1 Oar-Inspired FROM THE ROWING CO-ORDINATOR What a great weekend it was at Murray Bridge! Two days of racing, mainly in good conditions and a few trophies to bring home too! Congratulations to all who competed, especially first time winners, may there be many more! A summary of results is published in this weeks PRW. No. 010 for Season Editors: L Radford, R Sexton Contents: From the Rowing Co-ordinator From the President Diary Dates Diary Dates: Pulteney Boat Club Meeting: The next meeting of the Boat Club committee is on Monday 22 February, 2016 at 6:00pm. The venue is Allan Wheaton House, 206 South Tce, Adelaide. All are welcome, refreshments are supplied! Regattas and Events: This weekend we are racing boys and girls year 8 crews for the first time in a full regatta. Please give them an extra cheer if you are on the beach for their races! Any year 8 s who are not named to race this weekend should still attend training at the Torrens from 8:30-11:30am please! Hopefully I will see you at the Back to the Boatshed 2 function on Friday evening at the Torrens, I am looking forward to catching up with rowers past and present and even future?? It is a busy time of the year with the Fringe and other competing events so we appreciate your support. Only three weeks to go now time to dig deep and pull out a PB! GO PULTENEY!! 2 FROM THE PRESIDENT One of the things that has always had an impact on me through rowing, are some of the life lessons the sport delivers. There are many that stay with me from my own time rowing for the school, then from later as a coach and even today as a parent and committee member. Perhaps one of the most powerful of those is learning a little about resilience and selflessness. When you row in a crew, you are inextricably linked to the others in the boat and your fortunes rise and fall with theirs. For instance, if you don t turn up for training, then you let down all your mates and literally leave them high and dry. It s the same out on the water if don t put in with every stroke, that lack of effort could mean the metres between winning or losing a race. If you re not committed to excel, that lets down your team mates with every stroke. It doesn t take long to work out that if you act selfishly, others will also pay a price if you let them down. So, in many ways, I think rowing is the ultimate team sport, because it demands that every individual commits to the team and each other. That outward focus and commitment to your crew means that you learn how to meaningfully give of yourself for the collective goal. That in turn builds individual resilience and capacity to be a contributor wherever life s path leads you. Speaking of teamwork and sense of community, the club is holding a "Back to the Boatshed" Function on Friday night and I look forward to seeing those who have booked to attend. Thanks also to those who have signed up to the 100 Club and offering tangible support for the Pulteney Boat Club. The 100 Club is every bit an extension of the ethos of support and team spirit which typifies the sport of rowing. It s not too late to sign up if you re still thinking about it! Thank you for your support of the club it means a great deal.
