5 Season utlook T he hio field hockey team enters the 2008 season coming off of back-to-back Mid-American Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships, as well as a victory in the NCAA Tournament play-in game against American University. This year, the Bobcats goals won t be any different, as head coach Neil Macmillan looks for more success in the MAC, as well as new success in the NCAA Tournament. Having had a taste of the NCAA Tournament last year, we re very motivated to get back and have a win in the tournament, Macmillan said. We were so close last year in the game against Michigan [in the round of 16]. I think that bitter taste is going to help motivate us, and especially our senior class, to be even more successful this year. Despite winning the MAC a season ago, Macmillan doesn t consider hio the defending MAC Champions. We don t have to defend anything. That was in the past. We have to move on. The feeling on the team is that we have to prove ourselves and show that the last two years wasn t a case of good luck here and there. The players want to show they re a team that can continue their past success, the coach said. Macmillan was quick to point out that the team s two years of success pales in comparison to other programs such as hio volleyball s five consecutive regular season MAC titles and four of the last five MAC Tournament titles, and Ball State University s previous dominance in MAC field hockey, when the Cardinals won nine of the first 14 MAC Tournaments. The Bobcats will rely heavily on their seniors if the team hopes to continue their recent success and advance deeper into the NCAA Tournament. Leading the way will be goalkeeper and 2007 MAC Player of the Year Jessie Martin, who has started in goal for hio since her sophomore season. In 2007, Martin started all but one game and had a 1.20 goals against average. She s our leader on and off the field. Her play has developed immensely and she s grown as a person and a leader, Macmillan said. The Coetzee sisters, both All-MAC performers in 2007, will lead the Bobcat attack, as the duo combined to score 21 goals a season ago and have started for hio since their freshman year. Macmillan described the sisters as driven and determined, with Rachelle Coetzee controlling the middle of the field, while Estienne Coetzee can pop up and score goals from many positions, including the wings, which Macmillan hopes she will do more of this season. Anchoring the defense will be another All-MAC selection in Nikki Gnozzio, who was second on the team with seven assists last season. She s an athletic player, who can match up to anyone with speed, and has improved her defense considerably. Rounding out the senior class is Lauren Stahlhuth, who started all 23 games in 2007 and has started all three seasons at hio, along with Gnozzio. Her coach described her as a dependable, solid player who will do whatever task she is given. As for the juniors, Macmillan hopes the group will step up and increase their role on the team. Katelyn Shelley, Marcy Dull and Nina Bruno all saw significant time on the field a year ago and are driven to improve their production on the pitch. Dull notched 10 goals, while Shelley added six in As for Taylor Anderson and Patty Donahue, Macmillan expects them to become regular contributors as they have increased their understanding of the game and the system hio uses. The sophomore class is a group that is developing and looking to earn more time on the field. Paige Herr, who can play both in the midfield and at defense, and Katherine Ballard, who has great athleticism and speed and has developed her individual skills in the offseason, have the most experience of the group. Ballard will be looked upon to contribute on the front line. Brittany Zorn has great individual skills, including a strong hit, who will help in defense, while Meredith Hurst and Louzeth Schutte have both worked hard in the offseason, which Macmillan hopes will pay dividends for them and the team. Courtney Seiders, a transfer from ld Dominion University who will sit out 2008 per NCAA transfer rules, rounds out the class and will battle for the starting goalkeeper spot in The freshman class adds great athleticism and has a good knowledge of the game, which should allow them to develop into hio s system nicely. Brooke Edwards, Jenna Green and Laine Greenawalt could all play a variety of positions for the Bobcats after gaining some understanding of what hio s about. The final newcomer, Jen McGill, will play behind Martin in goal, but is very aggressive and athletic and should develop nicely over her career, Macmillan noted. The biggest strength of the team is our ability to adapt from game to game, the coach said. The key to our success has been that we play as a team on the field, rather than individuals doing their job. The schedule will make success a challenge however, as their non-conference slate includes five opponents who qualified for the 2007 NCAA Tournament, including Final Four participant Wake Forest University. Eight of the team s 10 out-of-conference opponents were ranked at some point during the 2007 season, with six finishing the year in the top 18 nationally in the STX/NFHCA poll. ur aspirations are to compete at the highest level and to do that you have to play the very best teams, Macmillan said H I F I E L D H C K E Y 5
