1 MIGI KOKAN SHIELD TORRES STRAIT / N.P.A. HOCKEY CARNIVAL TAGAI STATE COLLEGE NARUPAY NGURPAY MUDH (HORN ISLAND CAMPUS) MAIEM, SEW NGAPA, WELCOME to the 018 Friday March 3 Migi Kokan Carnival on Narupay.
2 MAIEM, SEW NGAPA Background Various hockey-type games were played in many areas of the Torres Strait and Papua and New Guinea. A hockey game called kokan, which was played on Mabuiag Island, was the name of the ball itself. This ball was 6 8 centimetres in diameter. The game was played over a long stretch of the sandy beach. The kokan was hit with a rough bat or club, baiwain or dabi, which was usually cut from a piece of bamboo centimetres in length on which a grip was cut. On Mabuiag Island the game was played by both genders. (Australian Sports Commission, 008) Migi is an island language word for small. This carnival is the result of a partnership between Hockey Programs delivered in 017 through the Cairns Hocky Aspire Program, Tagai State College and the communities of the Torres Strait Island. It marks the ongoing hockey development into the college s and community sport program. In 017- we also recognize the ASPIRE TO DEADLY GOOD HEALTH Hockey Programs and we look forward to stronger links with Torres Island Councils and TSYSRA that assist and support local program delivery as part of the sports pathways program in remote communities. This carnival began in 008 and targets young people 1 and Under to learn, develop and advance a non- traditional sport and in the process support programs that increases good health in the community, supports regular school attendance and good behaviour including respect and responsibility as well as mentoring local coaches and officials to ensure local capacities are developed and strengthened to support the sustainable delivery of hockey in this region into the future. Hockey is delivered within the school and after school programs and culminates in this regional competition. We thank sincerely Horn Island for hosting this event and appreciate the support the school and the community brings to make this event a success. We also take this opportunity to thank the local coordinators that have driven these programs and of course the teachers, parents and local volunteers that join together to value add to this opportunity. In 018, Cairns Hockey Aspire has been active in providing mentor support programs and have formed a partnership with School Sport and will be talent identifying to participate in the President s Team at the upcoming State School Hockey 1 and Under in Cairns in June 018. It is an exciting time to be involved in sport in this region and it s very satisfying to see schools and sporting organisations working closer in partnerships that will benefit Torres Strait students in many ways. Congratulations to you all for being part of the program and working for the kids.
