1 Head Coach Bruce Erickson H e a d C o a c h Fourth Season at Creighton Overall: Creighton: Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Creighton women s soccer program, Bruce Erickson is looking to build on his squad s 2001 success. He leads a program that is on the rise, finishing last season at , including an mark at home. The J a y s rec ord in Missouri Va l l e y Conference play, was good for a third-place finish and tied their best winning percentage in league play. Erickson s teams epitomize the word teamwork after a record-setting mark of 50 assists in 2000 and another 49 in The Jays have capitalized on their assists The Erickson File EDUCATION Viterbo University, 1990 Bachelor of Science in Industrial Psychology Bruce Erickson SOCCER PLAYING EXPERIENCE Viterbo University N L C A A All-America honors in 1986 over the last two campaigns under Erickson. The Jays 88 goals over the past two seasons are topped only by the teams (92 goals) for the most goals in a two-year span. The offensive output has increased as Erickson s recruits, such as 2001 MVC Freshman of the Year Regina Moench, have taken to the new Bluejay style of play. Bruce is a tremendous women s soccer coach, Creighton Athletic Director Bruce Rasmussen said. His experience is matched by few coaches in the country. His administrative background, coupled with his knowledge of the game, make Bruce one of the top women s soccer coaches in the country. Erickson came to Creighton from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis., where he served as head men s soccer coach since 1993 and director of athletics since He helped instill a winning soccer tradition at the NAIA school, as the V-Hawks were consistently nationally ranked during his tenure. The Brooklyn Park, Minn., native also was responsible for starting and coaching the inaugural Viterbo women s soccer program in While at the helm of the V- Hawk men s squad, Erickson compiled an overall record of (.595), which included five winning campaigns. He led Viterbo to three Midwest Classic Confe rence c hampionships and one NAIA district title. He also earned league Coach of the Year notice four times and was named both league and NAIA District Coach of the Year in Erickson has served as a high school girls staff coach for the Olympic Development Programs in both Wisconsin and Minnesota and holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma as well as a NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma. Before his coaching career at Viterbo, Erickson was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the V-Hawks from 1986 to He was an all-conference goalkeeper and earned NLCAA All-America honors in Erickson still holds the all-time goals against average record at the school, with.87 goals per game during his collegiate career. Erickson received a bachelor of science degree in industrial psychology from Viterbo University in December He resides in Omaha with his wife, Sue, and their three children, Emma (6), Olivia (3) and Noah (1). 2 Bluejay Assistant Coaches A s s i s t a n t C o a c h Fourth Season at Creighton Canisius College, 1994 Heather Cairns Heather Cairns enters her fourth season as an assistant coach with Bluejay women s soccer. Cairns joined the Creighton staff after spending two years as an assistant coach for the University of New Mexico women s soccer program. While at New Mexico, Cairns duties included practice planning and execution, off-season conditioning, travel arrangements, fund-raising and recruiting. Prior to her two-year stint at New Mexico, Cairns served as an assistant women's soccer coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, from 1994 to In addition, she was an assistant girls soccer coach for one season at Pleasant Valley (Iowa) High School and Bettendorf (Iowa) High School. Cairns coached for the Quad City Strikers Soccer Club, with her team placing second at the 1997 Region II Tournament. Heather has been a terrific asset to our team, Head Coach Bruce Erickson said. She has a tremendous knowledge of the game and her experience as a player and a coach at the Division I level will continue to help us. A native of Erie, Pa., Cairns played collegiate soccer at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., where she was a four-year starter from 1990 to She was team captain her junior and senior years and was voted the team's best defensive player. She was also selected to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Tournament team. Cairns has been involved with the Iowa, Nebraska and New Mexico Olympic Development Programs as a staff coach and as head coach. Cairns holds a United States Soccer Federation "B" license and a NSCAA Advanced National diploma. Cairns received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Canisius College in May She earned a secondary education degree from St. Ambrose in May 1996 and is currently working toward her M.Ed. in secondary special education, with a concentration in learning disabilities. A s s i s t a n t C o a c h Fifth Season at Creighton Victoria University, 1989 John Brian John Brian begins his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Creighton women s soccer program. In addition to his duties at Creighton, Brian also teaches social studies Westside High School in Omaha and is involved with three additional soccer programs. He serves a s a coach with the Nebraska Olympic Development Program, is an assistant on the We stside High School men s tea m and assists with the Nebraska Women s Amateur Team. Bria n holds a U.S.S.F. Na tional Coaching License. John s energy and passion for the game is contagious, Head Coach Bruce Erickson said. His wealth of coaching experience has proven to be an asset to our staff. Brian e arned a bachelor s degree in histor y from Vi c t o r i a University in Wellington, New Zealand, in While in New Zealand, Brian played professional soccer. He went on to receive a teaching endorsement from Creighton University in V o l u n t e e r A s s i s t a n t First Season at Creighton Nebraska 1998 Tanya Benning Joining the women s soccer staff as a volunteer assista nt this fall is for mer Canadian National Team member, Ta n y a Benning. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Benning was a central midfielder and defender for the Canadian National Team from 1997 through 2000, playing in 29 matches. During her stint with the national team, she was able to participate in the 1999 Women s World Cup. Our team is really going to benefit from Tanya s experience as a player at the highest level and as a coach, Bruce Erickson said about the addition to his staff. She is familiar with the area, as she was a member of the University of Nebraska soccer program from She earned first-team all-region and All-Big 12 honors her senior season in This defender also made the grade, notching all-academic all-conference honors in 1996 and In 1994 she was voted the top allaround player on the Huskers and earned most inspirational honors in 1995 and Benning is currently employed by Merck & Co., and is married to former Husker football player and Omaha native, Damon Benning.
