FALCONS The No. 4 Ohio State men s hockey team takes on No. 15 Bowling Green in a home-andhome series this weekend. The Buckeyes (3-1- 0, B1G) and Falcons (4-1-0, WCHA) will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Columbus and at 7:07 p.m. Saturday in Bowling Green. The game Friday will be streamed online through the BTN Plus subscription package on BTN2Go. Saturday s contest will be streamed through FloHockey.tv. BUCKEYE NOTES TO KNOW The game Friday ends a three-game homestand for the Buckeyes, who will be on the road for the next five contests, including the B1G opening series at Notre Dame next week. Ohio State has scored three goals in each of its first four games of the season. The Buckeyes are coming off a split with UMass. The loss ended a 12-game unbeaten streak in regular season non-conference games for Ohio State. Of the 33 Division I men s hockey players from Ohio this year, 13 play for the Buckeyes (7) and Falcons (6) combined. The Buckeyes were picked first in the Big Ten preseason coaches poll, with three Buckeyes - Mason Jobst, Dakota Joshua and Tanner Laczynski - garnering player to watch accolades. 2 IN THE POLLS In the USCHO poll Monday, the Buckeyes moved to No. 4 after splitting their series with Massachusetts. The Buckeyes opened the year at No. 3 before taking over the top spot the next two polls. No. 4 Ohio State is one of six Big Ten teams receiving votes in the USCHO poll, joining No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 10 Penn State, No. 12 Michigan and No. 14 Wisconsin. In this week s USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, the Buckeyes are ranked fourth. Ohio State started the year No. 2 and was ranked first the last two weeks. Fellow Big Ten schools No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 5 Minnesota, No. 9 Penn State, No. 12 Michigan and No. 13 Wisconsin join Ohio State in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. Ohio State is one of three schools with its men s and women s teams ranked in the Top 5 of the USCHO.com poll. The Ohio State women are also ranked fourth. The Minnesota Duluth men are No. 3 and the UMD women are No. 5, while Minnesota s men s team is No. 5 and the Gopher women are No. 3. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING Ohio State is averaging 3.0 goals a game and allowing 2.25 per contest. The power play is 3-for-18 (.167) and the penalty kill is 14-for-17 (.824) Tanner Laczynski leads the squad with three assists and five points. Carson Meyer has a team-best three assists and is tied with Mason Jobst (2g, 2a) for second with four points each. The Buckeyes led the NCAA on the penalty kill last season and were the NCAA statistical champion on the power play in In the last three years combined, Ohio State is the only school to rank in the Top 5 nationally in goals scored (412), goals per game (3.55) and power play (.257). OSU VS. BGSU - THE SERIES Ohio State and Bowling Green have met 182 times, with the series beginning in The Falcons lead the overall series between Ohio State and Bowling Green, , including in Bowling Green. In Columbus, the Buckeyes have the edge, Ohio State and Bowling Green were founding members of the CCHA in The Buckeyes left and skated as an independent in and , but rejoined the Falcons in the CCHA in and remained in the league until it disbanded in The teams last met Oct , 2016 in a home-and-home series. Ohio State captured game one 5-4 on the road and won game two at home, 6-1. OSU VS. BGSU - THE LAST TIME Ohio State swept Bowling Green Oct , 2016 in the last series between the teams. Game 1 (Ohio State 5, Bowling Green 4): The Buckeyes opened the scoring just 1:10 into the game on a goal from Ronnie Hein. The Falcons tied it at 3:23 with a power play goal but Buckeye Kevin Miller scored at 10:37 to put the Buckeyes back ahead. Buckeye Mason Jobst gave Ohio State a two-goal lead early in the second but the Falcons scored three times before the period ended to carry a 4-3 lead into the second intermission. Just 34 seconds into the third Buckeye captain Nick Schilkey tied the game at four and at 9:38 Tanner Laczynski put the Buckeyes ahead again (5-4). Both goals came on the power play. Each team had three power play goals in the game, with the teams combining for 12 power plays. Shots were in favor of the Falcons. Game 2 (Ohio State 6, Bowling Green 1): The Buckeyes took control of the game early, opening the scoring with a power play goal at 5:38 from Nick Schilkey and adding tallies at 11:51 (David Gust) and 15:56 (Matthew Weis) to carry a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Each team scored once in the second, with Ohio State s goal by Matt Joyaux coming at 4:43 and BG tallying at 7:48. Ohio State added goals at 8:07 and 16:04 of the third, by Schilkey and Tanner Laczynski respectively, for the 6-1 final. Each team had seven power plays, with Ohio State notching the only goal with the man advantage. THE FALCONS Bowling Green enters the weekend 4-1. The team opened the year with an 8-2 win at Mercyhurst before a 6-2 win over Western Michigan. The Falcons split with Robert Morris last weekend, with a 3-2 road loss and 6-0 home win. Tuesday, BG beat WMU, 4-1. The Falcons are third nationally in scoring offense, averaging 5.2 goals per game, are tied for seventh in team defense (1.6 goals allowed per game) and rank fifth on the power play (8-for-26,.308). Max Johnson and Brandon Kruse share the team lead with nine points each. Kruse has a team-high seven assists, followed by Johnson with six. Stephen Baylis is first with four goals, followed by Johnson, Casey Linkenheld and Conor Ford with three. BREAKING THE ICE Ohio State will compete in the 2019 Ice Breaker Tournament at the Huntington Center in Toledo Oct , Bowling Green is the host school for 2019 and will be joined by the Buckeyes, RIT and Western Michigan. The event is sponsored by the Hockey Commissioners Association and managed by College Hockey Inc. and began in The Buckeyes and Falcons could meet on day two of the tournament. A PENALTY SHOT X 2 Senior Mason Jobst scored on a penalty shot at Arizona State Oct. 13. It was the first converted penalty shot for the Buckeyes since Hugo Boisvert tallied vs. Miami Jan. 12, Since that Boisvert goal, Ohio State had just six penalty shot attempts, with the last a missed shot by Jobst Oct. 30, 2015 vs. Mercyhurst. The game after Jobst s penalty shot goal, 2

3 Carson Meyer converted a shot of his own, scoring vs. UMass last Friday night. He had a penalty shot chance last year with Miami, but did not score. Ohio State has two of the four penalty shot goals scored in the NCAA this season. LAST TIME OUT Ohio State split a series with UMass in Columbus last weekend. Game 1 (UMass 6, Ohio State 3): The Buckeyes fell behind 3-0, with UMass scoring at 10:17 and 14:28 (power play) of the first and 6:19 of the second. Carson Meyer then scored back-to-back goals for the Buckeyes for a one-goal game at 18:22 of the second. The Minutemen pushed ahead 4-2 at 8:00 of the third with a power play tally but Ohio State answered 1:09 later to again get within one. UMass converted a 2-on-1 at 15:43 of the third and Ohio State pulled its goalie early down by two, with the Minutemen scoring an empty netter at 16:56 for the final tally. Ohio State outshot UMass, 38-27, in the game, including in the second and third periods combined. Game Two (Ohio State 3, UMass 1): The Buckeyes and Minutemen scored 13 seconds apart in the first period. UMass took the lead at 6:00 and Ohio State responded at 6:13, with Tanner Laczynski scoring. The teams combined for 35 shots in the second period (UMass 18, Ohio State 17), but the goalies held strong. With time winding down in the third and the teams skating 4 4, Wyatt Ege carried the puck into the UMass zone. He passed to Laczynski in the slot, who chipped the puck over the UMass goalie with 1:22 left in regulation for the eventual gamewinner. Mason Jobst sealed the win with an empty net goal at 19:12. Tommy Nappier made 11 of his 35 saves in the third period. BETWEEN THE PIPES Redshirt senior goalie Sean Romeo and sophomore Tommy Nappier split starts for the first two series this season. Nappier tied his career high with 35 saves in the win over UMass Saturday, allowing just one goal. The goal he allowed in the first period ended his individual shutout streak at 195:32, the second-longest streak in program history. It is behind only the 197:06 streak by Christian Frey Dec. 18, 2015-Jan. 9, Senior Dakota Joshua skated in career game 100 Saturday vs. UMass. He is one of five Buckeyes with 100 or more games played. Mason Jobst is second among Big Ten skaters and tied for 18th nationally with 118 career games played. The Buckeyes have eight seniors, tying for the third-largest senior class nationally. Ohio State has 16 juniors/seniors combined, matching the largest group of upperclassmen in the NCAA this year. FIRSTS Seven Buckeyes have skated in their first games in the Scarlet and Gray so far this season - junior transfer Carson Meyer, sophomores Collin Peters and Grant Gabriele and freshmen Matthew Jennings, Ryan O Connell, Quinn Preston and Gustaf Westlund. Meyer had a goal and an assist in his first game with the Scarlet and Gray Oct. 12 at Arizona State. Westlund had a helper in game one vs. UMass last Friday for the first point for a Buckeye freshman. Gabriele had a helper vs. UMass Saturday for his first point in the Scarlet and Gray. Redshirt senior goalie Sean Romeo had an assist Friday vs. the Minutemen, his first assist as a Buckeye and his first since his freshman year at Maine. RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS Senior Mason Jobst and junior Tanner Laczynski are two of 15 returning All- Americans to college hockey this season. They both were unanimous choices for the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list. Jobst, an All-American in 2017, leads all current NCAA players with 132 career points (54g, 78a). He is tied with Paul Caponigri ( ) for the most points by a Buckeye since Laczynski, an All-American in 2018, has 84 points (29g, 55a) through his first 79 games BIG TEN STANDINGS CONFERENCE OVERALL GP W L T SW Pts. Among current NCAA sophomores/juniors/ seniors, Jobst is first with 1.12 career points per game. Laczynski is tied for fifth with 1.06 points per outing. Jobst has four points this year (2g, 2a), with at least one in three of four games. Laczynski has a team-high three assists and five points. He is on a nine-game point streak dating to last season, with a line in the stretch. WEARING THE C Seniors Mason Jobst and Sasha Larocque have been named captains of the Ohio State men s hockey team for the campaign. Jobst is donning the captain s C for the second consecutive year, while Larocque was an alternate captain a season ago. OHIO STATE NO. 1 IN B1G POLL Ohio State was selected first in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, voted on by the league s coaches. Michigan and Notre Dame, which joined the Buckeyes in the 2018 Frozen Four, followed in second and third. Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State rounded out the preseason poll. This is the first time since the CCHA coaches placed the Buckeyes first Ohio State has been No. 1 in a preseason conference coaches poll. #PROBUCKS UPDATE Four Buckeyes - Tanner Fritz (NYI), Max McCormick (OTT), Ryan Dzingel (OTT) and Ryan Kesler (ANA) - started the year with NHL teams. Other Buckeyes who began the year at NHL camps include Matt Bartkowski (MINN), Zac Dalpe (CBJ), Anthony Greco (FLA), David Gust (EDM), Josh Healey (CAL), Sam Jardine (TOR), Matt Tomkins (CHI) and Matthew Weis (VGK). Five of the six seniors from the 2018 squad moved on to professional hockey, with the sixth, Christian Lampasso, completing his engineering degree this fall. Janik Moser signed with Adler Mannheim in the DEL and Weis (who also attended Vegas Knights development camp) is with the AHL Chicago Wolves. Matt Joyaux (Grand Rapids), Kevin Miller (Fort Wayne) and Luke Stork (South Carolina, traded to Maine before the season) all signed with ECHL teams. 10 STEVE ROHLIK Head Coach Sixth Season Career record: WYATT EGE Defenseman Redshirt Junior Elk River, Minn. Alaska Anchorage (WCHA)/Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Major: Consumer and Family Financial Services Steve Rohlik, in his first five years as the head coach of the Ohio State men s hockey team, has led the program back into the national picture. The Buckeyes have back-toback NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Frozen Four berth in 2018 (the first for the program in 20 years). Rohlik, the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year runner-up, was named the ninth head coach in program history in April 2013 after spending three years as the Buckeyes associate head coach. He has more than 20 years experience as a Division I coach and during his career has recruited and/or coached two Hobey Baker Award winners, 16 All-Americans including Buckeyes Brady Hjelle, Ryan Dzingel, Mason Jobst and Tanner Laczynski and nearly 20 players who have reached the NHL. He has a career and Ohio State record of through Under Rohlik, the Buckeyes have been outstanding academically, combining as a team to post a grade-point average of 3.0+ throughout his tenure. He has had 36 players combine for 66 Academic All-Big Ten accolades and 43 accumulate 90 Ohio State Scholar-Athlete nods. In , 20 of the Buckeyes were invited to the Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Dinner, 15 earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades and Sean Romeo was recognized with the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the Frozen Four. On the ice, the team has posted back-to-back 20+ win seasons, led the NCAA on the power play in and on the penalty kill in The team has ranked in the Top 10 in scoring offense and in the Top 12 on the power play each of the last three years. The Buckeyes allowed just 2.07 goals a game in , the best mark in program history and the third-best scoring defense in the NCAA for the year. Rohlik joined the Ohio State program in 2010 after 10 seasons on the coaching staff at Minnesota Duluth ( ) where the squad advanced to two NCAA Tournaments, including a Frozen Four appearance in 2004, and won the 2009 WCHA playoff title. He was part of the staff that put together the roster of the Bulldogs 2010 NCAA Championship squad. Rohlik coached three seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, joining the program for its inaugural campaign in In the team s first campaign as a member of the CCHA (its third year as a Division I team), the squad advanced to the 2000 CCHA Championship final. Rohlik spent five years as the head coach at Hill-Murray High School, his alma mater, in Saint Paul, Minn., posting a ledger and leading the squad to two Minnesota State High School Tournaments, including a runner-up finish in the 1993 Tier I event and fourth place in 1997 Class AA before joining the UNO Mavericks.
