1 Yarra Valley Hockey Club Round 8 Hot Stuff in Pink Anne Marie Murray The Women s State League 2 team bravely made the trip to Bendigo a few weeks ago in a must win game. An alternative uniform was required, and as eleven shades of white is so last summer, pink was chosen as the colour of the day. Many of you may have seen the stylish pink training tops sported by our girls on Tuesday or Thursday nights. Thanks to a simple and phone call from Anne Marie to the great folks Carmel and Jon at Pal Hosiery, the team modelled hot pink socks as well! As the socks were generously donated, each of the players donated $10 to the McGrath Foundation a total of $180 raised. The opposition were clearly impressed too, and the team travelled back down the highway with a win! They must be lucky pink socks! Thanks to Carmel and Jon at Pal Hosiery, producers of

2 President s Message Stuart Bridgman Hello everyone, The season is now well underway it is timely for us all to remember a few aspects of our game. Sometimes in an attempt to avoid contact with another player, some players have raised their stick above their head, however the following rule applies: Raised stick over head rule. If any player for any reason raises a stick above his or her head (or that of an opponent), the umpires must stop play and a free hit may be awarded against the player. If this action makes contact with any player (even accidently) the player MUST be suspended. If the action was considered malicious, a red card must be issued. A recent walkover from one of our teams almost gave rise to a walkover penalty of all teams of that age group for that round. With this is mind, all team managers should be aware of the following: Early Notice Walkover A walk over can be given (a goal loss to the offending side and a goal win to the affected side), against any team that can not field at least 7 players, if the team advises Hockey Victoria, the opposition and the rostered umpires with more than 48 hours notice. Any team giving more than 2 walkovers in any season may be withdrawn from playing for the rest of that season by HV. Late Notice Walkover: Where notice to HV and the opposing team and the umpires has been later than 48 hours but earlier than 24 hours, a walkover will be applied the team giving the walkover AND to the lowest ranked team in that age group, for that round. No Notice Walkover: A no notice walkover is applied when less than 24 hours notice is given for the walkover. In this situation, ALL teams in that age group will be penalised as having a walkover for that round. When a walkover is given, the offending team is responsible for ground hire fees, umpire costs (if any) and any costs incurred by the opposing team. Hockey Victoria may at it s discretion waive the above penalties. They expect that players from the lower ranked teams will play for the higher ranked teams in order to prevent the walkover. On other matters. The Banyule City Council, and in particular our local councillor, Anthony Carbines are about to undertake a study on the security issues that we face at our ground. They will investigate the cost of installing CCTV cameras around our facility and will undertake a safety audit of our ground, car park and clubrooms. The intention is to reduce and possibly stop antisocial behaviour around the ground. If you have an issue or concern that you wish to be included, please me on stuartb@landlink.com.au. 3 Update from the Juniors Craig Lovel At Round 8 the Juniors are performing reasonably well with three teams entrenched in the top four, including the U17PNW winning every game and U1A still undefeated. All other teams remain in the hunt mid table for a finals spot, which is very encouraging. The big challenge for teams and coaches is to make further improvement during the rest of the season. Great to have such a dedicated and committed group of coaches in 2010 our thanks to you all! Attendance at training is good, so a credit to all. Yarra comprises 4% of the players in the North West Tigers, a great result and leading club in the Zone (Essendon and Essendon Ladies are 2 clubs!). The BBQ on Friday nights has been terrific thanks to Gerard in particular. A new BBQ has been obtained, so hopefully we can give it a good work out from here on! A big thank you to Bunnings at Eltham who have given us a great discount (almost 0%) on a new BBQ. Well done to the Junior parents running the canteen on Saturday mornings. We are raising some good funds and the coffee (and now cakes) are good. There are two games and then a break over the school holidays for 2 weeks then the business end of the season. Don't book the third term holiday until 18 Sept as that is Grand Final day!

5 Men s Mid Season Update Neil Watson Men s State League 2 After an encouraging and promising start to the season, the Men s SL2 team has come back to earth after two resounding defeats over the last two weeks. These were preceded with three very good wins against Kew, Werribee and Geelong. It is the first time for a number of years that our SL team has won 3 games in a row. Hopefully the Queens Birthday break has come at a good time and allowed them to sit back and review what went wrong in those two losses and come back strongly against Greater Dandenong Warriors this week. A win is a must and will not only keep them in touch with the race for the finals but put a large gap in the relegation stakes in a closely fought competition at the halfway mark of the season. The very young side under the tutelage of Trevor Bannan had been playing some very good disciplined team hockey following their game plan which enabled the three consecutive wins. The strength of the results was based around a strong work ethic and the importance of playing as a team. When they have strayed from this plan, so have their performance and results. The team has so far introduced 8 new players to State League hockey this year which is a great sign for the club with the strength, commitment and positive attitude of our younger players coming through and it is very important to maintain the momentum and press on seeking a finals berth. 6 Vets Mid Season Update Darren Harvey The Vets season has reached the half way point, and I m sure everyone has appreciated having a week off to rest those strained and tired hamstrings, calves, knees, etc, etc, etc. We have 3 teams (B, C West and E West) that play on Monday nights in Over 40 s and 2 teams (SuperVets A and SuperVets B) playing in the Over 0 s comp on Wednesday nights. The season so far has had mixed results. B Grade has played well and is currently 6th on the ladder in a very close competition, apart from the 2 runaway leaders. A couple of narrow losses against the top teams has shown that a finals position is not impossible. They have 2 Wins, 3 Draws and 4 Losses. C West is struggling at the wrong end of the ladder and, despite not conceding many goals, the lack of goals scored has seen the team not yet record a win. Lets hope that trend is reversed in the second half of the season. With 4 Draws and Losses, a win can t be far off. The E West team is again a real competitor in its grade. With 4 Wins and 3Draws from 9 games, the team is in th position and itching to break into the top 4. The SuperVets A team are the only undefeated team in their competition. They are currently in 3rd position in a tight battle for positions 2 to 4. (4W D 0L) SuperVets B are also positioned in the top 4. With 4 Wins, a Draw and 4 Losses putting them in 4th position, they are a great chance to make the finals. Congratulations to Wendy McGinniskin (pictured left) who has been selected in the Victorian 60 s Women s Veterans Team. Anne Marie Murray (see the front page for a picture of Anne Marie in pink socks) who has been selected in the Victorian 3 s Women s Veterans Team. Condolences On a sad note, the Club would like to pass on its condolences to the family of Mick Van Nugteren who passed away this week after a long battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with you.

7 Under 17 Boys Mid Season Quote Update Neil Watson Approaching the halfway mark of the season sees the U/17 PNW team sitting on top of the ladder undefeated with 8 wins to their credit. This week will be a true test for them when they travel to Geelong to play second place Geelong who have only lost one game. The team has had some resounding wins when all players have been available but have also had some close calls when players have been unavailable. One of those games was against Werribee when 2 of the stronger players were unavailable and meant that everyone else had to stand up and be counted which they did admirably. Ash Bannan has been a prolific goal scorer, the majority coming from penalty corner conversions which has been a pleasing aspect of their game. At the other end of the ground, Bill LaMarca has been a rock of Gibraltar in defence and continually denies the opposition access into the circle which in turn limits their goal scoring opportunities. The results so far have been a good team effort and hopefully they can continue in the same vein for the remainder of the season.
