied at 1 after the first period. The Lakers opened the scoring at 5:38 but Ohio State responded 23 seconds later on a junior Chad Niddery goal to deadlock the score. Justin DaSilva put the Buckeyes ahead for the first time at 7:20 of the second but Mercyhurst scored back-to-back goals 1:11 apart to take a 3-2 lead at 10:10 of the period. Nick Schilkey netted a power play goal at 14:30 to tie the game at 3-all after 40 minutes. The game remained tied until junior Tanner Fritz scored on the power play at 12:49 of the third to put the Buckeyes ahead. Freshman David Gust followed with a goal 34 seconds later and Dzingel scored 1:11 after that for a 6-3 Buckeye lead (three goals in a 1:45 span). In all, 12 Buckeyes had at least a point in the game. Junior Nick Oddo led the way with a career-high three assists while juniors Ryan Dzingel and DaSilva and freshman Nick Schilkey each had a goal and an assist for two points. Freshman goalie Christian Frey made 25 saves to pick up the win in his first collegiate appearance. Game Two - Ohio State 7, Mercyhurst 2: Ohio State, behind points from 14 players, skated to a 7-2 victory over Mercyhurst Dec. 29 in Value City Arena. Despite giving up a goal in the first minute of the game, Ohio State led 3-1 after the first 20 minutes on the strength of two goals in the last minute of the period. 3 Szczechura and Oddo scored 32 seconds apart (19:18 and 19:50). The Buckeyes Schilkey netted the only goal of the second to carry a 4-1 lead into the third. Ohio State scored three times in less than four minutes, with scores from Curtis Gedig (power play at 6:50), Niddery (7:33) and Alex Lippincott (10:36), to extend the lead to 7-1 midway through the third. The Lakers scored in the final second of the game for the 7-2 final. Dzingel paced Ohio State with three assists and points, while freshmen Gust and Schilkey and Oddo each had two points on a goal and an assist and Frey had 31 saves in the Buckeye net. B1G PLAY IS HERE This season marks the first campaign for men s hockey as an official Big Ten sport. Ohio State is joined in the league by former Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals Michigan and Michigan State, Wisconsin and Minnesota, who both used to compete in the WCHA, and Penn State, which is in its second year as a varsity program. The teams will each play a 20-game conference schedule, taking on each opponent twice at home and twice on the road. All six teams will travel to Saint Paul, Minn., for the inaugural Big Ten Hockey Tournament March 20-22, 2014 in the Xcel Energy Center. Ohio State opened Big Ten play against Michigan Nov. 29/Dec. 2. The squad will close out the regular season with 18-consecutive Big Ten Conference games, beginning this week against Michigan State. HOME SWEET HOME Ohio State is in Columbus this season, averaging 4.2 goals a game in Value City Arena, while allowing 2.5 an outing. Ryan Dzingel leads the team with nine goals and 20 points in VCA, while Nick Oddo is second with 14 points, sharing the assist lead with Tanner Fritz with 10 each. Fritz is third with 13 points in Columbus and Max McCormick is fourth with a line. In all, 12 of the Buckeyes first 16 games this season were in Columbus. Overall, 14 of the first 18 will be played in Value City Arena. The squad has had just one night on the road (prior to the Big Ten opener at Michigan) and left the state for just two games - at Robert Morris and at Michigan. The other two road games were at Miami and at Bowling Green. The squad s first two-game road trip is Jan when it plays at Minnesota in its first two-game Big Ten series on the road. SPECIAL TEAMS Ohio State was 3-for-7 (.429) on the power play in its series vs. Mercyhurst and is now 17-for-79 (.215) this season, ranking second among Big Ten teams and 14th in the NCAA. Ryan Dzingel and Max McCormick lead the Big Ten with eight power play points each and Alex Szczechura is tied for fifth. McCormick and Szczechura have a league-best six power play assists, while Dzingel and Nick Schilkey are tied for fourth in the Big Ten with three power play goals each. Ohio State was assessed just one penalty in each game vs. Mercyhurst, facing two power plays in the series. The Buckeyes are 31-for-33 (.939) on the penalty kill in the last nine games combined, allowing a goal in just two of the nine contests. On the year, the team is averaging 10.7 penalty minutes a game. The squad has single-digit penalty minutes in eight outings and more than 20 minutes just twice. KESLER NAMED TO U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM Ryan Kesler, who played for Ohio State in , was named to the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Team, USA Hockey announced. Kesler, who plays for the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL, also skated for Team USA in the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, the first former Buckeye to represent the United States in the Olympics. In the 2010 Games, Kesler had two goals (including scoring in the gold medal game) as the United States won the silver medal. The second-highest draft pick in Ohio State history when he was selected by Vancouver in the first round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft (No. 23 overall), Kesler is in his ninth full season in the NHL, all with the Canucks. Andre Signoretti competed for Italy in the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, the only other Ohio State letterwinner to skate in the Olympics. LIGHTING THE LAMP The Buckeyes are averaging 3.94 goals a game, ranking third nationally in scoring offense (second in the Big Ten behind Minnesota). The squad has four or more goals in nine of the last 13 games and at least three in all but two games this year. Ohio State scored 13 goals in its two-game sweep of Mercyhurst in its last time out. It was the most goals scored by the Buckeyes in a two-game set since downing Bentley, 10-1 and 3-2 in overtime, Dec , The Buckeyes are 6-1 this year when scoring first and 4-5 when allowing the first tally. The second period has been the best for the Buckeyes, who have outscored opponents, 26-11, in the middle stanza. The team has scored 15 goals in the first period, allowing 12, while the Buckeyes have outscored their foes, 22-19, in the final 20 minutes. The seven goals vs. Mercyhurst Dec. 29 were the most for the squad since scoring eight March 6, 2010 vs. Notre Dame. He is seventh in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten in points per game (1.44) and ranks first in the league with 23 points on the year (tying for 19th nationally). Dzingel has a team-best 10 goals to rank second in the B1G and he is tied for 13th in the NCAA with.62 goals per outing. He had a career-high eight-game goal scoring streak ended vs. Mercyhurst Dec. 29. Dzingel has a point in all but two games this year, with multiple points in six games (including each of the last three). Dzingel shared the team scoring lead as a freshman and had a Buckeye-best 16 goals and 38 points as a sophomore last season. He was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week after the series vs. Mercyhurst. Against the Lakers, Dzingel had a league-high tying five points, with a goal and four assists. He had a goal and an assist in the opener Dec. 28 before matching his career high with three assists in game two Dec. 29. SHOOTING GALLERY Ohio State is averaging 36.0 shots per game, ranking second in the NCAA. The team has 40 or more shots in six games, including each of the last three. Niagara had an Ohio State opponent season-low 16 Nov. 9. BETWEEN THE PIPES Three freshmen have started games - and picked up wins - between the pipes for Ohio State this season. Christian Frey was added to the Ohio State roster as a goaltender in December and started both games for the Buckeyes vs. Mercyhurst. He had 25 saves on 28 shots Dec. 28 in his first collegiate start and then made 31 saves on 33 Laker attempts Dec. 29. He is 2-0-0, with a 2.52 goals-against average and.918 save percentage. Matt Tomkins started eight of the Buckeyes first 10 games (and played in nine) before suffering an injury Nov. 9 vs. Niagara that forced him to miss the next four games. He returned to the lineup vs. Mercyhurst but did not see game action. He is on the year, with a 2.76 goals-against average and.910 save percentage. Logan Davis, who started the season as the Buckeyes third goalie, came on in relief Nov. 9 vs. Niagara and started the next four games. Aaron Kahn, who began the season with the Ohio State Club Team, was added to the roster as a backup goalie in November. He has not seen game action. Aaron Gretz, a catcher for the Ohio State baseball team who joined the Buckeye hockey roster in November, returned to the baseball team as the squad begins preparations for its spring season. He dressed as a backup goalie for the series with Canisius and Michigan. STREAKING Eight Buckeyes carry point streaks into the series vs. Michigan State. Ryan Dzingel (9 games, ), Tanner Fritz (5 games, 2-7-9), Max McCormick (5 games, 2-4-6) and David Gust (4 games, 3-2-5) all have streaks of longer than two games. Anthony Greco (0-2-2), Chad Niddery (2-0-2), Nick Oddo (1-4-5) and Nick Schilkey (2-2-4) each had a point in both games last weekend. Gust is on a team-best three-game goal streak and Dzingel leads the team with a three-game assist streak. LED BY THE JUNIORS The Buckeye junior class is second in the nation with 96 combined points (combining for 20 points in the sweep of Mercyhurst) and leads the NCAA with an average of 6.00 points per game this season (through 16 games). Four of the Buckeyes top five scorers - Ryan Dzingel, Max McCormick, Tanner Fritz and Nick Oddo - are juniors, with the lone exception senior Alex Szczechura. CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE FRESHMEN All seven Buckeye freshmen have seen game action this season, with the four skaters all picking up at least one goal and one assist. Nick Schilkey is first with 11 points, ranking fifth among all Big Ten rookies. He had a goal and an assist for two points in each game vs. Mercyhurst and has three two-point games this season. David Gust carries a three-game point streak into the Michigan State series, with at least one goal in each of the last three games. He had a line vs. Mercyhurst, with his second career two-point night Dec. 29. Drew Brevig leads the Buckeye defensemen in scoring with seven points on a goal and six assists. He is second in scoring among Big Ten rookie blueliners and tied for 17th in the NCAA. All three freshmen goalies - Logan Davis, Christian Frey and Matt Tomkins - have picked up at least one win. Defenseman Josh Healey is fifth in the Big Ten with 2.00 blocks per game. ODDO ON THE PLUS SIDE Nick Oddo was named Big Ten Third Star of the Week after a league-high tying five points, with four assists, in the sweep of Mercyhurst. He had a career-high three assists in game one Dec. 28, marking the second three-point game of his career and the season (Oct. 25 vs. Robert Morris) and then had the gamewinning goal and an assist Dec. 29. Oddo leads Ohio State with a +13 rating, tying for fifth in the Big Ten and the only non-minnesota player in the Top 8. He is +1 or better in eight games this year. He is tied for 19th nationally in plus/minus rating. Oddo is fifth on the team and tied for 14th in the Big Ten with 14 points. He is seventh in the Big Ten with.62 assists per game and ranks ninth among all league players with 10 assists. Oddo already has a career-high 10 assists and 14 points this season. He had a line last season when he was limited to 22 games because of injury and five goals and five assists for 10 points in 32 games as a freshman. McCORMICK ON THE SCORESHEET Junior Max McCormick has a point in all but three games this season, with four multiple-point nights. He enters the Michigan State series on a five -game point streak, with two goals and four assists in the stretch, including a helper in each game vs. Mercyhurst. McCormick is second on the team and tied for sixth in the Big Ten with 18 points, He is tied for eighth in the B1G with seven goals and seventh (tied) with 11 assists. A preseason Big Ten Player to Watch, McCormick had career highs of 15 goals, 16 assists and 31 points last year. DASILVA PICKS UP POINTS, BLOCKS SHOTS Junior Justin DaSilva, who had one goal in his first 63 games, scored his fourth of the season Dec. 28 vs. Mercyhurst, adding an assist for his second career two-point game and first since Feb. 1, 2013 vs. Notre Dame. DaSilva has a career-high four goals and six points this season. He had a personal-best four assists as a freshman. He is tied for 10th in the Big Ten in scoring among defensemen. He is second in the Big Ten and first on the team with 32 blocked shots this season and ranks first in the league and ninth nationally with 2.46 blocks per game. He has at least one blocked shot in all 13 games he has played, including six Nov. 29 at Michigan. SZCZECHURA POSTING POINTS Senior Alex Szczechura has a point in seven of the last nine games, with a line in the stretch. Szczechura is tied for third on the team with 17 points this season and ranks third with 12 assists. He is tied for ninth in scoring among all Big Ten players, ranking sixth with 1.06 points per game. He is tied for sixth in the league in helpers and fifth with.75 assists per outing, tying for 24th in the NCAA. He has a point in all but five games this season. He is just six points shy of the career-high 23 he had last season and has already surpassed the then-personal best 11 helpers he had a year ago. FACEOFF WINNER Junior Darik Angeli leads the Big Ten and is fourth nationally in faceoff winning percentage. He has won 50-of-78 draws (.641). Angeli has four goals, four assists and eight points this season and has played in 15-of-16 games. GOALS FOR NIDDERY Junior Chad Niddery has a career-high four goals this season after scoring once in his first 49 games. Niddery scored a goal in each game vs. Mercyhurst Dec and was +1 in each game. DALRYMPLE AMONG +/- LEADERS Sophomore Craig Dalrymple is second on the squad with a +10 mark this season, ranking ninth among all Big Ten players. He was +5 in the series vs. Mercyhurst Dec , tying his career high with a +3 mark in game two. Dalrymple has six assists this season, tying for 10th among conference blueliners in points. WJC WATCH Janik Moser, who signed a National Letter of Intent in November and is scheduled to join the Buckeye program in the fall, played for Germany in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden. A native of Mannheim, Germany, who skates for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL, Moser was Germany s Player of the Game after scoring a power play goal vs. Canada. He played in all seven

5 games for Germany in the tournament and had a goal and two assists for three points. EVERYBODY IN Every Buckeye who has skated in more than three games has at least one point this year and all but one overall have gotten on the scoresheet. UP NEXT Ohio State will travel for its next two Big Ten Conference series, playing at Minnesota Jan and at Wisconsin Jan The first game at Minnesota is the Hockey City Classic and will be played outdoors in TCF Bank Stadium. It will be the third outdoor game for the program, after playing Wisconsin in Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., in February 2006 and taking on Michigan at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, in January BUCKEYES IN THE PROS In the NHL: Ryan Kesler (Vancouver), Zac Dalpe (Vancouver) RJ Umberger (Columbus), Nate Guenin (Colorado) and Matt Bartkowski (Boston). Tyson Strachan (Washington) and John Albert (Winnipeg) have both played NHL games this season but are currently in the AHL. Heeter was named AHL Player of the Week after three wins - with two shutouts - in the last week. BEHIND THE BENCH Steve Rohlik is in his first season at the helm of the Buckeyes and as a collegiate head coach. He spent the last three years as the associate head coach for the Buckeyes after 10 years on the staff at Minnesota Duluth. Brett Larson joined the team over the summer as the associate head coach. An alum of Minnesota Duluth who spent time behind the bench with his alma mater, including during its NCAA title run in 2010, Larson was the head coach and general manager of the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL the last two years. BIG TEN STANDINGS Joe Exter returns for a third season with the Buckeyes. A standout goalie who led Buckeye goalie Brady Hjelle to first team All-America honors last season, Exter came to Ohio State from the U.S. National Team Development Program. COACHES SHOW STARTS SOON Coach Rohlik s weekly radio show is set to begin Jan. 15 and will run at 6 p.m. each Wednesday through March 19 on 1460 ESPN AM in Columbus. CAPTAIN GEDIG JOINED BY ALTERNATES DZINGEL AND FRITZ After a team vote, Buckeye senior Curtis Gedig was named captain of the squad. He will be joined by juniors Ryan Dzingel and Tanner Fritz, who will wear the alternate captain A on their sweaters. Gedig and Dzingel will be wearing a letter for a secondconsecutive year after serving as captains for a majority of the season. Fritz wore a C for a few series last year. BUCKEYE BROADCASTS This season, 14 of the Buckeyes 20 Big Ten Conference games - at least one from 9 of 10 series - will be televised, with coverage on BTN, ESPNEWS, NBCSN, SportsTime Ohio and Fox Sports (North, Detroit and Wisconsin). Home games not on television will be streamed online through the Buckeye Vision subscription package on OhioStateBuckeyes.com and/ or BTN.com. The availability of non-televised road games online is dependent on the host school. Games on BTN and Fox networks are available through the BTN2Go app and website.
