2 SEASON PREVIEW The Boston College women s ice hockey team will bring a new look to Kelley Rink this winter. Head Coach Tom Mutch returns 12 players to his squad and welcomes the addition of 10 newcomers. With only five seniors, the Eagles will look to younger players to step up and make an immediate impact on the team. The Boston College women s hockey team was selected to finish third in the Hockey East Preseason Coaches Poll. The Eagles received 20 votes in the poll by the conference s head coaches. Never before has the women s ice hockey team been ranked as high as third in the preseason conference rankings. Mutch hopes this season will feature the program s first Hockey East playoff appearance, which requires a fourth place finish or better in the conference. Our goal right now is to make the playoffs in the Hockey East and continue to climb as a program and to keep moving forward, Mutch said. Entering their third season in Hockey East, the Eagles will look to build on last season s conference record. With more experience under the upperclassmen s belts and the addition of 10 talented players, BC is likely to make a difference in the conference. I think the older kids are going to have to steer the boat, and hopefully the younger kids will push the boat for us, Mutch said. I think everyone of them (newcomers) will have an immediate impact because our numbers are so small. FORWARDS Three seniors will lead the offensive charge for the Eagles. Senior co-captain Kerri Sanders looks to pick up where she left off last season. The Saugus, Mass. native netted a team-leading, nine goals last year. Sanders played in all 31 games and tallied the game-winning goal and an assist against Quinnipiac on January 10. Heidi Seidewand will join Sanders on offense. The senior appeared in 30 games and racked up five goals and seven assists for 12 points. The forward will provide speed and leadership to the young Eagle attack. Lindsey Bazzone rounds out the senior forwards. Bazzone has been a solid force in BC s offense for the past three seasons. Last year, the Tampa, Fla. native tallied five assists and one goal. She assisted on gamewinning goals in back-to-back games against Union and Brown (Nov. 2 and 8). Two juniors will also add depth and experience to the offensive line. Both Sarah Courtney and Nancy Gillis played in all 31 games and will look to add a scoring punch for BC this season. Courtney led the team with 16 points on eight goals and assists. Gillis returns to the team after her first full season on the ice. An all-around athlete, she joined the team after playing midfield on the lacrosse team her freshman year. She scored five goals and added two assists for seven points last season. One of only two freshmen to play in all 31 games last season, Michelle Lombardi returns to right wing for the Eagles. She proved last season she had the ability to step up and make a difference of the BC squad with four goals and six assists on the year. The Eagles welcome five freshmen forwards. Deborah Spillane, Sarah Feldman, Lindsay Wright, Colleen Harris, and Lee-J Mirasolo are all expected to see significant playing time for BC. Spillane, a center from Franklin, Mass., scored 15 goals and tallied 26 assists during her two seasons on Franklin s boy s varsity squad. The freshman was named to the USCHO All- American Rookie Team, which is the first time in program history that a BC freshman has been honored in this preseason poll. Spillane is the only rookie among Hockey East member teams to receive this preseason accolade. Feldman and Harris are also expected to step right in and add scoring for the Eagles. Feldman enters BC after a strong four-year career at Tabor Academy and two years with the US Hockey National Development Camp. Harris, a right wing, played for four-time New York State champions, the Buffalo Bisons. The Kenmore, N.Y. native also participated in the US Hockey National Development Camp with Feldman. Wright and Mirasolo complete the freshmen class of forwards. Mirasolo dominated the offense at Wakefield High School for four seasons. She scored 110 goals and notched 50 assists in her high school career. Wright joins the Eagles from Calgary, Alberta. She scored 32 goals and tallied 44 assists in season for her club team, the PSA Roughriders. DEFENSE The defense will have only two upperclassmen on the blue line this season. Senior co-captain Sarah Carlson will take charge from the back for the Eagles. A rock solid and consistent player, Carlson has not missed a game in her three seasons with BC. Carlson landed five assists and one goal last season for the Eagles. BOSTON COLLEGE 2 WOMEN S ICE HOCKEY

3 SEASON PREVIEW I think there is going to be no doubt that Sarah Carlson is definitely going to have to lead this charge, Mutch said. Defensively, she s so solid and her leadership quality is really coming out as being an unbelievable person. Junior Jill McInnis will have to continue to use her strength and speed to protect BC s net this season. As a sophomore McInnis played in all 31 games and tallied six assists and added one goal from defense. And, [with] Jill McInnis, we re going to throw her back there, and I think she can be a real solid defensive force that can add some scoring punch to us, Mutch said. Jessica Wilson completes last season s returners on defense. The sophomore was one of only two freshmen to appear in all 31 game s last season. Sophomore Krystal Strassman and freshman Cristin Stuart look to step right in and offer strong support behind the forwards. Strassman transferred after one season at Brown University, where she played in 24 games last season and scored four goals and recorded 10 assists. Stuart comes to the Heights after playing one season in the Midwest Elite Hockey League. In four seasons at John Marshall High School, Stuart was elected team captain and awarded all-conference honors. Blood comes to Boston College after being named the defensive MVP and earning all-conference honors on the varsity hockey team at Wayzata High School. Blood also played for the Minnesota Thoroughbreds for two seasons and helped lead the team to a MWHL Championship. GOALTENDERS Senior Lisa Davis enters the season in second place on BC s alltime saves list with 2,163. Davis has compiled a record over three years in Chestnut Hill. Last season, she was awarded a Hockey East All- Star Honorable Mention and accumulated 30 or more saves in a game 10 times. In three seasons, Davis maintains a.900 save percentage and a goals against average of Davis looks to compete with junior Alison Quandt and sophomore Christine Moynihan for time in the net. Quandt appeared in two games last season, finishing with a 1-1 record and earning the Hockey East Defensive Player-of-the-Week award on March 15 for stopping 43 of 46 shots against Providence. In two years at the Heights, Quandt has compiled a mark and maintains a.887 save percentage. Last season, Moynihan made 98 saves in five games and earned a 1-3 record in net. In BC s 4-1 victory over Union on Nov. 2, Moynihan made 42 saves. Notably, the sophomore goaltender earned the Athletic Director s Award for Academic Achievement. In the season the Eagles will need to take advantage of their strong leadership and young talent. Coach Mutch is focused on landing a post season spot. I just hope we can get better everyday and really strive to be very good come late February and early March, said Mutch. We would like to attain that playoff position one through four, and wherever we land is great. The combination of new and old could be exactly what the Eagles need to land a berth in Hockey East postseason action. The Eagles also welcome the additions of freshmen Kim Meagher, Rachel Wedig and Erin Blood, all of whom will see significant playing time this season. Meagher played four years of boy s varsity hockey at John Baptist Memorial High School, where she was named Female Athlete-of-the-Year in Wedig spent the last three years playing for the Minnesota Thoroughbreds and at Maple Grove Senior High School, where she earned allconference honorable mention honors. 23 LEARNING RESOURCES Boston College s philosophy is to put the student-athlete at the heart of its program. To succeed academically at Boston College, students must be disciplined in their study habits. Recognizing the time constraints posed by participation in sports, the University s Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes lends a hand, offering every varsity athlete a wide range of services academic advising, counseling and tutoring. Nearly one-third of all student-athletes participate in some sort of community service project through the athletic department. More than 100 student-athletes corresponded regularly with area school children through the Pen Pal program last year. With 15 buildings on 40 acres, it is now the site of the Law School and residence halls housing more than 800 students. Though incorporated as a University from its beginning, Boston College did not begin to fill out the dimensions of its University charter until the 1920s, with the inauguration of the Summer Session, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Law School and the Evening College. The 1930s saw the introduction of the Graduate School of Social Work and the College of Business Administration (now known as The Wallace E. Carroll School of Management). The William F. Connell School of Nursing and the School of Education (now the Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch School of Education) followed in 1947 and The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences first offered doctoral programs in 1952, followed by the graduate schools of Education, Nursing, Management, and Social Work. In 1927 Boston College conferred one earned bachelor s degree and 15 master s degrees on women through its Extension Division. By 1970 all undergraduate programs had become coeducational, and today women comprise more than half of the University s enrollment. In 1996 the Evening College became the James Woods, S.J. College of Advancing Studies, offering master s as well as bachelor s degrees. That same year, the University s longest presidency, 24 years, came to an end when J. Donald Monan, S.J., became chancellor and was succeeded in the presidency by William P. Leahy, S.J. In 1997, President Leahy announced the implementation plan for Advancing the Legacy, BC s $260-million, five-year investment to strengthen education, reaffirm its Jesuit and Catholic mission, increase research, and improve the quality of student life. This past year, Boston College successfully completed a $400 million fund-raising campaign. Ever to Excel: The Campaign for Boston College will create 100 endowed faculty chairs, add $50 million to undergraduate and graduate financial aid, target support for academic centers, libraries, and selected undergraduate and graduate programs, and help fund new construction, including a planned student center and humanities building. THE COMMUNITY The Jesuit Community at Boston College is committed to maintaining and strengthening the Jesuit, Catholic mission of the University, especially its commitment to integrating intellectual, personal, ethical, and religious formation; and to uniting high ac ademic achievement with service to others. Jesuits are active in all aspects of University life. Some 45 teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and another 13 have administrative appointments. This year, 10 visiting scholars and 25 graduate students from 10 countries are Jesuits. Members of th e community offer Ignatian retreats, extracurricular programs, and spiritual direction to faculty, staff, and students. Gifts from the Jesuit community have helped establish the Jesuit Institute and the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Boston College. The Institute sponsors personal research, academic exchange, and collective inquiry about the issues that emerge at the intersection of faith and culture. The Center helps members of the University community to understand and implement Jesuit/ Ignatian traditions and promotes conversation among other religious traditions represented at Boston College. 28 GENE DEFILIPPO, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Gene DeFilippo and Boston College Athletics could be the proverbial fit. Since DeFilippo was named Director of Athletics on Sept. 16, 1997, the BC athletics program has experienced a dizzying and unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. DeFilippo has made a significant impact on the program internally, in the Boston community, and from a national standpoint, while molding it into one of the nation s elite both on and off the playing field. DeFilippo is credited with spearheading efforts to strengthen BC s athletics program in a number of areas. Under his leadership, 317 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the academic year, earning the Athletic Director s Award for Academic Excellence. In its March 18, 2002 issue, U.S. News and World Report honored Boston College as one of the top-20 athletics departments in the country. The magazine ranked each Division I school on four criteria: Gender equity, graduation rates, win-loss records and total number of sports offered. Additionally, to be honored, a school could not have committed any major NCAA infractions in the past 10 years. BC made the honor roll along with such athletic and academic heavyweights as Duke, Stanford, Harvard and Michigan. DeFilippo has been instrumental in raising the funds to build the new $26 million, 72,000- square-foot varsity athletics center in the north end zone of Alumni Stadium. Boston College recently received a commitment of $15 million from the Yawkey Foundation to help fund the new building and other athletics-related improvements to enhance intercollegiate, intramural and club sports. The new facility, to be called the Yawkey Athletics Center, will be attached to the north side of Alumni Stadium. It will house the varsity football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for generaluniversity use, freeing up critically needed space in Conte Forum for women s athletics and other men s teams. DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Under DeFilippo s leadership, cash gifts received during he year reached a record level of $9 million. Combined with the Yawkey gift, fundraising for BC Athletics reached a record $24 million. The $53 million raised during the Ever to Excel Campaign represents the most successful fundraising initiative in the history of Boston College Athletics. Gifts secured during the campaign exceeded the total dollars committed during the previous 30 years. Former student-athletes continue to be among BC s most generous benefactors as 22 have made commitments of $100,000 or more. DeFilippo is extremely active on the national scene. He is the former BIG EAST representative to the NCAA Division I Management Council, the chair of the Executive Committee of the BIG EAST basketball conference, a member of the Executive Committee and first vice president of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics), vice president of the nation s Division I-A Athletics Directors organization and is a member of the Honors Court and the board of directors of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. DeFilippo was named the Division I-A Northeast Region NACDA/ Continental Airlines AD of the Year. He was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Salt Lake City in June He received the Penguin of the Year Award from Youngstown State University in 2003 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Springfield College in In April 2000, he was awarded the I Migliori plaque at the Pirandello Lyceum s annual awards banquet, honoring outstanding achievements and exemplary lives of Italian-Americans. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a bachelor of science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children Christine, 27, a guidance counselor and women s basketball coach at Beaver Country Day School; John, 25, an assistant football coach at Columbia, and Mary, 18, a freshman at Boston College.
